【2024原创】New data showed that deforestation (cutting down trees) in
the Amazon rainforest in Brazil dropped to its lowest in six years. INPE, Brazil's
national space agency (航天局), announced on August 3,2023 that deforestation
declined 66% from the same time in 2022.

INPE used a satellite system to watch the loss of forest in the Amazon. The
agency found that in July 2022, about 1,486.65 square kilometers of rainforest
were cleared. In July 2023, about 499.87 square kilometers of rainforest were
cleared. The numbers from July 2023 were important because July usually meant
the beginning of the season in which the greatest deforestation happened.

Marina Silva, Brazil's environment minister, said that government actions,
such as increased watching of the rainforest and fines (罚款) for people who
cut down trees illegally (非法), have helped slow the loss of forest. The
government has also created more protected areas and allowed indigenous people
(the first people known to have been living in a place) to have the rights to
manage more of the land.

The president of Brazil has promised to end deforestation by 2030. On
August 8 and 9, 2023, he met leaders of seven other rainforest nations: Bolivia,
Colombia, Ecuador, Guyana, Peru, Suriname, and Venezuela. They were expected
to reach an agreement to work together to protect the Amazon from criminals
who are cutting down trees and mining (采矿) for gold illegally.

【2024四川成都二模】E-waste means old electronics like
computers, phones, and TVs that people throw away. When new
electronics come out, many old ones are thrown away. These old
electronics have harmful materials inside. They can hurt the
environment if they get into the ground or water.

Electronics need special metals that are hard to find. Getting these metals
from the earth can cause a lot of pollution. As we make more electronics, these
metals become even harder to find. However, we can recycle these metals from
old electronics instead of digging for new ones.
A group called WEEE is trying to show how serious the e-waste problem is.
WEEE said thrown-away e-waste that has rare (稀有的) metals is worth about
$57 billion each year. Also, UN researchers studied “invisible” e-waste, which
people don't notice much. They found that 1/6 of all e-waste is “invisible” and
worth about $9.5 billion a year. Even though it's called “invisible” e-waste, it's
a lot, weighing about 19.8 billion pounds.

Surprisingly, toys lead the “invisible” e-waste group, according to the study.
In all, toys make up about 35% of the “invisible” e-waste. Every year, about 7.3
billion electronic toys are thrown away worldwide. But the problem is far larger
than just toys. Home alarms, smoke alarms and power tools also lead to
“invisible” e-waste.
WEEE is hoping that as more people and governments pay attention to e-
waste, they will make a much greater effort to make good use of old electronics
before they are thrown away. After all, there are many valuable parts in them.

素材话题:一场关于保护环境的旅行
【2024辽宁大连一模】Having a month off from her job, 24-year-old Stefani
Shamrowicz from America decided to take a trip to help clean up the
environment. She drove across the country and spent 23 days picking up 126
bags of trash (垃圾).
Stefani collected trash anywhere from one to sixteen bags at a time. She
once became discouraged (气馁的) when she felt she wasn't doing enough.
But she continued to just do what she could. Her monumental (值得纪念的)
day was the sixteenth day because she collected 100 bags in total in Ohio.

Stefani shared what she did online and a lot of people got interested. They
donated (捐赠)$10 for a bag to Stefani to clean up in their names. The
person's name was written on a bag and when the bag was filled, Stefani posted
a picture on her Instagram, thanking the person for helping clean up the city she
was in. Some people even cleaned up the city in person and sent Stefani pictures
of bags of trash they picked up. And once when Stefani was walking on the
beach in Florida, and she started picking up trash, two women saw her and
started helping her fill the bag. This surprised Stefani a lot.
Now Stefani is back home and returns to work. But she has so many good
things to say about her special trip.
