At 18, I competed in my first marathon in Dublin, Ireland. At that time, I was an excellent 400-meter runner at high school, but got it into my head that I should try the longer distance to prove that I was really good at running — and what better than the marathon.
Back then, the running craze hadn’t quite heated up to the point it has today and running a marathon was unknown to most people. Besides, I never knew anyone who had actually run a marathon.
On the way from England to Dublin, I was wondering what I was getting myself in two days later when the race would begin. I tried to get some sleep to ease my nerves, but I found it hard.
The race day was somewhat cloudy, but the warmth of the people forced away the clouds. My limited memories from that first race remain: the feeling of running through a tunnel (隧道) of people as the crowds lined beside the streets; the cheers from the crowds as the news came that an Irishman had won the race; what’s important, the unbelievable kindness of the crowds cheering me on as I hit the wall and tried to struggle through. Eventually, I didn’t get the prize, but I never gave up and regarded it as a success because I challenged myself.
After my first marathon, I started a website based on my love for running. Whether you’re an experienced marathoner or just an interested passer-by, I invite you to participate in the website and make it your home. Runners and particularly marathoners seem to share common ideals. They’re part of a global team and a global community.

New bio-plastics are being made in laboratories from straw, wood chips and food waste, with researchers aiming to replace oil as the source of the world’s plastic.
The new approaches include genetically modifying bacteria to eat wood and produce useful chemicals. But the bio-plastics are currently significantly more expensive to make than fossil fuel-based plastics.
Land and seas around the world, from high mountains to deep oceans, have become polluted with plastic, prompting major public concern. The world has produced 8bn tons of plastic since the 1950s and demand is still rising.
While some waste plastic is recycled, much of it is burnt to produce electricity, resulting in carbon emissions that drive climate change. In contrast to plastic made from oil, plastics made from plant-based materials only release the carbon the plants absorbed from the air as they grew. Bio-plastics will also give more options for products that biodegrade (生物降解) in the environment, although they can be made very long-lasting if required.
“Plastics are an incredible enhancement to our daily lives,” said Paul Mines, CEO of Biome Technologies in the UK, which has spent t5m in the last five years on bio-plastics research. “But we can’t go on using fossil fuel-based materials. About 6-7% of every barrel (桶) of oil is used to make plastics.”
“Using plant materials is feasible,” said professor Simon, at the University of York. “Replacing half of the nation’s plastic bottles could be done using just 3% of the sugar beet crop, 5% of wheat straw or 2.5% of food waste,” he said.
Currently, just a few thousand tons of bio-plastic are used in the UK each year, compared to millions of tons of conventional plastic. Mines said this could rise to about 20,000 tons in the next five years.
28. Why are high mountains and deep oceans mentioned in Paragraph 3?
A. To display the range of plastic pollution. B. To show the widespread use of plastic.
C. To present a reason of wide use of plastic. D. To stress the increasing demand for plastic.
29. What is one advantage of bio-plastics over fossil fuel-based plastics?
A. Producing electricity. B. Being eco-friendly.
C. Driving climate change. D. Biodegrading other plastic.
30. What does the underlined word “feasible” mean in Paragraph 6?
A. Possible. B. Troublesome. C. Original. D. Costly.
31. What is the main idea of the passage?
A. Plastics arc necessary in daily life. B. Oil is the source of the world’s plastic.
C. Bioplastic making is a promising industry. D. Scientists are researching bioplastic making.
【答案】28. A 29. B 30. A 31. D

