Sometimes I began to imagine: what if I were neighbors with all of my friends? The more I’ve thought about it, the more I believe: we should all live close to our friends.
For the past century, the nuclear family, only including parents and children, has defined U.S. homes. But Americans lived with friends and extended family long before the nuclear family became common. Even now, this mode of living exists somewhere; think of college campuses, which tend to be the kind of walkable communities where you’re regularly running into pals on the street.
While moving closer to friends would likely require a lot of efforts, doing so could actually be really good for you. Having supportive friends is connected with greater day-to-day happiness. Researchers have found that happiness spreads easily, especially among those who live close together. Friends living within a mile of each other are 25 percent more likely to feel happy, and their friends have a 10 percent chance of feeling happier too. Live around people who make you happy, and you might create a happiness circle that cheers up everyone around you.
Having a pal around is also just practical. For people with kids, a friend in the neighborhood might be able to help with child care in times of need, saving you the cost of a last-minute babysitter. Those without children might welcome the chance to bond with friends’ kids. And for people who live alone, living closer to friends can make savings on some things easier. You might share household items you don’t need every day, for example. Whatever the reason, having more people you trust around will make it easier for you to get through difficult times.
Many people are prepared to move for a new job, to be with a romantic partner, or even just for an adventure. Moving to be closer to friends should be no different. Friends are important to a good life. So why not shorten the distance between you and them?
24. Which was popular in the US before the nuclear family became common?
A. The one-parent family.
B. The extended family only.
C. The college campus community.
D. The family group with relatives and friends.
25. What do the percentages in Para. 3 show about living closer to friends?
A. It spreads happiness among friends easily.
B. It benefits one’s physical and mental health.
C. It improves one’s awareness of family building.
D. It increases one’s chances of making more new friends.
26. What is the practical advantage of living near friends?
A. Greater personal growth. B. Lower living costs.
C. More health care services. D. Better leisure activities.
27. What is the author's purpose in writing the passage?
A. To advise living in nuclear families.
B. To call on maintaining good friendships.
C. To encourage people to live close to friends.
D. To tell people how to turn friends into neighbors.

Do you love seeing beautiful lanterns outside? The best time to do this is during the Lantern Festival, which falls on the 15th day of the first lunar (阴历) month. This year it is on Feb22, marking the end of Spring Festival celebrations.
Lanterns are a big part of the festival. One story says that the bright lanterns show respect for gods. Another says that people light lanterns to celebrate the declining (消退的) darkness of winter.
Watching lanterns is a great event. You see lanterns in any sizes and shapes you can imagine, from animals to plants and flowers. To make this activity more fun, people paste (粘贴) riddles (谜语) on the lanterns. “Ten plus ten, still is ten, ten minus ten, again is ten.” Guess what? It is a pair of gloves.
In some places, people like releasing sky lanterns, which are called Kongming lanterns. A sky lantern is a small hot air balloon made of paper, with an opening at the bottom, where there is a small fire source. When the bright lights fly high in the sky, people bless family members and make wishes. Releasing river lights is also a way to bless for each other. Usually, the lights are in the shape of a lotus (荷花).
In old times the Lantern Festival was also romantic. At that time, young girls were not allowed to go out very often except during certain festivals. Therefore, looking at lanterns gave young people a chance to meet each other. A line from Xin Qiji, a poet during the Song Dynasty, shows this: “Anxiously, I searched for her in thousands, hundreds of ways. Suddenly I turned, and there she was in the declining light.”
28. When do people celebrate the Lantern Festival?
A. On the 22nd day of the first lunar month.

B. Young girls were not allowed to go out on the day.
C. People light lanterns to drive animals away.
D. People make wishes when releasing lights.
30. How do you feel about the line from Xin Qiji?
A. Sad. B. Scared. C. Romantic. D. Anxious.
31. What would be the best title for the text?

