I was said to be the worst student in my class and my family thought I was hopeless. I had to repeat the sixth grade. At that time a new teacher, Miss Sadia, came to our school.
One day after class, she noticed that I was staying alone during the lunch break. She came to me and began to talk to me. It was just a normal conversation: After that day, she gave me much attention and it made me feel special. I started to go all out because she gave me the feeling that someone believed me, and my grades started to improve in her subject.
Months later, she moved into a house near my home. We would walk home together after start school. Her constant support helped me, especially in my studies, as I knew she would check my grades both in her subject and the other subjects. I finally came second in my class.
Then, after the sixth grade, she started to drift apart but still kept a check on me. By the time I was in the seventh grade, she hardly spoke to me, but by then I had become the best in my class. When I left school, I was out of touch with her as she never answered the phone when I called her.
Then I graduated and went to a good university. One fine day, our paths crossed again. I met her at a wedding. I could not help asking her,“Why did you stop talking to me?”
“You are a clever boy. I wanted you to be a tree standing on your own roots, not depending on others. Now here you are and I feel proud of you. You are your inspiration and do not need to look for a shoulder,” she said. I could not say anything, but I smiled. I’ll always thank her.

While screen time is known to affect sleep, new research suggests that interactive (互动的) activities, such as texting friends or playing video games, put off and reduce the time spent asleep to a greater degree than passive (被动的) screen time like watching television, especially for teens.
The team studied the daytime screen-based activities of 475 teenagers using daily surveys. They asked the teens how many hours they had spent that day communicating with friends through social media and how many hours they spent playing video games, surfing the Internet and watching television or videos. Finally, the researchers asked if they had joined in any of these activities in the hour before bed.
Next, the team measured their sleep time for one week. The researchers found that the teens spent an average of two hours per day communicating with friends via social media, about 1.3 hours playing video games, less than an hour surfing the Internet and about 1.7 hours watching television or videos. For every hour throughout the day that they used screens to communicate with friends, they fell asleep about 11 minutes later averagely. For every hour to play video games, they fell asleep about 9 minutes later. Those who talked, texted or played games in the hour before bed lost the most sleep: about 30 minutes later.
Interestingly, David, lead author of the study, said the team found no obvious relations between passive screen-based activities and sleep. “It could be that passive activities are less mentally exciting than interactive activities,” said Anne, co-author of the study. “It’s a tricky situation,” she said. “These screen tools are really important to everyone nowadays, so it’s hard to put a limit on them, but if you’re really looking out for a teenager’s health and well-being, you might consider limiting the more interactive activities, especially in the hour before bed.”
8. Which of the following belongs to interactive screen activities?
A. Surfing the Internet. B. Watching videos.
C. Texting friends. D. Seeing movies.
9. Who might lose the most sleep according to the text?
A. Sam who played computer games for two hours throughout the day.
B. Jack who had a 30-minute video chat with his brother before bed.
C. Lucy who watched a three-hour movie before going to bed.
D. Amy who chatted with her friends on WeChat for one hour in the morning.
10. What is the likely reason that passive screen activities have less impact on sleep compared to interactive activities?
A. Passive activities are less mentally exciting.
B. Passive activities are more mentally engaging.
C. Passive activities are more physically demanding.
D. Passive activities are more socially interactive
11. What’s the main idea of the passage?
A. Screen time activities cut down our sleep hours
B. Parents should prevent children from using social media
C. Passive screen use is better than interactive screen use
D. Interactive screen use reduces sleep time in teenagers
D
People who have trouble walking or moving around often have a hard time enjoying the beach. But hundreds of beaches in Greece now offer a new solution called Seatrac, which allows people in wheelchairs to get into the water on their own.
Seatrac is basically a chair on a moving walkway that can smoothly carry a disabled person into the sea. Once in the sea, the person can either remain in the chair, enjoying the water; or go for a swim. The chair can be controlled from a long distance. When the person is ready to get out of the water, the Seatrac system(系统) brings the chair back to the top of the walkway.
Seatrac was invented and developed in Greece. The idea for it came when one of the inventors, Fotiou, was talking with a friend who used a wheelchair. The friend expressed his enjoyment of the sea but disliked being carried into the ocean like “a bag of potatoes”. Fotiou realized there must be a way to make it easier for wheelchair users to get into the water. He worked with his partners to design the system, finally forming a company called TOBEA to build and sell the system.
TOBEA works on making the system simple to put in place and easy to control. A wooden walkway allows wheelchair users to reach Seatrac. The system is solar-powered(太阳能) and can continue to run even if the electricity goes out. The Seatrac system can be easily packed up and stored when the swimming season ends.
Greece has decided to open 287 beaches for people with disabilities. 140 beaches have set up the system and the remaining 147 will build the system in the future. The new Seatrac service is being provided for free to help attract more tourists to the country. TOBEA will offer a website showing where beaches with the special service can be found. Thanks to Seatrac, more and more people who use wheelchairs will have the chance to cool down witha swim in the sea.
12. What does paragraph 2 mainly talk about?
A. Why Seatrac needs hand control. B. How Seatrac is developed.
C. Why Seatrac is well received. D. How Seatrac works.
13. What can we know about the Seatrac system?
A. It requires a large storage space. B. It can be used all year round.
C. It’s environmentally friendly. D. It’s expensive to use.
14. What do the numbers in the last paragraph show?
A. The new service is promising.
B. The practice is being copied around the world.
C. The government has made much money.
D. The system is highly praised by the old.
15. What can be the best title for the text?
A. Greece Has Built Moving Walkways for the Disabled
B. Seatrac: Helping Wheelchair Users Enjoy the Sea.
C. TOBEA Is a Famous Factory Producing Wheelchairs
D. Fotiou: An Inventor Helping the Disabled

