1.(23-24八年级上·广东深圳·期末)
Arctic foxes live on the land and sea ice within the Arctic Circle (北极圈). Winter in the Arctic is quite different. From October to February, the sun never rises to shine warmth and light.
Luckily, these small foxes have a wonderful ability to live in the icy Arctic. Their thick fur coat and long, furry tails keep the body warm. Their feet also have thick fur like built-in snow boots. This makes their prey (猎物) harder to hear their footsteps. And their white coats make it difficult for predators such as wolves, polar bears and golden eagles to find them among the ice and snow.
When it’s not trying to keep warm or avoid predators, an Arctic fox is on the hunt for food. They prefer to eat small lemmings, but when times are difficult they’ll eat whatever they can find: insects, berries, and even the droppings of other animals. Sometimes an arctic fox will follow a polar bear on a hunting trip and eat the bear’s leftovers.
If a fox can’t find food, or if the weather gets really bad, it can dig a den (兽穴), it can slow down its heart rate and metabolism (新陈代谢). This helps the animal save energy so it doesn’t have to eat as much.
Once the animal comes out of its den, it’ll try to hunt again. With food in its belly, the Arctic fox has a better chance of making it through another long, dark water.
1.What is the weather mostly like in winter in the Arctic? ________

4.(23-24八年级上·广东深圳·期末)Robots and humans can work together as a team, but this brings both good and bad for teamwork. Sometimes, people depend too much on their teammates, whether they are humans or robots. A recent study shows that working with robots can make people’s motivation (动力) and effort go down.
In the study, the researchers created a pretend task where two groups of participants had to check circuit boards (电路板) for mistakes. The first group were told that a robot named Panda had already checked the circuit boards before they checked. They could see and hear the robot when they worked.
At first, it seemed like Panda’s presence didn’t make a difference. Both groups spent the same amount of time checking the boards and found a similar number of mistakes. However, when the researchers looked more closely at the mistakes, they noticed that the first group found fewer mistakes later on. This could mean that they depended too much on the robot and didn’t pay as much attention. They believed that Panda wouldn’t miss any mistakes.
The researchers warned that this could be a safety problem. In their study, they found that participants found out fewer mistakes when they worked with the robot. In longer work shifts, especially when tasks are repetitive (重复乏味的) and there isn’t much supervision (监管), the loss of motivation could be even worse. This could bring dangerous results to work, especially in jobs where double-checking is important for safety.
To understand the problem better, the researchers suggested doing studies in real workplaces with skilled workers who often work with robots. This would give us a clearer picture of how motivation is changed in real-life situations.
1.What is the main purpose (目的) of Paragraph 1?
A.To introduce the topic. B.To give some explanation.
C.To share some ideas. D.To provide some solutions.
2.According to Paragraph 2 and 3, what can we infer from the study?
A.Panda helped checked each circuit board.
B.The first group checked carefully at first.
C.The second group also worked with Panda.
D.Participants relied too much on Panda.
3.Why did the researchers think the result of the study could be a safety problem?
A.The workers don’t have good enough skills.
B.The work is exciting but lacks supervision.
C.Robots might take human’s place in the future.
D.People might lose motivation to do double-checking.
4.What does the underlined “this” probably refer to?
A.Working with robots as a team. B.Doing studies about robots.
C.Depending too much on robots. D.Checking many circuit boards.
5.What would the author probably talk about in the following paragraphs?
A.What to do to be less dependent. B.What to do to improve motivation.
C.How to do studies in real workplace. D.How to make robots much smarter.

