B Photographs allow one to perfectly remember how a certain memory looked in great detail. From journaling daily for over a year, I have found that writing daily has allowed me to perfectly remember a feeling. My journaling journey began when I took a creative writing class at my local community college. Our teacher had a required journaling element (部分) in which we had to buy a notebook and aim to write every day about anything we wished. At first, writing daily was a boring task. I was always trying to find things to write about. I wrote on what I did that day or some news I found online. People say it takes 21 days to form a habit, and I can prove that they are correct. After the first month or so, I would wake up every morning looking forward to making my cup of coffee, sitting down at my desk and writing down everything that happened the previous day. And I have been doing it ever since. Passing the one year mark, I have now filled up almost five journals. This morning, I reread every single one of them and was moved to tears. I can see the ways in which I have changed and grown as a person. Many people complain that they have nothing to write about or they simply don’t have the time to pick up the practice of journaling. I am here to tell you to banish thoughts that your life is not interesting enough or you don’t have enough time-you have thoughts, emotions and experiences that are worthwhile. One day, you will want to remember something as simple as how you felt when you woke up one Sunday morning. 56. Why does the author mention photographs in paragraph 1? A. To show the importance of recording B. To bring up the topic of journaling. C. To encourage readers to practice photographing. D. To prove that photographing differs from journaling. 57. The author began journaling because ________. A. it was the task of her writing class B. she had interesting things to write about C. she wanted to improve her writing skills D. her teacher asked her to find a way to practice writing 58. At the beginning, the author thought writing daily was ________. A meaningful B. fresh C. creative D. difficult 59. How did the author find journaling at the end of the first month? A. It was eye-opening B. It was a very boring task. C. It was something she expected to do. D. It was more difficult than she had thought. 60. What does the underlined word “banish” in the last paragraph probably mean? A. Go over. B. Figure out. C. Drive away. D. Write down. C In a study published in Nature Communications, researchers from the University of Zurich told 50 people they’d be receiving about $100. Half of the people were asked to spend that money on themselves, and half were asked to spend it on someone they knew. Before giving out any money, the researchers brought everyone into the lab and asked them to think about a friend they’d like to give a gift to and how much they would spend. They then performed functional MRI scans (扫描) to get to know activity in three parts of the brain related to social behavior, generosity, happiness and decision-making. Their choices-and their brain activity-seemed to depend on how they had promised to spend the money earlier. Those who had promised to spend money on other people tended to make more generous decisions throughout the experiment (实验). They also had more interaction between the parts of the brain related to altruism (无私) and happiness, and they reported higher levels of happiness after the experiment was over. Another piece of good news was that planning to give away just a little bit of money had the same effects on happiness as giving away a lot. “At least in our study the amount spent did not matter,” says lead author Philippe Tobler. “Even little things have a beneficial effect-like bringing coffee to one’s workmates.” It’s not yet clear how long these warm feelings last after being generous. But studies have shown that older people who are generous tend to have better health, says Tobler, and other research has suggested that spending money on others can be effective at lowering blood pressure. “Moreover there is a positive connection between helping others and life expectancy (预期寿命),” he adds. Next time you think that the best way to make yourself feel better is to buy yourself a treat, consider that the opposite is likely true. “It is worth giving it a try, even if you think it would not work,” Tobler says. “Repeated practice is probably needed so that giving becomes second nature.” 61. What did the researchers find out about those promising to spend money on other people? A. They were much happier. B. They had less brain activity. C. They were slower at making decisions. D. They experienced higher levels of stress. 62. What does Tobler want to explain by mentioning bringing coffee to workmates? A. It isn’t hard to behave generously. B. Being generous will pay off in the end. C. The amount of generosity did not matter. D. Small acts of generosity can be seen everywhere. 63. What does paragraph 4 mainly tell us? A. Ways to show generosity. B. Health benefits of being generous. C. Reasons for performing acts of generosity. D. Influences generous people have on others. 64. What does Tobler suggest people do in the last paragraph? A. Practice giving and make it a habit. B. Don’t expect anything in return when giving. C. Don’t believe happiness depends on a good treat. D. Perform something good even if it may have a bad result. 65. In which part of a magazine can we probably find this text? A. Sports. B. Science. C. Education. D. Coached by his mother who was 81 at the time, Cliff Young started the marathon with work shoes and work clothes. Competing against world-class marathon runners who were backed up by big sports companies and spent hundreds of hours preparing for the race, Cliff Young’s training method was just running after his sheep. He told the organizers that if he could run after his sheep for a few days, he could surely compete with other runners. The ultramarathon generally took 5 days to complete and this potato farmer’s decision seemed suicidal. In fact, some tried to stop him from running the super-difficult race because they thought Cliff Young could die because of the heat and fatigue (疲劳). After all, he was 61 years old! To cut the story short, Cliff Young managed to finish the race. While the young racers slept, he continued to race throughout the night. The young athletes left him far behind until the very last night where he finally led the marathon. Not only did Cliff Young, a 61-year-old potato farmer, survive the race, but he even managed to win the marathon and actually broke the race record by 9 hours! He even gave away his prize money to the rest of the runners after him. After the win, he continued to run in many ultramarathon races and even set standards in the world of endurance (耐力) racing. His running style, named “The Young Shuffle”, is a famous running technique (技巧) used by many runners in the world today. Cliff Young showed that being old is not a problem, and being a champion doesn’t mean you need to have super-human strength, just super-human will. 76. A. “At least in our study, the amount spent did not matter,” says lead author Philippe Tobler. After the win he continued to run in many ultramarathon races and even set standards in the world of endurance (耐力) racing. His running style, named “The Young Shuffle”, is a famous running technique (技巧) used by many runners in the world today.
