Passage1(23-24九年级上·陕西咸阳·期末)
When Sammie Vance was just 8, she thought about a question: What breaks your heart? “For me, it’s seeing people who need a friend,” the ninth grader from Indiana, US, told a magazine, “I’ve been lonely myself, I don’t want others to feel that way.”
Soon after a summer camp, Vance learned about buddy benches (伙伴长椅). These benches are seats at a school playground. A lonely child can sit on it, which shows that he or she is in need of a friend.
She loved this idea. “This would be really cool to have at my school,” Vance said. Then she got into action immediately. She collected 725 kilograms of bottle caps and found a company to turn the caps into benches for her school. According to Vance, these recycled benches cost much less than regular park benches and are good for the environment.
Vance collected more for benches at other schools too. She also made a Facebook page for others to follow her journey and make bottle cap donations. She was surprised that her small project had an influence on people around the world. She even received bottle caps from Germany, Australia and Israel.

Have you heard of the Moser lamp? It is a lamp (灯) that uses no electricity. It was invented by Alfredo Moser, a Brazilian engineer, and it brings light to homes and small businesses in some poor countries.
The Moser lamp is made of a plastic bottle (塑料瓶) filled with water and a little bleach (漂白剂). It is fixed into a round hole in the top of a building, so that the upper part appears in the sun and the lower part hangs down into the room. The sunshine falls on the upper part of the bottle and makes the water produce light, so the bottom of the bottle shines like an electric bulb (灯泡).
Although it doesn’t work at night, it is widely used in many very poor and crowded areas. In those areas, houses often have small windows or none at all. Even during the day, the room is dark. And the lamp helps a lot.
This idea came up because of a power cut (停电). That day, Moser and his friends talked about how to live without electricity. They imagined if they were lost in the wild, how could they give the alarm? One suggested using a lens (透镜) to focus the sunshine and start a fire. If they didn’t have a lens, they could find a plastic bottle with water. This would act as a lens. This idea came into Moser’s head. Almost by accident, he developed the lamp.

DNA is the whole “map” of the human body. It is something that all humans have, and it tells the body what to do. DNA is the reason why we look like our parents, because we get some of their DNA to make our own.
People have been trying to understand the human body for a long time. In 1860, Mr. Mendel discovered why we look similar to other people in our family. It is because of small things called “genes” in our body. In 1953, two scientists, Watson and Crick, found out that those small parts are real messages. They are written in the DNA with a special language.
In 1961, another two scientists found the first “word” that they could understand in that language. It shows how DNA tells the cell (细胞) to build its parts. So far, scientists have found all the words in the DNA map, but we do not understand what they all do. By under standing what just one “word” means, we can help to save people from several illnesses.
Most people hope that this will help to make better medicine to help sick people. As a student, we must have homework every day. How do we deal with our homework? When do we usually finish our homework? Here is some advice for us to finish our homework well.
Doing homework should be the first thing, and we should do our homework as soon as we get home even if we have after-school activities. At the same time, it is fine to allow for a snack break and also to allow for stretching (伸展) breaks.
We should always remember that it is our duty to do our homework. Don’t depend on others for help. Please try to find the answer ourselves because we will learn much more that way.
When we have a question, especially something about a science or maths, don’t always turn to our teacher! It is a good idea to try to find the answer ourselves. If this doesn’t work, we can also look at our textbooks carefully. They may help us understand the problem.
Finally while doing homework, don’t think about or do other things. Keep working. Setting a time limit (限制) often helps with this. Different ages decide different amounts of time. 10—15 minutes is good for a child that’s aged 6—8. A time of 20—30 minutes is about right for a child aged 9—12. Kids can keep studying for 30—45 minutes at the ages of 13—15. This, of course, depends on your ability to pay attention and stay on tasks.

What causes the Northern Lights? Like all the natural light on the earth, they come from the sun. Hello, everyone. It’s my pleasure to talk about “Great People in My Mind”. I am Zhao Mengjia from Class 8, Grade 7. Today I’d like to talk about one of my favourite poets—Li Bai.
Li Bai was born in 701. He was also given the name “Taibai”, which meant “Venus (金星)” in ancient Chinese. Legend (传说) says that before Li Bai was born, his mother dreamt that Venus fell into her arms. Some people believed that Li Bai was a god. When Li Bai was five years old, his family moved to a town in today’s Sichuan province.
It is said that in his childhood, he was very fond of playing and afraid of difficulties, and made slow progress in his studies. There is an educational story about Li Bai I’d like to share with all of you. Although it is simple, I think we students can learn a lot from it.
Grinding an Iron Rod into a Needle (针)

A mind map is basically a tool that connects information around a central subject. It can help you make a bank of knowledge to solve problems. A student recently said, “I thought mind mapping would take a lot of time to do but in fact it saves me time. I don’t have to read my notes over and over again.”
How to make a mind map? Now follow these steps for making wonderful mind maps.
Start in the center of a page. Why? Because starting the center lets your brain spread out in all directions and express itself more freely and naturally.
Use a picture for your central idea. Why? Because a picture is worth a thousand words and helps you use your imagination. A central picture is more interesting. It helps get your attention and makes you work more excitedly!
Connect your main branches (分支)to the central picture and connect your second-and third-level branches to the first and second levels, etc. Why? Because your brain works by connection. It likes to connect two, or three, or four things together. If you connect the branches, you will understand and remember a lot more easily.
Use one key word every line. Why? Because every single key word can make you learn more clearly and easily.
Use pictures as many as possible. Why? Because each picture, just like the central picture, is also worth a thousand words. So, if you have 10 pictures in your mind map, they are already worth 10, 000 words of notes.
Try to use more colors. Why? Because colors are as exciting to your brain as pictures. Color adds great energy to your creative thinking, and is fun!
