More and more Chinese students have added extracurricular (课外的) activities to their timetables
for summer vacations. This has led to a rise in tourism packages (套餐 ) involving study trips and
experimental programs at home and abroad.
Sightseeing places in China, including Guizhou province (省 ), Anyang in Henan province, and
coastal provinces, have been among the most popular for parents and their children. In these places,
children have more opportunities to enjoy the outdoors, and they can also take part in experimental
programs such as papermaking and wax printing.
This summer, Singapore has become the most popular place for students to study abroad. Many
Chinese students have signed up for university classes there to learn more about subjects like robots,

programming, and environmental science.
According to a Beijing Times survey, the most popular tourism packages are those related to
history and culture, the great outdoors and nature exploration ( 探 索 ), as well as science and
technology. Some homestays that offer experiences including farming, local history, and nature walks
are also very popular. The busiest times for family visits and graduation tours are from June to July.
This is because families with preschool-aged children and students between the ages of 18 and 22 are
the main groups. Tourism packages for family travel and study purposes average (平均) about 6,000
yuan per person.
Chen Juan, a tour guide, said, “Student tourists want to take a walk with instructors at cultural
sites like museums because they want to find out what’s behind the art and get ideas by seeing more of
the world. But some study trips can be in a rush, with little time for students to fully take in the
information they are learning.”
Liu Shuang, the mother of a 14-year-old boy in Beijing, signed her son up for a writing workshop.
In the workshop, teens read interesting stories by famous Chinese writers. They also visited some
writers’ hometowns.
“The trip is very tiring, as my son has to walk or ride a coach for a long time. But the study trip
helps him to step outside our home in Beijing and put away his computer for a while. It is also a great
chance for him to experience life in the beautiful countryside and discover his love of writing,” said
Liu Shuang.
1.What are some of the most popular sightseeing places in China?
2.What are the most popular tourism packages?
3.What did Liu Shuang’s son do in the writing workshop?
4.Would you like to take a study trip during your vacations? Why or why not? (Please give two
reasons. )

If you ask any 12-year-old what their favorite time of the day is, they’ll tell you it’s lunch! But
for Jason, it’s a bit different. He can’t wait to get home and start working on his candle-making
business.
Jason began creating candles because the candles he bought gave his mom headaches. He was
only eight years old at the time. He thought there must be a way to make a safe and all-natural candle.
So, he set out to find a cleaner and more natural way to make a candle that his mom could enjoy. He
was very interested in the process and the chemistry behind making the candles. Later, he found a kind
of wax (蜡) that is chemical-free. He also found natural oils to add scent (香味).
With the support of his mom, he started an online store in 2020. His online orders began picking
up. In the fall of 2022, he opened a store at a local shopping centre. Now people can buy his candles
both online and at the store. The store also sells soaps which are made by Vicky, Jason’s little sister.
She was inspired (鼓舞) by her brother to make her own handmade products.
Jason started his business to save money for his college education. But running a business is
about more than making money for Jason. He also gave some money to the community. The
community spent the money supporting the local homeless shelter (救助站) and helping the kids who
needed a little help with college.
“My future goal is to help people around the world,” he says. His mother is proud of her son and
loves to spend time with him as his business grows. She says it is really inspiring to see how his mind
works.
Jason has a big goal and an even bigger heart. With all the problems that seem to stop many of
us from moving forward, Jason has chosen to find a solution that works, not only for himself, but as
an inspiration to others.
5.Why did Jason begin creating candles?
6.Where can people buy Jason’s candles?
7.How did Jason deal with the money he made?
8.What do you think of Jason? (List at least two points.) Why do you think so?

