Sunday, 31 August
We’ve been in China for a month now. Dad, Mom, Harry and I moved to Tianjin on 25 August. We’re not very far from Beijing. Two days ago, we celebrated my 16th birthday. It was great celebrating in China; the only thing that was strange was the cake — here they’re not as sweet as the ones in New York. On Monday, school starts — I wonder what it will be like.
Monday, 1 September
On my first day, I was looking around for a locker to put my books in. However, here all the students keep all of their books at their desks. We stay in the same classroom because apparently, we don’t have to go from class to class — teachers come to us!
Today, we selected teacher assistants for each subject. Their duties are to collect homework, make announcements, and do other stuff (事情) for the teachers and the students. It’s kind of a big deal here! Since I am from the US, I was asked to be the English assistant. I felt so proud but quite nervous at the same time because I wasn’t sure what I had to do, but I accepted the job anyway.
Friday, 3 October
Boy, what a week! Now we have nine classes every day, including the morning class, a combination of our American schools’ “Homeroom ” and “Study Hall”. I think Chinese students work too much! I have to do my homework when I get back home. I don’t even have time to watch TV or surf the Internet like before. I sometimes miss New York and my school because we didn’t have to study so much. We had more time to hang out with our classmates and neighbors; here, besides their usual classes, students are involved in weekend classes in subjects such as English, Chinese and math.
I get a lot of attention, being from another country. Everyone wants to practice English with me! A really cute girl even asked me for my phone number on my second day and sent me a text message! I’m making a lot more friends now. I just need a lot of help to improve my Chinese. Some students want to do a language exchange program with me. Nice!
1. The passage mentions all the following points EXCEPT ______.
A. food taste B. physics study
C. free time activities D. language exchange programs
2. According to the passage, which of the following is NOT the teacher assistant’s duty?
A. Collecting homework.
B. Making announcements.
C. Helping teachers with small errands (差事).
D. Teaching classmates.
3. Where is this passage most probably from?
A. A newspaper. B. A guide book. C. A diary. D. A magazine.
【答案】1. B 2. D 3. C

A group of middle-aged dads formed a dance team to perform at their kids’ school but unexpectedly gained popularity on social media, having over 300,000 followers-one of them is famous actor Hugh Jackman. The “Outta” Puff Daddys first came together in 2012 in Brighton for a surprise performance at their children’s annual dance show.
Having never danced as a job before and ranging in age from 42 to 60, the dads were taught by their kids’ street dance teacher for the surprise performance. They received a good reception, so they decided to carry on permanently.
Paul Jukes, 48, said dancing together has enabled the members to get through unemployment and anxiety. “Even though I’m the leader and artistic director of the team, I’m not normally the most confident guy,” said Jukes, whose team name is Jukebox. “If we’re in a party situation, we’re off at the side, but when we’re together, those inhibitions(拘束感) are lost, and we just accept life to the fullest.”
The dance team members remember the moment when they surprised their kids at the dance show. “We performed at the Brighton Dome which seats 2,000 people, so for our first live dance performance, it was quite something. We took the roof off,” Jukes said. “The noise was crazy and of course, the kids in the audience were blown away. They were shouting, ‘Hang on a second; that’s your dad.’ Most people might think our kids would be embarrassed by us but none of them had that feeling. All our families and kids were really supportive and really loved it. And it has been considered cool by them to have such a large following on Instagram.” The team has to adapt to its members’ changing bodies as they get older, but that has not stopped them from continuing to dream big, which sets a good example to their kids.
4. What’s special about the dance team?
A. It helps with school dance instructions.
B. Its members are all inexperienced.
C. It regularly posts videos on social media.
D. Its members are guided by famous dancers.
5. How has the dance team influenced Paul Jukes?
A. It has inspired him to take up new hobbies.
B. It has improved his health and leadership skills.
C. It has helped him build confidence in a tough time.
D. It has strengthened his relationship with his family.
6. How did the kids react to their dads’ dance performance?
A. They were amazed and proud of their dads.
B. They were embarrassed but showed understanding.
C. They considered following Jukebox on social media.
D. They joined their dads to complete the performance together.
7. Which of the following is the best title for the text?
A. Dancing is beneficial to people of all ages.
B. Talented dads celebrate their kids’ interest.
C. A dance team is winning popularity among adults.
D. A dance team consisting of middle-aged dads goes popular.
【答案】4. B 5. C 6. A 7. D

