Many of us have heard of Alex Honnold, who made history in 2018 when he became the first man to climb EI Capitan without ropes or safety equipment. But his mother, Dierdre Wolownick, just became the oldest woman to conquer the famous peak:she reached the top on September 23 — the morning of her 70th birthday.
Dierdre, the writer and language teacher, decided to take up climbing as a means to connect more with her son. In 2008, accompanied by her son Alex, she visited a climbing gym and completed 12 routes that first day with his help, but it was months before she worked up the courage to return and practice on her own.
Dierdre became committed to the sport, and began to meet friends and sharpen her skills. She scaled (登上) parts of Half Dome and Cathedral peak at a time when many people at her age are thinking about retirement and slowing down. The writer would go on to publish a book about her climbing experiences with Alex called The Sharp End of Life: A Mother's Story.
“As a mother, I am impressed by this role-exchange process. Parents and children often wind up changing roles in life as they get older,” she writes in her book. “But never, I thought, is that transformation as obvious as when they climb together.”
On September 23, Dierdre and her friends set out in the dark, at 6 a.m. The route is steep (陡峭的 ) enough to require all-fours, grabbing rocks and trees and whatever else will hold the weight. Yet despite all difficulties, the team made it to the top. “It was really inspiring to watch her and then to have her on top with all of us,” said one of Dierdre's friends. “There was a special look on everyone's face. We knew where we were. We knew how amazing the moment truly was.”
4.Why did Dierdre start climbing mountains?
A.To know her son better.
B.To celebrate her birthday.
C.To seek writing inspiration.
D.To set an example for the old.
5.Which of the following best describes Dierdre?
A.Patient. B.Courageous. C.Intelligent. D.Generous.
6.What does the last paragraph tell about Dierdre's climbing journey?
A.It was worth the efforts.
B.It took days to complete.
C.It was arranged on her own.
D.It required special equipment.
7.What may be a suitable title for the text?
A.Mountain climbing benefits health
B.Mother goes beyond her son's wish

Pangolins (穿山甲) are the most trafficked (非法交易) mammals in the world and are facing extinction. To draw attention to these scaly (有鳞片的), anteater-like animals, a new wildlife documentary,Eye of the Pangolin, is attempting a unique way to inspire action and conservation. Partnering with the nonprofit organization Pangolin, Africa, the documentary was made available on YouTube in May 2019. The intention is to reach communities wherever the Internet is available, especially African communities, who live near the animal's habitats.
Over two years, the documentary crew traveled to South Africa, Ghana, Central African Republic and Gabon in search of the four unique species of pangolin, which has never been achieved before. Filmmakers Bruce Young and Johan Vermeulen say that they went into the shoot knowing relatively little about pangolins, but grew to respect and appreciate the animals. Getting close to the creatures over two years was a crash course in these secretive creatures. Johan Vermeulen said, “One thing however that might seem unimportant is that they are actually quite fussy eaters. You would think they would eat any type of ant, but they all prefer a specific type ant.”
Pangolins are hunted illegally across Africa for their scales, which are used for traditional medicine, and their meat. In April 2019, Singaporean customs officials conducted two separate seizures of 24 tons of pangolin scales, which equals to the death of 69,000 pangolins.
Though the documentary focuses less on the trafficking of pangolins, and more on the animals in their natural habitats, the aim of the documentary is to inspire viewers around the world to call for action to end trafficking and protect these unique creatures.
Filmed on location in South Africa, Ghana, Central African Republic, and Gabon, this powerful documentary is the story of two men on a mission to get all four species of African pangolin on camera for the very first time.
8.What is the meaning of the underlined word“fussy”in paragraph 2?
A.Picky. B.Messy. C.Showy. D.Heavy.
9.What is the purpose of the documentary?
A.To study the situation of pangolins.
B.To collect fund to protect pangolins.
C.To raise awareness of pangolin protection.
D.To propose setting up pangolin reserves.
10.What's the documentary mainly about?
A.The illegal trade of pangolins.
B.The medical function of pangolin's scales.
C.The life of pangolins in their natural habitats.
D.The efforts of Pangolin, Africa to save pangolins.
11.Where is the text most likely from?

A bat and a ball cost $1,10 in total. The bat costs $1.00 more than the ball. How much does the ball cost?
If you answered 10 cents, you're not alone — most people give the same answer (the correct answer is 5 cents), It's an example of how we often rely on intuitive (直觉的) responses — answers we feel are true. “People give answers that pop into their mind,” says Steven Sloman. “We don't spend much time reflecting and checking whether the answer is right or wrong.”
The bat and ball question helps explain why we often believe in fake (假的) news. It is part of human nature to believe, says Sloman. But “the trick with fake news is to know to verify ” — in other words, to stop and question what you know.
In one experiment, Sloman and a colleague invented a discovery called helium rain. They told a group of volunteers about it, but admitted they could not fully explain what it was. They then asked the volunteers to rate their own understanding of helium rain. Most volunteers rated themselves 1out of 7, meaning they did not understand the concept.
The researchers then told another group of volunteers about the discovery. This time, they said that scientists could fully explain how it works. When asked to rate their understanding, the volunteers gave an average answer of 2. The scientists' confidence gave the volunteers an increased sense of their own understanding, Sloman says.
According to Sloman, studies show that knowledge spreads like a contagion (传染病). This idea can be seen in any fields, including politics. “If everyone around you is saying they understand why a politician is dishonest,” Sloman says, “then you're going to start thinking that you understand, too.”
“Another explanation for the spread of fake news is motivated reasoning,” writes Adam Wyatz, an American management professor. “We are naturally more likely to believe things that confirm our existing opinions.”
So, in a world where misleading information is common, training people to care about fact-checking is important, especially in online communities, “We should check things and not just take them at face value,” Sloman says. “Verify before you believe.”
12.Why does the author use the example of the bat and ball question?
A.To warn that people often ignore skills that they learned. B.To show that there are various answers to a question.
C.To illustrate that people tend to rush to a conclusion. D.To arouse people's interest in playing guessing games.
13.In paragraph3, what does the underlined word “verify” mean?
A.To make sure something is true.
B.To think about something for a long time.
C.To express an opinion about something.
D.To follow your intuitive response.
14.When do more volunteers claim to understand helium rain?
A.When some of the volunteers explained it to them.
B.When Sloman and his colleagues showed them how it works.
C.When they have more confidence in themselves.
D.When they believed that scientists understood it.
15.Which ofthe following is an example of“motivated reasoning”?
A.You trust a damaging story about someone who you always judge negatively.
B.You post a message online that gives your personal opinion about a story.
C.You search online for more information about a doubtful story on social media.
D.You think a university professor dishonest when everybody around you say so.

