Your kids can’t afford to miss the opportunity to bring out the best in themselves! The Mini Olympic Games are on July 16th. You just need to pay £10 for participation, and you’ll make a valuable contribution to our three aims. Firstly, we long to invest most of our contributions in medical research at the Children’s Health Centre, which is our chief intention to launch this campaign. Secondly, we hope to raise money to build a new school library and restore the swimming pool. Last but not least, we want to encourage children to actively take part in sports and form the habit of exercising as well. There’s a wide range of events. Interest is likely to be the greatest in the football match, with volleyball coming a close second. If I could make a final request — we’ve had plenty of entries for the long jump, but not enough for the high jump, and we don’t want to cancel that, so please see if you can convince your kids to sign up for that. By the way, please tell your kids that the priority is security and competition comes second. And your kids should be accompanied by you. Thank you for your cooperation. A Four National Parks to Add to Your Bucket List The national parks in the United States are chosen for their natural, historic, and cultural values. Here are some of those kinds of parks. National Park of American Samoa Closer to New Zealand than the United States, this park is one of the most remote (偏僻的) national parks. It protects a paleotropical rainforest. A third of the park is oceanic waters, with rich species. Ofu Island in the park has a protected area for snorkeling and diving, along with a famous white-sand beach. The park has a wet season that runs from November through April. Hot Springs National Park This park’s mountains encircle the northern edge of the city of Hot Springs, Arkansas, which is centered over 43 hot springs and 26 miles of hiking trails. Even before official park designation (指定), the city of Hot Springs had become a destination for treating physical problems. In addition to bathing, visitors come to tour high-end bathhouses built in the late Victorian age, many in Spanish style. Indiana Dunes (沙丘) National Park With its 15 miles of shore under the forces of Lake Michigan’s wind and waves, Indiana’s only national park has high sands from which visitors can see the skyline of Chicago across the lake. “Singing sands” may occur once a month under the best conditions. Trails lead through the park’s wetlands, dunes, and forests. The park also shelters more than 60 ancient structures. Gates of the Arctic National Park and Preserve This giant park is completely above the Arctic Circle. In the northern park during winter, the sun doesn’t rise for nearly a month and in summer the sun doesn’t set for nearly two months. In summer, the ground gets wet from melted ice, which helps plants grow. By August, the plants turn into bright red and yellow colors. Looking across the vast land can be confusing and big bears in the distance look like nearby little squirrels (松鼠). 21. What is special about National Park of American Samoa? A. Some part of it is ocean. B. It lies in another country. C. Most part of it is above the Arctic Circle. D. Its wet season runs through all year round. 22. Who will most likely take an interest in Hot Springs National Park? A. Those who are history lovers. B. Those who like wildlife species. C. Those who want to seek health benefits. D. Those who enjoy staying at high-end hotels. 23. What can visitors do at Indiana Dunes National Park? A. Hear “singing sands” each day. B. Pay a visit to historic buildings. C. Enjoy 24-hour sunshine in winter. D. Watch the skyline of Lake Michigan. A 22. C 23. 根据National Park of American Samoa部分中“A third of the park is oceanic waters, with rich species. (公园的三分之一是海洋,有着丰富的物种。)”可知,美属萨摩亚国家公园的特别之处在于它有一部分是海洋。故选A项。 根据Hot Springs National Park部分中“Even before official park designation (指定), the city of Hot Springs had become a destination for treating physical problems. (甚至在官方指定公园之前,温泉城就已经成为治疗身体疾病的目的地。)”可知,温泉国家公园提供治疗身体疾病的服务,那些想要寻求健康益处的人最有可能对它感兴趣。故选C项。 【23题详解】 细节理解题。根据Indiana Dunes (沙丘) National Park部分中“The park also shelters more than 60 ancient structures. (公园里还有60多座古建筑。)”可知,游客可以参观印第安纳沙丘国家公园的历史建筑。故选B项。 