Anyone who has messy children, lazy partners or naughty flat mates will be impressed by the resourcefulness (足智多谋) of Katrina Neathey, the co-owner of a cleaning company in West Sussex. She has made her three teenagers sign an agreement to help keep the house tidy. Any infraction of the agreement, for example, littering up their bedroom with magazines and drinks, or failing to put their dirty plates in the dishwasher, will come with a 5 pounds’ fine (罚款) or removal of their phones.
It is one way of setting up a cleaning rota (轮班表) that people might stick to. “Cleaning is teamwork,” says Lynsey Crombie, also known as the Queen of Clean. She suggests getting everyone in the household together to find out what people like doing. “In our family, my husband is better at mowing the lawn. I love cleaning rooms. Someone else might like folding the towels. You let everybody do what they’re good at, or enjoy, so there’s more chance they’ll actually do it.”
Crombie is not a fan of fines. For her children she takes away their phones or turns off the Wi-Fi. For other adults who aren't joining in, she suggests keeping asking them to take action.
If you aren’t sure what is required to keep the dirt at bay, there are many checklists online that you can print out to share the daily, weekly and monthly tasks. You can stick it on the fridge, and then everyone knows where they stand. If it’s not working, have another chat, such as “What do you dislike?” “How can we improve it?” Ironing out problems is all about communication.
4 What does the underlined word “infraction” in Paragraph 1 mean?
A. change. B. influence. C. inobservance. D. discussion.
5. How does Crombie encourage her family to enjoy their tasks?
A. By sticking to the cleaning rota strictly. B. By dividing tasks according to interest.
C. By setting up a role model herself. D. By offering the family timely help.
6. What can we infer from Paragraph 3?
A. Fines work well among adults. B. It's hard to push adults to take charge.
C. Ways to motivate people vary. D. It's good to remind people of their tasks.
7. What’s the author’s purpose of writing the text?
A. To introduce ways of inspiring family to share housework.
B. To encourage people to develop teamwork spirit at home.
C To call on housewives to deal with lazy partners resourcefully.
D. To advertise a great cleaning company in West Sussex.

Joyce Loaiza lives alone in a community for older people in Florida. When she is home, the retired office worker often talks with a friendly female voice that asks about her day. A few kilometers away, the same voice helped 83-year-old Deanna Dezern when her friend died. In New York state, it plays games and music for 92-year-old Marie Broadbent. And in Washington state, it helps 83-year-old Jan Worrell make new friends.
The women are some of the first in the United States to receive the robot ElliQ made by Intuition Robotics. The company and other officials say it is the only device (装置,设备) using AI to help older Americans from loneliness.
“You can actually talk to her,” said Loaiza, who is 81. Her ElliQ calls her “Jellybean” for no clear reason. She said amusingly, “She’ll make comments like, ‘I’ d go outside if I had hands, but I can’t hold an umbrella.’”
The device looks like a small table light and it has an eyeless, mouthless head that lights up and turns. It remembers each user’s interests and their talks, helping create a special experience with each new discussion. They can be as deep as the meaning of life or as light as a small joke. ElliQ also plays music and provides creative or spiritual sayings. On a video screen that comes with it, it will show different cities and places of interest. The device leads exercises, asks about the owner’s health, and lets the users know when to take medicines and drink water. Intuition Robotics says none of the conversations are heard by the company, with the information staying on each owner’s device.
Intuition Robotics CEO Dor Skuler said the idea for ElliQ came before he launched his company eight years ago. His grandfather who lost his partner needed a helper, but the first did not work out. Skuler then thought a robot could fill the space of a friend by adapting to each person and their interests. He said, “That just did not exist anywhere.” The average user interacts with ElliQ more than 30 times a day and more than 90 percent report lower levels of loneliness, Skuler said.
8. Why are some women in America mentioned in paragraph 1?
A. To explain a concept. B. To introduce a topic.
C. To make a comment. D. To make a guess.
9. Which word can best describe ElliQ from what Loaiza said?
A. Powerful. B. Ignorant. C. Humorous. D. Annoying.
10. What can ElliQ do according to the text?
A. Act as a table light. B. Make a short video.
C. Hold an umbrella. D. Remind users to take medicines.
11. What does the last paragraph mainly talk about?
A. The inspiration of inventing ElliQ. B. The wide popularity of ElliQ.
C. The working rules about ElliQ. D. The unique feature of ElliQ.

