A
April 27 brings Independent Bookstore Day, the biggest bookstore celebration of the year when bookstores around the country host events and offer discounts. Here’s a selection of bookstores we love writing about.
Books on Main
Books on Main feels like you’re reading inside a tree-house in a Wisconsin forest. It opened in June 2023. Local residents have a welcoming place decorated with wood leaves and comfortable furniture to gather and discover new and beloved books.
Off the Beaten Path Bookstore
First opened more than 30 years ago, Off the Beaten Path has been through three sets of owners and three locations. Current owners Mike and Danielle Skov say one thing has never changed: The promise to be a welcoming and inclusive (包容的) space. They partner with local schools, libraries and nonprofits to reach as much of the community as possible.
Changing Hands Bookstore
Too popular to be called a hidden gem (宝石), this Arizona jewel recently celebrated its 50th anniversary. It first opened in a 500-square-foot space in 1974. It hosts author events, poetry discussion groups and offers a Trade Counter where customers can bring in gently used books for store credit.
The Last Chapter Book Shop
The Last Chapter is an all-romance bookstore in Chicago that opened in 2023. The store hosts author events along with community mixers like Blind Date with a Book, where you wrap one of your favorite books and “trade” it with a fellow book fan in hopes of finding a new favorite and a new friend.
1. Why Off the Beaten Path Bookstore is different from other bookstores?
A. It collects gently used books B. It creates a welcoming atmosphere.
C. It works with local schools. D. It remains in the same place.
2. Which bookstore has the longest history?
A. The Last Chapter Book Shop. B. Books on Main.
C. Off the Beaten Path Bookstore. D. Changing Hands Bookstore.
3. What can people do at Blind Date with a Book?
A. Buy their favorite books. B. Exchange books with book-lovers.
C. Receive wrapped gifts. D. Communicate with authors.
B
Everyone has their own way to “recharge” their sense of well-being — something that makes them feel good physically, emotionally, and spiritually even if they aren’t consciously aware of it. Personally, I know that few things can improve my day as quickly as a walk around the block or even just getting up from my desk and doing some push-ups. A hike through the woods is ideal when I can make it happen. But that’s me. It’s not simply that I enjoy these activities but also that they make me feel better and clear my mind.
Mental health and physical health are closely connected. No kidding — what’s good for the body is often good for the mind. Knowing that what you can do physically has this effect for you will change your day and your life.
Physical activity has many mental health benefits. These have been published in the journal Physical Activity Guidelines for Americans and include improved brain health and cognitive function — the ability to think, if you will, a reduced risk of tension and worry, improved sleep and overall quality of life. Although not a cure for all, increasing physical activity directly contributes to improved mental health and better overall health and well-being.
Learning how to manage stress and getting screened for depression are simply good prevention practices in daily life. Awareness is especially important at this time of year, when disruptions to healthy habits and choices can be more likely and more annoying.
Shorter days and colder temperatures have a way of breaking up the normal life — as do the holidays, with both their joys and their stresses. When the rich sunshine and clear skies of temperate(温和的) months give way to terrible weather, less daylight, and festive gatherings, it may happen unconsciously or seem natural to be less physically active. However, that tendency is just why it’s so important that we are ever more mindful of our physical and emotional health and how we can maintain both at this time of year.
4. What is the author’s regular way of “recharging” his well-being?
A. Working out in a gym. B. Staying and doing nothing.
C. Hiking in the woods. D. Slight exercise.
5. What can we learn from paragraph 3?
A. The importance of good sleep.
B. The ways to improve brain health.
C. The mental health benefits of physical activity.
D. The bond between mental health and physical health.
6. What does the underlined word “disruption” in paragraph 4 probably mean?
A. Achievement. B. Destruction. C. Advantage. D. Development.
7. Why does the author mention shorter days, colder temperatures and festivals?
A. To persuade us to enjoy our current lives. B. To show useful advice on keeping healthy.
C. To describe unexpected things in our lives. D. To remind us to care about well-being anytime.
C
Last month, I was sorting through an old box when I came across a time capsule, in purple and green floss (丝线). Faded and worn, it was a friendship bracelet (手链) — an important part of my teenage summers. Holding it in my hand made me think about those precious memories of childhood, which my kids will never know firsthand.
My handiwork wasn’t beautiful. But what I remember is the beauty of the offering: slipping something into a friend’s hand and knowing it would always be with them. The experience was intoxicating — like the serious business of exchanging wedding rings, it was a symbol of an unbreakable bond. Those bracelets represented how much we meant to each other, at a time when our friends were becoming the center of our lives.
