A. You can keep the books as long as you like. B. Books aren’t allowed to be taken out of the club. C. The members in the club have to take down their ideas. D. You can choose your favorite books to read in the club. B Most environmental pollution on Earth comes from humans and their inventions, such as cars or plastic (塑料). Today, car emissions (排放物) are a major source of air pollution leading to climate change, and plastics fill our ocean, creating a health issue to marine (海洋的) animals. And what about the electric light, thought to be one of the greatest human inventions of all time? Electric light can be a beautiful thing, guiding us home when the sun goes down, keeping us safe and making our homes bright. However, like carbon dioxide emissions and plastic, too much of a good thing has started to influence the environment. Light pollution, the unsuitable use of outdoor light, is affecting human health, wildlife behavior and our ability to observe stars. Light pollution is a global problem. This became obvious when the World Atlas of Artificial Night Sky Brightness, a digital map based on thousands of satellite (卫星) photos, was published in 2016. Online for viewing, the map shows how and where our globe is lit up at night. Vast areas of North America, Europe, the Middle East and Asia are glowing (发光) with light, while only the most remote regions (偏远地区) on Earth (Greenland, Central African Republic and Niue) are in total darkness. Some of the most light-polluted countries in the world are Singapore, Qatar, and Kuwait. Sky glow is the brightening of the night sky, mostly over cities, because of the electric lights of cars, street lamps, offices, factories, outdoor advertising, and buildings, turning night into day for people who work and play long after sunset. People living in cities with high levels of sky glow have a hard time seeing more than a handful of stars at night. Astronomers (天文学家) are concerned with sky glow pollution as it reduces their ability to view stars. They are running out of places on Earth to set up observatories, as even the most remote locations are witnessing a reduction in the darkness of night skies. 4. What can we learn from paragraph 2? A. The use of outdoor light must be stopped. B. Electric light has both advantages and disadvantages. C. Electric light is the main reason to keep us safe. D. Electric light is the greatest human invention. 5. Which of the following places is least affected by sky glow? A. Qatar. B. Singapore. C. Kuwait. D. Niue. 6. Why do astronomers especially complain about sky glow? A. They can’t afford to set up observatories. B. Sky glow has a bad effect on their life. C. Sky glow make their work challenging. D. Sky glow wastes too much electricity. 7. What is the best title for the text? A. Shadows of Progress: The Dark Side of Electric Light B. Beyond the Glow: Understanding Light Effects C. A World Develop Too Fast: The Challenge of Pollution D. A Global Problem: Plastics and Emissions C Amanda Gorman, a 22-year-old poet, recited (朗诵) her poem The Hill We Climb at the recent Presidential Inauguration (总统就职) Ceremony. Her words and performance were wonderful and were admired across the world. But what is even more wonderful is the story of how Amanda arrived at this moment and the lessons she offers other kids around the world. Amanda was raised by a single mother, Joan Wicks, in Los Angeles. There was very little television watching in their house. Encouraged by her mother, who was a teacher, Amanda fell in love with reading and writing. She gained confidence in these areas. Her passion for poetry started when she was about 8 years old. But apart from her interests and talents, she had some obstacles. Amanda has a listening disorder and is very sensitive (敏感) to sound. She also had a speech disorder during childhood. This caused her to participate in speech treatment which helped her to turn her obstacles into gifts and strengths. As she told The Harvard Gazette in 2018, “I always saw it as an advantage because since I was experiencing these obstacles in terms of my listening and speech skills, I became really good at reading and writing.” Amanda started to dream of becoming president when she was in 6th grade. As Amanda became more confident, she became more driven to transform the world for good. She went on to earn a degree at Harvard University. And then, Amanda became the world’s first Youth Poet’ Laureate (获奖者) in history! While Amanda looked calm cool, and collected at the inauguration, she admits she is always nervous, like many of us, about public speaking. To ease this, she developed a spell that she recites to give herself confidence in moments of doubt, “I am the daughter of black writers. We are descendants (后代) of freedom fighters who broke through chains (链条) and changed the world.” 