European researchers say they have created a process (制作法) that can produce oxygen (氧气) from moon dust (尘埃) . The process could provide oxygen for humans taking part in moon exploration activities in the future. Researchers from the European Space Agency, or ESA, carried out the experiments at a lab in the Netherlands.
The team says ESA’s experimental “plant” was able to successfully produce oxygen from simulated (模拟的) moon dust. The dust is part of a material known as regolith, a top layer of dirt and rock pieces that sit on the surface of the moon. Samples of regolith returned from the moon have proved that the material contains about 45 percent oxygen by weight. However, the oxygen is chemically locked in the form of minerals or glass, so it is not easy to use. Having real samples of regolith from the moon made it possible for the researchers to create the simulated moon dust material used during testing.
The oxygen extraction (提取) process is carried out using a method called molten salt electrolysis (熔盐电解). This includes first placing the regolith in a metal container. Calcium chloride (氯化钙) salt is added to the mixture, which is then heated to 950 degrees Celsius. Next, an electrical current is passed through the material. The researchers say it is this step that results in oxygen being extracted from the regolith. The study reported that up to 96 percent of oxygen in the simulated moon dust was extracted during the experiments.
ESA’s long- term goal is to design an oxygen- producing “pilot plant” to operate full- time on the moon. Beth Lomax, a lead researcher on the project, said, “Being able to get oxygen from resources found on the moon would obviously be hugely useful for future moon settlers, both for breathing and the local production of rocket fuel.” The researchers reported that “as an unexpected discovery”, the process also results in the production of usable metallic materials.
ESA and the US space agency NASA are both working on plans to return human beings to the moon. NASA has set a goal for 2034 with the aim of keeping humans on the moon for long periods.
32. Why is oxygen from moon dust difficult to use?
A. It is impossible for human beings to get moon dust.
B. It is chemically fixed in the form of minerals or glass.
C. The conditions of moon dust are terrible.
D. There exists only a little of it.
33. What is the main idea of the third paragraph?
A. What molten salt electrolysis is.
B. Where the value of the study lies.
C. How oxygen is extracted from moon dust.
D. What is necessary in the oxygen extraction process.
34. What is Beth Lomax’s attitude to the possibility of getting oxygen from moon dust?
A. Positive. B. Doubtful. C. Fearful. D. Uninterested.
35. Which of the following can be the best title for the text?
A. Recent Studies of Moon Dust by Researchers.
B. How Researchers Extracted Oxygen from Moon Dust.
C. Potential Importance of Oxygen Extracted from Moon Dust.
D. Researchers Report Extracting Oxygen from Moon Dust Successfully.
【答案】32. B 33. C 34. A 35. D

When I was in middle school, I became blind. Suddenly thrown into a world of darkness. I was troubled by frustration and self-pity. Depression consumed me and I was frightened to try anything challenging.
Imagine my surprise when my teacher asked me to enter a speaking contest. I rejected it out of hand. Among so many students, why did she pick me? I was an average student. blind and plain-looking. Anyhow. she insisted that I go for it. Her reply:“Because I believe you can deliver a good speech. You are more capable than you imagine!” Encouraged by her words,1agreed to give it a shot
I decided on a fictional mole (鼹鼠) as my topic. It was a cute creature with poor eyesight mostly living underground, digging holes and helping get rid of pests. Not a brilliant idea, but unique; and undoubtedly a relatable tale.
What did the mole think, as he fought his way in the darkness? Would he get scared? Have second thoughts? Want to quit? It struck a chord immediately. I got exhausted from preparing the speech. I had doubts about my choice. I wanted to escape from reality. But, like the blind mole. I kept it up. I doubled my efforts. I checked out books from the school library. I referred to some great speeches. I turned to my father for guidance.
A week before the competition, I presented my speech to my teacher. She smiled, saying “Good. Now, polish your writing and practice your delivery.” I couldn’t remember how many times I made adjustments to my writing. Nor could I recall how I practiced it over and over again, with mixed feelings. “Could my message get across to the audience?” “How would they react?” Tons of questions crowded into my mind.
注意:1.续写词数应为150个左右:
2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。

【答案】 The big day finally arrived. Guided to the stage, I was left alone to begin my speech. Fear slowly crept upon me and my voice was choking with horror. Feeling dizzy, I took a deep breath as I struggled to wrap up my presentation. Gradually, I picked up confidence and delivered the speech smoothly. Blind as I was, I managed to interact with my audience with proper gestures and tones, whose applause lingered around the hall. “Your story is well-organized, creative and inspiring,” a judge commented.
I went up to my teacher after the award ceremony. At the sight of me, she exclaimed in delight, “Congratulations! You are amazing!” Overwhelmed with excitement, I threw myself into her arms. “Thank you! Without your encouragement, I…” Joy chocked my words, and tears of joy flooded my eyes. “You are more capable than you imagine!” she added. From then on, I was convinced that I could overcome the darkness and enjoy a glorious life, as long as I tried my best.

24. Why did the author take part in his first marathon?
A. To show his talent for running.
B. To win a prize in a longer distance race.
C. To attract the public’s attention to running.

25. What impressed the author deeply during his first marathon?
A. He hit the wall and tried to struggle through.
B. He ran through a tunnel with other racers.
C. He nearly got lost due to the cloudy weather.
D. He received lots of encouragement from the crowds.
26. What can we know about the author’s website?
A. It aims to help unite running lovers.
B. It has attracted large numbers of participants.
C. It attaches great importance to community spirit.
D. It was set up mainly for experienced marathoners.
27. Which of the following is a suitable title for the text?
A. A Good Marathon Runner B. My Unforgettable First Marathon
C. Starting a Website for Runners D. Being Brave to Challenge Ourselves

What did the mole think as he fought his way in the darkness?
