The Children’s Theatre of Cincinnati will present Cinderella Wore Cowboy Boots for one night only on Jan. 26. The traveling show is for children aged 4 and up and promises “knee-slapping” comedic moments and heartwarming life lessons. “I love children’s theatre,” says Rosvic Siason, who plays Cinderella. “Kids are our future and we introduce them to these stories. We all have situations at one point in our life that look like this conversation. It just kind of helps you develop your brain and learn how to think as a developing person. It’s really important to expose kids to theatre and well-rounded actors they can talk to for guidance.” These one-man, one-woman shows have so much beauty because they are very raw. People actually follow along much easier than you think. It’s easy to share a feeling. They will be promoted to interact, deliver lines and repeat after Cinderella throughout the production. Cinderella Wore Cowboy Boots will deliver a funny, meaningful twist on the classic fairy tale that encourages audiences to expand their imagination. “Using imagination helps kids to think of things in more ways than one,” Siason says. “It opens them up and makes them think, ‘Hey, this is one way this could work.’ Or ‘I could try this way, and then see what happens.’” Visit fairfield-city.org for tickets and more information. 21. What is Cinderella Wore Cowboy Boots? A. A book. B. A theatre. C. A lesson. D. A performance. 22. Siason thinks stories in children’s theatre can ________. A. offer temporary amusement B. help deal with life’s challenges C. allow individuals to avoid reality D. provide opportunities to make friends 23. What might Siason encourage children to do? A. Stick to the rules. B. Dare to dream big. C. Think outside the box. D. Stay with the crowd. B In August 2020, our family received terrible news. My daughter Camille was pregnant, and a routine ultrasound revealed that her baby, a little girl named Lila, was in danger. Camille and her husband, Jarrett, lived in Knoxville, Tenn., where they were finishing their undergraduate degree. But my wife, Nancy, and I knew they were coming home to live with us for a while outside Nashville. Vanderbilt Children’s Hospital was not far away, and Lila was placed in the care of a brilliant doctor named Irving Zamora. On Dec.15, Lila was born. It’d be too much to say she was “healthy”. But after a few operations, the girl we thought might die was very much alive. It was a miracle. Two weeks later, Lila came home, to our home. Three generations were under one roof. We have a tiny apartment over our garage, and that’s where Camille, Jarrett and Lila settled for most of the next two and a half years. And then, in March, they added one more — a healthy baby boy named Ezra. For more than two years our house was bursting at the seams. Two grandparents worked full-time from home. A young mom and dad also worked and studied for the LSAT. Our college-age son, Austin, was in and out, depending on his school schedule. And our teenage daughter, Naomi, finished middle school and started high school. Add in two grandbabies and two poorly trained dogs, and ours was not the kind of house you’d drop by and discover a state of perfect calm and order. One of the great joys of aging is watching the people you love grow into each of their new roles, like slowly blooming flowers that reveal petals of different colors. I see my older daughter as a mother, my younger daughter as an aunt and my son as an uncle. And Nancy, the girl I met and fell in love with during a conversation on a college sidewalk? She’s a mom and a grandmother now, and each new dimension of her character causes me to love her even more. 24. Why did Camille move to Nashville? A. To look for well-paid jobs. B. To learn from a doctor. C. To get better care for her baby. D. To attend to her parents. 25. Which can replace the underlined words in paragraph 3? A. Was full of people. B. Was quite short of money. C. Became very calm and orderly. D. Experienced feelings of grief and joy. 26. What can be inferred about the author from the last paragraph? A. He feels his age. B. He is satisfied with his life. C. His wife teaches in a college. D. His younger daughter is in middle school. 27. What does the author intend to convey in the text? A. The bad news can become a great joy. B. When we want to have more roses, we must plant trees. C. Miracles sometimes occur, but one has to work terribly for them. D. Great works are performed not by strength, but by perseverance. C Long lines with hundreds of baited hooks (铒钩) catch commercially valuable fish. But they also catch sharks and rays, turtles and birds. This harms ecosystems. And removing the unwanted creatures takes time, can be dangerous, and may damage the equipment. The size of the world’s bycatch, as such unwanted captures are called, is hard to measure. The fishing industry is huge, and much activity is unreported, unregulated and sometimes illegal. But a study published last year estimated that only half of the animals hooked by a long lining fleet in the Pacific Ocean were tuna (the intended target). The rest were bycatch. Sharks and rays, known collectively as elasmobranchs, seem particularly vulnerable. Some are sought deliberately, but a lot die as bycatch. Since 1970, the numbers have crashed by more than 70%. Part of the answer to that might be to discourage elasmobranchs from taking the bait without simultaneously discouraging target species such as