Sometimes, good advice takes time to sink in. When I first read Thoreau’s Walden, I was attracted by his call to simplify our lives. Nevertheless, I ignored his advice for forty years and enjoyed my life with possessions. But one morning, an incident occurred that illustrated the wisdom of Thoreau’s advice and changed my life.
It was January 13, a bright Sunday morning at my home in Minnesota. My challenge was to remove twelve inches of snow from my driveway before my favorite soccer game began. Whenever I tried to blow the snow out of my driveway, my snowblower ran just seconds before it stopped. So I had to wheel the machine back into the garage to check and repair. Meanwhile, my neighbor smiled and waved as he finished clearing the snow using his snowblower.
I abandoned the snowblower and seized a shovel, clearing a path through the driveway wide enough in fifteen minutes. After watching the game, I took apart the snowblower and dropped the pieces into a large trash can, feeling a rush of freedom. Now, no more trips to the gas station, and no more oil changes or breakdowns.
I shared my insight with my wife Carolyn, who was supportive. Whenever it snowed heavily, we skipped working out at the gym and shoveled the driveway together. The task never took more than thirty minutes and was followed by a celebratory cup of hot chocolate. A new winter tradition was born.
Following Thoreau’s advice to simplify life, I made a system for sorting through my possessions to decide what to keep, sell, donate, or desert and encouraged Carolyn to join me in my effort. By the time we retired, we moved to a retirement community with a small rental truck, saving thousands of dollars.
In retirement, we continue to enjoy the benefits of owning no more than we need. The less we own, the less we have to take care of, and the more time we have to pursue activities that bring us joy: biking, hiking, reading, and travelling. We are glad we took Thoreau’s advice.
24.How did the author react to Thoreau’s advice at first?
A.He ignored it and kept his habits. B.He advocated the lifestyle to his friends.
C.He abandoned his private possessions. D.He made improvements according to it.
25.What did the author plan to do after clearing the snow?
A.Drive to the local gym for sports. B.Read Thoreau’s book for advice.
C.Enjoy his favorite sports program. D.Take the snowblower to the gas station.
26.What was the author’s new family tradition?
A.Sorting through the possessions to make donations.
B.Celebrating their physical work with hot chocolate.
C.Doing the repairs of their possessions by themselves.
D.Getting people in the neighborhood to clear the snow.
27.What does the author imply in the last paragraph?
A.Good advice takes little time to be absorbed.
B.Simplicity makes room for more joy in life.
C.Owning more than enough brings us benefits.
D.Exchanging our possessions boosts happiness.

