In the park, you can see more than 700 lakes, 6 National Historic Landmarks, and the famous Highline Trail, which follows the Continental Divide. Make sure to take a scenic drive along the Going-to-the-Sun Road, or even better, join Red Bus Tours to see all the sights.
Yellowstone National Park
This protected area in Wyoming, Montana, and Idaho is America’s first national park, but it is still very beautiful. Mammoth Hot Springs and Old Faithful continue to amaze visitors every year. Less crowded places like Hayden Valley, which is great for seeing wildlife, and Yellowstone Lake, which is perfect for kayaking (独木舟) or canoeing, are also worth visiting.
Yosemite National Park

Evangeline Iarossi is a softball (垒球) player from Tampa, Florida. She played with a softball league, but her community faced several problems. One of them was a lack of available fields for practices and games.
Her local league had some baseball fields, but only one softball field was available. That meant many of her practices were canceled. When the baseball teams needed room, they’d often take over the softball field, making it even harder to practice and play. Iarossi’s team would end up on a T-ball field. “A lot of girls don’t get practice, and they are dropping out,” she said. “When they couldn’t practice because they couldn’t get on the fields, they didn’t improve and finally quit because it was not fun for them anymore.”
Instead of letting others deal with the problem, Iarossi decided to send a handwritten note to the city’s leader, who was a basketball star at the University of Tampa. Her goal was to get support for the cause, but it did much more. Her note inspired the city’s government to provide the funding from an entertainment company to build more fields that are accessible to everyone.
“I said it’s not the 1800s anymore,” Iarossi commented. “Girls would like to play sports too.” It even led to an appearance on a well-known show to discuss her efforts. “I hope that all girls get to play softball, and that it’s just fair for all in sports.”
4. Why did many of the girl softball players give up halfway?
A. They were afraid of getting on the fields. B. They found it hard to play softball well.
C. They were prevented by the local league. D. They lacked practice fields.
5. Who helped Iarossi solve the problem?
A. The University of Tampa. B. The local community.
C. An entertainment company. D. A basketball star.
6. Which words can best describe Iarossi?
A. Modest and honest. B. Helpful and responsible.
C. Quiet and intelligent. D. Friendly and humorous.
7 What is the best title for the text?
A. Win Support for Girls’ Play Opportunities. B. Call for Fairness in All Sports.
C. Public Support Is the Key to Success. D. Practice Makes Perfect.
【答案】4. D 5. C 6. B 7. A

We know that fruits and vegetables can help to keep our bodies healthy. According to a new study, eating fruits in middle age could also help to reduce the chances of developing depression (抑郁) later in life though we should pay attention to the amount of fruits we eat.
Researchers from China and Singapore wanted to find out more about whether eating fruits and vegetables could have an effect on our mental health. They looked at more than 13,700 Chinese adults who were living in Singapore. The study period began between 1993 and 1998 when the Chinese adults were aged between 45 and 74. Everyone was asked about the fruits and vegetables they liked to eat. 14 fruits and 25 types of vegetables were included in the questionnaire (问卷).
The Chinese adults were followed for an average of almost 20 years. By this time, they were aged between 61 and 96. They were asked to complete a questionnaire that could decide whether older people develop depression. At the end of the study period, almost 3,200 people had the feeling of depression.
The researchers found that higher consumption of fruits during middle age was connected with a lower probability of developing depression in late life. Those who ate the most fruits were 29% less likely to develop depression compared to those who ate the least. However, they didn’t find any connection between eating vegetables and developing depression.
It was suggested that the reason for this may be that fruits are usually eaten raw, while vegetables are often cooked. Cooking vegetables might limit the “protective effects” of the nutrients (营养物) in the foods, the researchers suggested, although they said more research was needed.
All types of fruits were found to have an effect, especially oranges, bananas, papayas and watermelons.
8. How is the study conducted?
A By talking with people living in China. B. By filling in the questionnaire in a lab.
C. By comparing fruits to many vegetables. D. By researching subjects for a long time.
9. What does the underlined word “consumption” in paragraph 4 probably mean?
A. Eating. B. Contact. C. Advancement. D. Concentration.
10. What do we know about the influence of vegetables on depression?
A. They prove better than fruits. B. Researchers have got no related proof.
C. They are the key to treating depression. D. Cooking them influences mental health.
11. What might be talked about in the following paragraph?
A. Exploring the correct methods of cooking vegetables.
B. Describing different fruits recommended by the doctor.
C. Further discussing why fruits could decrease depression.
D. Explaining how vegetables damage nutrients in the foods.
【答案】8. D 9. A 10. B 11. C

