B Like a lot of people, I started running to lose weight. That was in 2004 when I was in college, battling the 40-plus pounds I’d gained from my diet of pasta, fries and sweets. It took me over five years to lose weight, but I never was able to get super slim like I had always wanted to be. As a mother, I have gone through two pregnancies (怀孕) , gaining 50-plus pounds during each, and always ran to lose weight. Even running 45 minutes three to four times a week didn’t help me lose those last 10 pounds. Running an hour five times a week and doing long training runs on the weekend just made me super hungry, and I ended up gaining weight. I gradually gave up running. I wasn’t excited to do it anymore because it wasn’t offering the results I thought it should have. I decided to make a change and sign up for a month-long program for CrossFit. I started going there five days a week. After one month of CrossFit, I was shocked at how my body had changed. In the first month I was there, I never repeated the same exercise. Before trying CrossFit, I put in a lot of miles running, but my heart rate never got as high as it does doing five minutes of wall balls, box jumps and burpees. It has been three months since I started CrossFit. I love my new exercise routine because I’m actually excited to go when my alarm goes off at 4: 40 am. It’s fun to try a new exercise routine. I am proud to see what I can achieve and how strong I’m getting, and I also look forward to sweating alongside the same devoted (投入的) , supportive, and inspiring group of people in the morning. 4. What can we infer from Paragraph 1? A. The author had a sweet tooth. B. The author led a relaxing life. C. The author succeeded in losing weight. D. The author was a strong-minded woman. 5. What was the result of the author running many times a week? A. She was tired every day. B. She lost those last 10 pounds. C. She stayed fit and healthy. D. She was putting on weight. 6. What does the underlined word “burpees” in Paragraph 3 refer to? A. A running routine. B. A kind of exercise. C. An interesting destination. D. A kind of hobby. 7. How did the author feel about CrossFit? A. Helpful B. Difficult C. Cheap D. Boring C Buying furniture (家具) is easier than ever. You can even order a new table and chairs online without ever leaving home. But did you ever think about how furniture is made? The process begins with trees but now researchers have found a better way: growing it in a lab instead of a forest. Instead of cutting down trees and adding to deforestation (砍伐森林), Velasquez-Garcia said, “If you want a table, then you should just grow a table. ” The research group found a way to actually grow plant tissue (组织) — wood and fiber — in a lab that is similar to the way cultured meat is grown. While there is still a long way to actually grow a table, the team was able to grow structures from cells from zinnia leaves. Making furniture and other items from biomaterials (生物材料) could eliminate cutting down trees in forests. “The way we get these materials hasn't changed in centuries and is very inefficient (效率低的) ,” said Velasquez-Garcia. “This is a real chance to avoid all that inefficiency. ” There are other benefits to using lab wood too. Lab grown wood can be handled to take on any shape — like 3D printing — so it may be possible to build a table without glue or screwing parts together. Beckwith, a mechanical engineering PhD student, was inspired by a visit to a farm to try to make land-use more efficient and environmentally sound. “That got me thinking: Can we be more strategic about what we're getting out of our process? Can we get more outputs for our inputs?” she told MIT News. “I wanted to find a more efficient way to use land and resources so that we could let more farmlands remain wild, or to remain lower production but allow for greater biodiversity (生物多样性).” Today, the two largest uses of trees are to make wood products and paper. When new biomaterials become easily available, forests will lose their economic value and will be protected for their environmental, health, and recreational value. These researchers, like Velasquez-Garcia, are speaking for the trees. 8. What does the author think of growing furniture? A. It turns out to be convenient. B. It’ll be money-saving. C. It’s as important as making furniture. D. It might have a bright future. 9. What does the underlined word “eliminate” in Paragraph 3 mean? A. Improve. B. Explore. C. Remove. D. Help. 10 What is the purpose of Beckwith's growing furniture? A. To make more money. B. To keep biodiversity. C. To increase production. D. To use wild resources. 