About one-third of adults globally suffer from loneliness, which can cause problems like depression and anxiety. A new generation of AI apps called AI companions is designed to simulate (模拟) natural conversations and keep people company. AI assistants like ChatGPT can do those things to some extent, but AI companions are designed to respond in a sympathetic, realistic way when you share your problems. Most of these programs are still at a relatively early stage, and are just building an audience. But do AI companions really work?
Our studies show that the best of these apps really do work. We started by analyzing 50,000 app reviews of five popular AI companions, looking for how often the reviews mentioned loneliness, as well as their ratings for the apps. We then looked at reviews for ChatGPT to make a comparison.
Our findings show that only 4% of ChatGPT reviews mentioned loneliness. But the companion apps turned in a much better showing, as high as 20%. The more mentions, the more people might use the apps to help with loneliness. They also received higher ratings. The implication is clear: AI companions can help people to reduce loneliness.
We then divided about 1,100 online participants into two groups. One group interacted daily with an AI companion; the other didn’t. Those who used the AI companion reported 14% points less loneliness on average. They said they felt heard and the AI companion offered emotional responses during their talks.
There is still the question of whether AI companions will be good for society. Some people fear, reasonably, that companions will turn people into shut-ins who avoid human contact. But any debate about the long-term impact of companions should account for their potential for reducing loneliness. Because we aren’t doing well as a society on loneliness, we should at least keep an open mind on any tool that helps at all.
28.What does the underlined phrase in paragraph 1 mean?
A.Attracting customers. B.Selecting assistants.
C.Employing programmers. D.Seeking sponsors.
29.What do we know about the new AI companion apps?
A.They may identify health problems. B.They function as well as AI assistants.
C.They can provide emotional support. D.They have been completely accepted.
30.How did the researchers carry out the first part of the study?
A.By doing online surveys. B.By conducting experiments.
C.By interviewing participants. D.By analyzing data.
31.What does the author intend to convey in the last paragraph?
A.Society should pay more attention to loneliness.
B.People may withdraw after using AI companions.
C.AI companions are worth trying though not perfect.
D.A debate on the effect of AI companions is necessary.
D
Why does one plus one equal two? One possible answer is “It just does!” Math can seem like a world of rules you just have to follow, which makes it seem rigid and boring. Whereas my love of math is somewhat driven by my love of breaking rules, or at least pushing against them.
Sometimes, one plus one can equal more than two. If you and your friend both have enough cash to buy one cup of coffee, then together you still might have enough to buy three. If one pair of tennis players gets together with another pair for an afternoon of tennis, there ends up being more than two pairs of tennis players because they could play in all sorts of different combinations.
Sometimes, one plus one is just one, like if you put a pile of sand on top of another pile of sand, then you just get on c pile of sand. Or, as an art student of mine pointed out, if you mix one color with one color, you get one color.
Actually, Math isn't really about getting the right answer. It's about building good justifications. I often hear parents complaining if children can do something one way, why do they need to know all these other ways?
Imagine we were designing a jungle gym for children. We'd want to test it in every possible way to make sure it's safe. We'd want to jump on it, swing from it, fall from it and try to pull it out of the ground, rather than simply trusting that we built it well. The solidity of math comes from not wanting to trust things, but wanting to jump and swing and know that our framework will hold up. One of the reasons the framework is so strong is preciscly because we question it so deeply.
I hope that we will start seeing mathematics as a place to pose questions and explore answers, rather than a place where the answers are fixed and we' re supposed to know them. And I hope we will place more emphasis on those who are curious, and who follow their curiosity on a journey that may be slow and without a clear destination, a quiet walk through the countryside rather than a race to the finish.
32.In what way does the author approach mathematical rules?
A.Thinking outside the box. B.Following them strictly.
C.Finding them entertaining. D.Recognizing their importance.
33.In the context of tennis players, what does the author mean by “one plus one can be more than two”?
A.Tennis players can teach each other new techniques.
B.More tennis equipment is needed for each additional player.
C.The enjoyment of tennis doubles when more players are involved.
D.Two pairs of tennis players can form multiple doubles combinations.
34.What is the purpose of mentioning the jungle gym in paragraph 5?
A.To simplify the complexity of mathematical learning.
B.To illustrate the value of diverse mathematical approaches.
C.To demonstrate that math is only useful in practical applications.
D.To argue that a single method is sufficient for understanding math.
35.What does the author hope for the future of mathematics?
A.It will become more rule-based. B.It will focus on getting the correct answer.
C.It will promote the joy of discovery. D.It will emphasize speed and efficiency.

Scientific studies show that screen addiction can lead to depression, anxiety, stress, worse educational results, and poor sleep among children. How do parents discourage screen addiction in children? 36
“I noticed that my children needed screens all the time. Finally, my husband and I decided that we needed to put a stop to this,” said Maggie. “ 37 Screens and phones had to be kept away while eating food, before bed, and outdoors,” the mom added. Two years later, both her children seem to use their devices for limited time.
38 I kept it hidden for 30 days during our summer holiday. It was all good; they didn’t even go to the phone or tablet after that. I replaced the devices with books. Now, I see them pick up books more easily, “said Pamela Nazareth, a mom of two sons.
“I get my child to stay away from mobiles and tablets by engaging with him. I take him outdoors or play indoors with him,” Tariq Rasheed, a dad of a seven-year-old, said. 39 Playing board games or engaging your child in activities like cleaning, cooking or gardening will keep them away from smartphones.
Annalisa Perego made it a point not to give her nine-year-old daughter extra tablet time as reward for good behavior or school marks. 40 So when you offer screen time in this way, you communicate that screen time is something to cover (渴望). In a 2019 Canadian University of Guelph study, researchers found children whose parents offer screen time as a reward spend more time on a smartphone, table t or computer than children whose parents don’t.
A.A reward by nature is something you want.
B.My approach was to hide the table t or phone.
C.The screens are useful for their online learning.
D.We spoke to some parents to find out their tested tips.
E.When they pushed for more screen time, we started saying no.
F.It is important to take the time out for bonding activities with children.
G.The best solution was to put a total ban on phones.

