Look around you—how many plastic things can you find in your house? Most homes today are almost full of plastics, from water bottles to clothes, chairs, and even computers. Regretfully, so are our rivers and oceans.
According to the report, about 583 billion plastic bottles were produced in 2021. That is 100 billion more than just five years ago. This year, five trillion (万亿) plastic bags were used. That was 160,000 every second. Americans alone use half a million drinking straws (吸管) every day.
However, very little of the plastic that goes into recycling bins (垃圾箱) can make it through the recycling process (过程). Experts (专家) think that only around 9% of plastic is recycled. About 16% is burned for electricity or heat. The rest ends up in landfills or bodies of water.
So how do you make sure plastic things you use are recycled? Begin by making sure the things you put in your recycling bin can be recycled. And in most cases, plastic things can’t be used again if they have more than one kind of plastic in them. That’s because some plastics can’t be mixed together.
How about those plastic things that are able to be recycled at a recycling centre? First, workers make sure that each plastic is clean. After that, the plastic things are made into small pieces. At last, they are melted (融化) and used to create new things. One of the commonly seen products is new plastic bottles. Recycled plastic can also be used to make clothes, pens, and building materials!

For some people, going to a new school or joining a new class may seem afraid. To help solve any worries, you can use the power of hope. It allows people to solve all kinds of problems.
Hope means looking at things in a positive (积极的) way. It’s a way of thinking that builds your view of the world, so you see that things have a positive end.
Hope makes you feel happy and full of energy. Writer Katherine Rundell believes that hope can make you feel you can achieve (实现) anything. She writes in The Book of Hopes that hope is “to believe that the world is so wonderful that giving up would be a mistake”. In this way, hope pushes us to do excellent things and achieve our dreams.
A good way to develop hopeful feelings is to practise positive thinking. Young Minds suggests creating a hope cloud, where you write your hopes down in a cloud shape. DIY started in America in the 1960s. People were worried, because at school and at university, they learnt a lot of academic (专业) skills like new languages, how to write articles and so on, but got very few practical skills. They were worried that they might not be able to use their hands to create things. School and university taught them how to plan things on paper, but they wanted to create something real that they need. Many people also started doing DIY because they wanted to be special. They wanted to make houses, clothes or cars look different from everyone else’s.
In the 1970s, people learnt how to do DIY from books and magazines, and by joining local DIY clubs. By the 1980s, you could buy videos to show you how to do things like building walls or making furniture, and there were TV shows about DIY. In the 1960s and even today, people go to night school after work.
Nowadays we have many more tools to help us take on even bigger challenges (挑战). And it is easy for you to find advice and demonstration (示范) of almost any project (项目) on the Internet.