B I truly believe we all have a very special purpose in life, regardless of who we are or where we come from. After ten years of working for a major Wall Street bank, I wanted to do something challenging. So when I read a Merrill Lynch advertisement looking to hire more stockbrokers (股票经纪人), with great excitement, I made some phone calls and arranged to meet with one of its branch vice presidents. After this interview and interviews with twelve of his top stockbrokers, I eventually got the job. The first few months was a struggle. I lived on very little commission (佣金). Night after night, I left the office weary and exhausted, ready to give up, yet somehow returning the next morning to start a new day. Eventually, all the hard work paid off. In less than four years, I became one of the top sales people at my branch and increased personal sales by 17%. The success earned me a six-figure income, promotion and numerous sales awards. Toward the end of my fourth year at Merrill Lynch, it hit me that something was missing. I thought long and hard about my goals. Then I was reminded of the time when I spoke to hundreds of people, while in college as a student leader, and years later, when I won a “Humorous Speech” championship. It dawned on me that every time I made a speech, I always had a wonderful, energetic, peaceful and magical feeling that was unmatched by anything else I did. I knew the extraordinary public-speaking skills I was blessed with could enable me to make a lasting difference and change other people’s lives. Then I took another daring risk, gave up everything and left the investment business for a more satisfying career as a motivational speaker. The beginning of my speaking journey was surprisingly similar to what I had first experienced at Merrill Lynch. However, nothing in the world comes close to the satisfying feeling I get when thousands of people tell me how much I have made a difference in their lives by motivating them to take risks and be the best they could be. 24. Why did the author meet with a Merrill Lynch branch vice president? A. To get a position. B. To employ more clerks. C. To arrange an interview. D. To make an advertisement. 25. Which of the following best describes the author according to paragraph 2? A. Generous and passionate. B. Anxious and successful. C. Able and strong-minded. D. Optimistic and cheerful. 26. Why did the author leave Merrill Lynch? A. Because he hoped to go back to college. B. Because he wanted to influence others. C. Because he was treated badly. D. Because his business was not successful. 27. Which is the most suitable title for the text? A. Dare to Take Risks B. Hard work Pays Off C. Challenge Your Career Choice D. Speaking Makes a Satisfying Job 【答案】24. A 25. C 26. B 27. 根据第一段“So when I read a Merrill Lynch advertisement looking to hire more stockbrokers (股票经纪人), with great excitement, I made some phone calls and arranged to meet with one of its branch vice presidents. After this interview and interviews with twelve of his top stockbrokers, I eventually got the job.(因此,当我看到美林公司招聘更多股票经纪人的广告时,我非常兴奋地打了几个电话,并安排与该公司的一位分行副总裁会面。经过这次面试和他的12位顶级股票经纪人的面试,我最终得到了这份工作)”可知,作者与美林公司分行副总裁会面,是为了获得股票经纪人这个岗位。故选A。 根据第二段“The first few months was a struggle. I lived on very little commission (佣金). Night after night, I left the office weary and exhausted, ready to give up, yet somehow returning the next morning to start a new day. Eventually, all the hard work paid off. In less than four years, I became one of the top sales people at my branch and increased personal sales by 17%. The success earned me a six-figure income, promotion and numerous sales awards.(最初的几个月很艰难。 根据第三段中“I knew the extraordinary public-speaking skills I was blessed with could enable me to make a lasting difference and change other people’s lives.(我知道我所拥有的非凡的公共演讲技巧可以使我产生持久的影响,并改变别人的生活)”和第四段中“Then I took another daring risk, gave up everything and left the investment business for a more satisfying career as a motivational speaker.(然后,我又冒了一次大胆的风险,放弃了一切,离开了投资行业,去做一名更令人满意的励志演说家)”可知,作者离开美林公司,离开投资行业,去做一名励志演说家,是希望用自己的演讲技巧改变别人的生活,影响别人。 阅读文章,尤其是第一段“After ten years of working for a major Wall Street bank, I wanted to do something challenging.(在华尔街一家大银行工作了十年之后,我想做一些具有挑战性的事情)”和最后一段“Then I took another daring risk, gave up everything and left the investment business for a more satisfying career as a motivational speaker.(然后,我又冒了一次大胆的风险,放弃了一切,离开了投资行业,去做一名更令人满意的励志演说家)”可知,作者用自身经历告诉我们要敢于挑战,敢于冒险。 A。 