Japanese researchers have invented a special kind of electric chopsticks recently. 1 So the chopsticks can help people take in less salt while they are enjoying delicious food.
2 The chopsticks are connected to a small device (装置) worn by the eater. Weak electricity carries sodium ions (钠离子) from food through the chopsticks to the mouth. They’ll create a sense of saltiness in the mouth. As a result, the salty taste increases by 1.5 times. The traditional diet in Japan is salty. 3 That is twice the amount (数量) one should take in according to the World Health Organization (WHO).
Too much salt intake may lead to high blood pressure and some other illnesses.
4 “If we try to avoid taking in too much salt in the usual ways, we need to delete a lot of our favorite food from our food list. Or we have to eat tasteless food,” the researcher said. Now, the electric chopsticks provide us with another way to take in less salt.

Reynolds started the Dot Club, and he encourages kids and grown-ups to join. 9 All you have to do is to draw a dot and sign your name. Reynolds offered three rules: “Be creative. Help those around you to be creative, especially those who can’t draw. And use your talents to make the world a better place.”

Hi, my name is Ben. My family—that’s Mom, Dad and I—live in Broome in Western Australia. Western Australia is about 80 times larger than Italy, but only 1.5 million people live there.
11 It has a population of about 12,000. It’s right on the coast and is known for its famous Cable Beach, which is 20 km long.

We don’t go swimming from October to March because there may be box jellyfish in the water. The box jellyfish is one of the most dangerous jellyfish. 13 If you are attacked by one, then the best thing is to pour vinegar (醋) over the area of your body where you are hurt. That’s why we always take a bottle of vinegar with us.
14 A year ago I went camping in the bush with my friend Bill and his dad. We wanted to do some fishing and set up camp about 20 meters from a river. Suddenly, at 3 o’clock in the morning, we felt something pulling on our tent. Bill’s father told us to get up and we quickly got out of the tent and ran to the car, which was only 10 meters away.

Why does it seem that some parents are not so friendly in their children’s eyes?

They worry about your choice of friends, the food you eat, your work at school, how much sleep you get, etc. 27 They want you to grow up healthily and happily.

The Bird Mask
Today, doctors know a lot about how to stop germs (病菌) from spreading. They suggest people cover their mouths when they cough. 41
However, people haven’t always known about germs. For many years, even doctors didn’t really understand how illnesses spread. 42 Some doctors even tried dressing like birds.
In 1619, the French doctor, Charles de Lorme, invented a special uniform. He hoped it could protect doctors who were treating plague (瘟疫) patients. The uniform had a long coat, gloves, boots (靴子) and a hat.
The doctors also carried sticks so they wouldn’t have to touch the patients. The most special part of the uniform was the mask (面具).
43 It had a beak (鸟嘴) that was about 15 cm long. There were also two eyeholes cowered in glass and two nostril (鼻孔) holes.
At that time, doctors believed the plague was spread by bad air. Any air that had a bad smell was dangerous. 44 They believed this could stop them from breathing the bad air and they wouldn’t get sick because of the plague.
Did it work? Well, not really. Certainly the germs sometimes traveled through the air, and the flowers weren’t able to stop them. 45
Some forms of plague only spread through certain animals such as mice. The doctors’ uniform helped to protect them from this danger. However, largely the coat, gloves, boots and hat did the job, not the bird mask.

Passage10(22-23九年级上·山东济南·期末)
Most of us grew up reading fairy tales that start with “Once upon a time” and end with “the princess and prince lived happily ever after”. 46 But in the eyes of two Italian writers, Favilli and Cavallo, this is what’s been wrong with children’s stories for years.
“Children’s books have always remained the same since we were children,” Cavallo said. And a study also found while 80 percent of male (男性) characters in most popular children’s books have a job, only 18 percent of female (女性) characters do.
47 Good Night Stories for Rebel (叛逆) Girls is an “anti- princess” collection. It gives young girls role models of their own to admire. The first book was published in December 2019, and the second one came out on Feb 28, 2021. 48 To the surprise of children’s book writers, every one of them has a job or professional ambition (抱负). Many “characters” in the book are well-known female stars that children look up to.
49 Since it’s not really seen as positive (积极的). But being rebellious is actually being independent, which many of today’s girls need to develop. It is important to be independent for girls, 50