Have you ever seen chipmunks (花栗鼠)? They look very much like squirrels (松鼠), but they spend much of their time on the ground. People name this animal chipmunk because they make the special chip-chip sound. There are as many as 25 kinds of chipmunks, and most live in North America. A wild chipmunk can live for 2 to 5 years.
Chipmunks are very small, and they enjoy living alone. When they are two months old, they leave their mothers to live by themselves. They build their own homes and start collecting food there all by themselves. They do not like living or making friends with other chipmunks much.
Unlike other hibernating (冬眠的) animals, chipmunks do not live on body fats during winters. They collect and keep food during summers and eat it during winters. In winter, they don’t sleep all the way through the winter. They are light sleepers and wake up every few days to eat food.
Chipmunks may not be as popular as pet dogs or pet cats, but they can be good ones. They can feed on many things from vegetables and fruits to nuts (坚果) and bird eggs. They sleep at night, so you don’t have to look after them during night time. But you have to remember one thing—chipmunks have trust problems, so it takes time for them to become close to you.
1.What can we learn about the chipmunks from the first paragraph?
A.Some of their relatives. B.Their living place.
C.How they live in the wild. D.Their number in the wild.
2.How old are chipmunks when they begin to live alone?

C.What chipmunks eat during winters. D.Why chipmunks are special animals.
4.If you want to have a pet chipmunk, you have to _______.
A.buy it lots of food B.look after it at night
C.give it time to trust you D.keep it away from your dog
5.Where can we read the text?

How do you communicate with your family and friends? A lot of people choose to use Mandarin (普通话) over dialects (方言) in daily lives these days. As a result, some local dialects are in danger of disappearing. To save them, the Chinese government started the Chinese Language Resources Protection Project a few years ago.
This project looks at how people talk in 1,712 places. Their languages include 103 dialects that are almost gone. It has helped China to build the largest language resource library in the world. There’s an online library where people can learn dialects from over 5.6 million audio clips (音频) and over 5 million videos.
Scholar Zhang Hongming talked about his worries. “For about over 10 years, in the Wu dialect areas such as Shanghai and Suzhou, children aged 6 to 15 can understand but hardly speak the dialect. Meanwhile, young people above 15 years old sometimes speak it, but not very well. If this keeps happening, the dialect might disappear,” he said.
So how did China make this big library? A big national effort has been put into the project to make it happen. Over five years, more than 4,500 experts and more than 6,000 dialect speakers joined in. The project is now entering into its second part. This includes creating tools like apps and mobile dictionaries to help people learn dialects.
Language protection matters to all of us. For ordinary people, posting audio clips and videos of dialects can also help keep them alive.
1.Why was the Chinese Language Resources Protection Project started?
A.To keep dialects from disappearing. B.To provide people with more choices.
C.To encourage more people to use Mandarin. D.To help people communicate with each other.
2.Which of the following is included in the library?
A.103 popular dialects. B.More than 5 million videos.
C.Offline libraries in 1,712 places. D.Less than 5.6 million audio clips.
3.What does Zhang Hongming think of the future of the Wu dialect?
A.Bright. B.Hopeful. C.Unsure. D.Worrying.
4.What does “it” refer to in Paragraph 4?
A.The library. B.The project. C.The effort. D.The tool.
5.What is the best title of this passage?

We produce a lot of rubbish at home, at schools and in parks every day. Where does all this rubbish go? Scientists have made an up-side-down pyramid of the different ways to deal with (处理) rubbish. The worst ways are at the bottom and the best ways are at the top.
In cities, you seldom see rubbish in open areas because people usually collect rubbish and send it to landfills. A landfill is a huge hole that can hold rubbish. In some landfills, waste is treated(被处理) to make it less harmful before it is put underground. Once a landfill is full, people cover it with soil safely. A park or playground can then be built on top of it.
Another way to deal with rubbish is to burn it. This produces energy but also harmful gases. In some places, these gases are cleaned before they are let off.
In the middle of the pyramid is recycling. This means using rubbish to make new products. Used glass bottles, for example, can be remade into new glass products. People break up waste paper and mix it with water to make new paper.
Reusing is another effective way to deal with rubbish. This means using “waste” in another way. Buying and selling second-hand things online is a good example.
Waste prevention is at the top of the pyramid. It means not producing rubbish in the first place. For example, say no to throwaway plastic cups at the very beginning. Choose glass instead! You can use it over and over again.
1.Where does rubbish go if people send it to landfills?
A.At home. B.At schools. C.In open areas. D.Under the ground.