Wildlife officials in Thailand carried out a plan on Wednesday to bring peace to a central city after at least 10 years of human-monkey problems.
The monkeys that live in Lopburi are a symbol of local culture and a major tourist attraction. But there have been years of dangerous interactions (互动) between humans and the monkeys. Past attempts to control the monkey population have failed. Local people and businesses say they have had enough. The monkeys often try to take food from humans, injuring them in the process.
“Officials hope to catch 2,500 of the monkeys and put them in large enclosed (围住的) places,” said Athapol Charoenshunsa, director-general of the Department of National Parks, Wildlife and Plant Conservation. They will work with wildlife experts to find a way for a limited number of monkeys to stay in the city. “I don’t want humans to have to hurt monkeys, and I don’t want monkeys to have to hurt humans,” he told reporters in Bangkok.
An official monkey-catching project was launched this week. Workers have caught 37 monkeys so far. Most of those animals were placed under the care of wildlife officials in the nearby province of Saraburi. Others were sent to the Lopburi zoo.
Officials said they plan to catch more monkeys once the enclosures are complete. Separate cages will be prepared for different groups of monkeys to prevent them from fighting.
The monkeys are a symbol of the province, about 140 kilometers north of Bangkok. But some experts said that the city’s monkey troubles were caused by tourists and local people’s feeding the animals. They say feeding them got more monkeys to enter the city in search of food.
12. What did local people think of the monkeys in Lopburi?
A. Interesting. B. Useful. C. Unbearable. D. Unimportant.
13. What will happen to the monkeys in the city?
A. Most of them will be checked regularly. B. They will be raised in local zoos.
C. They will be trained by experts. D. They will be kept to a certain number.
14. What causes the city’s monkey trouble according to some experts?
A. The shortage of food. B. People’s action of feeding them.
C. Government’s improper city planning. D. The rapid development of tourism.
15. What does the text mainly talk about?
A. Officials plan to end monkey problems in a Thai city.
B. Human activities drive monkeys into a Thai city.
C. Tourists are usually found fighting with monkeys in Thailand.
D. Monkeys in Thailand are bringing much trouble.

For her children, she takes away their phones or turns off the Wi-Fi.
4. What does the underlined word “infraction” in Paragraph 1 mean?
A. change. B. influence. C. inobservance. D. discussion.
C. To call on housewives to deal with lazy partners resourcefully.
D. To advertise a great cleaning company in West Sussex.
【答案】4. C 5. B 6. C 7. A

【4题详解】
词句猜测题。根据划线单词后面的部分“for example, littering up their bedroom with magazines and drinks, or failing to put their dirty plates in the dishwasher, will come with a 5 pounds’ fine or removal of their phones. (比如在卧室里乱扔杂志和饮料,或者没有把脏盘子放进洗碗机,都将被处以5英镑的罚款或没收手机。)”可知,被罚款的行为肯定是违反、违背协议的行为,所以,划线单词infraction的意义为“违背,违反”,与inobservance意义一致。故选C项。
【5题详解】
细节理解题。根据第二段的句子“She suggests getting everyone in the household together to find out what people like doing. “In our family, my husband is better at mowing the lawn. I love cleaning rooms. Someone else might like folding the towels. You let everybody do what they’re good at, or enjoy, so there’s more chance they’ll actually do it.” (她建议让家里的每个人都聚在一起,看看大家喜欢做什么。“在我们家,我丈夫更擅长割草坪。我喜欢打扫房间。其他人可能会喜欢叠毛巾。你让每个人都做他们擅长或喜欢的事情,这样他们才更有可能真正去做。”)”可知,Crombie根据兴趣给家庭成员分配任务。故选B项。
【6题详解】
推理判断题。根据第三段的句子“Crombie is not a fan of fines. For her children, she takes away their phones or turns off the Wi-Fi.(Crombie不喜欢罚款。对于她的孩子,她会拿走他们的手机或关闭Wi-Fi。)”可以推论出,激励人们的方法多种多样,不一定是通过罚款。故选C项。
【7题详解】
推理判断题。本文主要讲述了Katrina Neathey和Lynsey Crombie是如何激励家庭成员分担家务的。所以作者写作本文的目的是介绍鼓励家人分担家务的方法。故选A项。

【答案】8. B 9. C 10. D 11. A