As spring is coming, we can easily find a large number of people who are doing sports. 51 Everything is hard at first. More importantly, how can you develop an everyday habit and stick to it?
Set a goal
Before getting started, ask yourself “Why do I want to exercise?” 52 Sports can also bring people both physical and mental health. Also, it can train spirit and develop personality. If you have a goal in mind, it will be much easier to say no to junk food and yes to daily exercise.

Find a partner
54 However busy you are, it’s impossible to refuse your friend’s invitation since the promise you made to each other shouldn’t be broken easily. Besides, exercising together with a friend can reduce the tiredness and increase the chance to achieve your goal as well.
Look for small ways to exercise
Setting aside a whole morning for exercise is a good idea. 55 For example, do not take the lift when going home and take the stairs (楼梯) instead. Or get up from your desk during your break between classes to do stretches (拉伸). These simple physical activities will certainly pay off.

The right way to breathe (呼吸) during exercise
Exercising is great for your health—everyone knows this. However, simply exercising isn’t enough. It needs to be done properly.
While exercising, making sure your breathing is correct is very important. Naturally, we breathe through our nose. 61 Not really.
Breathing through your nose has its advantages. Your nose hair acts like an air filter (过滤器). Breathing through your nose also warms and moistens (使……湿润) the air. However, when you exercise, you should always make sure that you are taking in enough oxygen (氧气). 62 During more heavy exercise, such as running, it is better to breathe through your mouth. 63
However, most people usually take quicker breaths while doing any heavy exercise. This is one of the most common mistakes that people make while exercising. 64 This can cause dizziness (头晕) and other health problems.
In fact, while doing exercise like running, one should breathe in a 3:2 ratio (比率). This means that for the first three steps, the person should be inhaling (吸气) deeply. For the next two steps, the person should be exhaling (呼气) fully. In this way you can take in the largest amount of oxygen.
65 While we often breathe through our nose, breathing through our mouth is a good choice as well. Sometimes people use both their nose and mouth to breathe. While doing any exercise, your breaths should be deep, rather than quick. This will help you to burn more fat and keep you fitter.
A.Let’s go over the basic points one more time.
B.You can breathe through your nose while doing lighter exercise like yoga.
C.Quicker breathing is not a proper way of breathing.
D.However, do you know the right way to breathe during exercise?
E.By doing so, you can take in a higher amount of air and thus oxygen.
F.But when you exercise, is breathing through the nose always the best choice?
Passage14(23-24九年级上·山东青岛·期末)
A baby giraffe without spots
Tall, long-necked giraffes generally all have spot (斑点). 66 Just like no two humans have the same fingerprints, each giraffe has its own special pattern of spots—unless, of course, it doesn’t have any spots.
On July 31st, a very unusual baby giraffe was born at a zoo in Tennessee, the US. The baby giraffe is a reticulated giraffe (纹长颈鹿). Its hair is light brown. The giraffe was born perfectly healthy. 67
Zoo director David Bright said, “This is very rare. The last time this happened was in 1972 in Japan.” Now, the baby giraffe is believed to be the only spotless giraffe in the world. 68
Mr. Bright said, “She’s very sweet.”
A giraffe’s pattern of spots is created when the animal is still growing inside its mother. 69 Mr. Bright said, “The new giraffe would not have lived very long, if she had been born in the wild. She could be a prime target for hunting (狩猎) because she’s so unusual.”
70 Thirty-five years ago, there were around 36,000 wild reticulated giraffes. Now, the number has been cut by more than 50%. Around 16,000 reticulated giraffes remain in the wild, according to a report. The zoo is hoping to use the baby spotless giraffe to draw attention to efforts to protect giraffes.

