We sorted through the current and upcoming releases to find 4 titles you should watch out for this fall. Dive in! Fiction A Sunny Place for Shady People by Mariana Enriquez, translated by Megan McDowell (Sept. 17). Enriquez has made a name for herself mixing supernatural horrors (ghosts, haunted houses, witches, that sort of thing) with the concrete horrors of everyday life in Argentina. Her last novel was a nearly 600-page work, but this newest one is a collection of short stories — like a pillowcase full of trick-or-treat candies. The Great When by Alan Moore (Oct. 1). The legendary comic book writer returns with his first novel since 2016’s Jerusalem. This new one takes place in postwar London, following a young bookshop employee named Dennis who finds a copy of a book from a different, more fantastical London. The City and Its Uncertain Walls by Haruki Murakami, translated by Philip Gabriel (Nov. 19). The latest novel from Japanese writer Haruki Murakami comes out in English this fall. It’s his first in six years, taking place in a fantastical kingdom where people read dreams and shadows can be free from their source. In classic Murakami fashion, the book touches on themes of loss, loneliness, and isolation. Nonfiction Sonny Boy: A Memoir by Al Pacino (Oct. 15). It was Pacino’s mom that first used the nickname Sonny Boy. It comes from an Al Jolson song she used to sing to him. The book digs deep into old memories like this one, detailing his childhood in the South Bronx and how he fell in love with the craft of filmmaking. 1. Which of the following books is a collection of short stories rather than a novel? A. A Sunny Place for Shady People. B. The Great When. C. The City and Its Uncertain Walls. D. Sonny Boy: A Memoir. 2. Where is the novel The Great When set? A. In Jerusalem. B. In Argentina. C. In London. D. In Japan. 3. What is the main content of Al Pacino’s memoir? A. His early career in Hollywood. B. His experiences as a director. C. His relationship with his mother. D. His childhood memories and love for filmmaking. A 2. C 3. A Sunny Place for Shady People的描述中“Her last novel was a nearly 600-page work, but this newest one is a collection of short stories — like a pillowcase full of trick-or-treat candies.(她的上一部小说有近600页,但这部最新的小说是一部短篇小说集,就像一个装满了不给糖就捣蛋糖果的枕套)”可知,这本书是一系列短篇故事的集合,而不是长篇小说。故选A。 根据文章Fiction部分的第二段对The Great When的描述中“This new one takes place in postwar London, following a young bookshop employee named Dennis who finds a copy of a book from a different, more fantastical London.(这部新作的故事发生在战后的伦敦,一位名叫丹尼斯的年轻书店员工发现了一本来自另一个更奇幻的伦敦的书)”可知,这部小说的背景设定在伦敦。 根据文章最后一段对Sonny Boy的描述中“The book digs deep into old memories like this one, detailing his childhood in the South Bronx and how he fell in love with the craft of filmmaking.(这本书深入挖掘了像这样的旧记忆,详细讲述了他在南布朗克斯的童年以及他是如何爱上电影制作的)”可推知,Al Pacino的回忆录的主要内容是他的童年记忆和对电影制作的热爱。故选D。 B Three pages of notes, more than 50 allusions (典故), and about 30 rare characters in each paragraph... It’s hard to believe that the ancient Chinese-style prose (散文) piece Xiao Zhou Hou Fu (《小周后赋》) was written by a 17-year-old high school student. This talented young writer is Chen Qihang, who attends Hangzhou High School in Zhejiang. “I had a dream about the Nan Tang Dynasty emperor Li Yu and his wife Xiao Zhouhou. In the dream, they asked me to explain to the world how they are misunderstood. This inspired me to write the prose,” Chen said. The prose was first published in Hangzhou High School’s Literary Society magazine. It didn’t draw much attention until a history teacher of the school saw the article and posted it on his own social media account. Netizens rushed to comment and soon it became popular on social media. Some people praised how amazing it is for a young student to have such a deep understanding of the ancient Chinese world. Some, however, said they felt that Chen was just trying to show off his skills by making the prose extremely difficult to read. “I understand why some people said that,” Chen said. “Fu is a genre (体裁) that stresses language beauty and rhetoric (修辞) in the first place; also, when I was writing it, I was trying to see how many allusions I could use within one prose. You can say that this is a test for myself.” Chen also likes writing novels and poems. “The more Chinese literature I read and recite, the better I get at understanding the allusions, expressions and grammar,” Chen said. He also writes down sentences he likes as well as