C. Celebrations of the Lantern Festival
D. A day to Guess Lantern Riddles

On an ordinary fossil-hunting (化石搜寻) outing, the members of the Hamilton Junior Naturalist Club might expect to find a few interesting shells (壳). But on a 2006 trip to Kawhia Harbour in New Zealand’s North Island, the students discovered the bones of a fossilized huge penguin (企鹅).
“We were expecting to find common fossils — shells, but were hugely shocked to find a huge animal skeleton (骨架) just lying on the beach,” said Mike Safey, president of the club.“Our club’s fossil expert Chris Templer realised immediately that we had discovered something hugely important. We made the decision to rescue this fossil, otherwise it would have been completely destroyed by weather.”
Researchers from Massey University used 3D scanning to compare the fossils to digitalized bones from all over the world. The penguin fossil is between 27.3 and 34.6 million years old, according to Daniel Thomas, a senior lecturer in Massey’s School of Natural andComputational Sciences. It is similar to Kairuku penguins but with longer legs. Researchers named it “Kairuku waewaeroa” for this characteristic.
Around 1.4 meters tall, this penguin was much huger compared to living penguins. We know that body size can be an important factor when thinking about ecology. How and why did penguins become huge, and why aren’t there any huge penguins left? Well-preserved fossils like Kairuku waewaeroa can help us answer these questions.
“The discovery is important for researchers, and it was also rewarding for the students who found it and encourages other young people to go out in nature and make their own discoveries. It reminds us that ancient New Zealand had many kinds of birds, and emphasizes how important New Zealand is for bird diversity today,” Thomas says.
32. Where is this text probably taken from?
A. A science magazine. B. A health lecture.
C. A storybook. D. An advertisement.
33. What surprised the Hamilton Junior Naturalist Club?
A. An interesting shell. B. A huge penguin.
C. A huge penguin fossil. D. A new kind of penguin.
34 What may Thomas agree with?
A. Ancient New Zealand had various birds.
B Teenagers should go out to find fossils.
C. Researchers should scan the bird carefully.
D New Zealand has a number of huge penguins.
35. Which of the following is the best title for the text?
A. New Zealand’s birds are in danger today
B. New Zealand is suitable for penguins to live in
C. School kids should go out for discoveries
D. The fossil of a huge penguin was found in New Zealand

When Paula was fifteen, she found out something that surprised her a lot: She was adopted (收养的). This news was like a sudden lightning in the sky, showing her a new path she had never thought about before. It made her very curious about her real family and where she came from.
At first, the idea of being adopted was very hard for Paula to understand, like trying to climb a big mountain all by herself. But it also made her want to learn more about who she was. Each step she took was like going on a new adventure, sometimes making her feel scared but also excited. She was looking for her family’s stories, and her wish to find her roots (根) was like a bright flashlight, helping her see the way.
Paula decided to take a DNA test, which felt like using a special key to open a secret door to her family’s past. When the test showed that she was connected to a distant cousin, it made her very happy, like finding a treasure on a treasure hunt. But when there were no more clues (线索) to follow, Paula felt very sad, as if a big cloud had covered the sun and made everything dark. She felt like crying because she didn’t know what to do next.
But even when things looked bad, Paula didn't give up. She became stronger and more determined, like a superhero who keeps going even when it's hard. She thought that if she kept trying, she would find the answers she wanted.
Paula had a best friend named Heather, and they had a very strong friendship, like two trees that grow close together and support each other. They had been friends for a long time and had shared many happy and difficult moments. As they grew older, people noticed that they looked a lot alike and sometimes joked that they could be sisters. They always laughed at this, but they didn’t know that there might be some truth in what people were saying.

In old times, the Lantern Festival was also romantic. At that time, young girls were not allowed to go out very often except during certain festivals. Therefore, looking at lanterns gave young people a chance to meet each other.

B. Teenagers should go out to find fossils.
C. Researchers should scan the bird carefully.
D. New Zealand has a number of huge penguins.
35. Which of the following is the best title for the text?
