Meanwhile in the rain forest in northern Queensland, at least 2 inches of rain are expected to fall over the next 24 hours. A further 10 inches are predicted over the week ahead. Residents should expect flash floods on roads and only travel if essential to do so.
The Northern Territory will see some of this rain as the clouds move in a south-west direction. However, they should only experience light showers, and it will remain dry and cloudy until Friday evening. It should then brighten up over the weekend, with highs of 32 degrees in some parts.
With all the wild weather of the east coast, the west coast is looking calm. Those living in Perth will enjoy warm weather with highs of 30 degrees. A calm wind may become stronger towards the end of the week. As we go further up the coast towards Geraldton, we see rain showers coming in from the ocean, but these should disappear by Thursday.

Fruit For All
One day in 2020, a high school student named Zach Selby found out a way to help people who need food. The organisations he learned about take extra fruit from fruit trees and give it to local food banks. Selby decided he could start his own group in his neighbourhood. He called the group Fruit For All(FFA). It is a non- profit group that collects extra fruit from homeowners’ trees and donates it to local food banks.
To make FFA successful, Selby needed eager volunteers and trees with fruit. Selby asked community members to call or contact him online and let him know whether they had trees with extra fruit. At first, it was difficult to find people who were willing to contribute the fruit in their trees. But as news of Selby’s idea spread, people contacted him. Soon, FFA was really “growing”!
With the help of his brother Jack and other volunteers, Selby has gathered and donated more than 70,000 pounds of fruit to local food banks. The group usually works on the weekends, and the volunteers travel as far as 20 miles from Selby’s house. The volunteers usually gather about 500 pounds of fruit each weekend. But one weekend they collected over 2,000 pounds of fruit!
FFA also has a website that explains the group’s goal, which is to inspire people to help. Visitors to the website learn three ways they can take part in. They can allow volunteers to pick fruit from their trees. They can volunteer to pick fruit. And they can start an FFA group in their own area. People who are interested can also use the website to ask Selby and Jack questions and post comments.
More volunteers are joining in. Although the contributions might be small, they can make a big difference. With the help from groups like FFA, more people are able to enjoy delicious fruit.
20. What does FFA do?
A. It offers fruit classes. B. It grows and sells fruit.
C. It builds a food factory. D. It collects and donates fruit.
21. What did Selby need to make FFA successful at the start?

C. Website designers. D. Money.
22. Website visitors can help FFA by ________.
A. explaining its goal B. visiting neighbours
C. starting their local FFA D. developing interest in planting
23. What kind of boy is Selby according to the passage?
A. Caring. B. Patient. C. Polite. D. Strict.

Think back to your first memory. How old were you at the time? Chances are you can’t remember anything earlier than kindergarten or primary school — nothing about your first words, steps, or solid food other than what your parents have later told you. This phenomenon is called “infantile amnesia”, due to which the majority of adults rarely remember things that happen to them before the age of three.
So why is it that we can’t remember being a baby? The answer lies in the way that our brain’s ability to store memories changes as we grow. At birth, a baby’s brain is only a quarter of its adult size, growing to three-quarters the size of an adult brain by age two. This increase is associated with a growth in the number of brain cells — called neurons (神经元) — and the connections between these cells.
A part of the brain that is particularly important in forming memories is the hippocampus (海马体), says Dr Dhanisha Jhaveri, a researcher at The University of Queensland. This region stores autobiographical memories from specific events in our lives. “In the hippocampus, new neurons are constantly being created. In adulthood, new cells are still being produced, but the rate of production in the hippocampus slows down,” says Dr Jhaveri.
Neuroscientists believe that the rapid rate at which brain cells are being produced in childhood could be the cause of infantile amnesia. Because so many new neurons are being produced and form connections with each other in memory circuits, they might disrupt (扰乱) existing networks of memories that have already formed.
Despite this memory loss, childhood experiences have been found to influence adult behaviour years later, which suggests that traces of these memories could be stored somewhere in the brain that isn’t easy to access.
In research in animals, scientists have found that latent (潜在的) traces of early experiences remain in the brain for a long time, and can later be triggered (触发) by a reminder. It highlights the important influence of early life experiences on mental and emotional well-being later in life.
24.What is infantile amnesia?
A.The inability to form memories during adulthood. B.The inability to recall early experiences.
C.The influence on existing memory networks. D.The influence on mental and emotional well-being.
25.What do we learn about the brain according to the passage?
A.New neurons disrupt existing memory circuits. B.The hippocampus plays a passive role in one’s memory.
C.A baby’s brain is three-quarters the size of an adult brain. D.Brain cells are being produced more rapidly in adulthood.
26.What does the research in animals show?
A.Memories are stored separately in their brain. B.Memories are mainly formed when they are young.
C.Early experiences have a long-term impact on life. D.Early experiences are easy to be triggered by a reminder.
27.Which of the following is the best title for the passage?
A.The Formation of Early Childhood Memories
B.The Impact of Infantile Amnesia on Memory Networks
C.The Role of the Hippocampus in Memory Formation
D.The Influence of Early Life Experiences on Mental Well-being

