For most people, having something important stolen feels like a disaster. Robbie Pruitt admitted when his mountain bike was stolen last September, he got mad. But soon his emotions took a turn. After letting go of his anger, he found himself on a road to sympathy (同情) instead.
As a biker, Pruitt’s first priority was to buy one again, but when he went bike shopping, he found the pickings slim. The shortage in supply got him thinking: What if the person who’d taken his bike had done so because he truly needed bikes to get to work?
With that thought in mind, Pruitt came up with a plan and posted it to a local Facebook group. He offered to fix bikes free of charge for anyone who needed it. Pruitt also put out a call for bikes people don’t use, which he would repair—again for free—and then donate to people who could truly use them but didn’t have the budget to buy a bike.
The day the post went live, Pruitt was excited about a list of 30 used bicycles. And this was followed by more than 500 posts from people who either had bikes to donate or that needed fixing soon after. By the end of the month, Pruitt had repaired more than 140 bikes for donation.
Pruitt tries to give his donations to struggling families. Beyond simply satisfying a material need, he has provided an opportunity for kids in his neighborhood to learn how to fix their own bikes.
In addition to practical skills, Pruitt’s lessons teach teamwork, encourage self-esteem, and develop feelings of community. “Pruitt is certainly providing a service, but it’s not the bikes. It’s the relationships in the community. It’s the impact he made on people. All the neighborhood kids are spending a lot more time doing something that’s in their power,” Pruitt’s next-door neighbor Danny told The Washington Post.
4. How did Pruitt feel after he went to the bikeshop?
A. He was angry at the theft. B. He became eager for a new bike.
C. He would rather find his old bike. D. He tried to put himself in the thief’s shoes.
5. Why did Pruitt put out a call?
A. To find his lost bike. B. To collect old bikes.
C. To raise some money for charity. D. To advertise his bike repair shop.
6. Which of the following best describes Robbie Pruitt?
A. Caring and inspiring. B. Considerate and loyal.
C. Outgoing and brave. D. Responsible and humorous.
7. Which of the following can be the best title for the text?
A. Robbie Pruitt: A Bike Repairman.
B. A Bike Thief: A Trouble Maker.
C. A Kind Act: Inspiration From A Stolen Bike.
D. Bike Shopping: An Unexpected Adventure.

Published in the journal Sleep by Mary Carskadon at Brown University and her colleagues, a new study set out to answer an age-old mystery: why do teenagers stay up so late, and why is it so hard to get them out of bed in the morning?
Many people believe that social forces like school pressures and partying pleasures are to blame (责备). Carskadon, however, doubted that biological (生物的) elements might be responsible. To test that guess, she surveyed 2,000 schoolchildren across the US on their preferred and actual bedtimes and their physical development, wake times, the times of day when they felt most or least active, and their physical development.
The results pointed to biology. Sixth-graders (aged 11 or 12) scored higher on “eveningness” and lower on “morningness” than younger children, even though they were in the same social environment. Therefore, Carskadon and her team concluded, the practice of ringing the morning bell earlier at middle schools (for 11 - to 13-year-olds) and high schools (for ages 14 to 18) than at elementary schools “may run counter to children’s biological needs”.
In response, a growing number of US cities began pushing back start times in middle and high schools. In 2019, California became the first US state to pass laws supporting later start times, followed by Florida in May. Meanwhile, other countries, including Australia and South Korea have made similar changes.
This is certainly a significant step towards improving teens’ mental and physical health. Yet later school start times alone may not be enough to stop teenagers from sleeping late. If teens stay up till dawn on their phones, or don’t have a quiet place to sleep, even a 10 am start can do little good.
That is why some people argue that schools should include courses on evidence-based practices to improve sleep. In small studies, researchers at the University of Oxford have found that such courses can significantly improve sleep quality, even for children from low-income (收入) families who initially reported poor sleep.
8. What did Carskadon and her colleagues try to prove?
A. The problems with existing theories. B. The effective ways to wake up teens.
C. The true causes of teens’ late sleep. D. The impact of late sleep on teens’ learning.
9. Which of the following can replace the underlined part “run counter to” in paragraph 3?
A go against B. agree with C. depend on D. focus on
10. What is the attitude of the authorities towards Carskadon’s conclusion?
A. Disapproving. B. Doubtful. C. Favorable. D. Unconcerned.
11. What can be inferred from the last paragraph?
A. Sleep education fails to work as expected.
B. Evidence-based sleep education matters.
C. Sleep education in schools is easy to improve.
D. Sleep courses do little good to poor children.
D
Rogues (疯狗浪), called “extreme storm waves” by scientists, are large, unexpected, and dangerous waves that are at least twice as high as the other waves around them, according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). These abnormal waves, which happen every day and all over the world, are highly unpredictable (不可预测地) and can destroy ships that meet with them.
Rogue waves appear to form when large rough waves pass through one another, forming huge walls of water, according to NOAA. However, why and where they appear is unclear. But using 700 years’ worth of ocean data including historical records and data in 158 locations around the world, researchers have now created a system for predicting these “huge beasts”.
The system used Al to assess various elements that might lead to rogue waves. The team trained a neural (神经的) network using historical wave data. This generated a system that learned the causes of rogue waves by itself and could work to predict them. But the Al’s methods were hid in a black box. This means scientists couldn’t know how the Al did its workings. So Hiatfner’s team used a different machine learning method that provides an equation (综合体) when given data, rather than just a single prediction , helping the researchers to understand how the AI reached its predictions.
“Our analysis shows that abnormal waves occur all the time. In fact, we collected 100,000 waves in our data set that can be named as rogue waves by definition (定义),” Hafner said. This system effectively shows the sign of a rogue wave, Hafner added, and can better protect ships from being destroyed as they sail around the world. Ship companies can use the device with the system to predict when and where rogue waves might appear to seek an alternative course.
12. How does the author introduce the topic?
A. By using an example. B. By giving a definition.
C. By drawing a comparison. D. By making an assumption.
13. What can the system do according to paragraph 2?
A. Monitor huge sea creatures. B. Guide ships around in the sea.
C. Prevent rogue waves from occurring. D. Predict the hitting of rogue waves.
14. What is the disadvantage of the AI’s methods?
A. They are invisible. B. They depend on too many elements.
C. They make incorrect predictions. D. They don’t deal with data system.
15. How does Hafner find the system?
A. It requires more field tests. B. It has been widely used.
C. It needs further improvement. D. It has a promising future.

