Dear editor,
I’m writing to share my opinions on AI-assisted teaching in middle schools. Personally, AI is a helpful partner rather than a replacement for teachers.
AI brings great convenience to our study. For one thing, it can quickly correct homework and point out my grammar mistakes, saving teachers much time. For another, it offers personalized learning materials. When I struggle with English grammar, AI recommends targeted exercises for me to improve efficiently.
However, AI has limits. It cannot comfort us when we feel stressed or explain knowledge flexibly like real teachers. Last month, I failed to understand a reading passage after checking AI’s analysis. My English teacher patiently talked me through the text and cheered me up, which AI could never achieve.
In short, we should make good use of AI as a useful tool while valuing teachers’ unique warmth and guidance.
Yours sincerely,
Li Hua

I. Grammar and vocabulary
Section A (10分)
Directions: After reading the passage below, fill in the blanks to make the passage coherent and grammatically correct. For the blanks with a given word, fill in each blank with the proper form of the given word; for the other blanks, use one word that best fits each blank.
Why is Art so Powerful?
Perhaps the simplest answer to this question is that art touches us emotionally.
Art is powerful 1 it can potentially influence our culture, politics, and even the economy. When we see a powerful work of art, you feel 2 touching deep within your core, giving us the power to make real-life changes.
It has the power to educate people about almost anything. It creates awareness and presents information in a way that could be absorbed by many easily. In a world 3 there are those who don’t even have access to good education, art makes education an even 4 (great) equalizer of society.
It breaks cultural, social, and economic barriers. While art hardly really solves poverty or promotes social justice 5 its own, it can be used as a leveled playing field for discourse and expression. The reason why everyone can relate to art is 6 everyone has emotions and personal experiences. Therefore, anyone can learn to appreciate art regardless of their social background, economic standing or political affiliation.
It accesses higher orders of thinking. Art doesn’t just make you absorb information. Rather, it makes you think about current ideas and inspire you 7 (make) your own. This is why creativity is a form of intelligence — it is a special ability that unlocks the potential of the human mind. In fact, studies have shown that exposure to art can make you better in other fields of knowledge.
The truth is that people have recognized how powerful art can be. Many times in history have we heard of people 8 (criticize), threatened, censored, and even killed because of their artwork. Those responsible for these reactions, may it be an aggressive government or a dissident (持不同政见的) group, 9 (take) these measures against artists knowing how much their works can affect the politics in a 10 (give) area. In the hands of good people, however, art can be used to give back hope or instill courage in a society that’s undergoing a lot of hardships.
1.because 2.it 3.where 4.greater 5.on 6.that 7.to make 8.being criticized 9.take 10.given
代词it指代前文的a powerful work of art(震撼的艺术作品),作 feel 的宾语。
on one’s own 此处用on its own表示“艺术自身”。
The reason why… is that…
inspire sb. to do sth.
hear of sb./sth. doing sth. people与动词criticize之间是被动关系,且criticize的动作与谓语动词heard of同时发生,应用动名词的被动形式being criticized。
may it be...or...(无论是……
Section B (10分)
Directions: Complete the following passage by using the words in the box. Each word can only be used once. Note that there is one word more than you need.
A.bond B.boundaries C. channel D.constructed E. existed F. gradually
G. relatable H. reserved I. personally J. stood K. visibility
A Dangerous Relationship
At nine, I formed an intense, entirely imaginary attachment to Mickey Dolenz of The Monkees, a 1960s TV-created pop band. He had long left the spotlight and, of course, didn’t know I 11 . Still, I drifted into a dream whenever Pleasant Valley Sunday played.
Looking back, I now understand that The Monkees were a carefully 12 media product. Yet their success lay in how convincingly they created a sense of personal connection. On television, they broke the usual 13 , addressing viewers directly with playful glances. In interviews, they shared stories that felt personal and natural. By appearing open and slightly weak, they encouraged audiences to feel they truly knew them.
