In the peaceful countryside of Kadaba in Karnataka’s Mangaluru, India, among large green fields, lies a farm painted in the lively colors of foreign fruits. The red and green rambutans (红毛丹), accompanied by the dark purple mangosteens (山竹), often attract the attention of people passing by. Together, they generate a handsome income for 42-year-old Lohith Shetty.
Born into a farming family, Lohith saw his father and uncles slave away in their 21-acre farm, growing local produce. Despite having bigger ambitions as a child, poverty led him to drop out of school after Grade 10, pressuring him to focus on finding ways out.
After having tried his hand at different businesses, Lohith was still struggling to make ends meet for his family. However, Lohith’s journey to becoming a millionaire would begin when he got a work reference from a friend to work on a farm in Dharmasthala.
Over the next decade, Lohith’s job at the farm gave him access to the know-how of cultivating foreign fruits like rambutan, dragon fruit, and mangosteen. This became his front-row ticket to understanding advanced agricultural practices and novel methods to make farming a profitable business.
After returning home in 2016 with his newfound knowledge, Lohith decided to transform his experience into a financial adventure. He began by renting 20 acres of land and the 21 acres his family already owned. The next step was to purchase plants, which he did from a nursery (苗圃) in Kerala. And the next eight years witnessed Lohith draw on his advantage of being one of the first growers of foreign fruits in his region to promote his business steadily.
Today, his adventure earns nearly $1.2 million annually for him. Moreover, apart from caring for his own farm and nursery, Lohith also helps people interested in growing such crops. “We grow the plants, maintain them for three years, and once they start giving a good yield, the owners take over,” he says.
24.What does the underlined phrase “slave away” in paragraph 2 mean?
A.Put in lots of labour. B.Become slaves.
C.Invest amounts of money. D.Rise to wealth.
25.Why did Lohith quit attending school?
A.He desired to seek his fortune. B.He performed poorly at school.
C.He suffered from financial challenges. D.He longed to pursue a farming career.
26.What was the turning point in Lohith’s life?
A.The inheritance of the family farm. B.A job recommendation from a friend.
C.Instructing locals to grow foreign fruits. D.Obtaining skills from different businesses.
27.Which of the following best describes Lohith?
A.Devoted and reliable. B.Tough and sympathetic.
C.Powerful and talented. D.Ambitious and cautious.

Be honest: how often does your social media scrolling lead to shopping? And how many of those things that TikTok made you buy did you actually need? Enter de-influencing, the TikTok trend aiming to save our bank balances in the process.
De-influencing is the TikTok trend with hundreds of millions of views that’s challenging the promotion around so-called popular products by telling you what you shouldn’t buy, instead of what you should. It’s a response to a few different things, including a general feeling of over-consumption and the cost of living crisis.
“People are experiencing a general social media fatigue (厌倦) at the moment,” says makeup artist and beauty content creator Rose Gallagher. “Originally, user-generated content was so popular because people tended to share thoughts on things that they had purchased themselves with no real connection to the brand. Now, with so much to be gained from giving a positive review, it has become harder to tell the genuine reviews from those influenced by the potential for earning.”
How is de-influencing different from influencing? It sounds progressive, but once you scratch the surface, there isn’t a huge difference between influencing and de-influencing. “It’s still influence but it’s telling people what not to buy,” says Kendall. While TikTokers may be warning consumers away from expensive or well-known products, some continue to influence by telling consumers what they should buy instead.
Being honest and authentic has the potential to pay off, too. While criticizing big brands may reduce an influencer’s chances of landing a new deal in the short term, it also may increase their long-term reach as they gain a reputation for being trustworthy. Sparking debates over whether a product works or not can also drive sales for brands, as consumers respond by wanting to try it for themselves.
What is different about de-influencing is encouraging consumers to take a moment to think about whether they need a product and whether it’s right for them versus whether they’re simply being influenced because it’s new, popular, or exciting. This is part of a bigger movement in beauty.
28.Why does the author pose the two questions in paragraph1?
A.To test readers’ honesty. B.To present people’s doubts.
C.To introduce the topic of the passage. D.To give a warning against social media.
29.According to the passage, which is NOT a factor that causes de-influencing?
A.An overall feeling of over-consumption. B.The high cost of the tough modern life.
C.The increasing number of genuine reviews. D.People’s behaviour of buying more than needed.
30.In what way is de-influencing similar to influencing according to the author?
A.Staying honest and authentic in face of profits.
B.Guiding consumers’ decisions on purchasing.
C.Warning consumers away from expensive products.
D.Leading customers to try products by sparking debates.
31.What is the writer’s attitude towards de-influencing?
A.Doubtful. B.Objective. C.Disapproving. D.Sympathetic.