I slept with my bracelets and showered with them. I wore them all summer long at camp. And I acquired new bracelets from friends there — friends who received carefully crafted bracelets from me in return, as we said our tearful end-of-summer goodbyes. I thought having them helped ease the pain of leaving my friends. But now I see that they were really helping me to leave behind childhood.
My kids don’t go to summer camp. They certainly don’t exchange anything as uncool as bracelets with their friends. They hang out on Discord in chats that only pause but never end. Our eldest son endlessly texts on his cellphone as he and his friends make one another talking emojis and TikTok videos.
Their relationships with their phones leave no time or space for writing letters or making bracelets, and their gifts to one another leave no clear and definite traces. There will be no boxes of letters to sort years from now nor any hidden bracelets to find. They will have little to physically hold on to.
8. Why does the author associate a bracelet with a time capsule?
A. It is faded and worn. B. It was made by the author herself.
C. It reminds her of her childhood. D. It is shaped like a capsule.
9. What does the underlined word “intoxicating” mean in Paragraph 2?
A. Professional. B. Temporary. C. Exciting. D. Strange.
10. Why does the author think her kids’ childhood is different from hers?
A. They make more friends at summer camp.
B. They spend too much time on their cellphones.
C. They are unwilling to give bracelets to parents.
D. They often send hand-made gifts to their friends.
11. What can be inferred about the friendship bracelets?
A. They proved the author’s kids had much to physically hold onto.
B. They represented both the author and her kids’ unforgettable childhood.
C. They recalled the author’s deep sorrow of leaving close friends at summer camp.
D. They gave meaning to the author’s childhood in a way her kids will never know.
D
In recent years, there has been a significant shift towards adopting eco-friendly practices and promoting sustainable lifestyles. This global trend is fueled by various factors, ranging from heightened environmental awareness to economic advantages.
A primary driver behind the rise of green living is the increasing awareness of environmental issues, particularly the urgent need to address climate change. As people become more informed about the harmful effects of carbon emissions, deforestation, and pollution, there is a collective push toward adopting practices that minimize ecological impact.
Beyond environmental concerns, there are some economic motives driving the shift toward sustainability. For instance, energy-efficient technologies and practices can significantly reduce utility bills over time, making them financially advantageous for homeowners and businesses alike. Additionally, governments and organizations often offer some financial stimuli such as tax credits and subsidies (补贴) to encourage the development and adoption of renewable energy sources.
For example, solar energy has emerged as a frontrunner in the renewable energy sector, attracting widespread interest from homeowners and businesses seeking clean energy solutions. Solar panels use sunlight to generate electricity, offering a sustainable alternative to traditional fossil fuels. The declining costs of solar technology, coupled with advancements in efficiency and storage capabilities, have made solar panels increasingly practical and cost-effective.
Consumer attitudes and preferences are also factors driving the demand for sustainable products and services. Millennials (千禧一代) and Generation Z, in particular, prioritize environmental responsibility and prefer to support businesses that demonstrate a commitment to sustainability. This shift has urged businesses across various sectors to integrate eco-friendly practices into their operations, from sustainable sourcing to waste reduction initiatives.
Moreover, the power of social influence cannot be underestimated in shaping consumer behavior towards sustainability. Social media platforms and online communities arouse awareness about environmental issues and show innovative green solutions. Individuals are increasingly motivated by peer examples, fostering a collective movement towards greener lifestyles.
These living practices reflects a global commitment to sustainability. By choosing to integrate sustainable practices and technologies into everyday life, individuals and communities can contribute to lessening climate change and creating a healthier planet for future generations.
12. What is the result when the government offers financial stimuli according to the text?
A. Green energy will be more accessible and affordable.
B. It will bring too much financial burden to the government.
C. Technology companies will make much progress in their field.
D. Traditional fossil fuels will give way to renewable energy entirely.
13. What is true about the consumer behavior according to paragraphs 5 and 6?
A. Older generations have a more sustainable lifestyle.
B. Peers make little difference in shaping consumer behavior.
C. Social influence promises to drive changes in consumer preferences.
D. The eco-friendly practices of companies cause the shift of consumer behavior.
14. What is the purpose of the text?
A. To initiate a process. B. To list some reasons.
C. To address concerns. ` D. To analyze a dilemma.
15. What is the suitable title of the text?
A. Keeping Sustainable Development: The Strategic Goals for the Globe.
B. Protecting the Environment: An Everlasting Topic throughout the World.
C. Promoting Ourselves: A Better and More Advanced World in Store for Us.
D Embracing Green Living: The Growing Movement towards Sustainability.