My love for dance began when I was very young and I would dream to be a star dancer from time to time. With the drama festival approaching, the school’s drama club had released a notice for the dancer audition (试镜) for The Twelve Dancing Princesses. And of course I was the first one to sign up.
As I left the stage after my audition at school, I could feel it. The power. The future. I knew that someday when dancers’ magazines wrote about me, they would say this moment was when my rise to a star began.
My ballet slippers hurt my feet, but I figured that was helpful. In The Twelve Dancing Princesses, the princesses danced all night so they probably had foot pain, too. My performance was more genuine because of my pain. I needed to show my devotion even when I wasn’t on stage, so I approached Mr. Ellison, the drama club advisor. He told me that casting (角色分配) will be posted tomorrow.“ Thank you, sir,” I said, using the almost British pronunciation of Hollywood stars in the 1940s. I was so sure that Mr. Ellison would cast me as a princess.
The next morning, I went to read the cast list. The twelve princesses were first, by number. I scanned from One to Twelve, but none by me. At the bottom of the casting list, my name finally appeared. My role was a really small one, an old woman who helped a soldier, not one of the princesses! I was desperately disappointed. Mr. Ellison must have made a mistake! No one else in the school had my skills or preparation!.
I found him in his classroom, but he insisted there was no mistake and emphasized that every role in a play was important. Unable to accept the fact, I burst into tears. Mr. Ellison managed to calm me down and encouraged me to have a try in the rehearsal (排练).
注意:1. 续写词数应为 150个左右;
The next day, I dragged myself to the rehearsal.

根据文章第二段“What if the person who’d taken his bike had done so because he truly needed bikes to get to work?(如果偷他自行车的人这么做是因为他真的需要自行车去上班呢?)”
根据文章第三段“Pruitt also put out a call for bikes people don’t use, which he would repair—again for free—and then donate to people who could truly use them but didn’t have the budget to buy a bike.(Pruitt还呼吁人们捐赠不再使用的自行车,他会免费修理这些自行车,然后捐赠给那些真正需要但预算不足购买自行车的人。)”
根据文章第五段“Pruitt tries to give his donations to struggling families. Beyond simply satisfying a material need, he has provided an opportunity for kids in his neighborhood to learn how to fix their own bikes.( Pruitt试图将他的捐赠物送给生活困难的家庭。除了满足物质需求外,他还为邻居的孩子们提供了学习如何修理自行车的机会。)”和文章最后一段“In addition to practical skills, Pruitt’s lessons teach teamwork, encourage self-esteem, and develop feelings of community.(除了实践技能外,Pruitt的课程还教授团队合作,鼓励自尊,并培养社区归属感。)” 故选A。
C“A Kind Act: Inspiration From A Stolen Bike”(一个善举:从一辆被盗的自行车中获得的灵感)最能概括文章的主旨。故选C。

