The Toronto Islands
North America’s largest urban car-free community offers plenty of green space and beaches for visitors of all ages. Those looking for exercise can explore the islands by bike while checking out the breathtaking views of Toronto’s skyline; visit the rental facility near the Centre Island ferry dock.
St. Lawrence Market

I was excited to take my rescue Beagle (比格犬) to the river the other day, as it’s within walking distance of our new home. Having spent her first six years in a cage, Georgie had never seen a body of water, and I wanted to get there before sunset to watch her experience it.
I was growing increasingly impatient about all the stops her little Beagle nose required. She inspected (检查) the grass, dirt, and trees, and licked (舔) whatever was stuck to the road. These were all new discoveries for her, and she took her time studying them.
When I accepted that it was fruitless to hurry her along, I whipped out my cell phone and began texting. I thought that I needed something to do while Georgie was slowing us down. Then, for some reason, I heard the cicadas (蝉), and I remembered that the sound of cicadas is my favorite sound in the world. That awakened something buried within me that longed for the simple pleasures that had been replaced by technology.
I made a conscious decision to be present, and to enjoy the journey to the river Just like Georgie. Now, I admired the flowers and the winding ivy on our path. I smelled the grass and the flowers, and the dirt and the air. I treasured each one equally, as if discovering them for the first time.
As we neared our destination I realized something even more important: It didn’t matter if we even reached the river. Why must there always be a destination? Georgie had no idea that we had a destination. She was present for the journey, and she savored every bit of that sweet experience. There was no race and no finish line.
Now I’m not sure who rescued whom.
24. Why did the author take out the cellphone?
A. To kill time B. To photograph sunset
C. To deal with important texts D. To record cicadas’ sound
25. What is paragraph 4 mainly about?
A. How I enjoyed the journey B. What I saw on the way
C. Why I traveled to the river D. Whether I reached my destination
26. What does the underlined word “savored” mean?
A. spotted B. expected C. enjoyed D. deserved
27. What is the best title for the text?
A. Say Goodbye To Cellphones
B. Think Like A Dog
C. Learn To Get Along With Pets
D. Travel Toward Destinations

The parents of a young man with Down Syndrome (唐氏综合征) have made an incredible move to set up his future after he faced constant rejections when looking for work.
After graduation, Anthony, 19-year-old, should have faced multiple career choices about which door to open, but when he actually tried those doors, one after the other, it was locked. Danijela and John Vrkic, from Canberra, were genuinely concerned about their son's future. It was rather difficult for people with a disability, especially those with an intellectual disability, to find any type of work. Inspired by their son, they decided to leave their respective careers behind to build a business.
Mrs. Vrkic got to work armed with her traditional family recipe for "krofhe'', or doughnuts (甜甜圈),which dates back over four generations. She tested the market by sharing her homemade krofne at her previous office with colleagues and friends. Fortunately, it proved to be a hit. After four years in business, there are Krofine Canberra pop-up shops at a number of shopping centres, and an online store is also available.
Today, Krofne is a much loved, disability-inclusive family business and a social enterprise in Canberra. Employment opportunities for people with special needs have been generated. The specially designed KINECT program has highlighted how important it is for people with a disability to feel valued and included in the community. Mrs. Vrkic is an incredibly passionate advocate for inclusivity. She feels if somebody has a disability, it doesn't necessarily mean that they can't work. What she would like to see is for Australia to be inclusive—that every organisation understands and employs the disabled. That is her goal.
On the International Day of People with Disabilities, Mrs. Vrkic was invited to speak at Parliament House. She said, “We're a very small fish in the sea, if our business can do it, why can't other people ?”
28. What did the parents do incredibly?
A. They made doughnuts to sell.
B. They raised a child with a disability.
C. They quit their jobs to help their son.
D. They weren't discouraged after losing jobs.
29. Why were Mrs. Vrkic's doughnuts popular?
A. Because she drew the inspiration from her son.
B. Because she followed the recipe passed down in her family.
C. Because she applied the technique learned from her previous job.
D. Because she got assistance from her previous colleagues and friends.
30. Which of the following words can best describe Mrs. Vrkic?
A. Caring and ambitious. B. Elegant and determined.
C. Humorous and brave. D. Passionate and curious.
31. What can be inferred from Mrs. Vrkic's saying?
A. Her success can be followed.
B. Her business needs to be expanded.
C. Every business can succeed with united efforts.
D. Every business can offer the disabled assistance.
C 29. B 30. A 31. D