Have you ever felt stressed? Well, you are not alone, as every person in the world has to face stress at one time or another. Since stress is a part of life, it is essential to learn how to deal with it. Here are some strategies for dealing with stress and pressure.
1 To get rid of this feeling, keep yourself organized. For example, you can keep a daily organizer and plan your activities. Get your priorities straight and focus on things that are really important.
Do not get stuck in minor issues that only create additional work for you. Break tasks down into manageable bits and tackle them one by one. Proper planning also helps you avoid the stress of doing things at the eleventh hour.
2 Doing things that you like such as listening to music, taking a walk or reading a book can take your mind off things that bother you. Even doing nothing at all can be beneficial. After a short break, you will feel refreshed and more able to tackle a problem or a piece of work. 3 This would only cause you more stress when you have to rush to finish your work in the end.
Finally, do not set such high standards for yourself and others that it leads to dissatisfaction and pressure. If you aim for perfection all the time, you will end up frustrated and stressed out.Learn to slow down, let go and look at the positive side of things. If you are too anxious about something, you will not be able to think clearly and make good decisions. 4 Focus on what has already been done and what is good. Then, negative stressful feelings will disappear.
In conclusion, stress may be unavoidable, but it need not make life miserable for you. There are many ways to reduce and deal with stress such as the three strategies shared here. 5
A.Life gets better once the stress is controlled.
B.You can turn to others when you feel at a loss.
C.Most of the time, stress is a result of feeling defeated.
D.Besides that, taking time to relax can help you ease stress.
E.In addition, you could hurt the people around you with that anxiety.
F.It's common to shoulder a variety of pressure in the eventful world.
G.Make sure that taking a break is not an excuse for putting off your work.

One day, my husband Mike and I decided to climb Nippletop Mountains. Our friends Emily and Jane gladly joined us. They were all experienced hikers.
We set off in the morning. It took us less than five hours to get to the top. It was almost 1:30 p.m. We'd have to head down soon, while it was still light out.
A friendly young hiker waved to us. “Hey, do you want me to take your picture?” “Absolutely!” I said. Emily and Jane squeezed in next to us. Mike gave the hiker his phone. He took a few pictures. We took a different trail so we could get down before dark. It was steeper but shorter.
We spaced ourselves apart so we wouldn't fall on each other. I led the way, setting a fast pace. The trail grew steeper. Carefully I sidestepped down the slope. A quarter mile down, I stopped and looked up the trail for the others. I couldn't see them.
Then a scream pierced the quiet. Mike! He must have fallen. I climbed up the frozen slope. Finally I saw him. His hands were seizing his right leg. My eyes went to his foot, which pointed the wrong way. I shouted. “What happened?” “I slipped on the ice,” he said.
“Don't worry,” I said, searching into my backpack but found nothing for a broken bone. Moments later, my friends came cautiously down. Jane checked Mike's ankle. “We need to fix it with sticks,” she said.
“Here, try this,” I said, handing over my hiking poles. I peeled off one of my shirts.Jane fixed a pole to Mike's leg. But there was no way the three of us could carry him down this mountain.I pulled out my cell phone and dialed 911. No signal.
“Can I help?” It was the guy who'd taken our picture at the summit. “My husband fell. He's hurt, and I don't have service here.” “Take mine,” he said. “I got service near the top.” I'd have to leave Mike and climb higher to get service.

故选A。
14.D 解析:细节理解题。根据第五段中的“This time, they said that scientists could fully explain how it works.(这一 次,他们说科学家们可以完全解释它是如何工作的。)”可知,当他们相信科学家能理解这个概念的时候,更多的志愿者声称他们了解“氦雨”。故选D。
15.A 解析:推理判断题。根据倒数第二段中的“We are naturally more likely to believe things that confirm our existing opinions.”可知,我们自然而然地更倾向于相信 那些证实了我们现有观点的事情,换言之,就是带着主观预设来看待事物。故可推断出A项“你相信一个你总是消极评价的人的负面故事”为“动机性推理”的典型例子。故选A。

六、读后续写

And then I returned the phone to its owner, but he stayed in case he could help. I talked and joked with Mike to keep his spirits up. The rest of us kept moving to stay warm, Several hours went by. Nobody came who helped Mike.