This kind of one-sided emotional 14 , described as a “parasocial relationship,” is far from new. While working on an episode of Digital Human for BBC Radio 4, I came across earlier examples. One was Lonesome Gal, a radio voice from the mid-20th century who spoke gently to listeners. Her opening lines suggested exclusive devotion, creating the impression that each listener was 15 addressed. For many, she became a kind of imagined companion. Inevitably, such emotional closeness also provided a(n) 16 for persuasion — and for selling products.
In today’s digital world, these relationships are everywhere — and often built on purpose. To attract attention, creators present themselves as open and 17 , encouraging followers to feel a personal connection. This works at first, especially when interaction still feels direct. However, as audiences grow, this model begins to fail. It is possible to reply to a few individuals, but not to thousands. As a result, what once felt like a genuine exchange 18 shifts into something less personal.
Even so, the audience’s sense of connection remains. People continue to believe they know the person behind the screen, even when the interaction is limited. For creators, this creates a tension between 19 and privacy: they must stay engaging while protecting their own space. Unlike earlier forms of media, where agents or producers 20 in between, today’s online figures often face their audiences directly. And when relationships break down, there is rarely anyone to step in and manage the consequences.
11.E 12.D 13.B 14.A 15.I 16.C 17.G 18.F 19.K 20.J

II. Reading Comprehension (45分)
Section A (15分)
Directions: For each blank in the following passage there are four words or phrases marked A, B, C and D. Fill in each blank with the word or phrase that best fits the context.
In 1979, the US public was drawn to the “Jim twins,” a pair of identical twin brothers adopted at birth by different families who reunited at age 39. Their shared names were just the beginning of their 21 . Both worked in law enforcement, enjoyed carpentry, owned Chevrolets, and took vacations at the same beach in Florida. Even more striking, they both married women named Linda, divorced, and later married a Betty.
The Jim twins inspired the Minnesota Study of Twins Reared Apart, which compared 137 pairs of identical and non-identical twins raised 22 . This study was one of the first to show that around half of personality differences come from genetics, 23 the idea that we are born as blank slates (板). It highlighted the complexity of the nature VS nurture (培养)debate, a topic often 24 in discussions.
In his book Unique: The New Science of Human Individuality, neuroscientist David Linden examines the latest research on the diverse factors that 25 human behavior and physiology. He explores how we are influenced by our genes, upbringing, and 26 , exploring a range of topics including how we sleep and perceive the world.
One interesting aspect Linden discusses is our ability to 27 smells. While it may seem like a fixed trait (特点), research shows it is more 28 than we think. In high-income countries, the sense of smell is often considered less important than vision or hearing. 29 , hunter-gatherer communities like the Maniq of Thailand excel at identifying smells, likely due to their reliance on this ability for survival. This difference extends to 30 : the Maniq language includes 15 abstract words for smells, while English has few words to describe smells that aren't related to their source.
Another important factor affecting 31 is the randomness of early development. Twin studies show that while about half of personality differences come from genetics, parenting has a 32 influence — usually less than 10%. Geneticist Robert Plomin suggests that much of the remaining variation comes from random events during brain development. Linden points out that “the wiring of the human brain is so complex that it can’t be precisely determined by a person’s DNA.” Small random changes in cell position or movement can lead to significant 33 in how the brain is wired and functions.
Despite advancements in understanding brain development, many 34 remain. It’s unclear how many of the Jim twins’ coincidences originated from genetic similarities compared to randomness. While we are just beginning to 35 the complexities of the human brain, Linden’s work provides valuable insights that cast light on the nature of individuality.

Section B (22分)
Directions: Read the following three passages. Each passage is followed by several questions or unfinished statements. For each of them there are four choices marked A, B, C and D. Choose the one that fits best according to the information given in the passage you have just read.
(A)
Often when we’re confronted with situations of feeling out of place or unqualified, we try to “fake it till we make it.”
It doesn’t work — and trust me, I’ve tried.