When you go abroad you’re going to experience new cultures, people, food, music and probably a new language. Everything and everyone you meet is new.
Experts say it is not easy to get used to life in a new culture. “Culture shock” is the term (术语) these experts use when talking about the feelings that people have in a new environment. There are three stages of culture shock, say the experts. In the first stage, the newcomers like their new environment. Then, when the fresh experience dies, they begin to hate the city, the country, the people, and everything else. In the last stage, the newcomers begin to adjust to their surroundings and, as a result, enjoy their life more.
There are some obvious factors in culture shock. The weather may be unpleasant. The customs may be different. The public service systems — the telephones, post office, or transportation — may be difficult to work out. The simplest things seem to be big problems. The language may be difficult.
Who feels culture shock? Everyone does in this way or that. But culture shock surprises most people. Very often the people having the worst culture shock are those who never had any difficulties in their own community. Coming to a new country, these people find they do not have the same settled positions. They find themselves without any identity. They have to build a new self-image.
Culture shock leads to a feeling of disorientation This feeling may be homesickness. When homesick, people feel like staying inside all the time. They want to protect themselves from the strange environment, and create an escape inside their room for a sense of safety. This escape does solve the problem of culture shock for the short term, but it does nothing to make the person familiar with the culture. Getting to know the new environment and gaining experience — these are the long-term solutions to the problem of culture shock.
32. When people move to a new country, they _______.
A. will adapt to their new surroundings with difficulty
B. have well prepared for the new surroundings
C. will adapt to the culture of the country quickly
D. will never be familiar with the culture of the country
33. According to the passage factors that cause culture shock include all of the followings except _______.
A. language communication B. weather conditions and customs
C. public service systems D. homesickness
34. According to the passage, the more successful you are at home, _______.
A. the fewer difficulties you may have abroad
B. the more difficulties you may have abroad
C. the more money you will earn abroad
D. the less homesick you may feel abroad
35. The writer tells us that the best way to overcome culture shock is to _______.

D. return to our own country

Food plays an essential role in our lives and rightfully so: The food we eat is related to our culture. ___36___. Don’t believe me? Here’s why food is the best way to understand a culture:
___37___
It doesn’t matter where you’re from-you have to eat. Your social culture most likely developed from the need to eat. Once they surpassed hunting and gathering, many early civilizations organized themselves in ways that promoted food distribution and production. That also meant that the animals, land and resources you were near governed what you’d consume and how you’d prepare and cook it.
Food preservation techniques are unique to climates and lifestyles.
Ever wonder why the process to preserve meat is so different around the world? ___38___. In Morocco, if preserved correctly, Khlea, a dish, is still good for two years when stored at room temperature. That makes much sense in Morocco, which has had a strong nomadic(游牧的)population, desert landscape, and extremely warm, dry temperatures.
The main local cuisines illustrate historical eating patterns.
Some societies have cuisines that are entirely based on meat, and others are almost entirely plant-based. India’s cuisine is extremely varied from region to region, with meat and wheat heavy dishes in the far north, to spectacular fish delicacies in the east, to rice-based vegetarian diets in the south. ___39___.
Food tourism.
___40___. A food tourist won’t just focus on having a pint at Oktoberfest, but will be interested in learning the German beer making process, and possibly how they can make their own fresh beer. Since their interest in food is more than meal deep, the tourists have the chance to learn local preparation techniques that can lead to other aspects of a particular region’s culture.
A. Food affects the civilization
B. Food is a universal necessity
C. And the western part is home to strict vegetarians
D. Some people have a trip just for enjoying the food
E. It has to do with local resources, needs, and climates
F. You can learn much about a particular culture by exploring their food
G. Some people have taken the combination of food and culture to a new level