Six years before her husband was diagnosed (诊断) with Parkinson’s disease, Joy Milne detected a change in his scent (气味), which she later linked to the disease when she joined the charity Parkinson’s UK and met others with the same distinct smell. Being one of the most common age-related disorders, Parkinson’s affects an estimated seven to ten million people worldwide.
Milne, a super-smeller from Perth, Scotland, wanted to share her ability with researchers. So when Tilo Kunath, a neuroscientist who specializes in the disease, gave a talk during a Parkinson’s UK event in 2012, she raised her hand during the Q&A session and claimed she was able to smell the disease. “To be honest, initially I didn’t take her seriously,” says Kunath. “I said, ‘No, I’ve never heard of that. Next question, please.’” But months later he tried to contact her.
Once Kunath and other researchers found Milne, they tested her claim by having her smell 12 T-shirts: six that belonged to people with Parkinson’s and six from healthy individuals. Milne correctly identified 11 out of 12, but miscategorized one of the non-Parkinson’s T-shirts in the disease category. It turned out, however, she was not wrong at all — that person would be diagnosed with Parkinson’s less than a year later. Milne may not be the only person with this ability. Since her story was reported last week Kunath and his co-worker, Perdita Barran, have received e-mails from around 20 people who claimed they also have this ability.
When asked about where the smell comes from, Milne pointed to the shirt collars. Sebaceous glands (皮脂腺), which produce an oily substance called sebum, are concentrated around your neck and T-zone area — the forehead, nose and chin. So it may be sebum that causes the smell. Other studies have found that alpha-synuclein, the masses of protein that appear in the brains of those with Parkinson’s, also gather on the skin. This may also be a potential cause of the change in scent. Researchers hope that further study on what is behind the smell changes in Parkinson’s patients’ skin will lead to a new, effective diagnostic tool.
32.What did Milne think of the smell from her husband?
A.It might disappear six years later.
B.It might be a sign of Parkinson’s disease.
C.It might differ from other Parkinson’s patients’.
D.It might be the cause of some age-related disorders.
33.What was Kunath’s attitude to Milne’s ability at first?
A.He kept silent about it. B.He considered it a trick.
C.He had little interest in it. D.He admired it very much.
34.Which of the following best describes the T-shirt test?
A.Seven T-shirts belonged to healthy people.
B.Milne categorized all the T-shirts accurately.
C.It was designed to test a treatment for Parkinson’s.
D.It compared Milne with twenty other super-smellers.
35.What will Kunath and Barran most probably do next?
A.Figure out the function of sebum. B.Develop drugs for Parkinson’s.
C.Try to locate alpha-synuclein. D.Find the source of the smell.