any inspiration he gains. Talking about why we should study ancient Chinese literature, which feels far from our daily lives, Chen mentioned that the true wisdom of Chinese culture is hidden in these old texts. “For anyone who wants to pass down the rich culture of our civilization, learning our history and knowing the road that led us here are key.” In response to netizens comments, Chen opened his own social media account to explain his ideas behind the prose. “I will use the account to spread ancient Chinese knowledge,” Chen said. 4. What inspired Chen Qihang to write the prose piece Xiao Zhou Hou Fu? A. A dream about Li Yu and his wife. B. The request of his history teacher. C. The desire to show his writing talent. D. The beauty of ancient Chinese literature. 5. How did Xiao Zhou Hou Fu gain widespread attention? A. It won a literary award. B. It was published on a popular magazine. C. It was shared by a history teacher on the Internet. D. Chen Qihang posted it on his social media account. 6. What do we know about Chen Qihang’s prose? A. Chen intended it to attract a wide audience. B Its difficulty aroused debate among readers. C. It was universally admired and accepted by everyone. D. Its original lack of attention revealed its poor quality. 7. Why does Chen Qihang recommend studying ancient Chinese literature? A. To become a famous writer. B. To impress his teachers and classmates. C. To create viral content on social media. D. To acquire the wisdom of Chinese culture. A 5. C 6. B 7. 根据文章第二段“I had a dream about the Nan Tang Dynasty emperor Li Yu and his wife Xiao Zhouhou. In the dream, they asked me to explain to the world how they are misunderstood. This inspired me to write the prose,(我梦见了南唐皇帝李煜和他的妻子小周后。在梦中,他们让我向世界解释他们是如何被误解的。这启发了我写散文,)”可知,是陈棨杭梦见李煜和他的妻子小周后这一梦境激发了他写这篇散文。故选A项。 根据文章第三段“The prose was first published in Hangzhou High School’s Literary Society magazine. It didn’t draw much attention until a history teacher of the school saw the article and posted it on his own social media account.(这篇散文首次发表在杭州中学的《文学社》杂志上。直到学校的一位历史老师看到这篇文章并将其发布在自己的社交媒体账户上,这篇文章才引起了人们的广泛关注。)”可知,是一位历史老师在网上分享这篇文章使《小周后赋》获得了广泛关注。故选C项。 【6题详解】 推理判断题。根据文章第四段“Some people praised how amazing it is for a young student to have such a deep understanding of the ancient Chinese world. Some, however, said they felt that Chen was just trying to show off his skills by making the prose extremely difficult to read.(有人称赞一个年轻的学生对中国古代世界有如此深刻的理解是多么了不起。然而,一些人表示,他们觉得陈只是想通过让散文变得极其难以阅读来炫耀自己的技巧。)”可知,关于陈棨杭的散文,我们知道其阅读难度在读者中引起了争议。故选B项。 【7题详解】 推理判断题。根据文章第五段“Talking about why we should study ancient Chinese literature, which feels far from our daily lives, Chen mentioned that the true wisdom of Chinese culture is hidden in these old texts. ‘For anyone who wants to pass down the rich culture of our civilization, learning our history and knowing the road that led us here are key.’(在谈到为什么我们应该研究远离日常生活的中国古代文学时,陈提到,中国文化的真正智慧隐藏在这些古老的文本中。‘对于任何想传承我们文明丰富文化的人来说,学习我们的历史,了解引领我们来到这里的道路是关键。’)”可知,陈棨杭推荐学习中国古代文学是为了获取中国文化的智慧。故选D项。 C Vacations are an important part of every person’s life. Following long seasons of hard work, it is great to get away from busy schedules and enjoy nature. The tourism industry is fully built around the need for vacations. While tourism is good, it has its dark side. The entire industry depends on nature, yet it tends to destroy what is left of natural resources. Tourism is one of the leading contributors to climate change. According to the U. N., tourism contributes up to 5% of all man-made emissions (排放), with the rate expected to increase to 5.3% by 2030. Besides emission-based pollution, tourism also contributes heavily to plastic pollution. According to the U. N., at least eight out of ten tourists throw away single-use plastic, of which eight million tonnes end up in the ocean each year. This kind of pollution can be reduced by sustainable (可持续的) vacationing. Sustainability can be achieved if we take steps to protect our natural resources. While vacationing allows us to enjoy the natural resources, the sustainable steps we take protect nature for future generations. The term ecotourism is often used interchangeably with sustainable tourism. While they are related, they are not the same thing. Sustainability tends to take a more comprehensive (全面的) approach to preserving nature, and social and cultural practices. Meanwhile, ecotourism mainly focuses on protecting nature. If we look at it comprehensively, both ecotourism and sustainable tourism are important principles (原则) to be embraced. There are some actions that can only be taken at policy (政策) development levels. However, there is a lot that can be done at a personal level. When it comes to ecotourism, your inspiration for others to take action is equally important. Unless you get your actions right, you may not be in a position to help others see the light. 