Travelling by Tram in Edinburgh
Take the tram (有轨电车), and wind your way from the city centre all the way to the area of Leith.
Picardy Place
Start at the tram stop at Picardy Place, a remodelled public outdoor square at the top of Leith Walk. Look out for the statue of Sherlock Holmes, and have a look at the area where Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, author of the fictional detective’s adventures, was born. If it’s a clear day, walk to Calton Hill for a view of the route down to Leith and the Firth of Forth, as well as city highlights including Arthur’s Seat, the Palace of Holyroodhouse and Edinburgh Castle.
The Foot of the Walk
Get off the tram here, on the northern reaches of Leith Walk, and explore the leafy grounds of Leith Links, originally designed as a golf course and now a public park. Make a plan to return to the area at sundown to check out Leith Depot, a much-loved arts and culture place. As well as offering great-value food and drinks, it stages live music and club nights, including a monthly residency by a well-known radio DJ.
Newhaven
The journey comes to an end with the sea salt in the air and the sound of sea birds overhead. Now an area of Edinburgh, the historic harbour was once an independent fishing village, and shellfish boats can still be seen moving on its waters. Try fish and chips from The Fishmarket, or take shellfish at Loch Fyne.
21 What can tourists visit at Picardy Place during this tour?
A. The outdoor golf course of Leith.

