Bike Batman is a 30-year-old married engineer who lives in Seattle, Washington. He’s a cyclist who also buys and sells bikes as a hobby.
About three years ago, he was looking for a bike for his wife. He found one on Craigslist, a website where people list things they want to sell. As he often did, he also looked at Bike Index, a popular website that allows users to register their bikes and post reports when they’re taken. The bike, which he was considering purchasing, clearly matched one reported stolen on Bike Index. Then he called the person who claimed to be the bike’s owner and arranged to meet him — supposedly to complete the sale. When the two men met, Bike Batman told the thief, “You’ve got two options. You can wait until a police officer gets here, or you can just get out of here.” You can imagine what the thief did.
After that first success, Bike Batman developed a safer routine. When he sees questionable bike ads on Craigslist, he cross-references the image with bikes reported on Bike Index. Once he has checked and confirmed it with the owner, he arranges a meet-up with the thief and will call the Seattle police department so that officers can participate in the action. In more than half of the 22 cases in which he has got back and returned bikes, the thieves have been arrested (逮捕). In one case, Bike Batman even helped a family recover a wide range of prized possessions that suspects had stolen during a home burglary.
His nickname came from a discussion with a police officer who suggested he be called “Robin Hood”. Since he wasn’t exactly stealing from the rich and giving to the poor, “Batman” seemed a better fit. The idea of a superhero punishing criminals feels pretty silly to him, but the main reason he continues his work is to keep up Seattle’s reputation as a friendly city.
4. What will Bike Batman first do when discovering a questionable bike?
A. He’ll contact the real bike owner. B. He’ll arrange to meet the thief.
C. He’ll call the police department. D. He’ll look up the bike’s information.
5. What does the underlined word “cross-reference” in paragraph 3 probably mean?
A Compare. B. Upload. C. Provide. D. Beautify.
6. Bike Batman helps find the lost bikes to ______.
A. become famous B. help poor people
C. punish bike thieves D. build a friendly city
7. What can we learn from the passage?
A. The thieves refused to return the bikes.
B. The police failed to perform their duties.
C. Bike Batman began his good deeds by accident.
D. Bike Batman felt silly to see the thieves arrested.

A new study proves when their teenagers cut back on social media use, they seem to feel better about themselves. Helen Thai, a doctoral student in psychology at McGill University, conducted the study. She said the research came from her own personal experiences. “I couldn’t help but compare myself when I was using social media, making me unsatisfied with my self-image.” Thai says. Although she was aware that social media posts often presented images that can be unrealistic in real life, it still had a negative impact on her. So, Thai and a team of researchers decided to test whether reduced time on social media would increase self-confidence in body image.
They hired a few hundred volunteers, aged 14-18, all of whom had experienced signs of anxiety or depression, which could make them easier to be affected by social media. Half of the teens were asked to reduce their social media to 60 minutes a day for three weeks. The other half continued to use social media freely, which averaged about three hours per day. The researchers gave the teens surveys at the beginning and end of the study. It included statements such as “I’m pretty happy about the way I look,” and “I am satisfied with my weight.”
Among the group that cut social media use, the overall score on appearance satisfaction improved from 2.95 to 3.15 on a 5 point scale. “This may seem like a small change, but any change in such a short period of time is striking,” the authors say.
“This research showed promising results that weight and appearance confidence can improve when people cut back on social media use,” wrote Thai. Thai says it’s encouraging that teens were willing to cut back screen time, even for three weeks. It’s also worth experimenting this approach with other groups, such as people with or at risk of eating disorders.
8. What inspired Thai to do the research?
A. Her major. B. Online posts. C. Her experience. D. Social pressure.
9. What do the volunteers have in common?
A. Family background. B. Mental problems. C. Learning abilities. D. Body shape.
10 What did Thai think of the result of their study?
A. It proved their expectation. B. It made them disappointed.
C. It changed their first idea. D. It needed further study.
11. What is a suitable title for the text?
A. Higher confidence, more image satisfaction B. Less social media use, less image anxiety
C. To be a social media addict or not D. Social media, love at first sight
D
Those who are concerned that robots are taking over the world can rest easy — for now. Though the robots have proved useful at performing ordinary tasks, they are not ready for the greatest time. At least that appears to be the case at Japan’s Henn-na Hotel chain where over half of the robot staff are being replaced by humans.
The first location of the unique hotel opened in July 2015 was at Nagasaki’s Huis Ten Bosch Theme Park. The hotel’s owner, Hideo Sawada, promised the hotel to be managed primarily by robots. Guests were greeted and checked-in by a dinosaur robot, while a cute robot called Churi, placed inside each room, provided information about attractions. Not surprisingly, the hotel, recognized in 2016 as the world’s first robot-staffed hotel by Guinness World Records, drew in a large number of curious visitors from all around the world.
But as the years have passed, the hotel’s main draw is becoming less novel and more unsatisfactory. As the robots are “aging”, they are costing more to repair. Among the 283 robots being replaced are the chain’s two dinosaur receptionists. In addition to scaring young guests, they are also unable to photocopy guests’ passports, forcing human employees to step in each time. Also out are the cute Churi robots, which annoyed guests by interrupting their conversations. One guest once complained to The Wall Street Journal that Churi mistook his snoring (鼾声) for a command and kept asking him to repeat his request all night.
Sawada told The Wall Street Journal “Whether the employees hired by the Henn-na Hotel chain have enough competence remains to be seen. When you actually use robots, you may realize there are places where they aren’t needed — or just annoy people.”
While the recently-opened Smart LYZ Hotel and the Fly Zoo Hotel in China are run entirely by robots, with not a human in sight, Sawada may be cutting down on his use of robots.
12. What makes Japan’s Henn-na Hotel unique?
A. Its robot employees. B. Its advanced equipment.
C. Its convenient location. D. Its successful management.
13. What is the author’s purpose with the examples in paragraph 3?
A. To entertain readers. B. To present robots’ disadvantages.
C. To introduce Churi’s functions. D. To prevent people booking the hotel.
14. What does the owner of Japan’s Henn-na Hotel think of his robot staff now?
A. Attractive. B. Costly. C. Pioneering. D. Disappointing.
15. What does the text mainly talk about?
A. Robots’ taking control of the world. B. The rise of robot-staffed hotels.
C. Robot staff’s being fired for inability. D. The world’s first robot-staffed hotel.