8. Which of the following is not the harmful effect of tourism? A. Relying on nature. B. Causing plastic pollution. C. Leading to climate change. D. Damaging natural resources. 9. How does the author explain the term “ecotourism” in the text? A. By comparing it with sustainable tourism. B. By giving examples of ecotourism activities. C. By describing the harmful effect of ecotourism. D. By presenting historical development of ecotourism. 10. What does the underlined word “embraced” in the last paragraph mean? A. Forgotten. B. Accepted. C. Changed. D. Ignored. 11. What can we know from the text? A. Policy changes can solve the problems caused by tourism. B. Ecotourism and sustainable tourism are completely different. C. Each person can do a lot to support ecotourism and sustainable tourism. D. The rate tourism contributes to man-made emissions will probably increase by 5.3%. A 9. A 10. B 11. 由文章第一段中“The entire industry depends on nature, yet it tends to destroy what is left of natural resources. (整个行业依赖于自然,但它往往会破坏剩下的自然资源。)”可知,“依靠自然”并不是旅游业的有害影响,而是其存在的基础,破坏自然资源是有害影响。由文章第三段中“Besides emission-based pollution, tourism also contributes heavily to plastic pollution. (除了基于排放的污染,旅游业也造成重大塑料污染。)”可知,造成塑料污染是有害影响。由文章第二段中“Tourism is one of the leading contributors to climate change (旅游业是导致气候变化的主要因素之一。)” 故选A。 由文章第五段中“The term ecotourism is often used interchangeably with sustainable tourism. While they are related, they are not the same thing. (生态旅游这个词经常与可持续旅游交替使用。虽然它们是相关的,但它们不是同一件事。)”可知,作者通过比较生态旅游和可持续旅游来解释生态旅游的概念。故选A。 根据文章最后一段中“There are some actions that can only be taken at policy (政策) development levels. However, there is a lot that can be done at a personal level. When it comes to ecotourism, your inspiration for others to take action is equally important. Unless you get your actions right, you may not be in a position to help others see the light. (有些行动只能在政策制定层面采取。然而,在个人层面上有很多事情可以做。当涉及到生态旅游时,你对他人采取行动的激励同样重要。除非你的行为是正确的,否则你可能无法帮助别人看到光明。)”可知,作者认为在生态旅游方面,个人的行动和启发同样重要,因此可以推断出embraced在这里的意思是“被接受”,即生态旅游和可持续旅游是重要的原则,应该被接受和采纳。A. 由文章最后一段中“However, there is a lot that can be done at a personal level. When it comes to ecotourism, your inspiration for others to take action is equally important. (然而,在个人层面上有很多事情可以做。当涉及到生态旅游时,你对他人采取行动的激励同样重要。)”可知,每个人都可以在个人层面上为生态旅游和可持续旅游做出贡献。故选C。 D Stressed. Anxious. Tired. This is how many employees feel at work because of stressors like longer work hours and the need to do more with fewer resources. Such work stress has been shown to bring about anxiety and anger, and damage personal performance. Typically, there are two ways people try to deal with this stress. One is to simply power through — to focus on getting the stressful work done. The other common strategy is to back down — to temporarily (暂时地) disconnect from work and get away from the stressful environment. Unfortunately, both “pushing through” and “getting away” have potential (潜在的) risk. Researches have long believed that we humans have limits in dealing with heavy workloads, which restrict our ability to always go all out. Continuing to make great efforts while stressed will simply tax us and lead to tiredness and damaged performance. While putting off the work can provide temporary relief, it does not address the real problems that cause stress in the first place. When we return from a break, we are not only faced with the same problems, but we may also experience additional guilt and anxiety. So what else can employees do to weaken the ill effects of stress? Researchers suggest a third option: focusing on learning. It means gathering new information, picking up a new skill, or seeking out mental challenges. Researchers found learning equips us with new abilities to address or even prevent future stressors. Additionally, taking time to reflect on what we know and learn new things helps us develop a sense of achievement. Plus, learning also helps connect us to a purpose of growth and development. What specifically can you do to increase learning when faced with stress at work? First start from the inner