That also meant that the animals, land and resources you were near governed what you’d consume and how you’d prepare and cook it.(你来自哪里并不重要——你必须吃东西。 B项“Food is a universal necessity(食物是普遍的必需品)”符合本段主旨。

故填which/that。
故填were organized。
故填the。

故填with。
作状语要用when, where, why。
故填which/that。

As a sixth grader, I found it hard to fit in and make friends.
Our teacher had assigned (分派, 布置) “secret friends” for the coming week. She wrote each kid's name on a piece of paper and threw them into a glass; then we each closed our eyes and picked out one. By the middle of the week, everyone had turned this assignment into a competition to see whose secret friend could leave the best gift. It seemed that everyone was getting cool presents from their friend except me.
On the last morning of our assignment. I walked into my classroom and noticed a package with a box of powder (胭脂粉). The girls sitting near me laughed at the gift I had received. What's worse, the powder had already been opened.
I tried to forget about the embarrassing gift, but when I was in the bathroom during the break, the girls started speaking ill of my secret friend of giving it to me. I quickly joined in. “How terrible,” I heard myself saying “What could my friend be thinking by giving me such a stupid gift? My grandmother wouldn't even want it.” The girls laughed at my remarks (评论) and rushed out of the bathroom. I stayed to wash my hands and let water run through my fingers as I thought about what I had just said. It wasn't normal like me to say mean (刻薄的) things like that about someone.
Paragraph 1:
Then I saw my classmate Janet come out of a bathroom booth (厕所隔间), tears streaming down her face.
________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Paragraph 2:
Along with my apologies, I explained the reason.
________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Paragraph 1:
Then I saw my classmate Janet come out of a bathroom booth(厕所隔间), tears streaming down her face. She shouted at me with anger, “If you don’t want my gift you can just leave it instead of laughing at it. This is the best powder from my mum! “Before I could say a word, Janet dashed out, leaving me dumb with deep regret. But soon I clenched my fingers and made up my mind to find Janet and say sorry to her. There she was, sitting in a tree shadow wiping her eyes.
Paragraph 2:
Along with my apologies, I explained the reason. I was not a mean girl by judging people’s presents. The reason why I complained in front of the girls was that I wanted to fit in, having a sense of belonging in the group. Hearing my sincere words, Janet calmed herself down after constant sobs and said, “True friendship comes from genuine care and love for each other. I think that’s our teacher’s intention of this ‘secret friend’ assignment”. That day, I learned to cherish real friendship.

As we neared our destination, I realized something even more important: It didn’t matter if we even reached the river. Why must there always be a destination? Georgie had no idea that we had a destination. She was present for the journey, and she savored every bit of that sweet experience. There was no race and no finish line.
Now I’m not sure who rescued whom.

B. They raised a child with a disability.
C. They quit their jobs to help their son.
D. They weren't discouraged after losing jobs.

A. Because she drew the inspiration from her son.
B. Because she followed the recipe passed down in her family.
C. Because she applied the technique learned from her previous job.
D. Because she got assistance from her previous colleagues and friends.
30. Which of the following words can best describe Mrs. Vrkic?
A. Caring and ambitious. B. Elegant and determined.
C. Humorous and brave. D. Passionate and curious.
31. What can be inferred from Mrs. Vrkic's saying?

33. According to the passage, factors that cause culture shock include all of the followings except _______.
A. language communication B. weather conditions and customs
C. public service systems D. homesickness
34. According to the passage, the more successful you are at home, _______.
A. the fewer difficulties you may have abroad
B the more difficulties you may have abroad
C. the more money you will earn abroad
D. the less homesick you may feel abroad
35. The writer tells us that the best way to overcome culture shock is to _______.
A. protect ourselves from unfamiliar environment
B. develop a strange sense of self-protection
C. get familiar with new culture
D. return to our own country

Paragraph 2:
Along with my apologies, I explained the reason.
