Time to let go!
When I asked my mum and dad if I could go to Kavos with some of my friends for a week, the last thing I thought they would say was “yes”. “There is nothing to discuss,” my dad barked, “Of course you can’t. My girl, you are too young to travel without the presence (在场) of an adult. It’s completely out of question.” My mum just went on and on about all of the possible dangers. So I tried to change their minds. I told them,“If you were worried about the possibility of me falling off a wall and dying in Kavos, then why weren’t you also worried about the possibility of the same thing happening to me here in London?”.
Finally, they agreed—unwillingly. My mum took me to the airport. I had to fly because my friends had flown out the day before. I arrived at the hotel and met my friends at 6 a. m., after a long night of flying.
After having left my luggage in my room, I explored the attractions with my friends. Everyone spoke English and everywhere looked like a cheap American film set. It was just what we all needed after a long year of busy study.
I promised my parents I wouldn’t go out every night. But once you’re there, it just can’t be helped. Every one of us wanted to make the most of our week of freedom. To be honest, I think we did get a bit too crazy.
I still wonder if my parents were happy with their decision. But I did have a wonderful holiday. I think the experience should make my parents realize that it is time for them to let go. I got home safely at last. So did my friends. Now I’m talking with my mum about a similar journey next year. She is speechless for a moment, then she cries, “My alarm bells (警钟) have already started ringing.”

①On Earth, when you go to the bathroom, gravity (重力) helps the pee (小便) and poop (大便) go down into the toilet and stay there. But in space, things float (漂浮) around. When the Space Station goes around the Earth, it feels like there is no gravity on board.
②“In space, if you had a common toilet, the water would just float around and finally float out,” says NASA astronaut Randy Bresnik. It’s too awful!
③In space toilets, gentle vacuums (真空装置) do the work of gravity. Flowing air sucks (吸) everything into the toilet and holds it there.
④To pee, astronauts use a simple funnel (漏斗) connected to a soft pipe. There are different tops for men and women. Astronauts poop into a metal toilet with a very small opening, the size of a baseball. Vacuum helps to move everything along.
⑤Instead of flushing (冲水), astronaut s use throwaway bags in the toilet. When they finish, they close the bag and push it through a hole into a waste bin. The Space Station has its own water treatment machine, where dirty water, including pee, is cleaned and recycled. Bags of poop go out with the rubbish. They burn up with the rest of the rubbish when they hit Earth’s atmosphere (大气层).
⑥Because going to the bathroom is quite different in space, astronauts have to learn how to work the space toilets and how to sit correctly over the small hole. They practice on Earth to get better at it. Training helps to make these daily tasks easier, leaving more time for science.
⑦But some things can only be learned in space. “When you go to the bathroom in space, you have to use your elbows (肘部) and your feet to hold yourself in the right position because there’s no gravity,” says Scott Wenstein, who trains astronauts. As he notes, “On Earth, it’s easy to eat, go to the bathroom, and sleep because gravity helps out. In space those basic things take a little bit more time and effort.”
41.What would happen if a common toilet was used in space?
A.It would work as well as it does on Earth. B.There would be a strong vacuum inside the toilet.
C.Dirty water would float around and even float out. D.It would cost a great deal of water to flush the toilet.
42.Why are vacuums used in space toilets on the Space Station?
A.To burn up the rubbish. B.To deal with zero gravity. C.To fit men and women. D.To connect a soft pipe.
43.Which of the following is the correct order of the waste treatment steps on the space station?
a. Close bags of pee and poop. b. Recycle pee in the water treatment machine.
c. Burn the waste up along with other rubbish. d. Put bags of pee and poop into a waste bin.
A.a-b-c-d B.c-b-d-a C.c-a-b-d D.a-d-b-c
44.The sentence “So going to the bathroom in space takes a special kind of toilet.” should be put ________.
A.at the beginning of Paragraph 2 B.at the beginning of Paragraph 3
C.at the end of Paragraph 4 D.at the end of Paragraph 5
45.From which paragraph can we learn about the importance of astronaut training on Earth?
A.Paragraph 1. B.Paragraph 5. C.Paragraph 6. D.Paragraph 7.

四、任务型阅读 阅读下面短文, 请根据短文内容, 在文后表格中填入恰当的单词, 每空 一词。 (共10空;每空1. 5分, 满分15分)
Are you sure what to do if an American friend invites you to visit his family and you’ve never been to an American’s home before? Should you take a gift? What should you dress? When should you arrive? Glad you asked. What good manners should you have when you’re the guest in an American family?
The question of whether or not to bring a gift often troubles guests. In American culture, a guest is not forced to bring a present. Of course, some people do bring some small gifts to their hosts. Proper gifts generally might be flowers, candy or—if the family has small children—toys. If you choose not to bring a gift, don’t worry. No one will even notice that.
What manners should you pay attention to when you are invited to a dinner? For most informal (非正式的) dinners, you should wear everyday clothes. Plan to arrive on time, or call to tell your hosts about the delay (延迟). During the dinner conversation, it’s customary to compliment (称赞) the hosts about the wonderful meal. Of course, the biggest compliment is to eat lots of food to show you enjoy it! When you’ve had plenty, you might offer to clear the table or wash the dishes. But since you’re the guest, your hosts may not let you do that. Instead, they may invite you to move to the living room for dessert with tea or coffee. After about an hour of general talking, it’s probably time to head for the door (向门口走去).
Americans usually like to have advance notice (提前通知) when people come to see them. Only very close friends drop by (顺便来访) without any notice. This is especially true if the guests want to stay for a few days. Even relatives don’t usually stay for several weeks at a time. Here’s some good advice for house guests: Short stays are the best. While you’re staying with an American family, try to keep your living area clean and tidy. Your host family will be thankful for your consideration (体贴). And they may even invite you back!

The Habit that Influences Me Most
In the past three years, I’ve grown taller, become more active in sports, and more outgoing. But what I’m most proud of is that I’ve got better at managing my time. I have formed a habit of setting a schedule before doing something and it really helps me a lot.
Before, I had trouble managing my time. I couldn’t find the balance between my hobbies and schoolwork. And there was always disagreement between my parents and I.
Now, I have a set schedule. I put my schoolwork in the first place. After that, I hang out with friends or enjoy my hobbies to relax. This routine has made a big difference.
With this habit, I successfully achieved the balance and improved time management. It has made me more organized and relaxed.