Over the last year, 30 students between the ages of 21 and 25 from the Netherlands took a year off from university to work on developing a solar-powered car. The car is called Stella Terra.
In order to create a car that could deal with the kind of tough driving the team was planning for, the students had to design the car from top to bottom.
On top, of course, were the solar panels (嵌板). Most solar panels are only about 20% efficient (有效的). That means they waste about 80% of the sunlight they get. But the Stella Terra’s solar panels are 97% efficient.
Like most electric cars, Stella Terra stores energy in a battery. Thanks to its powerful solar panels and its battery, when it’s sunny, the car can run for 440 miles a day. Stella Terra can carry two people, and has a top speed of 90 mph. The car weighs just 2,600 pounds. That’s about two-thirds the weight of a common car.
On the bottom, the team designed a system to help the car deal with heavy shaking that comes when driving over rough (粗糙的) surfaces.
The team recently took the car on its biggest test—a challenging 620-mile test drive across Morocco. The car had to travel through forests as well as dry riverbeds. It had to drive across desert sand and up mountain roads. The car succeeded in doing all of this.

15.(23-24八年级上·广东深圳·期末)A new font (字体) designed by an Internet company could make your writing more polite and hopefully reduce cyberbullying (减少网络暴力) .
Polite Type, developed by TietoEVRY, changes harmful language with nicer words. For example, if you type “You are ugly”, it will be changed into “You are not traditionally beautiful.” “We want bullies (欺凌者) to rethink the words they use and the actual meaning behind them,” said company manager Kia Haring.
The problem of cyberbullying has been around since the Internet was invented. Nearly everyone who has used the Internet has experienced it.
Polite Type is a good step in the right direction. But how do we really find ways to stop cyberbullying?
For one, we can choose to be “invisible”. That is, to surf the Internet without making any personal information or leaving any messages.
We can also choose to pay no attention to bullies. However, this isn’t perfect either, as it can be hard to forget people who are especially cruel. A better way is to block and report. If you block someone on social media, they won’t see or send messages to you. Most websites have rules against harmful language. If you report a bully to the website, they will often stop that person from using it. It’s best to take direct action like this.
1.Why does TietoEVRY develop Polite Type according to Kia Haring?
A.To learn about more serious problems on the Internet.
B.To make the bullies think the words they use again.
C.To ask more young people to work for TietoEVRY.
D.To protect every user’s personnal information online.
2.What can we know about cyberbullying?
A.Polite Type has nothing to do with cyberbullying.
B.Cyberbullying brings us happiness on the Internet.
C.Cyberbullying has become more serious than before.
D.Nearly every Internet user experienced cyberbullying.
3.What does the underlined word “invisible” mean in Chinese?
A.隐形的 B.小心的 C.认真的 D.公开的
4.What is the main idea of the last two paragraphs?

16.(23-24八年级上·广东深圳·期末)Feel down? Hug a tree! Recently, many Chinese young people have turned to trees to help feel less nervous. Although it sounds strange, there’s a science behind the act of tree-hugging.
In 1984, US scientist Edward Wilson pointed out that humans are born to love being around other living things. Human’s love for nature is “in our DNA”. This idea helps to explain why people prefer natural, green views to city views. It’s also one of the reasons why people love cute pets.
Some scientists have studied why tree-hugging can help with our health. A study in 2021 reported that the activity can create more oxytocin (催产素) . It’s something connected with feelings. The higher the level of oxytocin is, the happier you may be. Hugging trees for only 21 seconds can produce oxytocin in bodies.
Hugging trees also helps cut cortisol (皮质醇) production, which makes us feel better. Cortisol is a marker of stress. The brain produces more cortisol when the person is worried, angry, or very sad.
Although the activity is helpful to us, it’s important to keep in mind that we shouldn’t hurt the nature while hugging trees. Trees often hold valuable environment. Many small living things live on the tree—and they are too small to be seen. You may want to be gentle when hugging trees—just like how you hug a friend!
1.Why did many Chinese young people hug trees?