When scientists go to a forest to study monkeys and their habits and behaviors, how do they know who’s who?
In the past, scientists had to make marks on each of the animals to distinguish them. But in the future, they may have a much easier way to tell them apart thanks to facial recognition technology.
A research team from China’s Northwest University is using facial recognition technology to identify thousands of snub-nosed monkeys that live on Qinling Mountain in Shaanxi province.
Similar to human facial recognition, the technology that is used to identify monkeys uses their facial features to create a database that includes every monkey, Xinhua reported. “When the system is fully developed, we can connect it with cameras set up in the mountains. The system will automatically recognize the monkeys, name them and analyze their behavior,” said Zhang He, a member of the research team. “For each snub-nosed monkey, we have 700 to 800 image samples, and the recognition success rate is 94 percent,” Zhang added.
“We used mobile phones and portable cameras with the monkeys in tests at distances ranging from about 3 to 10 meters,” said He Gang, a member of the research team and an associate professor in the College of Life Sciences at Northwest University. “There is no need to interfere with the monkeys. Such a method of sampling is clearly non-invasive.”
Compared to humans, facial recognition technology for monkeys is more complicated because of their hairier faces. The color of their hair causes them to blend into their environment. These factors make it harder for computers to identify them.
“Monkeys do not cooperate with researchers in the same way humans do. It is difficult to take high-quality pictures and videos of them, which are needed to improve the system,” said Li Baoguo, leader of the research team.
Currently, there are about 4,000 snub-nosed monkeys living on Qinling Mountain. The team’s goal is to successfully identify every monkey that lives there.

I sill remember my first day of second grade. I was led to a classroom. No teacher yet. Girls talking and laughing. Boys playing games.
I took some paper and a pencil, picked a desk, and went to work. Minutes later, a girl came over and sat on top of my desk.
“What are you doing?” she said.
“I am doing Fun with Number” I replied. Then I rose from my seat to get my pencil sharpener. I had no idea that when I stood, the desk would fall over and hurt her leg.
Her name was Lucy. From that day on we got to know each other, and she became my best friend. Now we have been close friends for more than 60 years. We often get together and recall the past.
Some TV advertisements try to tell us what children need for school, new shoes, clothes, and schoolbags. But really, children’s needs are simple. Besides the basics—to be fed, cared for, and loved—they need the gift of friendship.
For years, I feared how people saw me. But one day, I finally understood I didn’t need to be smart or pretty or popular, but just needed to be kind.
My grandson William recently finished his preschool and received a prize for “friendship”. Even an Olympic medal wouldn’t make me prouder! I think children need to know that they are loved. They need to know they have all they need and that the best way to win friends is to be kind.
32.When and where did the author meet Lucy for the first time? (no more than 12 words)
33.What was the author doing when Lucy came over?(no more than 6 words)
34.How do Lucy and the author keep their friendship growing?(no more than 8 words)