C The rock group Counting Crows were onto something when they chose their band name. Crows (乌鸦) can indeed count, according to research published this week in Science. The results show that crows have counting capacities near those of human babies, says lead study author Diana Liao, a researcher at the University of Tübingen in Germany. “We think this is the first time this has been shown for any animal species,” she adds. Crows do not appear to be capable of symbolic counting, where numbers serve as an exact representation. Instead, the birds count by controlling the number of vocalizations (发声) they produce to correspond to associated hints. This is similar to how young children count before learning symbolic numbers, Liao says. For example, a baby who is asked how many apples are on a tree may answer, “One, one, one”. The baby produces the number of speech sounds which agree with that of the apples, rather than just saying, “Three.” In the study, Liao and her colleagues presented the crows with randomly ordered hints, four of which were visual-colored numbers that appeared on a touch screen. And four of them were auditory (听觉的), including sounds made by guitars and drums. Through trial and error, the birds had to figure out the correct number of calls to pair with each hint. If they got it right, they received a worm reward. After receiving about 180 training sessions, all of the crows were able to produce the correct number of vocalizations associated with the hints — a “pretty cool” finding, Liao says. She suspects, too, that the crows could have mastered numbers higher than four if they were given the opportunity. Onur Güntürkün, a biopsychologist at Ruhr University Bochum in Germany, who was not involved in the research, says the new paper is “excellent” even if the findings are “not unexpected” given all that scientists already know about crows’ intelligence. 28. What is the new research about? A. Crows’ ability to count. B. Crows’ skill of solving problems. C. A comparison between crows and babies. D. An investigation into a famous rock group. 29. Why does the author mention a baby counting apples in paragraph 3? A. To clarify how crows count. B. To explain how babies think. C. To illustrae the wisdom of crows. D. To display baby learning progress. 30. How did the crows get the worm rewards? A. By counting objects on the screen. B. By picking colors from the touch screen. C. By choosing between sounds and images. D. By matching sounds to visual and audio hints. 31. What can be inferred from the last paragraph? A. The research is poorly recognized. B. The results fit with previous findings. C. The study needs further confirmation. D. The biopsychologist is critical of the study. A 29. A 30. D 31. 根据第二段关键句“The results show that crows have counting capacities near those of human babies, says lead study author Diana Liao, a researcher at the University of Tübingen in Germany. (该研究的主要作者、德国图宾根大学的研究员Diana Liao说,研究结果表明,乌鸦的计数能力接近人类婴儿。)”可知,该研究结果表明,乌鸦的计数能力接近人类婴儿,由此可知,这项新研究是关于乌鸦的计数能力。故选A项。 根据第三段关键句“Instead, the birds count by controlling the number of vocalizations (发声) they produce to correspond to associated hints. This is similar to how young children count before learning symbolic numbers, Liao says. (相反,鸟类通过控制它们发出的声音数量来计数,以对应相关的提示。廖说,这类似于幼儿在学习符号数字之前的计数方式。)”可知,鸟类的计数方式类似于幼儿在学习符号数字之前的计数方式,幼儿数苹果正是幼儿在学习符号数字之前的计数方式,由此可知,作者在第3段中提到幼儿数苹果是为了阐明乌鸦是如何计数的。故选A项。 根据第四段内容“In the study, Liao and her colleagues presented the crows with randomly ordered hints, four of which were visual-colored numbers that appeared on a touch screen. And four of them were auditory (听觉的), including sounds made by guitars and drums. Through trial and error, the birds had to figure out the correct number of calls to pair with each hint. If they got it right, they received a worm reward. 根据最后一段内容“Onur Güntürkün, a biopsychologist at Ruhr University Bochum in Germany, who was not involved in the research, says the new paper is “excellent” even if the findings are “not unexpected” given all that scientists already know about crows’ intelligence. (德国波鸿鲁尔大学的生物心理学家Onur Güntürkün没有参与这项研究,他说,考虑到科学家们对乌鸦智力的所有了解,即使这些发现“并不出乎意料”,这篇新论文也是“优秀的”。)”可知,这些发现并不出乎意料,由此可知,从最后一段可以推断出研究结果与以前的发现一致。故选B项。 