Passage1(23-24九年级上·山东烟台·期末)
We spent a day in the country and picked a lot of flowers. Our car was full of flowers inside. On the way home, we had to stop at traffic lights, and there my wife saw the bookshelf.
It stood outside a furniture (家具) shop. “Buy it,” she said. “We’ll carry it home on the roof-rack (车顶行李架). I have always wanted one like that.”
What could I do? Ten minutes later I was twenty dollars poorer, and the bookshelf was tied on to the roof-rack. It was tall and narrow (狭窄的), quite heavy, too.
As it was getting darker, I drove slowly. Other drivers seemed more polite than usual that evening. The police even stopped traffic to let us through. I thought carrying furniture was a good idea.
After a time my wife said, “There’s a long line of cars behind. Why don’t they overtake (超车)?”
Just at that time a police car did overtake. The two officers inside looked at us seriously when they went past. But then, with a kind smile they asked us to follow their car through the busy traffic. The police car stopped at our village church. One of the officers came to me.
“Right, sir,” he said. “Do you need any more help now?”
I didn’t quite understand. “Thanks, officer,” I said. “You’ve been very kind. I lived just down the road.”
He was looking at our things: first at the flowers, then at the bookshelf. “Well, well,” he said and laughed. “It’s a bookshelf you’ve got there! We thought it was something else.”

One year, there was a drought (干旱) and the corn didn’t grow well. The two brothers collected their small harvest (收获) and stored the grain (谷物) in their barns (谷仓).

Though not that happy, Rick gave it a try. After creating many paintings, he took his artwork to his mom.
“Tell me, Rick. What are these paintings about?”

Rick’s mom took Rick by her side and told him, “Don’t you see, Rick? You’re getting so angry but you never try to understand why.” Then she explained carefully, “All the people you were angry at did nothing wrong. Underwater Research
Fourteen-year-old Miguel Diaz talks about an exciting science project
Last month I got the chance to take part in an underwater research project. The project was in an area of the Gulf of Mexico called the Flower Gardens. A team of professional researchers, led by the scientist Dr. Matt Phillips, was trying to learn more about the fish and all kinds of creatures that live in this part of the sea. “You shouldn’t be playing the game in the first place.”

Passage16(23-24九年级上·山东枣庄·期末)
Anna couldn’t wait to start her first day in the new school. However, when she first walked past the students in the school, her excitement turned to fear, and then to loneliness (孤独) over the next few days. “Why didn’t anyone say ‘hi’ to me or invite me to his or her lunch table? Is it because of my clothes or my hair?” she wondered. Almost every day during the first week, Anna stayed alone, thinking that there must have been something wrong with her or that nobody saw her at all!

When Anna realized this, she started talking to her classmates. Guess what happened? It really worked. She had made two friends by the end of the month. Sometimes children need extra (额外的) help to learn at school. In some schools in England, some volunteers work with children who have difficulty in reading. The volunteers spend time with them, away from their class, to help them learn to love books and enjoy school. These children can then become more confident about school and learning.
Lorna is a 6-year-old student. This is a report from Mrs. Snow who has been visiting her at school.
When I first started working with Lorna, she was very shy and didn’t really enjoy reading. Her class teacher told me she was very quiet in class.
During our lessons we spent lots of time reading books together. We also played word games to help with her spelling and writing. As time went on, Lorna began to relax and became more confident. She realized that reading and writing could be lots of fun.
Lorna even wrote a book by herself about Beauty and the Beast. She also drew some lovely pictures to explain it.
Her class teacher is pleased with how well Lorna is doing. Lorna proudly tells her classmates about what she has done in each lesson with me. I think they all want to join in as well!

Instruments Brought Back to Life!
Richard Blackson, the director of an US art gallery, visited 23 schools in Philadelphia. He found a room full of broken musical instruments (乐器) at each school. The schools said the instruments had been there for a long time. But Blackson also found that 1,000 of the broken instruments could be repaired.
In fact, many public schools in the United States don’t have enough musical instruments because of budget cuts (预算削减). Several students often have to share one instrument. Blackson started a project called “Symphony (交响乐) for a Broken Orchestra (管弦乐团)”, aiming to repair broken instruments for students.
To raise money, he reached out to David Lang, a Pulitzer Prize-winning US musician. The musician Lang came up with the idea of writing a symphony for the broken instruments. On November 23,400 students and professional musicians held a concert. They performed Lang’s Symphony for a Broken Orchestra, which shares its name with the repair project.
People can now go online to see profiles (简介) of all of the broken instruments and donate money to “adopt (领养)” one or more instruments. The project has raised over $237,000 (1.5 million yuan) so far, The New York Times reported. In the fall semester of this year, Philadelphia students will receive the repaired instruments.
High school student Evelyn Mitka, 16, played a violin that was missing a string (弦) during the concert. She told Dogo News that the performance taught her a lesson. “You can learn music in an untraditional way.”

