Please feel free to have some food or drinks before the tour, and you can buy some gifts from the store to your right during the tour. Then, take a look at your brochures, which show the map of the building and where all the exhibits are. There is also information about the history of this museum. Construction of the biggest and oldest room, Langston Gallery, began under Sir Charles Langston. This is where we will be spending the majority of our time. Unfortunately, he never got the chance to see the museum completed in his lifetime. Later, other people took over the project upon his death, and finished it ten years later in 1895. The museum you see today took shape in 1905, with the addition of a second floor. We will not be going there, since it contains the special collection. A
In my early teens, I was once given a film camera as a gift . On receiving it, I jumped on my bike, headed to Wimbledon Common and took photos, just for me: photos of trees and wildlife. I was out all day. On my way home I spotted a tree lit up by street lighting and tried to capture its beauty. Rushing home, I put the spent film in a special little envelope and sent it off to a photography store, desperate to see how it would come out. I took many photos then and loved the fact that when you processed your film you got back colour photos which froze the precious moments, gently encouraging the hobby and the payments for processing.
As I grew into adulthood, that simple, deep happiness gradually faded away. One weekend when I was busy answering the work calls, my eyes caught a box in the corner of the room. I suddenly felt a sense of sadness. The stress growing over these years had pushed the camera from beside my pillow to the box in the corner. I thought I needed a change.
I took out the camera and dusted it down. It was a great joy that it still worked. I bought new film and took the camera everywhere I went. Now it is always on hand to accompany me on journeys, to allow me time to myself. Even if the day is full and busy, I can seize some moments for myself to take photos, to observe the world around me.
The wall of my room now holds all my camera equipment on display, along with photos I've taken. To me, the room represents how I’ve found happiness: by reconnecting to the younger part of myself I laid aside, by allowing room in my life for pleasure to exist, and by creating an environment that allows opportunities for delight.
56. What did the author think of taking photos as a young boy?
A. Inspiring and practical. B. Tiring yet delightful.
C. Exciting and worthwhile. D. Difficult yet engaging.

We’ve all been there: lying in bed wide awake and desperately wondering how to get to dreamland. While having trouble drifting off to sleep isn’t unusual, it still can be frustrating. Fortunately sleep experts are gaining an increasingly strong understanding of what’s happening in the brain during the process.
Falling asleep is a big shift for your brain. This switch is governed in part by environmental cues, such as light or temperature. A hot summer night or a bright streetlamp beside the window can interfere (干扰).
The process of nodding off can also be affected by your emotions. “You need to feel both physically and psychologically safe to sleep,” says Roxanne Prichard, a neuroscientist at the University of St. Thomas, Minnesota. “If you are sleeping next to someone you don’t trust, if you’re worried that the newborn that you’re caring for might stop breathing, it’s going to be hard to fall asleep.”
One of the recommendations to address insomnia is getting out of bed and sitting somewhere quietly with dull light and just relaxing, doing something boring. You could use the time to read, listen to calming music, or do breathing exercises — anything that slows and comforts your body and mind. But avoid snacking, exercise and screens.
It’s also important to resist the urge to concentrate on your worries, especially in the middle of the night. Not only will those thoughts keep you awake, you also probably won’t make much progress on what’s keeping you up because your prefrontal cortex (前额叶皮质), a part of the brain that is good at planning and analysis, doesn’t function well for the poor blood supply at night.
Keep it in mind that even if your night’s rest is incomplete, avoid the urge to make up for it by sleeping in or napping the next day. “If you nap during the day, especially longer naps, then your brain gets few signals of sleep and will be less likely to fall asleep quickly at bedtime,” says Prichard. If losing sleep interferes with your ability to function during the day, which could indicate something physiological is at play, seeing a doctor would be necessary.
60. Which of the following is most likely to cause trouble in sleep?
A. A slow soft tune. B. A dull streetlamp.
C. A cool summer night. D. A two-day-old baby.
61. Why is it hard to make much progress on the concerns in the middle of the night?
A. The resistance may make people worried. B. The brain can’t plan and analyze problems.
C. The prefrontal cortex works less efficiently. D. The problems may keep people awake.
62. What’s Prichard’s attitude towards naps in the day for night’s incomplete rest?
A. Opposed. B. Ambiguous. C. Supportive. D. Neutral.
63. What’s the author’s purpose in writing this passage?
A. To highlight the negative effects of sleep loss.
B. To illustrate the process of falling asleep in the brain.
C. To explain the causes of poor sleep and offer solutions.
D. To discuss the importance of a good sleep environment.

C
July was the hottest month on record globally. High temperatures and serious wildfires have swept across the Northern Hemisphere. Oceanic heat waves are damaging the world’s third-largest coral reef off Florida. And as the levels of greenhouse gases continue to increase, it means many even hotter summers lie ahead.