The first time we set eyes on “Big Red”, Dad, Mum and I were on our way home. As we passed the Eaton’s department store’s window, we stopped as usual to have a look and bought something that we wanted. The beautifully decorated window display held the best toys ever. Pretty toys all lay beneath a surprisingly fantastic dress. Mum’s eyes were glued to its shining red satin (缎子). “My goodness,” she whispered. “Look at that!” Then, Mum looked down at her own. Mum was forever doing chores, washing laundry and working in the garden. So she always wore house dresses and an apron (围裙) to protect the front.
“What a silly dress!” She shook her head. “Who would want such a big dress?” As we continued down the street, Mum turned her head for one more look. “My goodness! They should display something a person could use!”
Mother’s Day was nearing, and the red dress was soon forgotten. Mum was not the one to spend money on items that were not practical. Choosing a gift for Mother’s Day for her was quite hard. When Dad and I asked, she thought carefully, and then asked for some tea towels, facecloths or a new basin.
On our last trip to town before Mother’s Day, we were driving up Main Street when mother suddenly shouted in surprise: “Look!” She pointed as Dad drove past Eaton’s. “That big red dress is gone,” she said in disbelief. “Who’d be fool enough to buy such a dress?” Mum questioned, shaking her head. I was almost certain that I noticed a trace of eagerness in her voice.
“Why not earn the money myself for this stunning red dress?” I thought to myself. However, I was stuck — which shop would hire an 8-grade student who had no working experience at all? Feeling confused, I approached Dad for his opinion. Dad told me that “Believe in yourself, my sweetie, maybe you could give Eaton’s department store a try.”
注意:
1.续写词数应为120左右;

With determination, I went to the store and asked if they needed a salesgirl.

On the morning of Mother’s Day, Mum received a large box.

A. Compare. B. Upload. C. Provide. D. Beautify.
D 5. A 6. D 7. C

D. Body shape.
10. What did Thai think of the result of their study?
C 9. B 10. A 11. B

根据第一段“So, Thai and a team of researchers decided to test whether reduced time on social media would increase self-confidence in body image.(因此,Thai和一组研究人员决定测试减少在社交媒体上的时间是否会增加对身体形象的自信)”最后一段““This research showed promising results that weight and appearance confidence can improve when people cut back on social media use,” wrote Thai. Thai says it’s encouraging that teens were willing to cut back screen time, even for three weeks.(Thai写道:“这项研究显示了令人鼓舞的结果,当人们减少社交媒体的使用时,体重和外表的信心就会得到改善。”Thai说,青少年愿意减少看屏幕的时间,即使只有三周,这是令人鼓舞的)”可知,Thai认为他们的研究结果证明了他们的预期。故选A。

Sawada told The Wall Street Journal, “Whether the employees hired by the Henn-na Hotel chain have enough competence remains to be seen.
A 13. B 14. D 15. C

“_____ shows athletic ability or strength”为非限制性定语从句,先行词是physical activities,指物,关系词替代先行词在从句中作主语,应用关系代词which引导。故填which。
故填was recognized。
固定搭配a form of...“一种……形式”。故填of。
either...or... 故填or。
SpaceWar!“(hold) by Standford University in the 1970s”作后置定语,hold(举办)是非谓语动词,与其逻辑主语the one之间是被动关系,应用过去分词,表被动、完成。
固定短语an increasing number of...“越来越多的……”。故填an。
“(feature) programs like Street Fighter Ш, StarCraft and Counter-Stike”作后置定语,feature(以……

With determination, I went to the store and asked if they needed a salesgirl. The manager, a kind middle-aged lady, looked at me doubtfully but then smiled warmly. “Well, we usually don’t hire such young girls, but I can see your enthusiasm. Let’s give it a try,” she said. I was overjoyed and promised to do my best. The days passed quickly, and I worked hard, learning about the products and helping customers. Every penny I earned was carefully saved for that stunning red dress. Finally, after weeks of hard work, I had enough money.
On the morning of Mother’s Day, Mum received a large box. She opened it with curiosity, and her eyes widened in surprise as she pulled out the beautiful red dress. “Oh my goodness, where did you get this?” she exclaimed. I stood there, smiling, and said, “I earned it for you, Mum. I wanted you to have something special for Mother’s Day.” She hugged me tightly, tears streaming down her face. “This is the best gift I’ve ever received,” she whispered. That day, Mum wore the red dress with pride, and we all felt the warmth and love that a simple dress could bring. It was a Mother’s Day we would never forget.