During my childhood, I didn’t have much interest in reading. However, when I entered middle
school. I began listening to audiobooks and grew to love it. Now, I manage to finish a couple of
audiobooks each month.
While reading a printed book allows more freedom to re-read paragraphs that you didn’t quite
catch, go back to look something up from earlier in the book or even write down some notes in the
margin (页边 空白 ) , audiobooks have their own benefits. They are especially enjoyable and
convenient for both kids and adults. Besides, you ca multitask while listening and get through books
faster.
I often listen to audiobooks before reading paper ones in order to better understand some difficult
parts. Listening is necessary for all kinds of learning, including reading. I can now enjoy longer books
that I might not have had the patience to read, and my ability to focus on audiobooks carries over to
my skill in focusing on a written text.
To me, the coolest thing about audiobooks is the role of the narrator (朗读者) . When you listen to
audiobooks, the narrators do much of the “work” for you, which can be very pleasing when they are
skilled. I like the sense of reading with someone who understands and loves the material. I remember
listening to Charlie ana the Chocolate Factory narrated by the author (作者 ) himself. It was a truly
magical experience!
Audiobooks have become a big part of my life. At home, I love sitting on the sofa, losing myself
in a good story, and then I share my thoughts with my parents. It’s not just about enjoying a good book;
it’s about creating shared moments and conversations.
Audiobooks have changed my life. They make reading fun by bringing stories to life through
skilled narrators and discussing audiobooks with family adds a joyful richness to my everyday
moments.

Great Grandmother Still Studying
At the age of 95, Nola Ochs became one of the world’s oldest college graduates. Ochs received
her bachelor’s degree (学士学位) in general studies and history at Fort Hays State University in May,
2007.
At her graduation ceremony, the crowd gave her a warm welcome. And they kept standing until
the names of all 2176 graduates were read. Her granddaughter, Alexandra Ochs, also appeared on the
list. Nola was interviewed by a famous magazine. She seemed a little embarrassed by all the attention.
“I was just another student,” she said in the interview. However, none of the other graduates was
entered into the Guinness World Records as the world’s oldest college graduate at that time. The
former record holder was Mozelle Richardson, who got a degree from the University of Oklahoma in
2004 at the age of 90.

Ochs went back to university and started pursuing her master’s degree (硕士学位), 2010. Nola Qchs
continued taking classes until she was 100 and died at the age of 105 in 2016. And at that time, she

ChatGPT is a new AI robot. It is a tool made by the company OpenAI in November 2022. They
wanted to show everyone what a very large, powerful AI system can achieve.
ChatGPT remembers your conversations, it makes its answers from lots of information on the
Internet. It can do many other things, such as writing papers, describing art very well, creating AI art

A few days after its launch (上市) , more than 1 million people were trying out ChatGPT. About
100 million people used ChatGPT in February 2023.
However, ChatGPT cannot replace Baidu. ChatGPT is an AI robot that gives answers to your
questions, but Baidu is a website that helps you look for information.
ChatGPT is still new and has a lot of problems. Here are some big problems that experts have
noticed:
1. ChatGPT might give wrong answers. Don’t use it for math questions!
2. ChatGPT might take jobs from humans. It could make it harder for writers, teachers, artists and
computer programmers to make their living.
3. ChatGPT could challenge (挑战) high school writing homework. It will make it easier for students
not to write their own papers and lose their own responsibility (责任).
4. ChatGPT could cause harm to people. If someone asks it a question instead of going to the hospital,
it will be very dangerous.
ChatGPT is a fun and exciting new technology for everyone to use and experiment with. We can
make the best use of ChatGPT for learning. But be careful with it!

Once again, I was at a new school. So was a girl in my class named Paris. That was where the
similarities (相似处) ended.
I was tall and she was small. I was one of the oldest in the class while she was the youngest. My
hair was thick, short and ugly while hers was long and beautiful. I was shy. She wasn’t. I couldn’t
stand her, considering her my enemy. But she wanted to be friends.

10
One day, she invited me over and I said yes. I was too surprised to refuse her invitation. Actually,
no one had invited me over to play before. But this girl wanted to see me.
She lived on the fourth floor in a two-room apartment with her big family. When we got to the
room she shared with her sister, she took out a big case of Barbies, which was really surprising. I had
never played with them. But we sat on the floor laughing as we made up crazy stories about the
Barbies. That’s when we found out that we both wanted to be writers when we were older. We both
had wild imaginations. We had a great time that afternoon.
She charmed (迷住) the whole neighborhood. The bookstore owners lent her fashion magazines,
the movie theater gave her free passes and the pizza place let her have free slices (薄片).
Paris, my first real friend since childhood, helped me get through my tough (艰难的) teenage and
taught me an amazing thing about making friends: The “worst enemy” can turn out to be the best
friend.
29.Why does the writer say “I was too surprised to refuse her invitation” in Paragraph 3?
30.What similarities did they find after the writer came to Paris’ room?
31.In the last paragraph, what did the writer learn from Paris?

