Many years ago, my dad was facing a serious heart condition. He was unable to do a steady job. He fell suddenly ill and had to be admitted to the hospital.
He wanted to do something to keep himself busy, so he decided to volunteer at the local children’s hospital. My dad loved kids. It was the perfect job for him. He ended up working with the seriously ill children. He would talk, play, and do arts with them.
One of his kids was a girl with a rare disease that paralyzed (瘫痪) her from the neck down. She couldn’t do anything, and she was very depressed. My dad decided to try to help her. He started visiting her in her room, bringing paints, brushes and paper. He stood the paper up, put the paintbrush in his mouth and began to paint. He didn’t use his hands at all. All the while he would tell her, “See, you can do anything you set your mind to.”At the end of the day, she began to paint using her mouth, and she and my dad became friends. Soon after, the little girl was sent home because the doctors felt there was nothing else they could do for her. My dad also left the children’s hospital for a little while because he became ill. Some time later after my dad had recovered and returned to work, in came the little girl who had been paralyzed and only this time she was walking. She ran straight over to my dad and hugged him really tight. She gave him a picture she had done using her hands. At the bottom it read: “Thank you for helping me walk.”
My dad would cry every time he told us this story and so would we. He would say sometimes love is more powerful than doctor, and my dad—who died just a few months after the little girl gave the picture—loved every single child in that hospital.
4. The author’s father worked at the local hospital to_______________.
A. make his serious heart condition less serious B. keep himself occupied and pleased
C. realize his childhood dream D. earn money to pay for treatment
5. How did the author’s father help the paralyzed little girl?
A. He helped her practice walking. B. He visited her and made a toy for her.
C. He showed her she could still do things. D. He painted special pictures for her.
6. According to Paragraph 3, the paralyzed girl _______________.
A. eventually became a unique painter
B. was sent home and never seen again
C. gradually recovered and walked
D. sent the author’s dad a picture painted with her mouth
7. What message does the passage mainly convey?
A. It’s better to give than to receive.
B A sick person should not focus on his disease.
C. Volunteering is a worthwhile thing to do.
D. Love can sometimes bring great results.

By now, most people know they should be eating more vegetables. But are there ways to get more from the vegetables you already eat? A research shows that when it comes to vegetables, it’s not only how much we eat, but also how we prepare them, that decides the vitamins and other nutrients that enter our body.
Many studies show that people who eat lots of vegetables have less heart disease, and eye problems and even cancer. But raw vegetables are not always best. The researchers found that 198 Germans who eat raw food were short of lycopene, the matter found in tomatoes and other red vegetables. “There is an idea that raw foods are always going to be better,” says Steven K. Clinton, a professor at Ohi o State University. “For fruits and vegetables, sometimes a little bit of cooking can be helpful.”
A number of factors decide how the vegetables do good to people’s health before they reach the table, including where and how they were grown and stored before being bought. No single cooking way is best. Some nutrients are easily lost in cooking if they are cooked in different ways.
Vitamins C and B are often lost. In January, another report said that boiling was better for carrots than frying or serving them raw. Frying was the worst way to cook.
What cooked with the vegetables can also be important? When the vegetables were cooked with fat, the diners can get more nutrients. Fat can also make the taste of vegetables better, meaning that people will eat more of them. Putting on some other things that make it taste better—a little salt—can make the food taste better.
8. The writer mainly wants to tell us that ________.
A. people should eat more vegetables
B. the way people eat vegetables is important
C. eating vegetables is good for us
D. how much vegetables one should eat
9. The people who eat the raw vegetables for a long time will ________.
A. have the eyes problems B. have heart disease
C. be in need of lycopene D. hate eating tomatoes
10. The following decide how the vegetables do good to people EXCEPT ________.
A. the place where the vegetables are grown
B. the way how the vegetables are stored
C. the way how the vegetables are prepared
D. the price at which the vegetable are sold
11. From the last paragraph, we can know ________.
A. It’s better to cook vegetables with fat
B. the more fat in the cooking, the fewer vegetables people will eat
C. It’s better to cook the vegetables without salt
D. the fat will increase the nutrition of the vegetables
D
Last Saturday, when my grandfather got frustrated at the name of the singer of a song, I grabbed my smartphone and found it in seconds. This astonished my grandfather, who didn’t understand how I’d checked the information so quickly. I laughed and explained, but afterwards, it made me think about how much I depend on technology.
When I reflected on its impact on my education, I saw that technology has been significant in many ways. Returning to the story of my grandfather, he had asked me more about how I used it and about university life. He said he thought we had an easy life compared to previous generations. I could see his point.
Not only are we lucky enough to have the same educational benefits as those of previous generations, but we have so many more. We still have walk-in libraries; however, the only option for studying used to be sitting in these libraries with as many books from your reading list as you could find, yet now a single search online can immediately provide access to a huge range of resources. Interaction between students and university staff is another area that has changed considerably. We can have face-to-face time with our tutors, and also communicate using our electronic devices. The most popular means is via social media, and it has become unacceptable for messages to be unanswered for any length of time. While this puts an extra stress on the university’s academic support team, we students are greatly benefited.
When we compare the student life of the past and the present, it is tempting to focus on the obvious differences in technology. In fact, students are doing what they’ve always done: embracing the resources available and adapting them to work more efficiently and to live more enjoyably. The pace of change in technology continuously gathers speed, so we have to value each innovation as it happens.
12. Why does the author mention the story of his grandfather?
A. To share an interesting experience. B. To draw readers’ attention to the topic.
C. To provide an example for his opinion. D. To arouse readers’ concern about a problem.
13. What is the grandfather’s attitude towards the role of technology?
A. Favourable. B. Tolerant. C. Doubtful. D. Unclear.
14. What is a new challenge technology brings to the academic support team?
A. Using various electronic devices. B. Scheduling online communication.
C. Providing more flexible reading lists. D. Responding to all inquiries from students.
15. What can be concluded from the last paragraph?
A. Students should make full use of technology.
B. Students should value the time and enjoy their life.
C. We should take technological differences seriously.
D. We should resist the temptation of up-coming innovation.

【答案】12. B 13. A 14. D 15. A

First, you shouldn’t be too sad about it, which is a common phenomenon for the students who begin to study English. Meanwhile you can communicate more with your teachers and friends who may have such experience to help you out. Besides, it is good to get close to nature to do some exercises to relax yourself.
