I was a bright-eyed girl heading off to Howard University, aiming at a legal career and dreaming of sitting on a Supreme Court bench somewhere. Twenty-one years later I am later I am still a bright-eyed dreamer and one with quite a different tale to tell. My grandma, an amazing woman, graduated from college an the age of 65. She was the first in our family to reach that goal. But one year after I started college, she developed cancer. I made the choice to withdraw from college to care for her. It meant that school and my personal dream would have to wait. Then I got married with another dream: building my family with a combination of adopt and biological children. In 1999, we adopted our first son. To lay eyes on him was fantastic---and very emotional. A year later came our second adopted boy. Then followed son No. 3. In 2003, I gave birth to another boy. You can imagine how fully occupied I became, raising four boys under the age of 81. Our home was a complete zoo---a joyous zoo. Not surprising, I never did make it back to college full-time. But I never gave up on the dream either. I had only one choice: to find a way. That meant talking as few as one class each semester. The hardest part was feeling guilty about the time I spent away from the boys. They often wanted me to stay home with them. There certainly were times I wanted to quit, But I knew I should set an example for them to follow through the rest of their lives. In 2007, I graduated from the University of North Carolina. It took me over 21 years to get my college degree! I am not special, just single-minded. It always struck me that when you’re looking at a big challenge from the outside it looks huge, but when you’re in the midst of it, it just seems normal. C Green is an important color in nature. It is the color of grass and the leaves on trees. It is the color of most growing plants, too. Sometimes, the word green means young, fresh and growing. Sometimes, it describes something that is not yet finished or plants that are not ripe. For example, a greenhorn is someone who has no experience, who is new to a situation. In the fifteenth century, a greenhorn was a young cow or ox whose horns had not yet developed. A century or so later, a greenhorn was a soldier who had not yet had any experience in war. By the eighteenth century, a greenhorn had the meaning it has today — a person who is new in a job. About one hundred years ago, greenhorn was a popular expression in the American west. Old-times used it to describe a man who had just arrived from one of the big cities in the east. The greenhorn didn’t have the skills that he would need to live in the hard, rough country. Someone who has the ability to grow plants well is said to have a green thumb. The expression comes from the early 1900s. A person with a green thumb seems to have a magic touch that makes plants grow quickly and well. You might say that the woman next door has a green thumb if her garden continues to grow long after your plants have died. The Green Revolution is the name which was given some years ago to the development of new kinds of rice and other grains. The new plants produced much larger crops. The Green Revolution was the result of hard work by agricultural scientists who had green thumbs. 46. According to the passage, a greenhorn means now. A. a young cow or ox whose horns have not yet developed B. a soldier who has not had any experience in war C. a person who works as an unskillful beginner in a job D. a man who doesn’t have the skills to live in the country 47. The meaning of the underlined word “touch” in Paragraph 6 is . A. contact B. ability C. idea D. detail 48. Which of the following about the Green Revolution is NOT right? A. If there weren’t the Green Revolution, we would have no rice to eat. B. The expression “the Green Revolution” appeared several years ago. C. Because of the Green Revolution, we have more kinds of rice and other grains. D. Agricultural scientists with green thumbs started the Green Revolution. 49. We can know from the passage that . A. all growing plants in nature is green B. green is the most important color in nature C. a person with a green thumb can make plants grow well D. the expression “a green thumb” has a history of two hundred years 50. The main idea of the passage is . A. a greenhorn B. a green thumb C. the Green Revolution D. the word “green” and its story D If English means endless new words, difficult grammar and sometimes strange pronunciation, you are wrong. Haven’t you noticed that you have become smarter since you started to learn a language? According to a new study by a British university, learning a second language can lead to an increase in your brain power. Researchers found that learning other languages changes grey matter. This is the area of the brain which processes information. It is similar to the way that exercise builds muscles. The study also found the younger people learn a second language, the greater the effect is. A team led by Dr Andrea Mechelli, from University College London, took a group of Britons who only spoke English. They were compared with a group of “early bilinguals” who had learnt a second language before the age of five, as well as a number of later learners. Scans showed that grey matter density (密度) in the brain was greater in bilinguals than in people without a second language. But the longer a person waited before mastering a new language, the smaller the difference. “Our findings suggest that the structure of the brain is changed by the experience of learning a second language,” said the scientists. It means that the change itself increases the ability to learn. Professor Dylan Vaughan Jones of the University of Wales, has researched the link between bilingualism and maths skills. “Having two languages gives you two windows on the world and makes the brain more flexible (灵活的),” he said. “You are actually going beyond language and have a better understanding of different ideas.” The findings were matched in a study of native Italian speakers who had learned English as a second language between the ages of two and 34. Reading, writing, and comprehension were all tested. The results showed that the younger they started to learn, the better. “Studying a language means you get an entrance to another world,” explained the scientists. 