Heat waves don’t just make bumblebees (大黄蜂) hot. High temperatures also seem to seriously reduce their sense of smell, which can be very bad for their survival. For bumblebees, being able to smell flowers is a matter of life or death because it helps them find food.
Bumblebees are already known to suffer from climate change. So, an insect ecologist from the University of Würzburg in Germany and her team wanted to understand if heat waves could influence bumblebees’ ability to smell flowers.
The researchers put around 190 bumblebees from two common species into small special rooms for almost three hours at temperatures of 40℃ to simulate (模拟) heat waves. Some bumblebees were also put in a dry environment; some had ways to sugary resources; some were given time to recover at normal temperatures for 24 hours after the heat treatment. After the simulated heat waves, the researchers cut off the bumblebees’ antennae (触须), which they use to smell, and measured whether the olfactory sensory neurons (the cells that help them smell) in the antennae could still detect flower scents.
The heat waves reduced the bumblebees’ ability to smell by up to 80 percent. Worker bumblebees, which are all female, were more affected than male bumblebees. Even worse, the antennae of the bumblebees that had 24 hours to cool off still didn’t recover their sense of smell after that time. “That was surprising,” said the insect ecologist. This suggests the bumblebees don’t recover quickly, which means they might have trouble finding food. “It could be one reason why we see so many bumblebee population drops,” she added, along with other factors like habitat loss.
“The study seems pretty reliable,” said a bumblebee ecologist from the University of Sussex in Brighton, England, who didn’t take part in the study. “The antennae are quite similar across bee species,” he added. “If bumblebees suffer in this way, I think it’s probable that other bees would too. But we won’t know for sure until someone does research on it.”
12. What problem might bumblebees face in the end because of heat waves?
A. Food shortage. B. Habitat loss.
C. Death risk. D. Sensory failure.
13. Why were some bumblebees given 24 hours to recover after the treatment?
A. To prove if hot waves damage their sense of smell.
B. To make sure they can adapt to the environment.
C. To prevent the researchers making mistakes.
D. To persuade other people into believing the research.
14. What does the insect ecologist think of the research result?
A. It takes researchers’ doubts away. B. It goes beyond her control.
C. It limits the scientific research. D. It leads to a good method.
15. What can we learn about other bees according to the bumblebee ecologist?
A. More researchers are studying them. B. They will suffer from death.
C. They will be well protected. D. There is still a lot to study.
【答案】12. C 13. A 14. A 15. D

I lost all my hair at age two due to alopecia (脱发). At school, I wore a wig (假发), and it made me feel very different from everyone else. Despite this, I found comfort in sports. I loved playing basketball and was good at it. Every day after school, I would race home and play basketball in my driveway for hours. When I played, I didn’t think about my alopecia or my bald head. Instead, I thought about who I wanted to become and what I wanted to achieve.
As I got better at basketball, people started to notice me for my skills. I became known as the girl who was good at basketball. I focused all my time and energy on becoming the best basketball player I could be. I had big dreams and was determined not to let anything, including my alopecia, hold me back.
In junior high school, I had a great career and broke many school records. When I got to senior high school, I met Mr Smith, the best teacher I had ever had. He was very outgoing and seemed to understand how I felt. However, I still didn’t feel comfortable talking about my alopecia and just wanted to be like everyone else. The only thing that made me happy was playing basketball and improving my skills. It helped me forget about my alopecia and made my classmates respect me.
One day, I heard that our school team was choosing new members. I signed up and was excited to have a chance to show my skills. I trained harder than ever. But before the selection day, I heard someone had known my secret about alopecia.
Even though I was worried, I knew that basketball had given me the strength and confidence to face any challenge. I was ready to show everyone what I could do, no matter what they thought about my hair.

【答案】At the deepest of my sadness, Mr Smith came. He patted me on the shoulder, saying quietly, “Lindsay, you have an active attitude to realize your dream. You have won our respect.” Lowering my head, I whispered to him, “But they knew my truth. They might see me differently.” My teacher comforted me, “You can’t determine your alopecia, but you can decide your future with your excellent skills. Why not use your strength to achieve your dreams?” With blood burning through my body, I looked my teacher in the eyes and said firmly yes to him.
I decided to prove myself using my own skills. The next day, I arrived early at the playground, waiting for the beginning of the tryout. When it was my turn, I showed my high-level movements and skills smoothly to other teachers. The audience standing around burst into cheers, too. To my surprise, I was finally chosen to be a member of the school team. I couldn’t thank my teacher enough. I know it is not what I look like that makes me successful, but being an active person and always offering a smile to someone.

7. What is the best title for the text?
A. Win Support for Girls’ Play Opportunities. B. Call for Fairness in All Sports.
C. Public Support Is the Key to Success. D. Practice Makes Perfect.

They looked at more than 13700 Chinese adults who were living in Singapore.
A. By talking with people living in China.
D
A More researchers are studying them. B. They will suffer from death.
C. They will be well protected. D. There is still a lot to study.

1.续写词数应为150个左右;