D.The Influence of Early Life Experiences on Mental Well-being
【答案】24.B 25.A 26.C 27.B

28.What problem do scientists face while studying monkeys according to the text?
A.How to mark them. B.How to distinguish them.
C.How to understand their behavior. D.How to observe them clearly
29.What does the article tell us about facial recognition technology for monkeys?
A.It is now widely adopted in China.
B.It works better than human facial recognition.
C.It will use monkeys’ behavior to create a database.
D.It can help scientists study monkeys without disturbing them.
30.According to the leader of the team, what is the difficulty in improving the system?
A.Less cooperative monkeys.
B.Hard for computers to identify the monkeys.
C.photos and videos of high quality.
D.Too many monkeys to identify.
31.What is the author’s main purpose in writing the article?
A.To introduce a new way to identify monkeys.
B.To show the importance of studying monkeys.
C.To compare different ways to identify monkeys.
D.To explain difficulties in developing a new system.
【答案】28.B 29.D 30.A 31.A

29.细节理解题。根据第五段中的“There is no need to interfere with the monkeys. Such a method of sampling is clearly non-invasive.(没有必要干扰猴子。这种取样方法显然是非侵入性的。)”可知,猴脸识别技术可以帮助科学家在不打扰猴子的情况下研究它们。故选D。
30.细节理解题。根据倒数第二段“‘Monkeys do not cooperate with researchers in the same way humans do. It is difficult to take high-quality pictures and videos of them, which are needed to improve the system,’ said Li Baoguo, leader of the research team.(‘猴子不像人类那样与研究人员合作。很难拍摄高质量的猴子照片和视频,这是改进系统所必需的,’研究小组组长李保国说。)”可知,改进系统的难处在于猴子不配合。故选A。
31.推理判断题。通读全文,尤其是第二段中的“But in the future, they may have a much easier way to tell them apart thanks to facial recognition technology.(但在未来,由于面部识别技术,他们可能会有一种更容易的方法来区分他们。)”和第三段“A research team from China’s Northwest University is using facial recognition technology to identify thousands of snub-nosed monkeys that live on Qinling Mountain in Shaanxi province.(中国西北大学的一个研究小组正在使用面部识别技术来识别生活在陕西省秦岭的数千只金丝猴。)”可知,本文主要介绍了中国西北大学的一个研究小组开发的猴脸识别技术,用来识别和区分金丝猴,由此可推测出,作者写这篇文章的主要目的是介绍一种识别猴子的新方法。故选A。

33.What was the author doing when Lucy came over?(no more than 6 words)

At that time, he got the idea of making a kite.”(一阵突如其来的大风把他的帽子从头上吹下来,带到了高高的天空。但是农夫不再需要追逐他的帽子了。那时,他萌生了做风筝的念头。)可知,让农夫萌生造风筝的念头源于风把他的帽子吹起的事件。故答案为:The farmer’s flying hat.
35.考查细节理解。根据最后一段中“Like the roots of many inventions, these stories are each inspired by people’s experiences or observations of the natural world.”(就像许多发明的根源一样,这些故事都是受到人们对自然世界的经历或观察的启发。)可知,由于人们对自然世界的经历或观察的启发,促使人们创造出发明。故答案为:By people’s experiences or observations of the natural world.

How’s everything going?
I’m writing to tell you that our school will organize us to visit the Capital Museum on July 12. There will be many activities. For example, you can listen to a lecture on Chinese history and try on traditional Chinese clothes and do a role-play. You can also learn to make a teapot and take it home. I’m sure you will enjoy Chinese culture and have a great time as well.
Please feel free to ask me if you have any questions.
Best regards,
Li Hua
