Step 1: Warming up
1. Show some pictures or short videos of people doing different activities and ask students to describe what they see.
2. For example: "Look at this picture. What is the man doing? He is running."
Step 2: Presentation
1. Present the text about New Year celebrations at school and ask students to read it carefully.
2. Highlight the expressions in bold and ask students to observe the structure of the sentences.
3. Introduce the rule of the present continuous tense: We use the present continuous tense to talk about things that are happening now.
4. Explain the structure: be (am/is/are) + verb -ing
Step 3: Grammar Rules
1. Present the positive, negative and interrogative forms of the present continuous tense on the blackboard.
Positive: I am playing. You/We/They are playing. He/She/It is playing.
Negative: I am not playing. You/We/They are not playing. He/She/It is not playing.
Interrogative: Am I playing? Are you/we/they playing? Is he/she/it playing?
2. Give some examples and ask students to make sentences following the patterns.
Step 4: Formation of -ing Form
1. Show the table of how to make the -ing form of a verb.
2. Explain the different rules:
Most verbs: +ing (e.g. walk - walking)
Verbs ending in a silent e: -e + ing (e.g. welcome - welcoming)
Verbs ending in ie: -ie + y + ing (e.g. lie - lying)
Vowel + a consonant: double the consonant + ing (e.g. put - putting)
3. Give some verbs and ask students to change them into the -ing form.
Step 5: Practice
1. Ask students to do the exercises in the textbook. For example:
It's three o'clock in the afternoon. My mum (1) is making (make) spring rolls.
Amy: Hi, Sandy. What are you doing right now? Sandy: I (1) am watching (watch) the Vienna New Year's music show on TV.
2. Check the answers together and correct mistakes.
Step 6: Production