8. What do we know about Amanda Gorman? A. She started writing thanks to the guidance of her teacher. B She published her first poem at the age of 8. C. She won recognition for standout performance in a ceremony. D. She became the first Youth Poet Laureate at high school. 9. What does the underlined word “obstacles” mean in paragraph 3? A. Discouragements. B. Changes. C. Strengths. D. Disabilities. 10. How did Amanda overcome her nervousness about public speech? A. By seeking support from some black writers. B. By reciting special sentences to herself. C. By practicing the speech content repeatedly. D. By talking to freedom fighters before the speech. 11. What is the author’s purpose in writing the text? A. To share a funny story. B. To educate disabled kids. C. To record a wonderful moment. D. To encourage more children. D If you think shopping online is more eco-friendly than driving to a store, think again. It may sound strange, but the more eco-friendly way to shop is going to a physical store rather than by making purchases online from companies that don’t have physical stores, according to a new report in Environmental Science& Technology, a peer-reviewed scientific journal published by the American Chemical Society. In the study, researchers estimated that shopping at physical stores for frequently bought items such as toilet paper, shampoo and toothpaste, often results in less greenhouse gas emissions (排放) than ordering the products from a company that only sells through the Internet. The main reason is because of how people shop online: Many buy items online frequently — but they only buy a few items per purchase. “When they shop in a store, they aggregate these items in a single large purchase,” noted Sadegh Shahmohammadi, one of six researchers who worked on the year-and-a-half long study. “Frequent online purchases produce more packaging waste, and online items tend to come from different distribution (配送) centers. Both factors result in higher greenhouse gas emissions per item,” said Shahmohammadi. The team modeled their research on the movement of goods from the factory all the way through to the end consumer. They then specifically focused on the part of the retail supply chain (零售供应链) called “the last mile” delivery: the distance between a store to a customer, or in the case of online shopping, the distance between the distribution center for the goods to the customer. The analysis showed that total greenhouse gas footprints per item purchased were higher from physical stores than those from bricks& clicks (when people order online and a physical store delivers the items to them) purchases in 63% of the shopping events but lower than those of pure players (strictly online sellers) in 81% of shopping events. 12. What’s the author’s purpose in mentioning the new report? A. To recommend a strange shopping habit. B. To introduce a respected scientific journal. C. To analyze online shopping. D. To prove the advantage of offline shopping. 13. What does the underlined word “aggregate” in paragraph 4 mean? A. Combine. B. Produce. C. Divide. D. Check. 14. What can we learn about “the last mile” delivery? A. It is designed by the research team. B. It is managed by the factories. C. It causes high greenhouse gas emissions. D. It influences the total greenhouse gas footprints. 15. According to the analysis, which is probably the most eco-friendly way to shop? A Buying at physical stores. B. Buying from bricks & clicks. C. Buying from pure players. D. Buying a few items per time. E Forget privacy, young internet users want to be tracked On every smartphone there sits a tracker’s paradise (乐园) of location data ready to be shared. ____16____ And this tech is marketed as convenient, not frightening. What is an acceptable level of online surveillance (监视)? I had assumed we all agreed that the ideal was none. ____17____ A quick enquiry on my friends found that those who were, like me, in their 40s and older either had no idea they could use their phone in this way or had relatively little interest in doing so. But friends a decade or so younger all seem to be tracking one another at will. They don’t find the idea of monitoring or being monitored in this way upsetting. They say it makes them feel safer. ____18____ It is just that they are realistic about the privacy that is available. They know that if you own a smartphone and don’t want to disable useful things like maps, then your location is already being watched. If app creators, smartphone makers and ad companies are already tracking your location, then why not share the information with people you know? If you want to start tracking the people you know, then there are some rules involved. It’s