As Earth is getting hotter, the world’s glaciers are melting (融化). In the end, they could be gone. As it affects the land, mountains are “taller” than before. 71
Scientists looked into Earth’s ice ages for answers. The last ice age happened 16,000 years ago, but the land once under the ice is still changing. The change is called the glacial isostatic adjustment (水川均衡调整). Imagine that you lie down on a soft mattress (垫子) and then get up. 72 It needs a while before it relaxes back.
73 When huge glaciers“sit” on Earth, the land is under pressure. An ice sheet (冰盖) about 800 meters thick may leave a “pit” (坑) about 270 meters deep. So when the glaciers go, the “pit” begins to go up.
74 Recent researches suggest that land in southeast Alaska is rising about 3cm a year. It’s a lot—even local families can see the difference, said The New York Times. On the good side, they have “new” land and more living areas. However, the environment is in trouble. 75 They easily dry up, and animals in the water find it hard to live. Researchers are also worried that this may bring challenges to fishermen, as raising fish in these areas could become more difficult.

Passage16(23-24九年级上·山东烟台·期末)
You might be looking for new ways to improve your understanding of something you are studying. 76
One way to help you reach these goals is to try teaching—not as a job, but as a way to improve your own learning.
Researchers and educators have been interested in the link (联系) between teaching and learning for quite some time.
77
More recent studies have looked at the link between teaching and memory.
78
These findings suggest that when students actually teach the content (内容) of a lesson, they develop a deeper and more continuous understanding of the material than from simply preparing to teach.
79
A 2018 study suggests that teaching may help your learning because you have to remember the information you have learned as you continue to teach.
The basic idea is that if you want to improve your memory of what you have learned, you have to practice remembering that information.
The good news is that there are many ways that you can improve your learning by teaching.
One way might be to teach your family or friends about something that you are learning. For example, you could teach your parents about English grammar or vocabulary.
You could also try teaching a younger person—perhaps a cousin, brother or sister. Try to make your lessons simple and clear, and ask them what they do not understand.
Another idea is to imagine yourself describing a lesson to someone, or to write the lesson down.
A final idea for those who like technology: You could record video of yourself teaching information. 80
Give teaching a try and let us know if it improves your learning!
根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有一项为多余选项。

At first, I did not know what the word “exam” meant. Later, I knew an exam was a kind of competition. In competitions, there are always winners and losers. As I grew up, I got to know competition well. 83 .
Each time I saw children playing games, and heard their laughter, I wished I were that age again. However, 84 , “You must work very hard in order to have a good future.” So I picked up my pen and began to study hard again.

The Mole brushed, and he cleaned the floors and the walls. He stood on the chairs to wash the top of the cupboards, he got under the beds. He cleaned and he cleaned, until his back and arms ached with tiredness.
It was springtime, and the smell and the sound of spring were everywhere, even in the Mole’s dark little house under the ground. 91 So it was not surprising that the Mole suddenly put down his brushes and said, “Oh bother (恼怒)!” and then, and he ran out of his house and began to dig his way upwards to the sun.
92 ” Up we go!Up we go!” he said to himself, until at last his nose came out into the sunlight, and he found himself in the warm grass of a field.
“ This is fine!” said the Mole.” This is better than cleaning!” The sunshine was warm on his back and the air was filled with the songs of birds. 93 Here and there he went, through the fields and the woods, looking and smelling and listening. Everywhere animals and birds were busy, looking for food, making new homes for the spring. The Mole enjoyed it all.
94 He had never seen a river before in his life——this wonderful bright shining thing, which danced its way in and out of the shadows under the trees. It was never still for a minute, hurrying and laughing and talking to itself.
And at once, the Mole was in love with it. 95 At last he sat down on the grass and looked across the river to the bank opposite.