11 What's the key to protecting forests? A. Wide use of new biomaterials. B. Less use of wood products and paper. C. Making effective forest laws. D. Caring more for the environment. D Scientists in China have developed a small, flexible device (设备) that can change heat from human skin into electrical power. In their research, the team showed that the device could power an LED light when worn around a wrist (手腕) . The findings suggest that body temperature could someday power wearable electronics. The new device is a thermoelectric generator (TEG) (温差发电器) that uses temperature difference between the warmer body and the cooler environment to produce power. Researchers have designed a self-powered electronic system. First, they connect an LED to a TEG. Then, they wrap the TEG around the wrist of someone. With a temperature difference, the generator harvests heat given off from the skin and successfully lights up the LED. Unlike traditional generators, thermoelectric generators don’t use the energy of movement to produce power. They can be widely used in various fields to supply energy. In addition, thermoelectric generators don’t depend on rare metals, which can lower the costs of production. Zhang Qian, one of the leading scientists, and her colleague have been working on designing thermoelectric generators for years. With wearable devices becoming increasingly popular in recent years, the team wanted to explore whether these generators could replace traditional batteries (电池) in devices like fitness trackers and smart watches. There’s an increasing demand for greener energy, and TEGs fit right in, for they can turn wasted heat into power in many conditions — as long as there’s a temperature difference. “Our production will have good performance if it’s introduced to the market,” says Zhang Qian. Looking forward, the team plans to further improve the design so the device can absorb heat more efficiently. 12. What does paragraph 2 mainly tell us? A. The working process of a TEG. B. The creation of wearable devices. C. The environment’s effect on human skin. D. The difference between a TEG and an LED. 13. What are the main features of TEGs? A. Flexible and time-saving. B. Efficient but high-cost. C. Convenient and eco-friendly. D. Creative but energy-consuming. 14. What’s the author’s attitude towards TEG? A. Anxious. B. Supportive. C. Unclear. D. Doubtful. 15. What can be the best title for the text? A. Green Energy Is Becoming More and More Popular B. Traditional Generators Turn Wasted Heat into Useful Power C. TEG: New Device Using Body Movement to Produce Power D. Generator Gets Heat Given off by Skin to Power Wearable Devices With the development of the tourist industry, traveling has become a fashionable way for people to spend their holiday. Cheap D. Boring 【答案】4. D 5. D 6. B 7. 根据第一段的“It took me over five years to lose weight, but I never was able to get super slim like I had always wanted to be.(我花了五年多的时间才减肥,但我从来没有像我一直想的那样变得超级苗条)”可知,作者用五年的时间坚持减肥,由此可推知,她是一个意志坚强的女人。 根据第二段的“Even running 45 minutes three to four times a week didn’t help me lose those last 10 pounds. Running an hour five times a week and doing long training runs on the weekend just made me super hungry, and I ended up gaining weight.(即使每周跑三次或四次,每次45分钟,也没有帮助我减掉最后10磅。每周跑五次,每次一小时,周末还进行长时间训练,这只会让我非常饿,结果我反而增重了)”可知,作者每周多次跑步的结果是她体重增加了。故选D。 【6题详解】 词句猜测题。根据划线单词前面的“Before trying CrossFit, I put in a lot of miles running, but my heart rate never got as high as it does doing five minutes of wall balls, box jumps and burpees.(在尝试混合健身之前,我跑了很多英里,但我的心率从来没有做五分钟的墙球、箱子跳跃和burpees时那么高。)” 根据最后一段中“It’s fun to try a new exercise routine. I am proud to see what I can achieve and how strong I’m getting, and I also look forward to sweating alongside the same devoted (投入的) , supportive, and inspiring group of people in the morning.(尝试一种新的锻炼方式很有趣。我很自豪能看到自己能取得什么成就,变得多么强大,我也期待着在早上与同样投入、支持和激励的一群人一起流汗)”可推知,作者觉得CrossFit对她很有帮助。故选A。 C Buying furniture (家具) is easier than ever. A. Improve. B. Explore. C. Remove. D. Help. 10. What is the purpose of Beckwith's growing furniture? A. To make more money. B. To keep biodiversity. C. To increase production. D. To use wild resources. 11. What's the key to protecting forests? A. Wide use of new biomaterials. B. Less use of wood products and paper. C. Making effective forest laws. D. Caring more for the environment. D 9. C 10. B 11. 根据第一段中“The process begins with trees but now researchers have found a better way: growing it in a lab instead of a forest. Instead of cutting down trees and adding to deforestation (砍伐森林) , Velasquez-Garcia said, “If you want a table, then you should just grow a table. ”(这个过程从树木开始,但现在研究人员发现了一种更好的方法:在实验室而不是森林中种植。Velasquez-Garcia说:“如果你想要一张桌子,那么你应该种一张桌子,而不是砍伐树木和增加森林砍伐。”)”可推知,作者认为种植家具更环保,是更好的选择,所以可能会有一个光明的未来。故选D项。 【9题详解】 词句猜测题。根据第一段中“Instead of cutting down trees and adding to deforestation (砍伐森林) , Velasquez-Garcia said, “If you want a table, then you should just grow a table.”(Velasquez-Garcia说:“如果你想要一张桌子,那么你应该种一张桌子,而不是砍伐树木和增加森林砍伐。”)”以及划线单词句中“Making furniture and other items from biomaterials (生物材料) could…cutting down trees in forests.( 用生物材料制造家具和其他物品可以……砍伐森林中的树木。)”由此可知,此处为避免砍伐森林中的树木。故可猜测划线单词eliminate为“消除,避免”的意思,和C选项Remove“移除,去除”意思相近。故选C项。 【10题详解】 细节理解题。根据第五段中““I wanted to find a more efficient way to use land and resources so that we could let more farmlands remain wild, or to remain lower production but allow for greater biodiversity (生物多样性) .”(“我想找到一种更有效的方式来利用土地和资源,这样我们就可以让更多的农田保持野生状态,或者保持低产量,但允许更大的生物多样性。”)” 根据最后一段中“When new biomaterials become easily available, forests will lose their economic value and will be protected for their environmental, health, and recreational value.(当新的生物材料变得容易获得时,森林将失去其经济价值,并将因其环境、健康和娱乐价值而受到保护。)” 故选A项。 D Scientists in China have developed a small, flexible device (设备) that can change heat from human skin into electrical power. Generator Gets Heat Given off by Skin to Power Wearable Devices 【答案】12. A 13. C 14. B 15.