Years ago, when I was in college, I had an enduring feeling of uncertainty and self-doubt. As one of four females majoring in electrical engineering, I had a fear of being stereotyped so I tried to act the part of the masculine persona typical of engineering majors. I postured and pretended, but no matter what amount of “faking it” I put out, I found myself with more self-doubt than when I started. Even after college, in a new role at a company, I discovered that my go-to solution to the problems involved in constantly being on the outside of the “elite” in-circle was to, as a friend put it, act with the confidence of a “plain white male.”
I am hardly the only person who has tried this approach to no avail. In one paper on authenticity, my colleagues and I have noted that being inauthentic has negative effects on perceptions of performance in the long term. This negative side certainly held true for me. Overwhelmingly, when I acted like a man — or how I thought a man would act — I got pushback. People saw me as aggressive. I felt superficial, came across as inauthentic and wasn’t getting the sort of support or social acceptance that my “elite” male peers were.
But before long, I discovered that I too had the ability to make honest and authentic connections with senior leaders in my organization. Once I accidentally shared a ride with the senior VP of my division. Over the course of the drive, we had a natural conversation where I felt confident and comfortable. I asked him for advice on things that came up organically. And he saw that I was a smart, insightful person. He even invited me to give a presentation to his internal team. To this day, he remains one of my most trusted mentors.
It’s important to remember that we all have something that others are judging us on. In the long term, on a macro level, posturing and faking it provides only temporary value. What ends up being more long-standing is a belief that inevitably holds people back — a feeling of uncertainty and self-doubt.
We can’t try to cater to what we think others want, because we have no idea how to do that or exactly what they want. Instead, we have to be smart enough to seize chances to demonstrate who we really are, being unapologetic and confident.
36.The root cause of the author’s “faking it” is probably ________.
A.her gender and major
B.her self-doubt and fear
C.her desire to be typical
D.her confidence in males
37.What may be the negative effect of being inauthentic on a person who “fakes it”?
A.Trying the approach of “fakes it” to no avail.
B.Overwhelming perceptions of performance.
C.Meeting resistance to the supposed aggression.
D.Being regarded as unsupportive and unaccepted.
38.The author suggests that we should _________.
A.remember to ask others to judge us on something
B.eliminate the temporary value “fakes it” provides
C.hold back the feeling of uncertainty and self-doubt
D.display our true selves confidently at the right time
39.Which is the best title for this passage?
A.Why “Fake It Till You Make It” Is Terrible Advice.
B.Make It Rather Than Fake It Or Doubt Yourself.
C.Stop Faking the Fake, Start Trusting the Trusted.
D.Don’t Let the Chances Slip Through Your Fingers.
【答案】36.B 37.C 38.D 39.A
根据第三段中“Years ago, when I was in college, I had an enduring feeling of uncertainty and self-doubt. As one of four females majoring in electrical engineering, I had a fear of being stereotyped so I tried to act the part of the masculine persona typical of engineering majors. I postured and pretended, but no matter what amount of “faking it” I put out, I found myself with more self-doubt than when I started.( 多年前,当我还在上大学时,我一直有一种不确定和自我怀疑的感觉。作为电气工程专业中唯一的四位女生之一,我害怕被贴上刻板印象的标签,所以我就努力模仿工程专业学生通常所具有的男性形象。我摆姿势、假装自己,但无论我如何“假装”,我发现自己反而比刚开始时更加缺乏自信。)”可知,自我怀疑和对被刻板印象评判的恐惧,是作者试图伪装自己的核心驱动力。