Simon was born with a very poor vision. However, to add insult to injury, Simon’s eyes are extremely sensitive to light, which is more frustrating. While others cheer and run outside on sunny days, Simon can only stay at home or wear his tightly wrapped sun hat.
At school, Simon was haunted by a deep sense of inferiority. In class, he never raised his hand, afraid of classmates’ eyes on him. He sat in silence as others participated in discussions and activities effortlessly, while he felt trapped in his own shell of self-doubt. He constantly compared himself to others and always found himself lacking. The weight of his insecurities made every day at school a struggle.
However, one’s life isn’t defined by these when faced with a particular set of circumstances. The best thing to do is accept them and act within the context.
For Simon, the particular was music, which brought him endless strength. When Simon played the piano, he could feel that every change in tone and rhythm created colorful sounds. The music came alive with soft and loud keys. For a boy with a sharp sense of hearing, these details transformed the performance into an emotionally charged experience.
One day in a music class, the whole class were listening to a piano piece while checking the notes in the music textbooks. Simon’s eyes were shining bright as he listened to the different instruments blend together. Suddenly, he frowned his brows. He quickly bent over the music textbook, searched through the lines in his music textbook and then pointed to a certain note. He caught a mistake. He looked in the teacher’s direction, wanting to say something, but then hesitated. He bit his lip and seemed to have made up his mind.
注意:
1. 续写词数应为150左右;
2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。

【原文】M: This afternoon my wife and I are going into town to get some travel books, so we can start thinking about our holiday this summer. We normally agree about where to go each year but this time we may have some problems finding some places that will satisfy both of us. Alice, my wife, has had a difficult year at work and she has already said to me that she wants to free herself for a couple of weeks in the countryside, breathing fresh air. As for me, I’d rather do something more active than that. I know I’ll get tired if we just stay on the beach all day. Yesterday a friend of mine showed me photographs of his holiday last year and I must say it looked very interesting. He and his wife hired a car for four weeks and went on a tour of Ireland, visiting different towns, sightseeing and sometimes walking along the river. The car was wide and equipped with everything that they needed for a short touring holiday, including a shower. I’ll mention it to Alice later on. She is likely to be happy with such an idea.

【答案】28.A 29.C 30.D 31.C
【导语】本文是一篇说明文你。文章主要介绍了AI伴侣应用程序的设计目的、功能、初步研究结果以及社会对AI伴侣的接受度和潜在担忧。

【答案】32.A 33.D 34.B 35.C
根据第一段“Whereas my love of math is somewhat driven by my love of breaking rules, or at least pushing against them.(然而,我对数学的热爱在某种程度上是由我喜欢打破规则,或者至少挑战它们的热爱所驱动的)”可知,作者对数学的热爱在某种程度上是由喜欢打破规则,或者至少挑战它们的热爱所驱动的。由此推知,作者对数学规则的态度是跳出固有思维。故选A。

34.推理判断题。根据第五段“Imagine we were designing a jungle gym for children. One of the reasons the framework is so strong is preciscly because we question it so deeply.(想象一下,我们为孩子们设计一个丛林游乐场。
根据最后一段“I hope that we will start seeing mathematics as a place to pose questions and explore answers, rather than a place where the answers are fixed and we' re supposed to know them (我希望我们将开始把数学视为一个提出问题和探索答案的地方,而不是一个答案固定且我们应该知道它们的地方)”可知,作者希望数学的未来能够促进发现的乐趣。故选C。

阅读下面短文, 从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
【答案】36.D 37.E 38.B 39.F 40.A

第二节(满分25分)
67.阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
注意:
1. 续写词数应为150左右;
2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
Finally, Simon raised his hand, and the teacher stopped the music.
_____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
After class, Simon was surrounded by his admiring classmates.
_____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】
Finally, Simon raised his hand, and the teacher stopped the music. “Yes, Simon?” the teacher asked, surprised by his sudden action. Simon took a deep breath and said, “I think there’s a mistake in the music. The note played doesn’t match the one in the textbook.” The teacher, intrigued, replayed the section and checked the textbook. To everyone’s surprise, Simon was right. The teacher praised Simon for his keen sense of hearing and encouraged him to share more in class. Simon felt a wave of pride wash over him, realizing that his unique ability was valuable.
After class, Simon was surrounded by his admiring classmates. They were amazed by his musical talent and began asking him questions about music. For the first time, Simon felt included and appreciated. His classmates’ admiration boosted his confidence, and he started to participate more in class. Simon realized that his differences made him special, and he no longer felt inferior. Music had not only given him strength but also a voice, and he was ready to use it.
①深呼吸:take a deep breath/breath deeply
②鼓励:encourage/motivate
③参与:participate/engage in
情绪类
①惊讶的:surprised/astonished
②感兴趣的:intrigued/interested
【点睛】[高分句型1]Simon felt a wave of pride wash over him, realizing that his unique ability was valuable.(that引导的宾语从句)
[高分句型2]Simon realized that his differences made him special, and he no longer felt inferior.(that引导的宾语从句)