A primary goal of culturally responsive education is to help all students become respectful of various cultures and people that they’ll interact with. However, the world is more complex and diverse than the environment that students inhabit. 36 Then what might an educator do to promote diverse cultures in the classroom?
Classroom activities often work well. For example, educators can show students photographs of people from different cultures every day. 37 In this process, they’ll gradually learn to know and accept each kind of looks. It’s important to avoid teaching students about the same role models repeatedly.
38 Wall spaces can be used to display posters about cultural groups. Students can mark the countries from which their ancestors immigrated on a world map. And classroom signs can be hung in several languages. Such cultural exposure helps remind the students that people from diverse backgrounds are all born equal, protecting students from the cultural stereotypes
Another important goal of education is to teach students to appreciate their own culture. 39 To fit in with the social order, they sometimes have to change or remove their cultural behaviors. To avoid this situation. investigating unique characteristics of their community is one effective way to help students gain a greater appreciation of their own culture. Educators can encourage students to interview their family members about cultural practices and traditions and then share them with pride. 40
A.This can be a challenging task for educators.
B.Over time, wall spaces will expose students to rich diversity.
C.This activity can motivate students to show themselves bravely.
D.Students can see various appearances and find beauty from each.
E.Gradually, they will start to build confidence in their own culture.
F.Minority students may feel pressured to live in a multicultural group.
G.Providing a culturally responsive learning environment is also critical.

Her name was Ms. Finch. She was very short, with short brown hair and unique eyeglasses that seemed too small for her tiny face. Despite being old enough to retire, her temper made it clear she wasn’t planning to do so quietly. Nelson Brian felt exhausted as he sat in one of the hard-backed chairs in the room, worn down by Ms. Finch’s intense stare.
Ms. Finch sat on the edge of her chair, her brown shoes barely touching the worn carpet. In a rude tone, she remarked. “Mr. Nelson, your file says you’ve been to four job interviews in the last ten days, but you haven’t managed to secure a job. If today’s appearance is any indication of your commitment to your job search, it’s no wonder Flowers on First didn’t want to hi re you as a delivery driver.”
A wave of sickness accompanied the heat spreading through Brian’s body. He knew going straight from soccer practice to the career consulting session was a mistake, but he thought showing up in non-slip shoes would be better than being late. As he tried to explain, Ms. Finch pressed her lips together in annoyance.
“I’m not interested in excuses, Mr. Nelson,” she said. “But I’d like to know why someone with your grade point average and an extensive list of after-school activities is struggling to find a part-time job.” Brain’s commitment to extracurricular (工作之外的) activities and good academic standing shifted Ms. Finch’s perspective, realizing he possessed qualities that could contribute positively to the workplace.
Ms. Finch’s question brought back the helpless feeling that plagued (折磨) Brian during his failed interviews. “I-I-I am too nervous to say a word,” he stammered (结结巴巴地说), keeping his eyes on the carpet. Brian’s openness in explaining himself and admitting he was nervous made Ms. Finch understand him better.
注意:
(1)续写词数应为150左右;
Waiting for her blame, Brian was surprised when Ms. Finch shook her head.

In order to provide these likely living costs, the University and the Oxford Student Union have conducted a relevant survey among existing students about the expenditure data.
Food: Three ordinary meals on campus each day, dining out not counted.
Accommodation: The figures above show a 20% discount, which is commonly accepted in Oxford, if the same apartment is rented by the same student for 9 months and more in a row. They also include related bills (for example, utilities such as electricity and heating).
Study costs: These are likely costs directly related to your studies, such as text books, stationery, printing and photocopying, course- related equipment and materials.
Other: These are small, mixed costs which do not fall under the other categories above.
You may need to make additional budget for costs such as travel to and from fieldwork out of the city, or for international students the visa and health care costs (see student visa webpages). These costs are not included in the figures above.
21.How do the data come out?
A.They’re estimated by the authority.
B.They’re provided by the graduates.
C.They’re based on the costs of last term.
D.They’re collected from current students.
22.How much does an Oxford student spend at least on accommodation for a year?
A.£6,192. B.£7,140. C.£6,720. D.£8,400.
23.What is the purpose of the survey mentioned?
A.To determine the average living expenses in Oxford.
B.To instruct students to make a budget for costs.
C.To establish the likely living costs for the year.
D.To compare the living costs in other universities
根据第二段“In order to provide these likely living costs, the University and the Oxford Student Union have conducted a relevant survey among existing students about the expenditure data. (为了提供这些可能的生活费用,大学和牛津学生会对现有学生进行了一项关于支出数据的相关调查)”可知,这些可能的生活费用数据是通过大学和牛津学生会对在校学生进行相关支出数据的调查得来的,即数据是从在校学生那里收集的,故选D项。
22.细节理解题。根据表格中“Accommodation For 1 month Lower range £700 (住宿1个月下限£700)”及第四段中“Accommodation: The figures above show a 20% discount, which is commonly accepted in Oxford, if the same apartment is rented by the same student for 9 months and more in a row. (住宿:上图显示了20%的折扣,如果同一套公寓由同一学生连续9个月或更长时间租用,这在牛津是普遍接受的)”可知,住宿费用一个月的下限是£700。但如果同一学生连续租用同一公寓9个月及以上,会有20%的折扣,没有折扣时一年的费用为£700×12 = £8,400。有折扣的情况是针对连续租9个月及以上,一年的实际费用应该是£8,400×(1 - 20%) = £6,720,故选C项。
23.推理判断题。根据第一段中“We provide the costs per month and you can multiply up by the number of months you expect to live here, so that you are fully aware of and consider very carefully the likely living costs associated with your chosen courses of study at Oxford. (我们提供每月的费用,你可以乘以你预计在这里居住的月数,以便你充分了解并非常仔细地考虑与你选择的牛津学习课程相关的可能生活费用)”可知,此次调查的目的就是确定在牛津学习一年可能的生活费用,以便学生能清楚了解并仔细考虑相关费用情况。故选C项。

