A huge fire broke out on 2 September 1666 in London. The fire, known as the Great Fire of London, was the worst fire in the history of London. It burned down more than three quarters of the old city.

First, you need to set goals to encourage yourself to save money. For example, you plan to have a good dress in one year, to have a car in two years’ time or to buy a house in five years.

As a result of pollution, Lake Erie, on the borders of the USA and Canada, is now without any living things.
Pollution in water is not simply a matter of “poisons” killing large numbers of fish overnight. Very often the effects of pollution are not noticed for many months or years because the first organisms (生物体) to be affected are either plants or plankton. But these organisms are the food of fish and birds and other creatures. When this food disappears, the fish and birds die too. In this way a whole food chain can be wiped out, and it’s not until dead fish and water birds are seen at the river’s edge or on the seashore that people realize what is happening.
Where do the substances which pollute the water come from? There are two main sources—sewage (污水) and industrial waste. As more detergent (洗涤剂) is used in the home, so more of it is finally put into our rivers, lakes and seas. Detergents harm water birds, dissolving the natural substances which keep their feathers waterproof. Sewage itself, if not properly treated, makes the water dirty and prevents all forms of life in rivers and the sea from receiving the oxygen they need. Industrial waste is even more harmful as there are many highly poisonous things in it, such as copper and lead (铅).
So, if we want to stop this pollution, the answer is simple: sewage and industrial waste must be made clear before flowing into the water. It may already be too late to save some rivers and lakes, but others can still be saved if the correct action is taken at once.
12. When do the people notice the pollution of water according to Paragraph 2?
A. The first organisms are affected. B. A good many fish and birds die.
C. Poisonous things are poured into water. D. The balance of nature is destroyed.
13. Why do the living things die in the river according to Paragraph 3?
A. There is no water. B. There is no fish.
C. There is no poison. D. There is no oxygen.
14. Which of the following is harmful according to the text?
A. Organisms.
B. Plants and plankton in the water.
C. Waste water from cities.
D. Industrial waste made clear before flowing into the water.
15. Which of the following is the best way to stop water pollution?
A. To realize the serious situation clearly.
B. To put oxygen into the river.
C. To make the waste material harmless before flowing into the water.
D. To make special room in the sea for our rubbish.
【答案】12. B 13. D 14. C 15. C

A Perfect Party
One day, my friend Mary and I were enjoying our free time in my living room. While looking through a magazine, Mary said, “This looks fun.” She held up a photo of a crowd of happy people and a table covered with colorful decorations and plates of delicious-looking food. The headline on the next page read “Celebrate Your Weekend with a Perfect Potluck Party.”
“We should do that!” I said excitedly. “Let’s invite our friends to a potluck party in my yard!”
“Good idea,” she replied.
“There’s just one problem,” I said.
“That it’s going to be too much fun?” Mary joked.
I laughed. “Not exactly. I need to ask permission (许可), but my mom might not be as excited about throwing a party as we are. My parents have been really busy with their work recently.”
When my mom got home from work, I cautiously showed her the magazine article and told her our idea, waiting for her reply. After what seemed like a century, my mom said, “That looks like fun, but... I’m afraid I won’t have time to help you plan it. Do you think you can do it on your own?”
At her words, I asked ” So, mom, will you permit us to do so if we can arrange the party well?” My mom nodded with a smile. Unable to contain my joy and excitement, I threw myself into her arms, murmuring, “Thank you, dear mum.”
Then I continued. “I promise Mary and I will do every last bit of planning and cleaning and everything!”
“Everything? What about food?” my mom asked.
“It’ll be a potluck party,” I explained. “So everyone will bring something to share out among the guests!”
She nodded. “OK. If you want to make sure you have the right balance of food at a potluck, you should definitely talk to the guests ahead of time about what they’re bringing. Besides, I suppose you could draw up a guest list, make invitations in advance and decorate the yard carefully.”
“That’s great!” I said, “It’ll be a perfect potluck party. You’ll see!”

Hearing our plan, they were overwhelmed with excitement. We told them the dishes they were expected to bring. Everything went smoothly. Mary bought some colorful balloons, while I prepared some flowers to decorate the yard. We spent hours making decorations, cleaning the backyard, and setting everything up. Seeing what we had done, my mom was proud of us. Everything was ready for the party.
Paragraph 2:
Finally, the big day came. Mary and I were extremely delighted, waiting for our friends with eagerness. It wasn’t long before the guests began to arrive. At the sight of the floating balloons and beautiful flowers in the yard, everyone’s eyes were filled with happiness. Soon, the table was covered with plates of delicious-looking food brought by my friends. I announced the start of our potluck party. We ate, chatted, sang and danced, a joyful atmosphere blanketing the yard. It was clearly visible that this was a party for delight and feasting and everyone had great fun. The fire started in the very early hours of Sunday morning in the house of the king’s baker A strong wind blew the fire from the baker’s house into a small hotel next door. Then it spread quickly into Thames Street. That was the beginning.
At that time, most of the buildings in London were made of wood, so it was easy for the fire to spread quickly. By eight o’clock, three hundred houses were on fire. By Monday, nearly a kilometre of the city was burning along the Thames River. On Tuesday, which was considered the worst day, the fire destroyed many well-known buildings, including the old St Paul’s Cathedral.

You have a nice salary, but you still feel short of money. At the end of each month, you often ask yourself, “Where has all my money gone?” To help you better run your salary, here come some money-saving tips.
First, you need to set goals to encourage yourself to save money. For example, you plan to have a good dress in one year, to have a car in two years’ time or to buy a house in five years.
Second, form money-saving habits and stay away from the ones that waste money. Learn to keep a diary of how much you spend and what it’s for. Think twice before using money on expensive skin care products (护肤品). The best way to keep your skin in good condition is enough sleep.
Third, pay attention to your daily things. Leave no more than one light on when you leave home. Buy vegetables from a market where vegetables are less expensive and fresher, not a supermarket. When going to a supermarket, take a notebook with you. Write down what you want to buy.
Fourth, save your social life. Take the dishes that haven’t been eaten up away for next day when you have dinner in a restaurant. When it’s your turn to offer a meal, invite your friends to your home, and cook the dinner yourself. If you are to attend a party and an expensive present is needed, ask several friends to go together to share a present.
