Portfolio Plus Program
The Portfolio Plus Program invites senior high school students to take college-level art and design courses. With guidance from Sam Fox School’s teachers, you’ll work throughout our three-week program to develop a strong collection of works that is helpful for college admission.
Curriculum
Each weekday morning, you’ll attend Drawing Fundamentals, where you’ll use various media to learn the fundamentals of line, composition, form, space and modeling. Demonstrations and illustrated lectures enrich studio sessions.
During the afternoon session, you’ll pursue your choice of one of the three following courses:
● Communication Design: Positioned at illustration and interaction design, this course will teach you visual problem-solving using elements of two-dimensional design, like composition, color and image making.
● Fashion Design: The course focuses on the relationship between clothing and contemporary culture. You’ll begin by learning to illustrate your designs two-dimensionally. Drawings translate into wearable artworks, with a focus on construction, proportion (比例) and form.
● Studio Art: The course explores techniques and strategies for working across disciplines in visual art. With an emphasis on experimentation, the course will explore how the interrelation of form, content, materials, and process gives work its meaning.
Also, we’ll bring you, participants, to some top museums, galleries, and historic sites in the city.
Application
● Students apply for the program online through Slate, the program’s online application system.
● Requirements include an essay, a letter of recommendation, optional samples of your work, and an application fee of $35.

Thousands rushed the West in the settlement era, chasing land and prosperity. Few of those hopeful homes remain today. But just outside Sheridan, Wyoming, stands a rare exception: The Stone House, a sandstone home built in 1898 that appears frozen in time. So far, the home has had eight owners. In history, it witnessed the hardships of drought, the agricultural collapse and the Great Depression. Hard times hit many of the owners, but the house itself has survived.
The home’s newest owner is Brian Nix, who says he was drawn to this corner of Wyoming after a near-fatal illness in 2015. Nix’s illness left him feeling that he was being called to another place on earth. Year after year, he restlessly sought such a place but in vain. Until one beautiful day in June, he stood in front of The Stone House. Looking at a house from a time so long past but so well-preserved, he felt it was like standing in front of a miracle. His heart told him it was “The One”.
Nix has a background in construction, so he knew exactly all that this old house needed was for humans not to intervene too much. Nix is looking at opportunities to restore the home with minimum changes. He even brings back the items that once belonged to the house. He doesn’t know what else will be uncovered at The Stone House. But he does know whatever else he does find will just add to the mystery of this home.
Today, the Sheridan Community Land Trust is grateful to Nix for his foresight and commitment to preserving the Stone House. His efforts ensure that this home’s stories of hardship, resilience (恢复力) and everyday Wyoming life will continue to live on. If Nix has his way, it’s a view — and a story — that Wyomingites will get to enjoy for another 1,000 years to come.
4. What makes The Stone House special?
A. It has remained largely unchanged over time.
B. It symbolized prosperity in local culture.
C. It has had eight owners since the 19th century.
D. It was built during the Great Depression.
5. How did Nix feel when seeing the house?
A. Amused. B. Honored. C. Struck. D. Stressed.
6. What can we learn about Nix’s restoration of the house?
A. He repairs it with some construction workers.
B. He rebuilds it without turning to experts.
C. He restores it with the original design plan.
D. He preserves it without over-disturbing it.
7. What can be inferred about the house’s future from the last paragraph?
A. It will be managed by the government.
B. Its history will be passed down for ages.
C. It will inspire local people’s commitment.
D. Its future is guaranteed by the Land Trust.
【答案】4. A 5. C 6. D 7. B