How does your teacher make you sit—in rows or in groups? How would you like to sit? Does
sitting in rows make you feel good or does it make you feel lonely? Do you feel that sitting in a group
and discussing things makes you learn more in an easier way?
In the last 30 years or so, experts on teaching methods have thought about these questions. They

felt that sitting in rows was not very useful to children, and that they learnt easier and better when they
sat around a table in a group. That way, they could also learn to get along with others and exchange
ideas easily.
However, it seems they were not quite right. At least Nigel Hastings, professor of Nottingham
Trent University, does not think so. He has been researching classroom behavior for the last 20 years
in England. His conclusion (结论) is that children work much better when they sit in rows than sitting
around in groups.
His study found that students wasted a lot of time talking when they were placed in groups. When
children were made to sit singly or in pairs and not in groups as they were used to, they were more
attentive (专注的) to their work.
Right now, most primary school students in England are seated in groups of four and six
according to Sunday Times. So the report of Nigel’s study could make a big difference to how they
will sit and learn.
33.Why did some experts think sitting in groups was better?
34.What’s the conclusion of Nigel’s study?
35.What happened when students sat in groups in Nigel’s study?
36.How are the most pupils in England seated nowadays?

Passage 10
Ladybugs (瓢虫) are loved by people so much. In many cultures they’re considered good luck.
There are about 5,000 different types of ladybugs in the world. They come in many different colors
and patterns, but the most familiar in the UK is the seven-spot ladybug which has a shiny,
red-and-black body. Most people like ladybugs because they are pretty graceful and harmless to
humans. Farmers also love them very much. They eat aphids (蛀虫) and other plant-eating pests.
Most ladybugs have oval, dome-shaped bodies with six short legs. Depending on the types, they

can have spots, stripes (条纹) or no markings at all. Seven-spot ladybugs are red or sometimes orange
with three spots on each side and one in the middle. Their head is black with white patches (斑点) on
either side. The ladybug’s bright colors can warn animals they’d better not eat them. When they are in
danger, the ladybugs produce an oily, yellow fluid from joints in their legs—and their coloring acts as
a reminder to any predators who have eaten their kind before that they taste disgusting (令人厌恶的)!
These bugs have another trick to avoid danger too—remain still and pretend to be dead. Simple,
eh? Birds are ladybugs’ main predators, but they also fall victims (牺牲品 ) to frogs, spiders and
dragonflies.
Seven-spot ladybugs are native to Europe but were introduced to North America in the mid-1900s
to control aphid populations. These ladybugs are happy in many different habitats (栖息地), including
grasslands, forests, cities, suburbs and along rivers. During spring and summer, when they are most
active, these ladybugs can be seen fluttering around or walking on the leaves of plants. But when the
weather turns colder in autumn, they look for a warm, secluded place to hibernate, such as under rocks
or even inside houses. They like to group together, too.
38.In many cultures what do ladybugs stand for?
39.Why do farmers love ladybugs?
40.What will ladybugs do when they are in danger?
41.Do you love to keep ladybugs as pets? Why or why not? (Write 30 words or more.)

Balloons have a bad effect on our waterways and the ocean, and one California city has decided to
stop people from playing with them in order to protect the coastline.
Not long ago, the Laguna Beach City Council began to ban (禁止) the sale and use of balloons in
public places or at city events. The ban will take effect in 2024. First-time violators (违法者) will face
a $100 fine (罚款), with a $200 fine for a second violation. Each further violation within a year would
cost someone $500. The ban does not apply to use in homes.
Balloons are a cause of plastic pollution, and they are often played with on coastlines, beaches,
and waterways. This is harmful to the creatures in the sea, which may eat balloon pieces, believing
them to be food. Eating these pieces can cause them to get sick. As the balloons get further broken
down into smaller pieces, they also bring microplastic pollution.
It isn’t just beaches that can be destroyed. Whalen says the ban also aims to solve wildfire risk.
The balloons can cause fires by bumping into power lines. They’re also a huge cause of power outages
(停电).
Other Southern California cities have taken similar steps, with Manhattan Beach banning the sale
of balloons and their presence at public outdoor spaces. Glendale and Hermosa Beach have also
placed bans on balloons.