【答案】24.A 25.C 26.B 27.B
根据划线词上文“Lohith saw his father and uncles”以及后文“in their 21-acre farm, growing local produce (在他们21英亩的农场里,种植当地农产品)”可知,此处指Lohith看到父亲和叔叔在田地里付出了大量劳动种植农产品。 故选A。
根据第二段“Despite having bigger ambitions as a child, poverty led him to drop out of school after Grade 10, pressuring him to focus on finding ways out. (尽管小时候有更大的抱负,但贫困导致他在10年级后辍学,迫使他专注于寻找出路)”可知,Lohith退学是因为他遭受了经济上的困难。故选C。
26.细节理解题。根据第三段“However, Lohith’s journey to becoming a millionaire would begin when he got a work reference from a friend to work on a farm in Dharmasthala. (然而,Lohith成为百万富翁的旅程开始于他从一个朋友那里得到了在Dharmasthala一个农场工作的工作推荐)”可知,Lohith人生的转折点是朋友的工作推荐信。故选B。
27.推理判断题。根据第四段“Over the next decade, Lohith’s job at the farm gave him access to the know-how of cultivating foreign fruits like rambutan, dragon fruit, and mangosteen. This became his front-row ticket to understanding advanced agricultural practices and novel methods to make farming a profitable business. (在接下来的十年里,Lohith在农场的工作让他掌握了种植红毛丹、火龙果和山竹等外国水果的诀窍。这成为他了解先进农业实践和新方法的前排门票,使农业成为一项有利可图的业务)”以及最后一段“Moreover, apart from caring for his own farm and nursery, Lohith also helps people interested in growing such crops. (此外,除了打理自己的农场和苗圃,Lohith还帮助对种植这类作物感兴趣的人)”可知,Lohith坚强且富有同情心。故选B。