37.推理判断题。根据第四段中“This negative side certainly held true for me. Overwhelmingly, when I acted like a man — or how I thought a man would act — I got pushback. People saw me as aggressive. I felt superficial, came across as inauthentic and wasn’t getting the sort of support or social acceptance that my “elite” male peers were.( 这种消极的一面对我来说当然是正确的。绝大多数情况下,当我表现得像个男人——或者我认为男人会有的样子——我都会遭到反对。人们会认为我咄咄逼人。我感觉自己肤浅,显得不真实,而且没有得到那些“精英”男性同龄人所拥有的那种支持或社会认可。)”可推知,不真实的伪装会让他人产生误解,将正常的表现误判为攻击性,进而引发抵触,这是直接的负面影响。
38.细节理解题。根据最后一段“We can’t try to cater to what we think others want, because we have no idea how to do that or exactly what they want. Instead, we have to be smart enough to seize chances to demonstrate who we really are, being unapologetic and confident.( 我们不能试图迎合我们认为别人想要的东西,因为我们不知道如何去做到这一点,也不知道他们到底想要什么。相反,我们必须足够聪明,抓住机会来展现真实的自我,要毫不退缩、充满自信地去做到这一点。)”可知,作者建议我们在恰当的时候自信地展现真实的自我。
39.主旨大意题。根据文章大意以及第一段“Often when we’re confronted with situations of feeling out of place or unqualified, we try to “fake it till we make it.”(通常,当我们遭遇感到格格不入或能力不足的情况时,我们往往会试图“先假装一切正常,直到真正做好为止”。)”和第二段“It doesn’t work—and trust me, I’ve tried.( 但这根本不起作用——相信我,我试过这种方法。)”

Care for a zoom-in observation of animals with no bars between you and the observed as opposed to ordinary zoos? Where to have close-up encounters with some of the world’s most rare animals? We are revealing for you:
1. Right whales, Bay of Fundy, Canada
Northern right whales are on the brink of extinction, but survivors arrive in the Bay of Fundy each summer (May through October) to feed east of Grand Manan Island. They are recognized by a broad back and no dorsal fin, which distinguish them from other whales entering the bay.
Planning: Whale-watching tours operate out of Digby Neck peninsula on Nova Scotia and nearby islands, such as Brier Island. St. Andrews. Grand Manan Island. and Deer Island.
2. Grizzly bears, Alaska
Grizzlies like salmon. In mid-July and again in mid-August, grizzlies make for Alaskan rivers to hook out the fish with their formidable claws. The bears gather in large numbers at rapids and pools, sometimes fighting for the best sites. Brooks Falls in Katmai National Park, and Fish Creek, near Hyder, have viewing platforms.
Planning: Most fishing sites are reached by chartered light aircraft and a hike. Hyder is off the Swart-Cassiar Highway.
3. Monarch butterflies, Sierra Chincua, Mexico
Each fall, millions of North American monarch butterflies migrate thousands of miles to the oyalmel fir forests of the Transvolcanic Mountain Range, in the state of Mchoacdn. They flock intimately (closely) on tree trunks, bushes, and on the ground, fully showing their gregarious nature and occupy Sierra Chincua and four neighbouring hills that make up the Monarch Butterfly Biosphere Reserve.
Planning: Chineua is one of two hills in the reserve open to the public from November through March.
4. Komodo dragons, Komodo Island, Indonesia
Landing on Komodo, you would feel like stepping back to a time when dinosaurs ruled the Earth, as park maps reported, “Here be dragons!” This mountainous volcanic island is home to the world’s largest living lizard—the Komodo dragon. Weighing 79 to 91 kg. the Komodo dragon has a tail as long as its body. You can hike to a viewpoint at Banugulung and watch as park rangers feed food to the lizards, some of which are more than 10 ft (3 m) long.
Planning: Komodo is reached solely by boat from Bima (on eastern Sumbawa) or Labuan Bajo (on western Flores).
5. Wildebeest migration, Serengeti, Tanzania
Undoubtedly the world’s most spectacular wildlife sight is the annual wildebeest migration, when 1. 4 million wildebeest and 200, 000 zebras and gazelles are on the move across the Serengeti plains. The animals are trekking to chase the clean water and fresh grass. Along the way, lions and hyenas stalk them, and crocodiles lie in wait.