tuna. Research carried out recently by a group at Exeter University, in England, suggests a small British company called FishTek Marine may have devised a way of doing just that. The work in question, just published in Current Biology by Phillip Doherty and his colleagues, tested small cylindrical devices the company calls SharkGuards, which fit just above the hooks on long lines. Every two seconds they generate a strong electrical signal. Elasmobranchs can detect these and then avoid them. The team tested the device in 2021 on two fishing boats in southern France. They put SharkGuards on half of the 900 hooks of each of 22 long lines deployed by these boats, while leaving the other half as per normal. The hooks were sufficiently far apart on the lines that a device emitting a burst from one would not, they hoped, interfere with its neighbour. Then, once the lines had done their stuff, they analysed the resulting catches. The results were impressive. Of the two local elasmobranchs, hooks fitted with SharkGuards caught 91% fewer blue sharks and 71% fewer stingrays than those without one did. 28. What are long lines with baited hooks aimed at hunting? A. Turtles. B. Rays. C. Tuna. D. Sharks. 29. What does the underlined word “vulnerable” in paragraph 2 probably mean? A. Well protected. B. Easily hurt. C. Physically challenged. D. Widely welcomed. 30. What has FishTek Marine developed to address the issue of bycatch? A. A device warning elasmobranchs against the bait. B. A special type of bait appealing to the target species. C. A type of hook that is less attractive to nontarget species. D. A system that uses sound waves to scare away sharks and rays. 31. What is the purpose of the author in writing the last paragraph? A. To find the places where SharkGuards are used. B. To explore the principle of SharkGuards. C. To test the limitation of SharkGuards. D. To show SharkGuards are helpful. D Becoming a successful athlete is an admirable aspiration, but it’s important to keep a sense of perspective. Only 180 of 1.5 million youth footballers in the UK are likely to reach their goal and make it as professional players in the Premier League. I’ve done the math for you and here’s some bad news: 99.99 percent of all young football hopeful s will end up disappointed. Similarly, male basketball players in the US only have a 0.03 percent chance of turning their sporty hobby into a professional career. Losing sight of the overall statistics and ignoring the objective chances of success is a common mistake when following big role models. This tendency has been termed “Survivorship Bias”. It refers to people overestimating their likelihood of succeeding by focusing on a few lucky overachievers or “survivors”, who managed to beat the odds. Sure, a handful of outstanding athletes fulfil their dreams of winning multiple Olympic medals. However, these athletes are the exception, not the rule. They represent rare outliers on the normal distribution curve of athletic achievement. While evidence for survivorship bias is plentiful, you may question its negative consequences. Surely, role models can be strong motivators, inspiring ordinary people to surpass themselves, grow inner strength and discipline, and persevere during adverse circumstances? Especially in the context of sports, this must be considered an advantage. With obesity levels at an all-time high, shouldn’t we welcome any factors that increase people’s interest in physical activity? It is true that survivorship bias can be a key source of motivation. Nevertheless, a number of dangerous consequences for people’s decision-making must not be underestimated. They could neglect reasons for failure, take big risks, and not know when to give up. As a passionate hobby yogi, who follows many famous yoga teachers and athletes on social media, I am all too aware of the risks associated with survivorship bias. Sure, I’d love to have an online yoga channel with millions of followers. I’d also like to master amazing, one-handed arm balances. But it’s important to stay realistic. Keeping a sense of perspective is essential for benefiting from the positive motivational aspects of having role models, while managing the dangers associated with more serious forms of survivorship bias. 32. What do the figures in paragraph 1 suggest? A. Football is a very popular sport in the UK. B. Being a professional player is a long shot. C. It takes sweat and determination to do well in sports. D. It’s harder to become a basketball player in the US than in the UK. 33. Which is the author’s understanding of survivorship bias? A. It usually happens in the area of professional sports. B. People are more likely to succeed by following role models. C. Losing sight of the overall statistics may result in blind admiration. D. Some fortunate winners make people overvalue their chances of success. 34. What’s paragraph 3 mainly about? A. The advantages and disadvantages of survivorship bias. B. Why survivorship bias comes into being. C. The ways survivorship bias develops. D. Who survivorship bias benefits. 