Children need time to stand and stare. They should be allowed to get bored so that they can develop their ability to be creative.
96 However, research shows that it may hamper (妨碍) the development of their imagination, while boredom can give them opportunities to develop creativity.
Boredom often goes along with loneliness, but a writer named Meera Syal said boredom had helped her in developing her mind. 97 Having few things to do, Syal often talked with her neighbors. She also tried to do things like learning to bake cakes. “But importantly, I thought and wrote a lot, because I was bored,” Syal said. She kept a diary, filling her time with short stories and poems she made up.
Grace Perry, an artist, grew up in a family with little money. She enjoyed herself by making up stories, drawing pictures for her stories and reading many books in the library. Bored but free, she spent hours looking out of the window, watching the changing clouds and seasons. 98 She became creative, because she could think freely.
Usually, when children have nothing to do, they would turn on the TV, the computer, or the phone. 99 But they need to have time to think about their experiences through play or just watching the world around them.
100 On the other hand, the TV or phone may cut short the thinking process. That can be harmful to the development of creativity. “For developing the ability to be creative,” Dr. Belton advised, “perhaps we need to stand and stare, and stay offline from time to time.”

Today, fireworks are able to create different shapes. 31 People from all over the world use Chinese fireworks to make the night sky colorful. Most of them are produced in Hunan and Jiangxi provinces. With a long history in China, firework production used to be one of the most dangerous industries. 32 In Liuyang, Hunan, modern machines now work in all of its firework factories. With them, there are fewer factory accidents. 33
The Liuyang government has used an intelligent system (智能系统) at firework factories to help find out risks before an accident happens. 34 In Dayao, a town in Liuyang, every firework factory has intelligent cameras. For safe production, only one worker can get into some areas in the factories, and there will be warning messages if more than one person appears in those areas. Parents with high expectations (期望) for their children are nothing new to Chinese kids. However, people often don’t realize that children also have expectations of their parents. 36
China Youth & Children Research Center did a survey in 2018 on this topic in the United States, Japan, South Korea and China. It showed that 83.8 percent of Chinese children want to be friends with their parents.
But the reality (事实) is different. 37 Respecting one’s elders and the concept of hierarchy (等级观念) are preventing parents from becoming friends with their children.
38 As children, what can you do to create a pleasant atmosphere (氛围) at home and make friends with your parents?
Act like an adult.
If you want your parents to give you more freedom (自由), you should show them that you’re ready to be treated differently. For example, learn to use self-control. Show them that you can manage (安排) your time well.

A.The bird mask helped to protect the doctors from this danger.
B.Many doctors still got sick by breathing through the nostril holes in their masks.
C.The mask made the doctors look like birds.

People who learn to be grateful(感激的) are happier than those who aren’t grateful. People feel pleased with what they have instead of complaining about what they don’t have. They see each day as a new chance for happiness, rather than another challenge to take on. 116
Take a minute to be thankful for your life.
117 At school, step outside for a short walk to breathe the fresh air and think about how thankful you are for the chance to take a break and feel the sun. At home, the thing you’re thankful for can be your morning cup of milk or the soft pillow you sleep on at night.

Did you throw something away today? The answer for most people would be yes. But where does our rubbish go?
131 Every day, workers come to take the rubbish from our rubbish bins. They put it into a big truck and carry it to landfills (垃圾填埋场), At the landfills people sort (分类) the rubbish. They recycle some, burn some and bury (埋) some of it underground. The more rubbish gets recycled, the better. It means that less rubbish ends up in landfills. Landfills can also be bad for the environment.
So many Chinese cities encourage everyone to sort out their rubbish before throwing it away. Put the food in one bag. Put the plastic bottles in another. 132 In this way, we can help save a lot of time, money and energy for all of society.
133 So they have higher recycling rates (比率). In Sweden, only 4 percent of household waste ends up inland fills every year. In Japan, people recycle nearly 50 percent of all rubbish.
There is still a lot to do when it comes to rubbish sorting in China. People in the country make about 300 million tons of rubbish every year. 134 The rest of it ends up in landfills. Most of it is unsorted. The good news is that many cities are trying different ways to make things better. 135 If people sort out their rubbish, they’ll get We Chat bonus points. They can exchange the bonus points for shopping cards!
A.Many foreign countries have good sorting systems.
B.But they only recycle less than a quarter of the waste.
C.It doesn’t just sit in the rubbish bin.
D.Beijing will start a new program to improve rubbish sorting next year.
E.And throw them in the right rubbish bins.