C Lucy who watched a three-hour movie before going to bed.
C 9. B 10. A 11. D
根据第一段“While screen time is known to affect sleep, new research suggests that interactive (互动的) activities, such as texting friends or playing video games, put off and reduce the time spent asleep to a greater degree than passive (被动的) screen time like watching television, especially for teens. (虽然看屏幕的时间会影响睡眠,但新的研究表明,互动活动,如给朋友发短信或玩电子游戏,比看电视等被动屏幕时间更能推迟和减少睡眠时间,尤其是对青少年来说。)”可知,给朋友发短信属于交互式屏幕活动。故选C。
【9题详解】
细节理解题。根据第三段中“Those who talked, texted or played games in the hour before bed lost the most sleep: about 30 minutes later. (那些在睡前一小时聊天、发短信或玩游戏的人失眠最严重:大约30分钟后才入睡)”可知,杰克在睡觉前和他哥哥视频聊了30分钟可能会失去最多的睡眠。故选B。
【10题详解】
细节理解题。根据第四段中““It could be that passive activities are less mentally exciting than interactive activities,” said Anne, co-author of the study. (该研究的合著者安妮说:“可能是因为被动性活动在精神上不像互动性活动那样令人兴奋。”)”可知,被动性屏幕活动相较于互动性活动对睡眠影响较小的可能原因是被动活动在精神上没那么刺激。故选A。
通读全文,尤其是根据第一段“While screen time is known to affect sleep, new research suggests that interactive (互动的) activities, such as texting friends or playing video games, put off and reduce the time spent asleep to a greater degree than passive (被动的) screen time like watching television, especially for teens. (虽然看屏幕的时间会影响睡眠,但新的研究表明,互动活动,如给朋友发短信或玩电子游戏,比看电视等被动屏幕时间更能推迟和减少睡眠时间,尤其是对青少年来说。)”、第三段中“Those who talked, texted or played games in the hour before bed lost the most sleep: about 30 minutes later. (那些在睡前一小时内聊天、发短信或玩游戏的人睡眠缺失最为严重:大约会推迟 30 分钟才能入睡。)”以及最后一段““It could be that passive activities are less mentally exciting than interactive activities,” said Anne, co-author of the study. “It’s a tricky situation,” she said. “These screen tools are really important to everyone nowadays, so it’s hard to put a limit on them, but if you’re really looking out for a teenager’s health and well-being, you might consider limiting the more interactive activities, especially in the hour before bed.”