根据第一段“Be honest: how often does your social media scrolling lead to shopping? And how many of those things that TikTok made you buy did you actually need? Enter de-influencing, the TikTok trend aiming to save our bank balances in the process.(说实话:你浏览社交媒体的频率是多少?抖音让你买的东西中有多少是你真正需要的?在这个过程中,TikTok的“去影响力”趋势旨在挽救我们的银行余额。)”可知,第一段提出两个问题的目的是引出文章的主题,即抖音的“去影响力”趋势。故选C。
29.细节理解题。根据第一段中“And how many of those things that TikTok made you buy did you actually need?(抖音让你买的东西中有多少是你真正需要的?)”、第二段中“It’s a response to a few different things, including a general feeling of over-consumption and the cost of living crisis.(这是对一些不同事情的反应,包括过度消费和生活成本危机的普遍感觉。)”以及第三段中“Originally, user-generated content was so popular because people tended to share thoughts on things that they had purchased themselves with no real connection to the brand. Now, with so much to be gained from giving a positive review, it has become harder to tell the genuine reviews from those influenced by the potential for earning.(最初,用户生成内容之所以如此受欢迎,是因为人们倾向于分享他们自己购买的东西,而与品牌没有真正的联系。现在,由于给予积极的评价会让你收获良多,要区分真实的评价和受潜在收入影响的评价变得越来越难了。)”可知,导致去影响力的因素有过度消费的整体感觉、现代生活的高成本以及们购买超出需求的行为,越来越多的真实评论不是造成去影响力的因素。故选C。
30.细节理解题。根据倒数第三段“It’s still influence but it’s telling people what not to buy(它仍然有影响力,但它告诉人们不要买什么)”和“While TikTokers may be warning consumers away from expensive or well-known products, some continue to influence by telling consumers what they should buy instead.(虽然TikTokers可能在警告消费者远离昂贵或知名的产品,但一些人继续通过告诉消费者应该买什么来影响消费者。)”
通读全文,尤其是倒数第三段“How is de-influencing different from influencing? It sounds progressive, but once you scratch the surface, there isn’t a huge difference between influencing and de-influencing.(去影响与影响有何不同?这听起来很进步,但一旦你触及表面,影响和去影响之间并没有太大的区别。)”和最后一段“What is different about de-influencing is encouraging consumers to take a moment to think about whether they need a product and whether it’s right for them versus whether they’re simply being influenced because it’s new, popular, or exciting.(去影响的不同之处在于,鼓励消费者花点时间思考他们是否需要一种产品,它是否适合他们,而不是仅仅因为它是新的、流行的或令人兴奋的而受到影响。)”

根据第一段中“Six years before her husband was diagnosed (诊断) with Parkinson’s disease, Joy Milne detected a change in his scent (气味), which she later linked to the disease when she joined the charity Parkinson’s UK and met others with the same distinct smell. (在丈夫被诊断出患有帕金森病的六年前,Joy Milne发现丈夫的气味发生了变化,后来她加入了英国帕金森病慈善机构,并遇到了其他有同样独特气味的人,她认为这与疾病有关)”可知,她认为丈夫身上的气味可能是帕金森病的一个迹象。故选B项。
33.推理判断题。根据第二段中““To be honest, initially I didn’t take her seriously,” says Kunath. “I said, ‘No, I’ve never heard of that. Next question, please.’” (“说实话,一开始我没把她当回事,”Kunath说。“我说,‘不,我从来没听说过。下一个问题。’”)”可知,Kunath最初对Milne的能力并不重视,没有认真对待。也就是说,他对这件事没什么兴趣。故选C项。
34.细节理解题。根据第三段中“Milne correctly identified 11 out of 12, but miscategorized one of the non-Parkinson’s T-shirts in the disease category. It turned out, however, she was not wrong at all — that person would be diagnosed with Parkinson’s less than a year later. (Milne正确地识别了12件T恤中的11件,但错误地将一件非帕金森氏症患者的T恤归类为疾病类别。然而,事实证明,她完全没有错——不到一年后,那个人就被诊断出患有帕金森症)”可知,Milne准确地对所有T恤进行了分类。故选B项。
35.推理判断题。根据最后一段中“Researchers hope that further study on what is behind the smell changes in Parkinson’s patients’ skin will lead to a new, effective diagnostic tool. (研究人员希望进一步研究帕金森氏症患者皮肤气味变化背后的原因,带来一种新的、有效的诊断工具)”可知,研究出帕金森氏症患者皮肤气味变化背后的原因有助于开发出新的诊断工具。由此可知,接下来他们很可能会寻找气味的来源。故选D项。