Last week, the United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres coined a new term. The time of “global warming” has ended, he announced, and the time of “global boiling” has arrived.
But critics have strongly disagreed with the phrase. At one level, “global boiling” is clearly an overstatement, but “global warming” is now far too weak a description. Many climate scientists have pushed for the term “global heating” to be used in preference. Similarly, phrases such as “climate crisis” haven’t received enough attention. That’s because many of us still feel we haven’t seen this crisis with our own eyes.
But that is changing. In the past few years, extreme weather and relevant events have struck many countries. Australia’s Black Summer brought wildfires that burned an area the size of the United Kingdom. Germany suffered serious flooding in 2021. The 2022 flood in Pakistan flooded large parts of the country. China has seen both droughts and floods. Terrible droughts have hit the Horn of Africa for many years. India has stopped rice exports due to damage from heavy rain.
Critics of climate action often complain about what they see as the overuse of “crisis talk”. If everything is a crisis, nothing is a crisis.
When Guterres uses deeply impactful phrases, he’s not inviting us to imagine a Hollywood-style disaster. What he’s hoping is to make people listen and act — now we can see what climate change looks like.
Are there better phrases to describe this? Possibly. Take the challenge yourself: can you think up a brief, correct phrase to cover worsening local-and-regional-scale droughts, fires, typhoons and floods; damage to crops and food safety; water shortages; existential threats to coral reefs and low-lying communities? You can see how hard it is.
64. What does the underlined word “coined” in paragraph 2 mean?
A. Explained. B. Invented.
C. Valued. D. Accepted.
65. What do critics think of the term “global boiling”?
A. It is overused. B. It is exaggerated.
C. It is lacking in enough attention. D. It is too weak to describe the problem.
66. What can we infer from paragraph 4?
A. Climate crises are worsening. B. Several crises will be solved.
C. People will face food shortages. D. People are taking effective measures.
67. What is Guterres’s hope in using deeply impactful phrases?
A. To scare people into taking immediate action.
B. To entertain readers with Hollywood-style stories.
C. To provide a more accurate description of global warming.
D. To make people aware of the severity of the climate crisis.
【答案】64. B 65. B 66. A 67. D

In recent years, aggression on social media have become commonplace. More than half of the victims said they didn’t know the identity of the perpetrator (作恶者). Most people agreed that the anonymity (匿名) of the Internet provides cover for nasty and harassing (骚扰) behavior.
Does this growing aggression on social media give us a glimpse of our real human nature? Are we-at our core-aggressive beasts? It’s true that hate crimes are on the rise, and political divisions app ear to be growing. The level of public bitterness-especially online-is substantial. But I don’t believe that’s because social media has unlocked our cruel human nature.
As an evolutionary anthropologist, I have spent years researching our transformation as a species. Over the past two million years, we have evolved from groups of apelike beings armed with sticks and stones to the creators of cars, rockets, and nations. Our bigger brains have allowed us to bond and cooperate in more complex and diverse ways than any other animal. Meanwhile, “you are whom you meet.” How we perceive, experience, and act in the world is shaped by who and what surround us on a daily basis. This process has deep evolutionary roots and gives humans what we call a shared reality.
I would argue that the rise in online aggression is a product of our evolutionary social skills, the social media boom, and the specific political, economic and social context where we find ourselves. This explosive combination has opened up a space for increasingly more people to fan the flames of aggression and insult online. Aggressive behavior-especially to those you don’t have to confront face-to-face-is easier than it’s ever been. And for the aggressor, there are often no consequences.
Yes, it seems that the world is getting more aggressive, but that’s not because we are more aggressive at our core. It’s because we haven’t been standing up against bullying, abuse, and aggressive harassment, and promoting pro-social attitudes and actions our contemporary world demands. In person and on social media, we must do both.