They received a good reception, so they decided to carry on permanently.(这些爸爸 以前从未从事过舞蹈工作,年龄从42岁到60岁不等,他们的孩子的街舞老师教他们进行这场惊喜表演。他们受到了很好的接待,所以他们决定永远继续下去。)”可知,这个中年爸爸舞蹈队的成员都是缺乏跳舞经验的。故选B项。
【5题详解】
推理判断题。根据第三段“Paul Jukes, 48, said dancing together has enabled the members to get through unemployment and anxiety. “Even though I’m the leader and artistic director of the team, I’m not normally the most confident guy,” said Jukes, whose team name is Jukebox. “If we’re in a party situation, we’re off at the side, but when we’re together those inhibitions(拘束感) are lost, and we just accept life to the fullest.”(48岁的保罗·朱克斯说,一起跳舞让成员们度过了失业和焦虑。“尽管我是团队的领导者和艺术总监,但我通常不是最自信的人,”Jukes说,他的团队名为Jukebox。“如果我们在派对上,我们就会被冷落,但当我们在一起时,这些拘束感就会消失,我们就会充分地接受生活。”)”可知,这个舞蹈队帮助Paul Jukes在困境中建立了自信。故选C项。
【6题详解】
推理判断题。根据第四段““The noise was crazy and of course, the kids in the audience were blown away. They were shouting, ‘Hang on a second; that’s your dad.’ Most people might think our kids would be embarrassed by us but none of them had that feeling. All our families and kids were really supportive and really loved it. And it has been considered cool by them to have such a large following on Instagram.” (“噪音太疯狂了,当然,观众中的孩子们都被震撼到了。他们喊着:‘等一下;那是你爸爸。’大多数人可能认为我们的孩子会因为我们而感到尴尬,但他们都没有这种感觉。我们所有的家人和孩子都非常支持,非常喜欢。他们认为在Instagram上有这么多粉丝很酷。”)” 可知,孩子们对爸爸们的表现感到又吃惊又骄傲。故选A项。
【7题详解】
主旨大意题。文章第一段“A group of middle-aged dads formed a dance team to perform at their kids’ school but unexpectedly gained popularity on social media, having over 300,000 followers-one of them is famous actor Hugh Jackman. The “Outta” Puff Daddys first came together in 2012 in Brighton for a surprise performance at their children’s annual dance show.(一群中年爸爸组成了一个舞蹈队,在孩子的学校表演,但出乎意料地在社交媒体上走红,拥有超过30万粉丝,其中之一是著名演员Hugh Jackman。“Outta” Puff Daddys于2012年在布莱顿首次聚在一起,在他们孩子的年度舞蹈秀上进行了一场惊喜表演。)”对舞蹈队情况进行了总的概述,第二、三段主要讲舞蹈队成员的情况以及舞蹈队对于这些中年爸爸们的积极影响,最后一段讲的是中年爸爸舞蹈队演出现场的情况,纵观全文,可知文章主要讲的是一群中年爸爸组织了一个舞蹈队并走红的故事,所以D项A dance team consisting of middle-aged dads goes popular.(由中年爸爸组成的舞蹈团很受欢迎)作为文章题目最合适,故选D项。
C
Adults are often ashamed to ask for help. Seeking someone’s help can make you feel like you are broadcasting your inability. New research suggests young children don’t seek help in school for the same reason.
Kayla Good, a graduate student at Stanford University, and Alex Shaw, an associate professor of psychology at the University of Chicago, applied a classic technique to learn more about how children think about reputation: Across several studies, they asked 576 children aged four to nine, to predict the behavior of two characters, Tom and Jack, in a story. Tom genuinely wanted to be smart, and Jack only wanted to seem smart to others. In one study, they told children both characters did poorly on a test, and asked which of them would be more likely to raise their hands in front of their class to ask the teacher for help.
The four-year-olds were equally likely to choose either of the two characters as the one who would seek help. But by age seven or eight, children thought Jack would be less likely to ask for help. And children's expectations were truly “reputational” in nature — they were specially thinking about how the characters would act in front of peers. They could still imagine situations where Jack would seek help: when it could be sought privately (on a computer rather than in person), children thought both characters were equally likely to ask for it.
Given the findings, it seems quite possible that when children themselves are the ones struggling, they, too, might avoid seeking out help if they are concerned about reputation. If so, the unwillingness to seek help when others are present could clearly impede learning progress. To improve in any field, one must work hard, take on challenging tasks, and ask questions. However, the situation can be difficult when someone is concerned about their impressions on others.
8. What were the children asked to predict about the two characters?
A. Their bad behaviors. B. Their learning progress.
C. Their likeliness to get help. D. Their potential for seeking help.
9. Who was likely to seek private aid according to the eight-year-olds?
A. Tom. B. Jack. C. Both. D. Neither.
10. What does the underlined word “impede” in paragraph 4 probably mean?
A. Prevent. B. Ensure. C. Quicken. D. Monitor.
11. What is the author’s suggestion for kids?
A. Be ready to help others.
B. Be brave to ask for help.
C. Care more about reputation.
D Make efforts to be smarter.
【答案】8. D 9. C 10. A 11. B
【解析】
【导语】这是一篇说明文。文章介绍新的研究表明年幼的孩子不会在学校寻求帮助。作者建议孩子们要勇敢地寻求帮助。
【8题详解】
细节理解题。根据文章第二段“In one study, they told children both characters did poorly on a test, and asked which of them would be more likely to raise their hands in front of their class to ask the teacher for help.(在一项研究中,他们告诉孩子们两个角色的考试成绩都很差,并询问他们中哪一个更有可能在全班同学面前举手向老师寻求帮助)”可知,孩研究中孩子们被询问的是哪个角色更有可能寻求帮助,即预测角色寻求帮助的可能性。故选D。
【9题详解】
细节理解题。根据文章第三段“They could still imagine situations where Jack would seek help: when assistance could be sought privately (on a computer rather than in person), children thought both characters were equally likely to ask for it.( 他们仍然可以想象杰克会寻求帮助的情况:当可以私下寻求帮助时(在电脑上而不是当面),孩子们认为两个角色都有可能寻求帮助)”可知,据八岁的孩子说,杰克和汤姆都可能私下寻求帮助。故选C。
【10题详解】
词句猜测题。根据划线词的下文“To improve in any field, one must work hard, take on challenging tasks and ask questions.(要想在任何领域取得进步,一个人必须努力工作,接受具有挑战性的任务,并提出问题)”可推知,在别人在场时不愿寻求帮助显然会阻碍学业进步。impede意为“阻碍”。故选A。
【11题详解】
推理判断题。根据文章最后一段“If so, this unwillingness to seek help when others are present could obviously impede academic progress. To improve in any field, one must work hard, take on challenging tasks and ask questions.(如果是这样的话,在别人在场时不愿寻求帮助显然会阻碍学业进步。要想在任何领域取得进步,一个人必须努力工作,接受具有挑战性的任务,并提出问题。)”可推知,作者建议孩子们要勇敢地寻求帮助。故选B。