Planning: The herds migrate across Tanzania from December through July, and then pass through the Masai Mara in Kenya in August and September.
40.The underlined word gregarious is closest in meaning to ________________.
A.being able to climb B.preferring group living
C.migrating in small numbers D.moderate in temper
41.Which of the following statements is NOT TRUE according to the passage?
A.Right whales are distinguished from other whales by unique appearance features.
B.Viewing spots for grizzly bears are accessible by air and on foot.
C.Komodo Island is located east of Flores and West of Sumbawa
D.Wildebeest herds travel to pursue favourable food conditions.
42.Li Hua is an adventurous visitor longing for closer look at animals. He is taking a gap year and doing voluntary work now in Indonesia. He will go back to China and further his study next fall. Which of the following will be the most reasonable wildlife-watching route after he finishes his voluntary work this winter?
A.Alaska→Bay of Fundy→Sierra Chincua→Serengeti
B.Serengeti→Alaska→Bay of Fundy→Sierra Chincua
C.Bay of Fundy→Sierra Chincua→Serengeti→Alaska
D.Sierra Chincua→Serengeti→Alaska→Bay of Fundy
根据“Komodo dragons, Komodo Island, Indonesia”部分关键句“Planning: Komodo is reached solely by boat from Bima (on eastern Sumbawa) or Labuan Bajo (on western Flores).

You’re walking down a quiet street and suddenly you hear some footsteps. Undoubtedly, it means that there’s someone around. But have you ever wondered why it occurs to us that it’s someone else’s footsteps, not ours?
According to a new study published in the journal Nature in September, this phenomenon arises from a function in our brain to ignore the noise we make ourselves.
In order to explore how our brain does this, a group of scientists carried out an experiment with mice at Duke University. The research entered on an intuition-that we are usually unaware of the sound of our own footsteps-as a vehicle for understanding larger neural phenomena; how this behavior reveals the ability to monitor, recognize, and remember the sound of one’s own movements in relation to those of their larger environments.
In the experiment, research controlled the sounds of a group of mice could hear, reported Science Daily. During the first several days, the mice would hear the same sound each time they took a step. This was just like “running on a tiny piano with each key playing exactly the same note”, senior study author Richard Mooney, a professor of neurobiology at Duke University, told Live Science.
Scientists found that their auditory cortex (听觉皮层) – the area of the brain that processes sound –became active at first but decreased its response to the sound after two or three minutes when the mice became familiar with it.
“ It’s almost like they were wearing special headphones that could filter (过滤) out the sound of their own movements.” David Schneider, an assistant professor at the Center for Neutral Science at New York University, told HuffPost.
But once the sound changed, their auditory cortex became active again. This suggests that the “sensory filter” in a mouse’s brain could help it detect new sounds or abnormal noise in the environment easily after tuning out familiar sounds.
“For mice, this is really important,” said Schneider. “They are prey animals, so they really need to be able to listen for a cat creeping up on them, even when they’re walking and making noise.
Being able to ignore the sounds of one’s own movements is likely important for humans as well. But the ability to predict the sounds of our own actions is also important for more complex human behaviors such as speaking or playing an instrument.
“When we learn to speak or to play music, we predict what sounds we are going to hear – such as when we prepare to strike keys on a piano – and we compare this to what we actually hear, “explains Schneider. “We use mismatches between expectation and experience to change how we play – and we get better over time because our brain is trying to minimize these errors.”
43.What can be discovered about mice in the experiment?
A.Their brain responds inactively to the familiar sounds
B.They are able to detect sounds other animals don’t notice.
C.They cannot identify different sounds except their own footsteps.
D.Different areas of their brain are responsible for different sounds.
44.What’s the function of the sensory filter?
A.Ignoring the sounds made by our companions.
B.Getting used to abnormal or unfamiliar sounds.
C.Identifying the sounds from a larger environment.
D.Being sensitive to the sounds of our own movement.
45.Why can a good symphony conductor immediately recognize it when a wrong note is played?