68. What does the underlined word “that” in paragraph two refer to?
A. Hate crimes on the rise. B. Growing political divisions.
C. Considerable online bitterness. D. The transformation of humans.
69. What’s the author’s attitude toward social media?
A. Critical. B. Objective. C. Approving. D. Ironic.
70. What does the author propose to address the issue of growing aggression?
A. Embracing our aggressive nature to compete in today’s world.
B. Strengthening laws to hold perpetrators responsible for their online actions.
C. Promoting positive behaviors and interactions in both real-life and digital spaces.
D. Focusing only on reducing anonymity on the internet to reduce offensive behavior.
71. What is mainly discussed in this passage?
A. The impact of social media on society.
B. The influence of evolution on our behavior.
C. The reasons behind rising online aggression.
D. The factors in the social media development.
【答案】68. C 69. B 70. C 71. C

【导语】本文是议论文。本文论述了网上霸凌或其他攻击性言行增加的原因,是人类残忍的本性使然,还是社交媒体的过错。
【68题详解】
词句猜测题。根据第二段中“Does this growing aggression on social media give us a glimpse of our real human nature? Are we-at our core-aggressive beasts? It’s true that hate crimes are on the rise, and political divisions app ear to be growing. The level of public bitterness-especially online-is substantial. (社交媒体上日益增长的攻击性是否让我们看到了真正的人性?我们本质上是好斗的野兽吗?的确,仇恨犯罪正在上升,政治分歧似乎也在扩大。公众的痛苦程度——尤其是在网上——是相当高的。)”可知,that指上文公众相当高的痛苦程度。A. Hate crimes on the rise仇恨犯罪呈上升趋势;B. Growing political divisions日益严重的政治分歧;C. Considerable online bitterness相当多的网络痛苦;D. The transformation of humans人类的转变。故选C。
【69题详解】
推理判断题。根据一段中“Most people agreed that the anonymity (匿名) of the Internet provides cover for nasty and harassing (骚扰) behavior. (大多数人认为,互联网的匿名性为恶劣和骚扰行为提供了掩护。)”和第二段中“The level of public bitterness-especially online-is substantial. But I don’t believe that’s because social media has unlocked our cruel human nature. (公众的痛苦程度——尤其是在网上——是相当高的。但我不相信这是因为社交媒体释放了我们残忍的人性。)”可知,虽然很多人认为网络的匿名性为网上攻击性行为提供了遮掩,作者不这么认为,然后客观论述了背后的原因。所以作者对社交媒体的态度还是比较公正客观的。故选B。
【70题详解】
推理判断题。根据最后一段“Yes, it seems that the world is getting more aggressive, but that’s not because we are more aggressive at our core. It’s because we haven’t been standing up against bullying, abuse, and aggressive harassment, and promoting pro-social attitudes and actions our contemporary world demands. In person and on social media, we must do both. 【71题详解】
主旨大意题。通读全文,尤其是通过第一段“In recent years, aggression on social media have become commonplace. More than half of the victims said they didn’t know the identity of the perpetrator (作恶者). Most people agreed that the anonymity (匿名) of the Internet provides cover for nasty and harassing (骚扰) behavior. (近年来,社交媒体上的攻击性已经变得司空见惯。超过一半的受害者说他们不知道行凶者的身份。大多数人认为,互联网的匿名性为恶劣和骚扰行为提供了掩护。)”引入话题:网上攻击性言行的增加,很多人认为始作俑者是网络本身。第二段中“But I don’t believe that’s because social media has unlocked our cruel human nature. (但我不相信这是因为社交媒体释放了我们残忍的人性。)”作者提出是不是因为人类本性好斗呢?他不认为是社交媒体释放了我们的本性,接着概括了三个原因:人类进化出的社交特性,网络媒体的繁荣,各种政治、经济和社会环境的影响。最后一段“Yes, it seems that the world is getting more aggressive, but that’s not because we are more aggressive at our core. It’s because we haven’t been standing up against bullying, abuse, and aggressive harassment, and promoting pro-social attitudes and actions our contemporary world demands. In person and on social media, we must do both. The way people spend their holidays changed a lot from 2005 to 2015.
__________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】 The way people spend their holidays changed a lot from 2005 to 2015. The table shows that a greater number of people spent their holidays traveling abroad in 2015. The rate of 2015 (22%) doubled that of 2005 (11%). We are sure that the number will further increase for Chinese people’s incomes continue to rise, and more and more people can afford journeys abroad.
At the same time, the seaside attracted a lot of people. However, the rate slightly dropped from 38% in 2005 to 31% in 2015, the reason for which lies in the fact that sea water is being polluted. The polluted seaside is likely to drive more visitors away.
The year 2015 witnessed a sharp increase in the number of people who went climbing and camping. The rate of 2015 was three times higher than that of 2005. The reason is that more and more people are eager to get close to nature. It is not only beneficial to their health but also to their peace of mind.
In conclusion, with the improvement of living conditions, people are not satisfied with the basic demand. We travel farther than before, and we pay more attention to the life quality.