After waking up, you may feel annoyed that you cannot recall the dreams you had last night. Artificial intelligence (AI) may be able to help.
Previously, there have been AI models that can turn text into images. They can do this by learning from a large amount of data from both tests and images. This time, researchers from Osaka University in Japan have trained an AI system called Stable Diffusion to recreate images based on people’s brain scans, reported Science magazine.
The researchers used an online data set provided by the University of Minnesota, US, which consisted of brain scans from four participants as they each viewed a set of 10,000 photos. The scans were recorded by functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI).
The AI then learned about the brain activities by analyzing changes in blood flow shown by the fMRI data — when a part of the brain is activated (激活), more blood will flow to it. It then matched the brain activities with the photos. Through this method, AI learned how human brains would react when seeing different photos.
Finally, the researchers tested the AI on additional brain scans from the same participants when they viewed photos of a toy bear, airplane, clock and train. If the person looked at an airplane, for example, the AI would use the brain scan data to create an image of a very blurry (模糊的) airplane. Then, it would turn on the previous “text-to-image” model and improve the quality of the image by feeding itself the keyword “airplane”. The final images were “convincing” with about 80 percent of accuracy (精确), according to the researchers.
The new study created a novel approach that includes texts and images to “decipher (破译) the brain”, Ariel Goldstein from Princeton University, US, told Science magazine. In the future, scientists hope that the technology can be used to record imagined thoughts and dreams or allow people to understand how differently other animals understand reality.
12. What do we know about Stable Diffusion?
A. It can help train people’s minds. B. It can fully present people’s dreams.
C. It was created to draw people’s brains. D. It can produce pictures from people’s thoughts.
13. How did the AI system learn about human brain activity?
A. By analyzing activities of human thoughts. B. By studying patterns of blood flow in the brain.
C. By recording brain scans from four participants. D. By examining 10,000 photos about human brains.
14. How did the AI system improve the quality of the final images?
A. By employing a “text-to-image” model. B. By adjusting various brain scan data.
C. By combining additional brain scans. D. By inputting text from human observers.
15. What is the potential use of this technology according to scientists?
A. To improve text-to-image models. B. To create more accurate brain scans.
C. To learn how animals view the world. D. To help people interpret their dreams.
【答案】12. D 13. B 14. A 15. C

Sunday 31 August
Nice!

A Be ready to help others.
B. Be brave to ask for help.
C. Care more about reputation.
D. Make efforts to be smarter.
D
If the person looked at an airplane, for example, the AI would use the brain scan data to create an image of a very blurry (模糊) airplane.