Cesare Mencarini is a teenager. His focus was on math, chemistry and physics.
Cesare’s mother is an architect and his father is an electronic engineer. As a child, Cesare became interested in electronics. He loved to experiment. He learned to program computers and equipment like the Arduino and Raspberry Pi. He also worked with a 3D printer.
After seeing a video about someone building a fusion reactor (核聚变反应堆), Cesare decided he would do something meaningful, too. The school wasn’t so excited about the idea. But Cesare worked to persuade his teachers. Finally, after a complete safety review, and with an extra advisor offering to help out, the school agreed.
Cesare was a strong student, but his regular classes weren’t teaching him how to build a fusion reactor. To learn this, he spent countless hours doing research, looking up information on the Internet, and watching videos. He would read, watch 10 or 15 videos, and then try to solve the problem. He also visited a website where he got advice from scientists with more experience.
Step by step, working long hours with his physics teacher and his advisor, Cesare built the reactor. Last June, at the very end of the school year, the reactor was finished. Over a year has passed since then. Cesare has continued to improve the reactor. He has built complicated equipment to control the pressure and to better see and understand what’s going on inside the reactor.
He’s one of the youngest students to have built such an advanced fusion reactor. But for Cesare, it wasn’t just about the reactor. It was also about learning by doing, and about making connections with other people doing similar things. College is the next stop for Cesare—perhaps in England, perhaps in Italy. No matter where he goes, he’ll probably continue to change people’s ideas about how much young people can achieve.
24. What made Cesare determine to build a fusion reactor?
A. His interest in videos. B. His parents’ influence.
C. The support from his school. D. The inspiration from someone.
25. What does paragraph 4 mainly tell us about Cesare?
A. He depended heavily on useful videos.
B. He worked with experienced scientists,
C. He struggled to prepare for the reactor.
D. He had difficulty in getting information.
26. What is Cesare expected to do in the future?
A. Build another reactor. B. Learn through doing.
C. Make greater progress . D. Contact a famous college.
27. Which can be the best title for the text?
A. A Teenager Made It to a Reactor B. How to Put Theory into Practice
C. Cesare Became an Internet Star D. Videos Act as a Teacher
C
We know that fruits can help to keep our bodies healthy. According to a new study, eating fruits in middle age could also help to reduce the chances of developing depression (抑郁) later in life though we should pay attention to the amount of fruits we eat.
Researchers from China and Singapore wanted to find out more about whether eating fruits and vegetables could have an effect on our mental health. They looked at more than 13,700 Chinese adults who were living in Singapore. The study period began between 1993 and 1998 when the Chinese adults were aged between 45 and 74. Everyone was asked about the fruits and vegetables they liked to eat.14 fruits and 25 types of vegetables were included in the questionnaire (问卷).
The Chinese adults were followed for an average of almost 20 years. By this time, they were aged between 61 and 96. They were asked to complete a questionnaire that could decide whether older people develop depression. At the end of the study period, almost 3,200 people had the feeling of depression.
The researchers found that higher consumption of fruits during middle age was connected with a lower probability of developing depression in late life. Those who ate the most fruits were 29% less likely to develop depression compared to those who ate the least. However, they didn’t find any connection between eating vegetables and developing depression.
It was suggested that the reason for this may be that fruits are usually eaten raw, while vegetables are often cooked. Cooking vegetables might limit the “protective effects” of the nutrients (营养物) in the foods, the researchers suggested, although they said more research was needed.
All types of fruits were found to have an effect, especially oranges, bananas, papayas and watermelons.
28. How is the study conducted?
A. By comparing fruits to vegetables. B. By filling in the questionnaire in a lab.
C. By talking with people living in China. D. By tracking the subjects for a long time.
29. What does the underlined word “consumption” in paragraph 4 probably mean?
A. Contact. B. Eating. C. Advancement. D. Concentration.
30. What do we know about the influence of vegetables on depression?
A. Researchers have got no proof. B. They prove to be better than fruits.
C. They are the key to treating depression. D. Cooking them surely influences mental health.
31. What might be talked about in the following paragraph?
A. Why fruits could decrease depression. B. The correct methods of cooking vegetables.
C. Different fruits recommended by the doctor. D. How vegetables damage nutrients in the foods.
D
Heat waves don’t just make bumblebees (大黄蜂) hot. High temperatures also seem to seriously reduce their sense of smell, which can be very bad for their survival. For bumblebees, being able to smell flowers is a matter of life or death because it helps them find food.
Bumblebees are already known to suffer from climate change. So, an insect ecologist from the University of Würzburg in Germany and her team wanted to understand if heat waves could influence bumblebees’ ability to smell flowers.
The researchers put around 190 bumblebees from two common species into small special rooms for almost three hours at temperatures of 40°C to simulate (模拟) heat waves. Some bumblebees were also put in a dry environment; some had ways to sugary resources; some were given time to recover at normal temperatures for 24 hours after the heat treatment. After the simulated heat waves, the researchers cut off the bumblebees’ antennae (触须), which they use to smell, and measured whether the olfactory sensory neurons (the cells that help them smell) in the antennae could still detect flower scents.
The heat waves reduced the bumblebees’ ability to smell by up to 80 percent. Worker bumblebees, which are all female, were more affected than male bumblebees. Even worse, the antennae of the bumblebees that had 24 hours to cool off still didn’t recover their sense of smell after that time. “That was surprising,” said the insect ecologist. This suggests the bumblebees don’t recover quickly, which means they might have trouble finding food. “It could be one reason why we see so many bumblebee’s population drops,” she added, along with other factors like habitat loss.
“The study seems pretty reliable,” said a bumblebee ecologist from the University of Sussex in Brighton, England, who didn’t take part in the study. “The antennae are quite similar across bee species,” he added. “If bumblebees suffer in this way, I think it’s probable that other bees would too. But we won’t know for sure until someone does research on it.”
32. What problem might bumblebees face in the end because of heat waves?
A. Habitat loss. B. Death risk. C. Food shortage. D. Sensory failure.
33. Why were some bumblebees given 24 hours to recover after the treatment?
A. To count their number and species.
B. To prevent the researchers making mistakes.
C. To make sure they can adapt to the environment.
D. To prove if hot waves damage their sense of smell.
34. What does the insect ecologist think of the research result?
A. It leads to a good method. B. It goes beyond her control.
C. It limits the scientific research. D. It takes researchers’ doubts away.
35. What can we learn about other bees according to the bumblebee ecologist?
A. There is still a lot to study. B. They will suffer from death.
C. They will be well protected. D. More researchers are studying them.

My connection with the farm in Missouri was as deep-rooted as the tree my parents planted years ago. In my early memories, I watched my parents work hard day and night. Their tireless efforts proved their love for our family and the land.
One spring evening, as my father was guiding a tractor (拖拉机) across the field to sow the seeds (播种), the front light suddenly went out, making it hard for us to go on working. My father set off on a long journey to buy a new light. The cold wind blew, but it didn’t weaken his determination to finish the task. “Don’t put off until tomorrow what you can do today. When we meet difficulties, we should find ways to solve them,” he said. With my mother’s support, we replaced the light together and continued working. Then the tractor’s warm light and my father’s determination became guiding lights for me.
Decades passed, and my parents grew old. They still lived in a house on the farm. Later, I started a family and took over the farm. I often told Peter, my son, who was a painter, about the importance of hard work and determination.
One day, Peter visited me. He told me about the challenges of being a painter, like needing to find inspiration regularly. Recently, he hadn’t found any new ideas and was considering giving up. Silently, I led him to the place where the tractor stood. I pointed to the big tree next to the tractor, a reminder of the past. “That tree was very young when your grandparents planted it the day after we fixed the light,” I said. I shared the story with him proudly.
Peter looked at the tractor and the tree, saying, “I can see you from decades ago, a little boy, learning determination and love on this land.” He smiled and said he would stick to his painting career. Only then did I realize I should personally thank my parents for their education, which also benefited my son.