A. go against B. agree with C. depend on D. focus on
C 9. A 10. C 11. B
根据文章第一段“Published in the journal Sleep by Mary Carskadon at Brown University and her colleagues, a new study set out to answer an age-old mystery: why do teenagers stay up so late, and why is it so hard to get them out of bed in the morning?(由布朗大学的Mary Carskadon及其同事发表在《Sleep》杂志上的一项新研究旨在回答一个古老的谜团:为什么青少年总是熬夜,并且早上很难起床?)”
根据上文的“Sixth-graders (aged 11 or 12) scored higher on “eveningness” and lower on “morningness” than younger children, even though they were in the same social environment(尽管处于相同的社会环境中,六年级学生(11或12岁)在“晚间表现”上的得分高于低年级学生,而在“晨间表现”上的得分则低于低年级学生。)” 而画线词前的“the practice of ringing the morning bell earlier at middle schools (for11-to 13-year-olds) and high schools (for ages 14 to 18) than at elementary schools(中学(针对11至13岁学生)和高中(针对14至18岁学生)比小学更早敲响早自习铃声)”显然是与这一结果相悖的,“run counter to”在这里的意思是“与……相悖”或“与……相反”。选项中,只有A项“go against”与这个意思相符。故选A。
根据文章第四段“In response, a growing number of US cities began pushing back start times in middle and high schools. In 2019, California became the first US state to pass laws supporting later start times, followed by Florida in May. Meanwhile, other countries, including Australia and South Korea have made similar changes.(作为回应,越来越多的美国城市开始推迟中学和高中的上课时间。2019年,加利福尼亚州成为美国第一个通过法律支持推迟上课时间的州,随后在5月份佛罗里达州也通过了类似法律。与此同时,包括澳大利亚和韩国在内的其他国家也做出了类似的改变。)”可知,当局对Carskadon的结论持支持态度,因为越来越多的城市和州开始推迟学校的上课时间,这与Carskadon的结论是一致的。故选C。
【11题详解】
推理判断题。根据文章最后一段“That is why some people argue that schools should include courses on evidence-based practices to improve sleep. In small studies, researchers at the University of Oxford have found that such courses can significantly improve sleep quality, even for children from low-income (收入) families who initially reported poor sleep.(这就是为什么有些人认为学校应该开设基于证据的睡眠改善课程。在小型研究中,牛津大学的研究人员发现,这样的课程可以显著改善睡眠质量,甚至对最初报告睡眠质量较差的低收入家庭儿童也有效。)”可以推断出基于证据的睡眠教育对于改善青少年的睡眠质量是非常重要的。故选B。

B 13. D 14. A 15. D

根据文章第二段“But using 700 years’ worth of ocean data including historical records and data in 158 locations around the world, researchers have now created a system for predicting these “huge beasts”. (但是,通过使用包括历史记录和全球158个地点的数据在内的700年海洋数据,研究人员现在已经创建了一个预测这些“巨大野兽”的系统。)”可知,该系统可以预测疯狗浪的袭击。故选D。
【14题详解】
细节理解题。根据文章第三段“But the AI’s methods were hid in a black box. This means scientists couldn’t know how the AI did its workings .(但是,AI的方法隐藏在一个黑箱中。这意味着科学家们无法知道AI是如何工作的。)”可知,AI的方法的缺点是它们是不可见的。故选A。
根据文章最后一段“This system effectively shows the sign of a rogue wave, Hafner added, and can better protect ships from being destroyed as they sail around the world. Ship companies can use the device with the system to predict when and where rogue waves might appear to seek an alternative course.

注意:1. 续写词数应为 150个左右;
The next day, I dragged myself to the rehearsal.

The next day, I dragged myself to the rehearsal, still feeling disheartened. As we began, I watched the princesses dance gracefully, a twinge of jealousy stirring within me. But then, as I started to act out my role, something shifted. Mr. Ellison’s words echoed in my mind, “Every role is important.” Gradually, I immersed myself in the character of the old woman. My lines flowed naturally, and I found a newfound respect for my role. To my surprise, my performance drew applause from my peers. This small role, I realized, could be a powerful one.
Finally, the great day arrived, and “the old woman” couldn’t wait to get on stage. As the curtains opened, a rush of excitement filled me. I delivered my lines with conviction, feeling more alive on stage than I had ever been. The audience laughed at my humorous lines, and I felt a sense of accomplishment. When the final curtain fell, the applause was deafening. Mr. Ellison’s words had been right — every role was important. I had found my place in the spotlight, not as a princess, but as an old woman who helped a soldier. And it was enough.