A.He has the ability to match the wrong note with the instrument player.
B.He has an intuition that he should ignore the sound of his own movement.
C.He has a low expectation and knows where players are likely to make errors.
D.He has a good prediction of how each note should be played in the orchestra.
46.What can be inferred from the passage?
A.Noise-filtering ability ensures us a quiet and undisturbed environment.
B.The ability to ignore familiar noises helps to detect potential dangers.
C.The activeness of auditory cortex determines our activity performance.
D.Sound-predicting ability seems not so important for humans as for animals.
【答案】43.A 44.C 45.D 46.B
This suggests that the “sensory filter” in a mouse’s brain could help it detect new sounds or abnormal noise in the environment easily after tuning out familiar sounds.(这表明,老鼠大脑中的“感觉过滤器”可以帮助它在排除熟悉的声音后,更容易地检测到环境中的新声音或异常噪音)。
It’s almost like they were wearing special headphones that could filter (过滤) out the sound of their own movements.(这就像他们戴着特殊的耳机,可以过滤掉自己运动的声音)。
Being able to ignore the sounds of one’s own movements is likely important for humans as well. But the ability to predict the sounds of our own actions is also important for more complex human behaviors such as speaking or playing an instrument.(能够忽略自己动作的声音对人类来说可能也很重要。
You’re walking down a quiet street and suddenly you hear some footsteps. Undoubtedly, it means that there’s someone around. But have you ever wondered why it occurs to us that it’s someone else’s footsteps, not ours?(你走在一条安静的街道上,突然听到一些脚步声。

The Man Who Invented the Future
Known as the father of science fiction, Jules Verne’s works transported readers on exciting adventures across the Earth and beyond. In his imaginative novels, Verne penned more than adventure stories. 47
In In the Year 2889, Verne described a world with global multimedia communication. The character is able to communicate with his wife on another continent, using the “phonotelephote” — a device capable of sending sound and images over long distances. In From the Earth to the Moon, Verne even envisioned a lunar voyage decades before the first actual moon landing.
Unlike fantasies or supernatural tales, Verne’s works focused on imagining the future. 48 This approach laid the foundation for the “hard science fiction” of the 20th century, which emphasized the importance of scientific accuracy.
Verne was an advocate of scientific progress and innovation. 49 Many of his stories feature brilliant yet mad scientists. For example, characters like Captain Nemo in Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea use their inventions for destructive purposes, suggesting that it is human nature, not the technology itself, that determines whether it becomes a force for good or harm.
50 He shapes the way generations think about technology and the human mind’s potential. That is the greatest achievement of Verne’s timeless works.
A.But his writings offer a different perspective.
B.Verne’s influence extends far beyond literature.
C.This method required extraordinary talents and scientific insights.
D.His visions were grounded in science and his own thorough research.
E.His tales may reduce the popularity of supernatural stories to some extent.
F.He also imagined technological advancements long before they became reality.