C
Why do we keep pets? For many families today, pets are often regarded as “one of the family”. However, two centuries ago, keeping pets was the privilege of the rich. While increasing wealth has enabled more people to keep animals, this alone cannot explain the rise in pet ownership. Surveys show emotional attachment. This passion comes from our nature, as even early tribes (部落) kept animals as companions.
As a biologist, I grew up without pets. However, my wife introduced me to dogs and cats, and showed me the joy they could bring. As I spent more time observing them in a new way, I discovered that their behaviors are a mix of wild instincts (本能) and habits learned from humans. It made me realize that biology alone cannot fully explain this. We must also consider the owners’ minds.
Most owners talk to their pets as little people. Our brains naturally project human intentions and emotions onto pets. Sometimes these projections are accurate, but often they are imaginative. When expectations are not met, we feel disappointed. These unconscious projections often shape how we interpret our pets’ behavior, sometimes leading us to misunderstand what they are actually communicating.
This realization led to “anthrozoology”. In the 1980s, a few of us coined the term to study the “human-animal bond”. We established the International Society for Anthrozoology. Today, students can earn qualifications in this field from universities worldwide. It brings together biologists, psychologists and scientists to study our relationships with animals.
I have been writing this book for over twenty years. The more I studied pet owners, the more fascinated I became. Interestingly, though pets lost their practical uses, their numbers actually exploded. Our fascination with them runs deeper than fashion. Using various sources and my own research, I examined the scientific reasons for keeping pets. This book is the result.
8. According to paragraph 1, why do people keep pets?
A. To satisfy a natural need. B. To display the owners’ wealth.
C. To continue a past tradition. D. To cooperate with animals.
9. What can we learn about owners’ talking to their pets?
A. It enriches human imagination. B. It shapes human emotions.
C. It promotes human well-being. D. It reflects human thoughts.
10. What can be inferred about the field of anthrozoology?
A. It developed quickly in the 1980s. B. It involves different fields of study.
C. It mainly deals with family pets. D. It offers biology qualifications.
11. What is the main idea of paragraph 5?
A. How this book came into being. B. When people started keeping pets.
C. What caused pet numbers to rise. D. Why pets lost their practical uses.
【答案】8. A 9. D 10. B 11. A
【解析】

Bosses fed up with candidate ghosting (人间蒸发) and looking through thousands of applications may have a new assistant for the tough selection process: using artificial intelligence (AI) to interview the applicants. And the tools are benefiting job seekers as well, according to new research led by the University of Chicago Booth School of Business.
Many hiring managers are at the mercy of catfishing, where final candidates accept a job offer only to never show up. However, it isn’t just applicants who are engaging in ghosting; it’s become a workplace practice on both sides. A separate Glassdoor study found that around 27% of applicants never even heard back after completing a final round interview.
When given the choice, 78% of job applicants picked the AI interviewer over a human recruiter (招聘人员). Applicants interviewed by an AI voice agent were 12% more likely to accept a job offer than those screened by human interviewers, according to the analysis. Plus, candidates screened by the technology were more likely to actually start their jobs and stick around for more than 30 days.
Why is AI winning at hiring? The researchers found that these tools were able to cover more ground in interviews because they’re able to get to the point. As a result, applicants can produce richer answers. Applicants who spoke to AI recruiters received job offers in 9.73% of the cases, compared to 8.7% under human recruiters.
For younger job seekers, using a robot in an interview process may not be such a scary feeling. Having studied, communicated and worked largely online, many are already comfortable with digital interactions, making AI interviewers seem like a natural extension of that experience.
But while AI interviewers have proved to help job seekers succeed in landing a role, not everyone is so accepting of the new technology. Candidates rated the interaction as less “natural” compared to talking with a human. In 7% of the cases, the applicants encountered technical issues. And about 5% of applicants even ended their interviews once they realized they were speaking with AI.
12. Which of the following best explains “catfishing” underlined in paragraph 2?
A. Escaping work stress. B. Breaking one’s promise.
C. Hiding one’s identity. D. Accepting an invitation.
13. What advantage do AI interviewers have?
A. They offer more detailed responses. B. They are more friendly and natural.
C. They create a livelier atmosphere. D. They make interviews more effective.
14. What do younger job seekers think of AI interviewers?
A. Acceptable. B. Annoying. C. Complicated. D. Creative.
15. Which of the following is the best title for the text?
A. Job Seekers’ Passion for AI Interviewing B. The Trend of Future Interviewing
C. The Rise of AI in Interviewing D. Challenges in AI Interviewing
【答案】12. B 13. D 14. A 15. C
【解析】
【导语】文章介绍越来越多企业开始用AI面试官筛选求职者,分析AI面试更高效、更受年轻求职者接受等优势,同时指出其存在的争议与技术问题。
【12题详解】
词句猜测题。根据第二段中的“Many hiring managers are at the mercy of catfishing, where final candidates accept a job offer only to never show up.(许多招聘经理深受catfishing之苦,在这种行为中,进入终轮的候选人接受了一份工作录用,结果却再也不露面)”可知,where引导的定语从句是对catfishing的解释:候选人答应录用却不报到,这是一种违约行为。故猜测划线词意为“食言,违约”。
【13题详解】
细节理解题。根据第四段中的“The researchers found that these tools were able to cover more ground in interviews because they're able to get to the point. As a result, applicants can produce richer answers. Applicants who spoke to AI recruiters received job offers in 9.73% of the cases, compared to 8.7% under human recruiters.(研究人员发现,这些工具能够在面试中覆盖更多内容,因为它们能够开门见山。结果,求职者能够给出更丰富的回答。与AI招聘人员交谈的求职者在9.73%的案例中获得了工作录用,而在人类招聘人员下面试获得录用的比例为8.7%)”可知,AI面试官说话直奔主题、覆盖面更广、求职者回答更丰富、录用率更高,即面试效率更高、更有效。
【14题详解】
推理判断题。根据第五段中的“For younger job seekers, using a robot in an interview process may not be such a scary feeling. Having studied, communicated and worked largely online, many are already comfortable with digital interactions, making AI interviewers seem like a natural extension of that experience.(对于年轻求职者来说,在面试过程中使用机器人可能并不是一种那么可怕的感觉。
It’s easy to assume that achieving a consistently clean home requires marathon cleaning sessions, but actually maintaining a clean and tidy space often comes down to small, consistent actions. ____16____ It’s an excellent example of setting simple micro-habits, which allows you to create a year-round tidy home without stress.
Fifteen minutes feels manageable because it removes the mental barrier of “I don’t have time to clean” and replaces it with a realistic commitment you can keep each day — small but consistent actions. ____17____ As a result, messes won’t pile up and turn into major cleaning projects. Think of it as maintenance (维护), not deep cleaning. You’re simply resetting your space each day, ensuring it never gets out of control. So, how does it work? The following ideas can help.
____18____ One day might be the kitchen, another day the living room, and the next day can be the bathroom. You can also carry out tasks like wiping surfaces, or cleaning up one junk drawer at a time. Consequently, every part of your home receives proper care throughout the week.
Pair your 15-minute clean-up with something you already do each day. For example, wipe the table and load the dishes after dinner, or do one load of laundry right when you get home from work. But remember to set a timer and stop when it goes off. ____19____
Get the whole household involved. A tidy home is easier to maintain when everyone participates. Assign age-appropriate tasks to children or quick responsibilities to other adults in the household. ____20____ When cleaning becomes a shared daily routine, it feels lighter and more sustainable.
A. Focus on one area or task at a time.
B. Done daily, those small efforts add up.
C. This is where the 15-minute daily clean-up comes in.
D. Don’t skip the daily cleaning just because you’re busy.
E. Over time, you may find some areas need extra attention.
F. Knowing there’s a clear endpoint keeps the task from feeling endless.
G. Even five minutes of effort from each person can make a big difference.
【答案】16. C 17. B 18. A 19. F 20. G