heart. Practice viewing stressful work as challenges in your mind. It shifts your mindset and better prepares you to approach the task. Second, work and learn with others. Getting out and discussing a stressor with your peers and co-workers might have a deeper understanding. Third, shape learning activities as a new form of “work break” from your routine tasks at work. 12. According to paragraph 2, which of the following is the author in favor of? A. Our ability to power through can be limitless. B. The problems will disappear after we have a break. C Putting off the stressful work will relieve our anxiety. D. Forcing ourselves to work when we’re stressed does harm. 13. How many advantages of learning are mentioned in paragraph 3? A. One. B. Two. C. Three. D. Four. 14. What is the author’s purpose in writing the text? A. To inform the benefits of learning. B. To guide us what to do to prevent stress. C. To warn us stress has bad effects on humans. D. To recommend a new option to handle stress. 15. Which of the following is the best title for the text? A. More Breaks, Less Stress B. More Learning, Less Stress C. More Efforts, Better Performance D. More Learning, More Achievements 【答案】12. D 13. C 14. D 15. 根据第二段中的“Continuing to make great efforts while stressed will simply tax us and lead to tiredness and damaged performance.(继续在压力下努力只会消耗我们的精力,导致疲劳和表现受损)”可推知,作者认为强迫自己在压力下工作是有害的。 根据第三段中的“Researchers found learning equips us with new abilities to address or even prevent future stressors. Additionally, taking time to reflect on what we know and learn new things helps us develop a sense of achievement. Plus, learning also helps connect us to a purpose of growth and development.(研究发现,学习使我们具备新的能力来应对甚至预防未来的压力源。此外,花时间反思我们已知的知识并学习新事物有助于我们培养成就感。而且,学习还能帮助我们与成长和发展的目标建立联系)”可知,学习有三个优点:为我们提供应对或预防未来压力的新能力;帮助我们获得成就感;帮助我们与成长和发展的目标相联系。故选C。 【14题详解】 推理判断题。根据文章内容及最后一段“What specifically can you do to increase learning when faced with stress at work? First, start from the inner heart. Practice viewing stressful work as challenges in your mind. It shifts your mindset and better prepares you to approach the task. Second, work and learn with others. Getting out and discussing a stressor with your peers and co-workers might have a deeper understanding. Third, shape learning activities as a new form of “work break” from your routine tasks at work.(当你面对工作压力时,你能做些什么来提高学习效率呢? Want to keep good workers? Praise them America’s relationship with work has been weak lately. In surveys over the past couple of years, Gallup researchers have found only about a third of U. S. workers feel engaged with their jobs. It’s a concern for companies and the economy. ____16____ More recognition, more motivation Meaningful feedback changes how people feel about their work. Employees who received high-quality recognition on the job were 45% less likely to have left that job between 2022 and 2024. Imagine if you’re doing things at work that nobody sees and you feel like nobody cares about. ____17____ An antidote (良药) to loneliness and stress People feel less lonely when their contributions are praised. Recognition creates community and helps people feel connected to each other. ____18____ Those who said they felt recognized on the job reported lower levels of stress and burnout than those who said they were not recognized. ____19____ Andy Hernandez’s story proved this point. Initially working in car financing, he self-taught Excel to strengthen his skills at work. When he began sharing ideas using his newfound expertise, his managers recognized his efforts, motivating him to strive for even greater achievements. Younger people expect more appreciation Generational differences also play a role in the desire for feedback. Younger workers, who tend to have a looser relationship to their workplaces, have a higher expectation of appreciation. ____20____ More and more leaders reported their organizations value employee recognition. A. You can imagine how that would be discouraged. B. This is where the power of recognition comes in. C. Recognition can drive professional development. D. Recognition is also considered as a cure for stress. E. Encouragingly, company leaders are increasingly recognizing the value of praise. F. Consequently, they are more likely to stay with their employers. G. Fortunately, researchers have find a fairly simple solution: recognition. 