Passage19(23-24九年级上·山东德州·期末)
Is there anyone who likes to do chores (家务活)? Should children help out around the house? For some children, doing chores may be the last thing they want to do. And for many parents, getting their children to help out around the house can be a real headache. But one Malaysian (马来西亚) mother found a creative way.
Nurafiza is the mother of two sons. She came up a reward system (奖励体系) for her sons at home. She made a list of chores for her children and gave them money for each task they had completed. The list of chores included cleaning up the house and putting away their toys for RM50 each, studying for RM150, and even not fighting with each other for RM10 to RM15. When her boys had trouble sleeping, she rewarded them with RM50 for going to bed. Murafiza also opened a “mini-mart” at home for her children to spend the money in. Her three-year-old and six-year-old sons could buy snacks from her mini-mart which was open from 10am to 8pm. The money she gave to her children was not real money.
Because of this system, both of Nurnfiza’s children are now more willing to do their chores. Her post has got over 15,000 likes and has been shared over 27,000 times. Many parents have started to imitate her. They use the same way to discipline (管教) their children.
In fact, doing chores is important for children’s development. First, chores teach children basic life skills, like cooking, cleaning and so on. Second, doing chores is a good way to exercise children’s bodies. It helps them stay healthy. Third, doing chores creates opportunities (机会) for parents and children to be together. Last term, some firefighters came to our school and talked to us about something important: Fire safety!
The firefighters told us all about how fires start and what we can do to stop them. They showed us the cool clothes and hats that firefighters wear, and they even let us try them on! We looked just like real firefighters!
However, the most important thing they wanted us to remember was what we must do in the middle of a fire. They told us to always stay low to the ground and crawl (爬行) to the nearest door. They also showed us how to use a fire extinguisher (灭火器) and call for help.
At the end of the visit, the firefighters gave us a test to see how much we learned. I was so proud of myself because I got all the answers right!

I was at the shop last night and saw a homeless woman with a trolley (手推车) full of her belongings. She was sitting inside the shop to keep warm. I went up to her and tried to give her money for something to eat, but she refused. She explained that if she had too much money on her, other homeless people might steal it while she was sleeping.
I explained that I just wanted to help her and asked if I could buy her something warm. Again, she said no. She thanked me and said how thankful she was that I could offer help. Can you paint? Do you like painting? What is the difference between painting and drawing?
Rick was a young boy who was angry at everything around him. To calm Rick down, his mom came home with a canvas (画布) and paint. “Whenever you feel bad about something, paint it instead of getting angry.”
Though not that happy, Rick gave it a try. After creating many paintings, he took his artwork to his mom.
“Tell me, Rick. What are these paintings about?”
“The first is about how some kids show off their new clothes. The next is about my teacher who always tells me about how I’m doing things wrong. And the last painting is about how one of my schoolmates said I should change my attitude (态度). They all make me so angry.”
Rick’s mom took Rick by her side and told him, “Don’t you see, Rick? You’re getting so angry but you never try to understand why.” Then she explained carefully, “All the people you were angry at did nothing wrong. The kids were showing off their good clothes but never laughed at you for being poor. Your teacher scolded you but that was because you caused trouble in class. And your schoolmate was only trying to help you correct your mistakes.”
“Next time you get angry, take a deep breath and walk away for a couple of seconds. And when you come back, talk to the person you’re angry at. You might calm down in this way.”

The Flower Gardens are a long way from the shore (海岸) and we spent three days on a boat.
The team used a piece of underwater equipment called a Remotely Operated Vehicle (ROV) to collect information. The ROV could measure (测量) water depth and temperature and it also had a camera that sent live film back to the boat. The ROV was great fun. It was controlled by a computer on the boat and I was allowed to operate it a few times.
However, the thing I enjoyed most was diving (潜水) into the water. At first, I was quite frightened—mainly because I couldn’t see land in any direction. But as soon as I jumped into the water, I wasn’t afraid anymore. It was amazing to see the colorful fish swimming around and I could see all the way to the Flower Gardens, which are almost 30 meters down.
I will never forget the Flower Gardens. The trip was like a holiday but I also learnt new things about science and research projects. The team was very friendly and everyone was happy to explain what they knew about the sea. It was a great opportunity and it has made me think about my goals in life. The experience will surely help me work harder to become a scientist.

“But, mum, I can’t just walk out in the middle of a game!” said Mary.
“You shouldn’t be playing the game in the first place.”
“But, mum, why can’t I? You never tell Peter or Dave not to play football. I had to leave the game at half time and rush back so you wouldn’t get angry with me,” said Mary.

Several weeks later, we had a fire drill (消防演习) at school. The alarm went off, and we had to leave our classroom quickly. At first, I felt a little nervous, but I remembered everything the firefighters taught us. I stayed low to the ground, crawled to the door, and got outside. After the drill, our teacher reminded us that all the safety rules we learned are there to protect us and that we must take them seriously.