The idea for it came when one of the inventors Fotiou, was talking with a friend who used a wheelchair.
D 13. C 14. A 15. B
根据第二段“Seatrac is basically a chair on a moving walkway that can smoothly carry a disabled person into the sea. Once in the sea, the person can either remain in the chair, enjoying the water; or go for a swim. The chair can be controlled from a long distance. (Seatrac基本上是一个移动人行道上的椅子,可以平稳地将残疾人送入大海。一旦到了海里,人可以留在椅子上,享受水;或者去游泳。这把椅子可以远距离操控。)”可知,第二段主要介绍了Seatrac系统是如何工作的。故选D。
【13题详解】
推理判断题。根据第四段第三句话“TOBEA works on making the system simple to put in place and easy to control. A wooden walkway allows wheelchair users to reach Seatrac. The system is solar-powered (太阳能) and can continue to run even if the electricity goes out. The Seatrac system can be easily packed up and stored when the swimming season ends.(TOBEA致力于使系统易于安装和控制。一条木制走道可以让轮椅使用者到达Seatrac。该系统由太阳能供电,即使停电也能继续运行。Seatrac系统可以在游泳季节结束时轻松打包和储存)”可知,Seatrac有太阳能供电,即使停电也能继续运行。由此可推知,该系统是环保的。故选C。
【14题详解】
推理判断题。根据最后一段前两句话“Greece has decided to open 287 beaches for people with disabilities. 140 beaches have set up the system and the remaining 147 will build the system in the future. (希腊决定为残疾人开放287个海滩。140个泳滩已安装该系统,其余147个泳滩将在未来安装该系统。)”可知,已经有很多的海滩使用了Seatrac系统,而且还有许多的海滩将来要建立该系统。由此可推知,该系统是很有前景的。故选A。
根据文章第一段“But hundreds of beaches in Greece now offer a new solution called Seatrac, which allows people in wheelchairs to get into the water on their own. (但希腊数百个海滩现在提供了一种名为Seatrac的新解决方案,允许坐在轮椅上的人自己下水。)”以及全文可知,本文主要介绍了一项新发明Seatrac系统,可以帮助轮椅使用者享受大海。所以B项:Seatrac: Helping Wheelchair Users Enjoy the Sea.(Seatrac:帮助轮椅使用者享受大海)适合作本文的标题。故选B。

根据上文“We all want to be successful. (我们都想要成功)”和下文“We tend to focus directly on the end goals, failing to realize our big goals are not going to happen overnight. (我们倾向于直接关注最终目标,而没有意识到我们的大目标不会在一夜之间发生。)”可知,上文提到我们都想要成功,下文提到我们没有意识到远大的目标不是在一夜之间就能实现的,所以空处与上文是转折关系,是说明在通往成功的漫长道路上可能会出现的问题,F项“但在通往成功的道路上,我们有时也会感到气馁”符合语境,故选F。

根据本段主题句“Reward (犒劳) yourself.(犒劳自己)”和空后一句“It could be anything from treating yourself to your favorite coffee or even taking a trip somewhere. (它可以是任何事情,从请自己喝你最喜欢的咖啡,甚至是去某个地方旅行)”可知,本段是说要犒劳自己,做自己最喜欢的事情,E项“每次完成一个步骤,做你最喜欢的事情”符合语境,下文是对E项中“what you enjoy the most”的具体列举。故选E。
【19题详解】

【20题详解】
上文“It will remind you how far you’ve come in achieving your goal. (它会提醒你在实现目标的过程中已经走了多远)”是描述记录下点滴进步的意义,G项“此外,看到所有的小胜利都被记录下来本身就是一种奖励”进一步说明记录进步的意义,故选G。