D It is difficult for a teacher to decide whether to allow students to listen to music in the classroom. Every time students need to write an essay or work on a problem, they say, “Can I put my headphones on? I think better that way.” But is that really true? Does music help concentrate? Research offers little to back up the idea that listening to music improves concentration. In one small study, 133 students performed reading tasks while listening to either light music, hip hop, or no music at all. Students who performed the reading tasks in silence scored the highest. Music with a higher intensity (强度) like hip hop was more distracting and had a bad effect on task performance. Volume (音量) plays a more important role than the type of music. The study found that the louder the music, the worse the performance in concentration. The type of music didn’t matter. Data from the study showed once again that silence was the best environment to improve concentration. However, music has a positive effect on work performance. Studies have showed that listening to music leads to positive changes in mood, as well as creativity. In fact, in music-listening cultures, which students are certainly part of, there’s actually a change in mood when the music is taken away. It’s hard to convince my students that music doesn’t help with their concentration. Taj, a senior told me, “I wouldn’t be able to concentrate if I were listening to music and trying to read. However, when I write, I feel like music helps me concentrate deeply. I don’t have writer’s block. It’s easy for me to put my words on paper.” “Maybe not with reading, but when it comes to math, listening to music certainly helps,” Danela told me. “You could actually be singing along with what you’re listening to and doing well in math.” 32. What does the underlined word “distracting” in paragraph 2 probably mean? A. Causing great excitement. B. Making someone feel frightened. C. Making someone want to do something. D. Making it difficult for someone to concentrate. 33. What can we learn from the small study? A. The volume of music affects concentration. B. Music can’t improve people’s mood and creativity. C. Different types of music lead to different performances. D. Students do well in reading tasks while listening to music. 34. What do Taj and Danela have in common? A. They believe music doesn’t help concentrate. B. They use music to help with their paper-writing. C. They can’t focus on reading while listening to music. D. They don’t listen to music while doing math problems. 35. Which of the following can be the best title for the text? A. Can Music Change Mood? B. Is Music Related to Reading? C. Should Students Listen to Music? D. Does Music Help Concentration? D 33. A 34. C 35. 根据画线单词上句“Students who performed the reading tasks in silence scored the highest. (在安静中完成阅读任务的学生得分最高。)”可知,在安静中完成阅读任务的学生得分最高,换句话说,音乐会影响学生的注意力,嘻哈等强度较高的音乐更容易让人分心,由此可知,画线单词意思是“使某人难以集中注意力”。故选D项。 【33题详解】 细节理解题。根据第三段关键句“Volume (音量) plays a more important role than the type of music. The study found that the louder the music, the worse the performance in concentration. (音量比音乐类型起着更重要的作用。研究发现,音量越大,注意力表现越差。)”可知,音量会影响注意力,音量越大,注意力表现越差,由此可知,我们可以从这项研究中得知音乐的音量影响注意力。故选A项。 根据倒数第二段关键句“I wouldn’t be able to concentrate if I were listening to music and trying to read. (如果我一边听音乐一边看书,我就无法集中注意力。)”和最后一段关键句““Maybe not with reading, but when it comes to math, listening to music certainly helps,” Danela told me. (“也许不是阅读,但说到数学,听音乐肯定会有所帮助,”丹妮拉告诉我。)”可知,两个人都认为在阅读时听音乐会影响注意力,由此可知,两个人的共同点是他们听音乐时不能专心阅读。故选C项。 【35题详解】 主旨大意题。通读全文,结合第一段关键句“But is that really true? Does music help concentrate? (但这是真的吗?音乐有助于集中注意力吗?)”可知,本文主要讨论了音乐是否有助于集中注意力,“Does Music Help Concentration?”意为“音乐有助于集中注意力吗?”,能够概括文章主要内容。故选D项。 第二节(共5小题:每小题2.5分,满分12.5分) 阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项 Holidays abroad are easier than ever thanks to smartphones. With the autumn weather fast approaching, it’s the perfect time of year to jet off and get away from hustles and bustles. ____36____ Here are some top tips to make sure you’re not caught out on your break abroad. Treat yourself to a power bank The batteries inside our phones are typically designed to last for around a day of moderate usage. ____37____ So you’re going to want some extra support so you don’t end up going AWOL (absent without leave) when your phone dies. That’s why I recommend picking up a USB power bank, which will give you a little bit of extra juice to keep you connected to the rest of the world. Enable Data roaming (漫游) ____38____ The good news is that it is easier than ever to stay connected to the net when abroad. Make sure you check with your network provider what your roaming plan is. In many countries it is straightforward to buy a SIM card for a local network, with a much more generous data allowance. ____39____ If you’ve got a newer phone, it will probably support “eSIM” — where you can simply use an app like Holafly or Airalo while connected to wifi to set yourself up on a new network temporarily. Download offline application software And finally, you need to get your apps in order. Once you reach your destination you’ll need a mapping