16. G 17. A 18. D 19. C 20. Alexis shook her head sadly. Because Grandpa wasn’t here to help this year. “I’ll help you,” Brianna said. The girls mixed boiled potato chunks, mustard (芥末), mayonnaise (蛋黄酱), and a little salt and pepper in a bowl. But Alexis felt it didn’t taste right after she tried a bite of the salad. “What’s missing? Something spicy?” she whispered to herself. Grandpa loved spicy (辛辣的) things so much. Right! Maybe he put a jalapeno pepper (墨西哥辣椒) in it. Immediately, she cut up a bright green jalapeno and added it to the bowl. It was closer, but it still didn’t taste right. Soon, Dad knew the kids were making Grandpa’s famous potato salad. “We’re trying, but we’re missing some ingredients (配料). Should we look in a cookbook?” Alexis asked Dad for help. Dad told her that Grandpa was never one to follow a recipe (食谱). It was true. People loved Grandpa’s potato salad because it was one of a kind. Alexis remembered posing with Grandpa for a photo after they won last year. Photo! That gave her an idea. She hurried to the bookcase and found an old photo album. “Maybe we’ll find clues (线索) in here,” she was wild with joy, opening it. Lots of pictures showed Grandma and Grandpa cooking together. One showed Grandpa pretending to cut Grandma’ s turkey with a saw (锯). In another, Grandma was patting Grandpa’s face with flour, leaving white handprints all over. Dad laughed and told them Grandpa and Grandma loved to joke with each other, but he always called Grandma Honey. “Do you think he put honey in the potato salad?” Brianna asked. “It’s worth a try,” said Alexis. She stirred some honey into the bowl. But it still wasn’t quite right. Dad looked through the album, finding one photo showing Grandpa fishing. __________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ “Will you cut the onion, Dad?” Alexis asked. __________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 【答案】Para 1: Dad looked through the album, finding one photo showing Grandpa fishing. “Do you think he put fish in his potato salad?” Alexis joked, smiling. Brianna laughed out loud, “No way!” At the end of the album was the picture of Grandpa and Alexis holding the Golden Potato. It looked like Grandpa was crying. Dad recalled that Grandpa did say the potato salad brought tears to his eyes. “I know the final secret ingredient!” Alexis shouted. She ran to the cabinet and grabbed an onion. Para 2: “Will you cut the onion, Dad?” Alexis asked. “Of course, sweetheart,” Dad replied, expertly slicing the onion into thin rings. Grandpa always said onions were the soul of his potato salad. After Alexis added the onion, the family tasted the potato salad and smiled. With great hope, they took the salad to the contest. Alexis was thinking about Grandpa when the judges announced the winner. “Alexis, why are you crying?” Brianna asked. “Oh, just because of the onions,” Alexis replied, hugging the Golden Potato to her chest. 词汇激活 行为类 ①翻阅:look through/page through ②添加:add/stir in ③回忆:recall/remind 情绪类 ①兴奋的:wild with joy/elated ②充满希望的:with great hope/full of anticipation 【点睛】[高分句型1] “Do you think he put fish in his potato salad?” Alexis joked, smiling.(运用了现在分词短语作状语) [高分句型2] Dad recalled that Grandpa did say the potato salad brought tears to his eyes.(运用了that引导的宾语从句) 第1页/共1页 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 $$ 高一年级期中考试 英语 注意事项: 1. 1. B Three pages of notes, more than 50 allusions (典故), and about 30 rare characters in each paragraph... A It won a literary award. B. It was published on a popular magazine. C. It was shared by a history teacher on the Internet. D. Chen Qihang posted it on his social media account. 6. What do we know about Chen Qihang’s prose? A. Chen intended it to attract a wide audience. B. Its difficulty aroused debate among readers. C Vacations are an important part of every person’s life. D Stressed. Anxious. Tired. This is how many employees feel at work because of stressors like longer work hours and the need to do more with fewer resources. Such work stress has been shown to bring about anxiety and anger and damage personal performance. First, start from the inner heart. Practice viewing stressful work as challenges in your mind. It shifts your mindset and better prepares you to approach the task. Second, work and learn with others. Getting out and discussing a stressor with your peers and co-workers might have a deeper understanding. __________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 第1页/共1页 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 $$