35. How can we beat survivorship bias according to the author? A. By practising yoga regularly. B. By motivating ourselves continuously. C. By avoiding people favouring survivorship bias. D. By being a realist and learning from role models wisely. I run a lot of writing workshops in secondary schools and what I often see is this: teenagers in class just look at the blank page and freeze. Even when I assure them they can’t get it wrong in creative writing, they still pause and feel painful, looking to me for clear and definite instructions. This behavior results from their training to mimic (模仿). ___36___ In time, they are terrified of getting things wrong and risking failure. Creativity is no longer advocated and is even viewed as a soft skill, or even a weakness. However, creativity is highly valued by employers. According to The Conversation, creativity has been the number-one skill demanded by 20 million job ads on LinkedIn for two years in a row. ___37___ Due to limited educational resources and assessment pressures, teenagers’ thinking becomes increasingly narrow, leaving them afraid to explore other possibilities. ___38___ It’s just an ability to make new connections and follow where they go. Actually, creativity requires qualities available to us all: courage, observation, curiosity, flexibility and perseverance. So how do we help teenagers be hopeful and brave? Firstly, we need to avoid the idea that their entire futures depend on this very assignment or that decision. ___39___ There is no right way to live a life. Secondly, let’s encourage inquiry. Children are naturally curious, but this curiosity often fades as they grow older, although it still exists within them. Just because they lack answers doesn’t mean they shouldn’t ask questions; rather, they should ask even more. ___40___ Young people need reminding that their stories haven’t been written. They need opportunities to try new things. They need permission to keep asking “what else is possible?” because anything is. A. But in schools, it is different. B. Being creative isn’t a magical skill. C. It allows us to understand their feelings better. D. They know it is a safe way to get good grades. E. The main problem is how to keep those creative juices flowing. F. Life is long enough to try many things, and to change directions. G. The universe is held together with unanswered questions and endless possibilities. For the past 18 years, my daughter has been around me all the time. Up to that point, I had always been the quiet type, more comfortable expressing myself through writing rather than speaking. My essays received high praise for their clarity and style, and it was my written work that caught Mr Thompson’s attention. “You have a knack for structuring arguments in your essays,” he told me one afternoon as I was leaving class. “I believe you can bring those skills into a debate setting. Why not give it a try?” Despite his encouraging words, the idea of speaking publicly was challenging. I had always avoided any form of public presentation, troubled by a fear of stumbling over words and facing the judgmental stares of an audience. However, Mr Thompson did not give up easily. He assured me that the debate club was a supportive environment where I could grow at my own pace. Unwillingly, I agreed to attend a few sessions. The first few meetings were as challenging as I had feared. I struggled to find my voice, my arguments sounded weaker when spoken than they did on paper. Each session ended with me vowing never to return. As time passed from weeks to months, I noticed a shift in my approach. The weekly debate topics forced me to engage with a wide array of subjects, from environmental policy to technological ethics, pushing me to not only form opinions but also express them confidently in front of an audience. The club members, some of whom were experienced debaters, provided constructive feedback. A significant turning point came during one of our inter-school competitions. _____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ As the school year ended and the final debate approached, I was no longer the reluctant participant but one of the club’s most enthusiastic members. _____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 高考模拟•英语 (120分钟 150分) 考生须知: 1. 6. We have found that the contents in these books are much more challenging than those in the previous textbooks, making it difficult for us to grasp the material. Could you explore different teaching methods that might help us better understand these contents? Perhaps providing some supplementary materials could be beneficial. Thank you very much for your attention. One possible version: A significant turning point came during one of our inter-school competitions. It was held at a large auditorium filled with students and faculty from various schools. As my turn approached, the familiar nerves threatened to overwhelm me. However, as I stepped onto the stage, all the practice and encouragement from Mr Thompson and my peers seemed to turn into a moment of clarity. I delivered my arguments with a newfound belief, responding to counterpoints with a calmness I had never felt before. The applause that followed was not just for my performance but for the barriers I had overcome. As the school year ended and the final debate approached, I was no longer the reluctant participant but one of the club’s most enthusiastic members. The topic was complex, involving the ethical implications of artificial intelligence in modern warfare — a subject requiring deep understanding and sharp wit. I engaged vigorously, with my points well-received by the judges and audience alike. When the results were announced and our team was declared the winner, a sense of achievement washed over me. I not only contributed significantly to our victory but also came to value the art of debate.