第二节(满分25分)
47. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
When I came to college, I discovered video games as a way to relax. The virtual world gave me a feeling of control and success that seemed hard to find in real life. My roommates often invited me to study together, but I’d say “one more round” — which usually turned into three or four.
Gradually, gaming started to take time away from my study. I stayed up late playing, woke up tired, and struggled to concentrate in class. I made up excuses to ask for leave from the morning lectures, telling myself I’d catch up later. But I didn’t. Assignments piled up, and I ended up doing them in a rush at the last minute. My grades, once above average, began to drop — not failing, but clearly lower. I knew I was spending too much time gaming, yet I told myself I could stop whenever I wanted. But every time I tried to cut back, the attraction of the next round pulled me back in. I felt stuck between the screen and my study.
Then one morning, I got an email from my academic advisor. It was an academic warning — my grade point average (GPA) had been below 2.5 for two semesters in a row. GPA is on a 4.0 scale. Usually, 2.0 is the minimum to pass, and 3.0 or above is considered good. I had to meet my advisor and make a study plan within a month. The words shocked me.
That night, I sat at my desk without turning on the game. I looked at my calendar — missed deadlines, unread chapters, and blank notebooks. I saw my reflection in the dark screen: tired and guilty. A question I’d been avoiding came to me: Is this really who I want to be? I had no answer, but for the first time, I was ready to find one.
注意:
(1)续写词数应为150个左右;
(2)请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
The next morning, I walked into my advisor’s office.
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
A month later, I began to see changes in both my life and study.
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】One possible version:
The next morning, I walked into my advisor’s office. Nervous and ashamed, I told her honestly how video games had robbed me of my study time and ruined my self-discipline. Instead of scolding me, she listened patiently and helped me work out a practical plan. We set fixed hours for study and rest, and I promised to limit gaming to only one hour on weekends as a reward. She also suggested I join my roommates’ study group again to stay accountable. I left the office with a clear goal and a strong determination to get back on track.
A month later, I began to see changes in both my life and study. I no longer stayed up late gaming. With steady effort, I could focus better in class and finish tasks ahead of deadlines. My anxiety faded away and my confidence returned. I still enjoyed games occasionally, but they were no longer my escape from reality. I realized true satisfaction came from small progress in my studies rather than virtual victories. Most importantly, I regained control of my own life.

D. Creative.