1. 续写词数应150个左右;
Just then, my parents walked out of the house.

W: When did you enjoy student life the most? For me, it was really after high school. When I left my high school, I moved from a small town to a university in London. The new life really opened my eyes. I felt more confident about myself because I started to learn something new, which was all I had never known before. At that time, I was in the capital city, and I was living by myself. I became more independent. I started my university studies, so I really felt like I was working for my future. I loved that feeling because it was something I didn’t have in high school. I made my own decisions and I was finally able to be myself. I really enjoyed that time. I considered that at the time I really found my goal. I was becoming the person I wanted to be and I was doing it this way that I wanted to do it. Therefore, that period of life has played an important role in my life.

A His interest in videos. B. His parents’ influence.
C. The support from his school. D. The inspiration from someone.
25. What does paragraph 4 mainly tell us about Cesare?
A. He depended heavily on useful videos.
B. He worked with experienced scientists,
C. He struggled to prepare for the reactor.
D. He had difficulty in getting information.
26. What is Cesare expected to do in the future?
A. Build another reactor. B. Learn through doing.
C. Make greater progress . D. Contact a famous college.
27. Which can be the best title for the text?
A. A Teenager Made It to a Reactor B. How to Put Theory into Practice
C. Cesare Became an Internet Star D. Videos Act as a Teacher
D 25. C 26. C 27. A

D 29. B 30. A 31. A

根据第二段“They looked at more than 13,700 Chinese adults who were living in Singapore. The study period began between 1993 and 1998 when the Chinese adults were aged between 45 and 74. Everyone was asked about the fruits and vegetables they liked to eat.14 fruits and 25 types of vegetables were included in the questionnaire (问卷).(他们调查了超过13700名居住在新加坡的中国成年人。研究开始于1993年至1998年,当时中国成年人的年龄在45岁至74岁之间。每个人都被问及他们喜欢吃的水果和蔬菜。调查问卷包括14种水果和25种蔬菜)”可知,这项研究是通过长时间跟踪研究对象进行的。故选D项。
【29题详解】
词句猜测题。根据后文“Those who ate the most fruits were 29% less likely to develop depression compared to those who ate the least.(与吃最少水果的人相比,吃最多水果的人患抑郁症的可能性要低29%)”可知,多吃水果的人患抑郁症的可能性要低29%,所以中年时多吃水果与晚年患抑郁症的可能性较低有关,推知consumption应是“摄入,食用”之意,和B项意思相近。
根据第四段“However, they didn’t find any connection between eating vegetables and developing depression.(然而,他们并没有发现吃蔬菜和患抑郁症之间有任何联系)”以及第五段“It was suggested that the reason for this may be that fruits are usually eaten raw, while vegetables are often cooked. Cooking vegetables might limit the “protective effects” of the nutrients (营养物) in the foods, the researchers suggested, although they said more research was needed.(有人认为,造成这种现象的原因可能是水果通常是生吃的,而蔬菜通常是煮熟的。研究人员表示,烹饪蔬菜可能会限制食物中营养物质的“保护作用”,尽管他们表示还需要更多的研究)”可知,研究人员表示并没有发现吃蔬菜和患抑郁症之间有任何联系,但是还需要更多的研究,所以他们还没有证据。故选A项。
故选A项。