app, and maybe even a translation app — Apple and Google make their own version of both. And modern translation apps are particularly exciting. ____40____ Then you get a clear translation. As we stepped into the workshop, the air was filled with the scent of clay and the soft hum of tools at work. Stunned by a wide array of delicate ceramics, I embarked on my first attempt at a vase under the guidance of a seasoned craftsman. My mother believed in using things up. Last year, our cornfield had a bad harvest because birds feasted on the crops. It was probably then that Mom’s frugality became even more extraordinary. She began keeping everything that seemed useless in the attic-worn-out clothes, old sheets, broken umbrellas, and some other old items. Mom’s favorite saying was “waste not, want not.” My brother Josh and I weren’t sure what that meant until the Affair of the Scarecrow, which, as it later became known, left a lasting impression on us. The story began with a pretty hat that Mom received as a gift to protect her from the sun. However, Josh and I could see that Mom’s frugal nature and fashion sense were in battle. Mom really didn’t want to get rid of the hat -- it was new and had a lot of use left in it -- but neither could she stand wearing it. She tried to take off the fancy decorations, but they were stuck on tight. She’d have to find some other solution. Josh and I watched as Mom headed upstairs to the attic with the hat. “Waste not, want not,” she called back down. We heard boxes being moved around. Moments later, Mom leaned out, holding a flour bag full of straw, and with a mysterious smile, she placed the hat on it. “What is that for?” I asked, confused. “A scarecrow!” Mom exclaimed. “But not a good one yet. It needs a strong body to stand firm in the field,” she said with a frown. “And it doesn’t look scary enough,” Josh remarked. I had to admit that Josh, though younger than I was, could sometimes be more imaginative. Josh and I turned to each other, searching for a good idea. Soon enough, Josh’s eyes lit up with inspiration. Paragraph 1: “Come with me!” Josh called out. _______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Paragraph 2: In the days that followed, the scarecrow stood tall. _______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 【答案】Come with me! Josh called out. The next instant, he raced upstairs with lightning speed. I hurried to follow him into the attic, where we began a thorough search. Mom was amused by our excitement when we found the broken umbrellas and used them as the backbone of the scarecrow. After that, we sorted out some old sheets and tied them on. The scarecrow now looked even scarier. We dragged our creation to the cornfield and planted it firmly in the mud, our hearts full of hope. In the days that followed, the scarecrow stood tall. Serving as a silent guardian, it successfully scared the birds away. Under its watchful eyes, our cornfield flourished this year. To our amazement, Mom’s useless things from the attic had come together to create something extraordinary. As we enjoyed a good harvest, her favorite saying “waste not, want not” echoed in our hearts. The “Affair of the Scarecrow” has taught us the value of creatively transforming seemingly useless items into treasure, making us aware that frugality is a good quality after all. 词汇激活 行为类 ①使用:use/employ ②充当:serve as/work as ③吓跑:scare...away/frighten...away 情绪类 ①兴奋:excitement/thrill ②惊讶:to our amazement/to our astonishment 【点睛】[高分句型1] I hurried to follow him into the attic, where we began a thorough search. B I truly believe we all have a very special purpose in life, regardless of who we are or where we come from. Speaking Makes a Satisfying Job C The rock group Counting Crows were onto something when they chose their band name. D It is difficult for a teacher to decide whether to allow students to listen to music in the classroom. Taj a senior told me, “I wouldn’t be able to concentrate if I were listening to music and trying to read. Holidays abroad are easier than ever thanks to smartphones. Make sure that all of the critical data is downloaded so that apps work offline and you can travel the world like a local. Bon voyage! A. What good is a phone without Internet access? B. _______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Paragraph 2: In the days that followed the scarecrow stood tall. _______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 第1页/共1页 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 $