17.(23-24八年级上·广东深圳·期末)Most of us probably live without vegetables, but a world without chocolate? Now that would be hard! According to chocolate makers it could happen if we don’t act soon.
There are two main causes of the chocolate shortage—chocolate’s growing popularity and less production of cocoa, the plant from which chocolate is made. With more and more people in India and China loving chocolate, not much can be done about the first cause.
Therefore, the only thing we can do is to increase cocoa production. However, new plant diseases and little rain in Ivory Coast and Ghana, the world’s largest producers, have reduced cocoa production by 40 percent in the past 10 years. What’s worse, many cocoa farmers in Africa and other cocoa-producing countries like Indonesia and Venezuela are changing to easier-to-grow crops such as corn or rubber. This way, the farmers can make more money.
To prevent more farmers from changing, researchers at the newly opened International Cocoa Control Centre, in the UK, are trying to create new cocoa plants that are stronger and faster growing. But first they must make sure the new plants are safe to grow. This takes a long time.
First, each new plant is stored at the Control Centre for six months to make sure it is healthy. It is then planted in the Centre’s fields, studied and tested for another two years. Only after scientists are certain that they’re disease-free, will the plants be sent to farmers in West Africa or wherever else they are needed.
To create new stronger types of cocoa, scientists at the Centre are combining the best parts from different cocoa plants. Though the world is facing a serious chocolate shortage, there is now hope!

A.Cold and dark. B.Warm and bright. C.Cold and bright. D.Warm and dark.

3.What does the underlined word “avoid” in paragraph 3 probably mean? ________
A.Get close to. B.Run after. C.Keep away from. D.Depend on.
4.What can we learn from the passage? ________
A.Arctic foxes only live on insects. B.Arctic foxes are dangerous animals.
C.Arctic foxes can stay alive in winter. D.Arctic foxes keep food in their dens.
5.What is the structure of the passage? ________
A. B. C. D.
2.(23-24八年级上·广东深圳·期末)Great painters all have their own styles. As soon as we see their paintings, we know who the painter is. Brazilian artist Milton Omena thought about these styles. Then he designed logos (标识) for the world’s most famous painters.

8.(23-24八年级上·广东深圳·期末)These days, students often have a lot of worries. Sometimes they have problems with their schoolwork, and sometimes with their friends. Worries usually cause (导致) health problems. What can they do with worries?
Some people believe the worst thing is to do nothing. Laura Mills, a teenager from London, agrees. “I think talking to someone helps a lot. Unless we talk to someone, we’ll certainly feel worse.” Laura once lost her wallet, and worried for days. She was afraid to tell her parents about it. She even walked three miles to school each day because she didn’t have any money. But in the end, she talked to her parents and they were really understanding. “I will always remember to share my problems in the future!” Laura says.
Liu Ming, a student from Shenzhen, feels the same way as Laura. “It is best not to run away from our problems. We should always try to solve them.” He thinks the first step is to find someone you trust to talk to. Students often forget that their parents have more experience, and their parents are always there to help them.

Do you know mosquitoes (蚊子)? They live almost all over the world. The number of mosquitoes isn’t high if a city has many cold days and nights. But if the city has a lot of rain and the weather is warm, there are a lot of mosquitoes. Well, when the weather gets about 32℃, they will become less active. When the air is dry and windy, it is also hard for them to live.
Even the Arctic (北极地区) has a large number of mosquitoes. During summer, the temperature of some places there can be over 30℃. It is comfortable for mosquitoes to live there. Also, mosquitoes have few enemies (敌人) in the Arctic. They can grow bigger than those in other places.
▲ That is Iceland. The weather there is quite hard for mosquitoes to live. Usually, the adult mosquitoes lay eggs (产卵) in water or near it. If the weather is hot enough, the baby mosquitoes will become adult mosquitoes soon. However, the weather is cool even in summer in Iceland. And because the weather changes a lot, the eggs of mosquitoes can’t grow up.

A.To help relax themselves. B.To do a study on nature.
C.To play with their friends. D.To protect the environment.
