It aims to help people regain time for the things that have value and meaning to them.
Both authors once worked at Google —Jake helped develop products like Google Meet, while John worked on the design of YouTube Channels. However, for those with some flexibility, Make Time offers tools to help make the most of their time, focusing on meaningful activities and building productive habits.

A new study suggests that cats can even learn to make a connection between the words we use for objects or images (影像),and they pick this up faster than our own babies do.
Previous (以前的) research has shown cats can follow human pointing, and they understand who is on their team, who they can trust, and who decides to give them food. We also know they can recognize their own names.
Cats can even learn the names of cats and people they know. “I was very surprised, because that meant cats were able to listen to people’s conversations without them knowing and understand words without any special training,” says Saho Takagi, a scientist at Azabu University and member of the 2022 study. She wondered: Do cats have a natural ability to learn human language?
To find out, the team gave a word test to 31 adult pet cats, by putting each one in front of a laptop showing two short cartoon animations (动画), while an audio track (音轨) of the cat’s caregiver saying a made-up word was played.
Most cats were used to the pairing after four tests. When the cats were tired of this, they were given a break before the next round, in which the images and audio were played four more times, with a slight change: half the images had the ‘wrong’ audio. The cats showed signs of confusion when they noticed a mismatch, spending 33 percent more time looking at the screen when this happened. “Some cats even looked fixedly at the screen during the changed condition,” Takagi told Science. “Cats pay attention to what we say in everyday life—and try to understand us—more than we realize.”
While these experiments suggest cats might be able to make a connection between human words and images even faster than human babies do, there are a few key differences between the 1990s experiment on babies and this new study. The babies, for example, were only given words spoken by a stranger. The cats, on the other hand, heard words spoken by their own caregivers.
According to the authors, further research into whether these abilities are shared or unique could help us understand communication across different species (物种).
12. What surprised Takagi about cats according to paragraph 3?
A. Their recognition of their own names. B. Their untrained word understanding ability.
C. Their great communication skills. D. Their ability to follow human pointing.
13. Why did the Takagi’s team conduct the word test?
A. To study cats’ preferences. B. To improve cats’ skills.
C. To test cats’ language abilities. D. To show cats’ behavior
14. What did the cats do when they heard mismatched audio?
A. They ignored the mismatch. B. They watched the screen longer.
C. They slept through the test D. They looked around quickly.
15. What could further research help us do?
A. Change the performance of cats B. Improve communication skills.
C. Focus on the caregivers’ words. D. Understand cross-species communication.

【答案】12. B 13. C 14. B 15. D

It’s strange, but I’ve discovered I have a better sense of direction than many people. I used to think maybe it was something you were born with or not, but I’m now sure that it’s the skill you can learn. ____16____ I hope this helps those who feel lost.
●Look at a map for a few minutes.
____17____ Is there a river, lake or sea shore? Is there a big central park, or several big parks? Where is the downtown area? What are the major neighborhoods? Major roads? What’s to the north or south?
●Form a mental map.
When you look at a map for a few minutes, and then walk around, what you’re doing is forming a mental map of the city. At first, it’s very vague (模糊的). ____18____
●Keep your direction as you walk around.
When you walk to a place, or even hang out aimlessly, it’s easy to get lost. Instead, if you make a left turn, think,“Oh, now I’m going west,” and also remember where your landmark (地标) is in relation to where you are. For example, if you start out heading straight for the Eiffel Tower, but then turn left, that means it is now on your right. Your mental map should change a bit too, so you’re now facing south instead of west. ____19____
●Mark the major streets in your mental map.
Every neighborhood has its major streets, with shopping and restaurants and the like. ____20____ You should get to the point where you can point the direction of these major streets, and even know generally how many blocks to get to them.
That might seem like a lot, but after a while, this all becomes second nature. Happy wandering, my friends.
A. Look at the map again.
B. I’ve broken it into several steps.
C. This is the best way to know street names.

【答案】One possible version:
Dear Li Hua,
You have asked me for my advice on how to make new friends at school. I’m writing to offer some personal suggestions.
To begin with, it is advisable to join school clubs or take part in school activities, where you can meet like-minded individuals. What’s more, don’t be afraid to start a conversation, which is an effective way to get to know each other. Last but not least, it is also important to be open and friendly. Greeting people you meet with a smile can make a difference.
I do hope you will find these suggestions helpful. Looking forward to your early reply.
Yours,
Chris