根据第一段“Faded and worn, it was a friendship bracelet (手链) — an important part of my teenage summers. Holding it in my hand made me think about those precious memories of childhood, which my kids will never know firsthand.(褪色且磨损了,这是一个友谊手链——我十几岁夏天的重要组成部分。把它拿在手里让我想起了那些珍贵的童年记忆,而我的孩子们永远无法亲身体验这些记忆)”可知,作者把手镯和时间胶囊联系在一起是因为这使她想起了她的童年。故选C。
【9题详解】
词句猜测题。根据第二段中划线词前文“My handiwork wasn’t beautiful. But what I remember is the beauty of the offering: slipping something into a friend’s hand and knowing it would always be with them.(我的手工作品并不美丽。
根据倒数第二段“They certainly don’t exchange anything as uncool as bracelets with their friends. They hang out on Discord in chats that only pause but never end. Our eldest son endlessly texts on his cellphone as he and his friends make one another talking emojis and TikTok videos.(他们当然不会和朋友交换像手链这样不酷的东西。他们在Discord上聊天,只会暂停,但永远不会结束。我们的大儿子没完没了地在手机上发短信,他和他的朋友们互相制作会说话的表情符号和TikTok视频)”可知,作者认为她的孩子的童年和她的不同因为他们花太多时间在手机上。故选B。
【11题详解】
推理判断题。根据最后一段“Their relationships with their phones leave no time or space for writing letters or making bracelets, and their gifts to one another leave no clear and definite traces. There will be no boxes of letters to sort years from now nor any hidden bracelets to find. They will have little to physically hold on to.(他们与手机的关系使他们没有时间和空间写信或制作手链,他们彼此的礼物也没有留下清晰明确的痕迹。从现在起,多年以后,不再有一箱箱的信件需要分类,也不会有隐藏的手链需要寻找。他们将没有什么可以依靠的东西)”可知,手链使作者想起了美妙的童年生活,而这种感受当今的孩子们是无法体会的,因为他们大多数沉浸在虚拟世界。友谊手链以一种她的孩子们永远不会知道的方式赋予了作者的童年意义。故选D。

In recent years, there has been a significant shift towards adopting eco-friendly practices and promoting sustainable lifestyles. This global trend is fueled by various factors, ranging from heightened environmental awareness to economic advantages.
A primary driver behind the rise of green living is the increasing awareness of environmental issues particularly the urgent need to address climate change.

分析句子可知,此处为非限制性定语从句,先行词为前面的整个句子“On the global scale, China has put more effort than any other country”,在从句中充当主语,所以应用关系代词which引导。故填which。

故填to。

After reading your message at the “Soul Station”, where you expressed your confusion about high school, I wanted to share with you the importance of setting learning goals.
Setting goals can provide clarity and direction to your studies, helping you stay focused and motivated. Make sure they’re specific and realistic, such as aiming to improve a subject score by a certain amount. By breaking these goals into smaller, achievable tasks and celebrating your progress, you’ll create a sense of achievement and determination.
Remember, high school is a marathon, not a sprint. Keep pushing forward with your goals, and don’t hesitate to reach out if you need help. I’m here for you. Stay positive, and you’ll find your way through this journey.
Yours,
Li Hua