【答案】36.A 37.D 38.G 39.F 40.E
36.由上文“A primary goal of culturally responsive education is to help all students become respectful of various cultures and people that they’ll interact with. However, the world is more complex and diverse than the environment that students inhabit.(文化响应教育的主要目标是帮助所有学生尊重他们将与之互动的各种文化和人。然而,世界比学生所居住的环境更复杂、更多样。)”可知,这里讲了文化响应教育的主要目标和世界是复杂且多样的。而A项This can be a challenging task for educators.(这对教育工作者来说可能是一项具有挑战性的任务。) 故选A项。
37.由上文“For example, educators can show students photographs of people from different cultures every day.(例如,教育工作者可以每天向学生展示来自不同文化背景的人的照片。)” Students can see various appearances and find beauty from each.(学生可以看到各种各样的外貌,并从中发现美。)符合语境,其中various appearances与上文people from different cultures 对应,所以有承上作用。故选D项。
38.由下文“Wall spaces can be used to display posters about cultural groups. Students can mark the countries from which their ancestors immigrated on a world map. And classroom signs can be hung in several languages. Such cultural exposure helps remind the students that people from diverse backgrounds are all born equal, protecting students from the cultural stereotypes (刻板印象).(墙壁空间可用于展示有关文化团体的海报。学生可以在世界地图上标出他们祖先移民的国家。教室标志可以用几种语言悬挂。这种文化接触有助于提醒学生,来自不同背景的人生来平等,保护学生免受文化刻板印象的影响。)”可知,这里主要讲利用周围环境进行文化响应教育,而G项Providing a culturally responsive learning environment is also critical.(提供一个文化响应的学习环境也很重要。)
39.由下文“To fit in with the social order, they sometimes have to change or remove their cultural behaviors.(为了适应社会秩序,他们有时不得不改变或抛弃自己的文化行为。) ”可知,这里主要讲一些学生为了融入而改变或丢掉自己的文化,所以上文说明是哪些群体在丢掉自己的文化,而F项Minority students may feel pressured to live in a multicultural group.(少数民族学生可能会感到压力,不得不生活在一个多元文化的群体中.)
40.由上文“To avoid this situation. investigating unique characteristics of their community is one effective way to help students gain a greater appreciation of their own culture. Educators can encourage students to interview their family members about cultural practices and traditions and then share them with pride.(为了避免这种情况。调查他们社区的独特特征是帮助学生更好地欣赏自己文化的一种有效方法。教育工作者可以鼓励学生采访他们的家人,了解文化习俗和传统,然后自豪地分享。)”可知,这里主要讲怎样让学生不抛弃自己文化的方法,从而达到的效果,而E项Gradually, they will start to build confidence in their own culture.(渐渐地,他们将开始对自己的文化建立信心。)

故填on/upon。

故填a。

注意:
(1)续写词数应为150左右;
Waiting for her blame, Brian was surprised when Ms. Finch shook her head.
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Brian explained his choice of shoes and shorts, and Ms. Finch nodded understandingly.
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Paragraph 1:
Waiting for her blame, Brian was surprised when Ms. Finch shook her head. Ms. Finch made a brief mark on her clipboard. She looked at him curiously, her voice softening. “I’m not so different from you, Mr. Nelson. I, too, can be easily nervous in stressful situations. I apologize for being rude about your situation.” Then, Ms. Finch, showing sympathy toward Brian, finally recognized his genuine effort and commitment to the job search, despite his initial appearance.
Paragraph 2:
Brian explained his choice of shoes and shorts, and Ms. Finch nodded understandingly. “Being on time is crucial, Mr. Nelson, and I commend you for that. But may I suggest keeping alternative clothing on hand for such occasions? Excellent. Now, let’s get to work.” Ms. Finch offered encouraging words as they discussed his interview techniques and potential areas of improvement. She emphasized the importance of confidence and the impact of personal presentation during job interviews. And Brian was relieved and grateful to hear these, realizing that many teenagers fail in job interviews because they don’t put in the effort to present themselves professionally.
①道歉:apologize/make an apology
②建议:suggest/recommend
③强调:emphasize/stress/put emphasis on