47.根据上文“Known as the father of science fiction, Jules Verne’s works transported readers on exciting adventures across the Earth and beyond. In his imaginative novels, Verne penned more than adventure stories.(儒勒·凡尔纳被誉为科幻小说之父,他的作品将读者带到了地球上甚至更远的地方进行激动人心的冒险。在他富有想象力的小说中,凡尔纳写的不仅仅是冒险故事)”以及第二段“In In the Year 2889, Verne described a world with global multimedia communication. The character is able to communicate with his wife on another continent, using the “phonotelephote” — a device capable of sending sound and images over long distances. In From the Earth to the Moon, Verne even envisioned a lunar voyage decades before the first actual moon landing.(在《2889年》中,凡尔纳描述了一个全球多媒体通信的世界。这个角色可以用“phonotelephote”——一种能够远距离发送声音和图像的设备——与他在另一个大陆上的妻子交流。在《从地球到月球》中,凡尔纳甚至在人类首次真正登月的几十年前就设想了一次月球航行)”可知,本句承上启下,说明凡尔纳的故事想象了一些当时并不存在的技术。故F选项“早在技术进步成为现实之前,他就已经在想象了”符合语境,与上文构成并列关系递进关系。故选F。
48.根据上文“Unlike fantasies or supernatural tales, Verne’s works focused on imagining the future.(与幻想或超自然故事不同,凡尔纳的作品侧重于对未来的想象)”以及后文“This approach laid the foundation for the “hard science fiction” of the 20th century, which emphasized the importance of scientific accuracy.(这种方法为20世纪的“硬科幻小说”奠定了基础,它强调科学准确性的重要性)”可知,本句主要说明凡尔纳为20世纪的“硬科幻小说”奠定了基础的具体方法是什么。
49.根据上文“Verne was an advocate of scientific progress and innovation.(凡尔纳是科学进步和创新的倡导者)”以及后文“Many of his stories feature brilliant yet mad scientists. 50.根据后文“He shapes the way generations think about technology and the human mind’s potential. That is the greatest achievement of Verne’s timeless works.(他塑造了几代人对技术和人类思维潜力的看法。这是凡尔纳不朽作品的最大成就)”可知,本段主要说明了凡尔纳的影响力。故B选项“凡尔纳的影响远远超出了文学”符合语境,故选B。
III. Summary Writing (10分)
51.Directions: Read the following passage. Summarize in no more than 60 words the main idea and the main point(s) of the passage. Use your own words as far as possible.
Dear Mom, Clear My Calendar
September is around the corner, and some of us are already complaining about summer’s end. But parents have a special reason to do so. The end of summer means the start of school. And these days, planning a young child’s schedule is a big challenge. The challenge is no longer finding activities to fill a child’s day; it is saying no to the hundreds of options available. Our mailbox is filled with brochures urging us to sign our kids up for classes from cooking to martial arts (武术).
Educators are themselves discouraged by the number of special classes that many children attend. In the name of “enrichment”, three-year-olds not only go to preschool in the morning but study French or gymnastics after lunch. One teacher tells of a four-year-old asking for help in the toilet before hurrying off to tennis. Another teacher says that children sometimes hold on to her at pickup time. What happened to unstructured time?
A generous explanation is that we enjoy giving children opportunities we never had. The truth, however, is that many parents have doubts about how much time they spend away from their families. And one way to reduce this guilt is to believe that time spent in these classes is somehow more beneficial to children than the time we know we should be giving them ourselves.
A child’s time does not have to be planned to be meaningful. Remember the lazy days of summer? Some children sleep late and play with the kids across the street until it’s time to come for dinner. However, with the majority of mothers working, fewer children enjoy that idle time now.
Come September, children across the country will finish a full day of kindergarten, only to attend an after-school program until 6 P.M., when a working mom or dad comes to take them home. That’s too much for a five-year-old. Finances, of course, do limit some parents. But let’s be honest with ourselves — our own busy schedules, whatever they involve, are no excuse for burdening a young child’s.

As the new school term draws near, parents find it really tough to reject various after-school enrichment classes for their young children, which greatly dismays many frontline educators. They do this mainly to ease deep guilt from insufficient company; however, children badly need unstructured free time instead of overloaded daily schedules.

Parents find it hard to reject various after-school classes for their young children.
This behavior is mainly driven by their guilt over not spending enough time with their kids.
What children truly need is unstructured free time rather than a packed schedule.
A parent’s own busy life is no justification for burdening a young child.
【点睛】[高分句型1] As the new school term draws near, parents find it really tough to reject various after-school enrichment classes for their young children, which greatly dismays many frontline educators.
[高分句型2] They do this mainly to ease deep guilt from insufficient company; however, children badly need unstructured free time instead of overloaded daily schedules.

Yours sincerely,
Li Hua

Section C (8分)
Directions: Read the passage carefully. Fill in each blank with a proper sentence given in the box. Each sentence can be used only once. Note that there are two more sentences than you need.