51. The main subject talked about in this passage is_____________. A. science on learning a second language B. language can help brain power C. man's ability of learning a second language D. language learning and maths study 52. In the second paragraph, the writer mentions “exercise” in order to_____________. A. make people believe language learning helps grey matter work well B. prove that one needs more practice when he (she) is learning a language C. to show the importance of using the language when you learn the language D. say language is also a kind of physical labor 53. The underlined word “bilingual” probably means_____________. A. a researcher on language learning B. an English native speaker C. an active language learner D. a person who can speak two languages 54. We may know from the scientific findings that_____________. A. the ability of learning a second language is changing all the time B. there is no difference between a later second language learner and one who doesn't know a second language C. the experience of learning a second language has bad effect on people's brain D. the earlier you start to learn a second language the higher the grey matter density is 55. In the last two paragraphs, the author wants to tell us that_____________. A. early learning of a second language helps you a great deal in study other subjects B. learning a second language is the same as studying maths C. Italian is the best choice for you as a second language D. you’d better choose the ages between 2 and 34 to learn a second language 第Ⅱ卷 (共35分) 五、阅读表达(共5题,每题2分,共10分) 将答案写到答题纸的横线上。 阅读表达 Jamie, 16, was on his way to the store when he noticed a stranger sitting alone on the edge of a bridge. “I was just on my way to the American sweet shop to buy some drinks, when I saw this guy in his 30s sitting on the edge of the bridge,” he told Humans of Dublin. “I just thought, ‘wow.’”I stopped and asked him if he was OK, but I knew from the look in his eyes that he wasn’t, and he didn’t say anything, either, but I saw tears coming from his eyes. I begged him for a while to come down and sit on the steps, and eventually he did. Over the next 45 minutes, Jamie listened attentively as the stranger shared his burdens. “We sat on the sidewalk on the south side of the Liffey and talked for about 45 minutes, about what was happening to him, why he was feeling that way... If there weren’t the Green Revolution, we would have no rice to eat. B. The expression “the Green Revolution” appeared several years ago. C. A. all growing plants in nature is green B. green is the most important color in nature C. a person with a green thumb can make plants grow well D. the expression “a green thumb” has a history of two hundred years 50. Italian is the best choice for you as a second language D. you’d better choose the ages between 2 and 34 to learn a second language 【答案】51. B 52. A 53. D 54. D 55. A 【解析】 【导语】本文是一篇说明文。文章主要讲述学习第二语言对大脑的积极影响及相关研究。 【51题详解】 主旨大意题。根据文章第一段“If English means endless new words, difficult grammar and sometimes strange pronunciation, you are wrong. Haven’t you noticed that you have become smarter since you started to learn a language?(如果英语意味着没完没了的生词,难懂的语法,有时甚至是奇怪的发音,那你就错了。难道你没有注意到自从你开始学习一门语言后,你变得更聪明了吗?)”以及第二段“According to a new study by a British university, learning a second language can lead to an increase in your brain power.(根据英国一所大学的一项新研究,学习第二语言可以提高你的脑力)”可知,文章核心讨论的是学习外语可以帮助你让大脑更聪明。故选B。 【52题详解】 推理判断题。根据第二段中“Researchers found that learning other languages changes grey matter. This is the area of the brain which processes information. It is similar to the way that exercise builds muscles.(研究人员发现,学习其他语言会改变大脑灰质。这是大脑中处理信息的区域。这与锻炼肌肉的方式类似)”可知,作者提到“exercise”是为了类比语言学习和肌肉锻炼,说明语言学习可以增强灰质功能,故选A。  【53题详解】 词句猜测题。根据第四段划线词所在句子“They were compared with a group of “early bilinguals” who had learnt a second language before the age of five, as well as a number of later learners.(研究人员将他们与一组在五岁之前学习第二语言的“早期bilinguals”以及一些更晚的学习者进行了比较)”可知,“bilingual”指的是能够说两种语言的人,故选D。  【54题详解】 细节理解题。根据根据第二段中“Researchers found that learning other languages changes grey matter. This is the area of the brain which processes information. It is similar to the way that exercise builds muscles.(研究人员发现,学习其他语言会改变大脑灰质。这是大脑中处理信息的区域。这与锻炼肌肉的方式类似。)”和最后一段“The results showed that the younger they started to learn, the better.(结果显示,越早开始学习,效果越好)”可知,越早开始学习了外语,灰质密度越高。故选D。 【55题详解】 主旨大意题。根据最后两段“Professor Dylan Vaughan Jones of the University of Wales, has researched the link between bilingualism and maths skills. “Having two languages gives you two windows on the world and makes the brain more flexible (灵活的),” he said. “You are actually going beyond language and have a better understanding of different ideas.”(威尔士大学的迪伦·沃恩·琼斯教授研究了双语能力和数学技能之间的联系。他说:“掌握两种语言为你打开了两扇世界之窗,使大脑更加灵活。”“你实际上超越了语言,更好地理解了不同的想法。”)”及“The findings were matched in a study of native Italian speakers who had learned English as a second language between the ages of two and 34. Reading, writing, and comprehension were all tested. The results showed that the younger they started to learn, the better. “Studying a language means you get an entrance to another world,” explained the scientists.(这一发现与一项针对以意大利语为母语、在2岁至34岁之间将英语作为第二语言学习的人的研究相吻合。阅读、写作和理解都接受了测试。结果显示,越早开始学习,效果越好。科学家们解释说:“学习一门语言意味着你进入了另一个世界。”)”可知,最后两段提到学习语言能够让人更灵活,并且对阅读、写作和理解等能力有积极影响,表明早期学习第二语言对其他学科的学习有很大帮助。故选A。 第Ⅱ卷 (共35分) 五、阅读表达(共5题,每题2分,共10分) 将答案写到答题纸的横线上。 阅读表达 Jamie, 16, was on his way to the store when he noticed a stranger sitting alone on the edge of a bridge. I couldn’t leave him there alone, but I had to go, so I was going to ring an ambulance,” Jamie recalled. “I told him they could help him feel better. But he was like’Please, please don’t call them. I’m fine. I just want to walk around for a while... I’m goanna be OK!’” The man eventually accepted Jamie’s request and was taken to a hospital. Before bidding farewell, the two exchanged phone numbers. Jamie continued, “And about three months ago, he texted me that his wife was pregnant, they were having a son, and they were naming him after me. Can you believe that? They’ re going to name their child after me. He said in that moment when I approached him, he was just about to jump, and those few words saved his life. They’ re still ringing in his head every day. ‘Are you OK?’ I can’t really understand how these few words could save his life, but he told me, ‘Imagine if nobody ever asked you those words.?’” 56.