B 33. D 34. D 35. A

根据第一段“Heat waves don’t just make bumblebees (大黄蜂) hot. High temperatures also seem to seriously reduce their sense of smell, which can be very bad for their survival. For bumblebees, being able to smell flowers is a matter of life or death because it helps them find food.(热浪不仅会让大黄蜂变热。高温似乎也严重降低了它们的嗅觉,这对它们的生存非常不利。对于大黄蜂来说,能够闻到花的气味是生死攸关的问题,因为这可以帮助它们找到食物)”可知,由于热浪降低了大黄蜂的嗅觉,这意味着它们可能找不到食物,所以大黄蜂最终可能面临死亡的风险。故选B项。
【33题详解】
推理判断题。根据第三段“Some bumblebees were also put in a dry environment; some had ways to sugary resources; some were given time to recover at normal temperatures for 24 hours after the heat treatment. After the simulated heat waves, the researchers cut off the bumblebees’ antennae (触须), which they use to smell, and measured whether the olfactory sensory neurons (the cells that help them smell) in the antennae could still detect flower scents.(一些大黄蜂也被放在干燥的环境中;有些有办法获得含糖资源;一些在热处理后24小时在常温下恢复。在模拟的热浪之后,研究人员切断了大黄蜂用来嗅觉的触角,并测量了触角中的嗅觉感觉神经元(帮助它们嗅觉的细胞)是否仍然可以探测到花香)”可知,研究人员给一些大黄蜂24小时恢复,是为了验证热浪是否会损害它们的嗅觉,并观察它们是否能在正常温度下恢复嗅觉。故选D项。
【34题详解】
推理判断题。根据第四段““That was surprising,” said the insect ecologist. This suggests the bumblebees don’t recover quickly, which means they might have trouble finding food. “It could be one reason why we see so many bumblebee’s population drops,” she added, along with other factors like habitat loss.(昆虫生态学家说:“这太令人惊讶了。”这表明大黄蜂不会很快恢复,这意味着它们可能很难找到食物。“这可能是我们看到这么多大黄蜂数量下降的原因之一,”她补充说,此外还有栖息地丧失等其他因素)”可知,研究结果让昆虫生态学家知道了黄蜂数量下降的原因,消除了研究人员的疑虑。故选D项。
【35题详解】
推理判断题。根据最后一段““The study seems pretty reliable,” said a bumblebee ecologist from the University of Sussex in Brighton, England, who didn’t take part in the study. “The antennae are quite similar across bee species,” he added. “If bumblebees suffer in this way, I think it’s probable that other bees would too. But we won’t know for sure until someone does research on it.”(“这项研究似乎相当可靠,”英国布莱顿萨塞克斯大学的一位大黄蜂生态学家说,他没有参加这项研究。“各种蜜蜂的触角都非常相似,”他补充说。“如果大黄蜂以这种方式受苦,我认为其他蜜蜂很可能也会这样。但在有人对此进行研究之前,我们无法确定。”)”可知,根据大黄蜂生态学家的说法,其他蜜蜂很可能也会这样,但是还有很多东西需要研究。故选A项。

根据前文“However, sometimes you find they are so boring! It can be hard to focus on a lecture when your mind wanders.(然而,有时候你会发现它们太无聊了!
根据前文“Try to be more aware of what you’re doing when you stop paying attention.(当你不集中注意力的时候,试着更清楚地意识到你在做什么)”以及后文“Either way, put the distracting item away so you’re not tempted to focus on it.(无论哪种方式,把分散注意力的东西放在一边,这样你就不会被诱惑去关注它了)”可知,前文建议需要意识到是什么让你分心,后文提到把分散注意力的东西放在一边,所以D项“Maybe you’re playing with your phone or pencil.(也许你在玩手机或铅笔)”是讲述具体让你分心的例子,符合此处主题。故选D项。
设空位于段首,为本段中心句,根据后文“Writing down important parts of the lesson can help you focus on what the teacher is saying. Plus, you can use these notes later to study and do well in your next test! 67. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

Just then, my parents walked out of the house. I went straight to embrace them warmly and said, “Thank you for instilling in me the importance of hard work and determination.” My mother smiled, and my father gave me a reassuring pat on the back. Peter observed us, feeling a sense of inspiration. “Grandpa, Grandma, your story has sparked new ideas for my paintings,” he remarked. My parents’ eyes shone with pride and joy. We stood there, united by a deep connection across generations, grounded in love, perseverance, and shared memories.
Inspired by his grandparents’ stories, Peter began a new artistic journey. He devoted his days to sketching the farm, capturing the spirit of hard work and determination. After months of effort, Peter completed a series of paintings that showed our family’s journey. His artworks were displayed in a local gallery, earning widespread praise and admiration. Peter’s success was a reflection of the values handed down through generations. The story of the light was more than a memory. It symbolized our family’s enduring bond, which was growing stronger like the tree that had weathered countless seasons.