fine to use tracking to check that a friend has got home safely at the end of a night out, for example, but not to surprise them on the street. And think carefully about whom you share data with. ____19____ Location tracking as a safety measure, particularly for elderly parents and children, is appealing. ____20____ Once you grow comfortable sharing your location with your family and friends, perhaps one day you’ll be happy to share it with your employer or even government agencies. A. It is for family and close friends only, not new dates. B. But the truth is how popular it is depends on your age. C. Location sharing has been around for more than a decade. D. The risk is that if you do it too often, it will be hard to turn around. E. After all, no one will find it comfortable to be watched all the time. F. This is not because they are blind to the importance of online privacy. G. Location tracking is so precise that it can locate one person in a crowd. 二、完形填空(1•15=15分) There have been times over the years when I have tried to leave Hailsham behind, when I have told myself I shouldn’t look back so much. 根据划线单词后的“Amanda has a listening disorder and is very sensitive(敏感)to sound. She also had a speech disorder during childhood. 故选A。 根据尾段中的“While Amanda looked calm, cool, and collected at the inauguration, she admits she is always nervous, like many of us, about public speaking. To ease this, she developed a spell that she recites to give herself confidence in moments of doubt, “I am the daughter of black writers. We are descendants (后代) of freedom fighters who broke through chains (链条) and changed the world.” 根据首段中的“Her words and performance were wonderful and were admired across the world. But what is even more wonderful is the story of how Amanda arrived at this moment and the lessons she offers other kids around the world. D。 D If you think shopping online is more eco-friendly than driving to a store, think again. A. Buying at physical stores. B. Buying from bricks & clicks. C. Buying from pure players. D. Buying a few items per time. D 13. A 14. D 15. 根据第一段的“If you think shopping online is more eco-friendly than driving to a store, think again.(如果你认为网上购物比开车去商店更环保,请三思而后行)”以及第二段“It may sound strange, but the more eco-friendly way to shop is going to a physical store rather than by making purchases online from companies that don’t have physical stores, according to a new report in Environmental Science& Technology, a peer-reviewed scientific journal published by the American Chemical Society.(这听起来可能很奇怪,但根据美国化学学会出版的同行评审科学期刊《环境科学与技术》的一份新报告,更环保的购物方式是去实体店,而不是从没有实体店的公司在线购物)”可推知,作者提到该报告是为了证明线下购物的好处。 根据第四段的“The main reason is because of how people shop online: Many buy items online frequently — but they only buy a few items per purchase.(主要原因是人们在网上购物的方式:许多人经常在网上购物,但每次只买几件)”以及划线单词后面的“in a single large purchase(一次性大额购买)”可知, “aggregate these items in a single large purchase”的意思应该是与前文相反,表示当他们在商店购物时,他们会将这些商品合并为一笔大额购买,所以划线单词的意思应该是“集合,加在一起”。故选 A。 根据第五段““Frequent online purchases produce more packaging waste, and online items tend to come from different distribution (配送) centers. Both factors result in higher greenhouse gas emissions per item,” said Shahmohammadi.(“频繁的在线购买会产生更多的包装浪费,在线商品往往来自不同的配送中心。这两个因素都会导致每件商品的温室气体排放量增加,”Shahmohammadi说)”以及第六段的“They then specifically focused on the part of the retail supply chain (零售供应链) called “the last mile” delivery: the distance between a store to a customer, or in the case of online shopping, the distance between the distribution center for the goods to the customer.(然后,他们特别关注零售供应链中被称为“最后一英里”交付的部分:商店到客户之间的距离,或者在网上购物的情况下,货物配送中心到客户之间)”可推知,“the last mile” delivery(最后一英里配送)指从商店到顾客或从配送中心到顾客的距离,这一部分影响了总的温室气体足迹。 根据最后一段“The analysis showed that total greenhouse gas footprints per item purchased were higher from physical stores than those from bricks& clicks (when people order online and a physical store delivers the items to them) purchases in 63% of the shopping events but lower than those of pure players (strictly online sellers) in 81% of shopping events.(分析显示,在63%的购物活动中,实体店购买的每件商品的温室气体排放总量高于bricks & clicks(当人们在网上订购,实体店将商品交付给他们时)的购买量,但在81%的购物事件中低于纯粹的参与者(严格意义上的在线卖家))”可知,根据分析显示,在线上加线下(bricks & clicks)购物方式中,温室气体排放量在大多数购物事件中低于纯在线购物方式(pure players)。 B。 E Forget privacy, young internet users want to be tracked On every smartphone there sits a tracker’s paradise (乐园) of location data ready to be shared. ____16____ And this tech is marketed as convenient, not frightening. What is an acceptable level of online surveillance (监视)? I had assumed we all agreed that the ideal was none. ____17____ A quick enquiry on my friends found that those who were like me, in their 40s and older either had no idea they could use their phone in this way or had relatively little interest in doing so. D.
