Our Life in the Future
With the development of science and technology, our life in the future will change a lot in many ways.
In the future, we will be living in smart homes where everything will be controlled automatically by using advanced technology. What’s more, the smart home will learn our daily routine and preferences, so everything will be ready for us when we get home. To believe it or not, it will also monitor our health every day and provide relevant advice on keeping fit. In addition, we will be travelling in driverless cars, which will free us from driving and have more time for a rest. As for the future job, one really good point is that we’ll use a virtual reality headset and microphone to do the job instead of leaving home.
All in all, our life will become more and more convenient due to the technological advances. I believe it will come true in the not-distance future.
(Text 1)
W: Your appointment next Tuesday at 3 pm has to be canceled. I could make an appointment for you on Wednesday at 3 pm though.
M: I just want an appointment next Tuesday. The time doesn’t matter to me.
W: Then I will have you see Dr. Guthrie. The date is the same but the time is at 2 pm.
(Text 2)
W: Can I help you?
M: I’m having trouble with this cleaner. I’d like to return it.
W: What seems to be wrong?
M: It doesn’t pick up much dust, and it makes a loud noise when it’s operating.
(Text 3)
W: I heard you are planning to study in Germany after you graduate.
M: I changed my mind. I am really interested in the art program in France.
W: Does it mean you will study French this term?
M: Well ... I grew up with French.
(Text 4)
W: I’d like to study in the library after lunch. Do you want to go together?
M: I have studied till midnight every day all week. I will join Richard later. He booked a badminton court.
W: If I were you, I would want to catch up on some sleep. It is important to sleep enough.
M: True. You have a point.
(Text 5)
M: Did you see the football match last night?
W: Yeah.
M: The TV presenters were complaining about the mistakes the managers made. It must be impossible for them to get it right every time.
W: It’s easy if you’re watching on TV, but much harder when you’ve actually got to make those decisions yourself.
(Text 6)
W: Ever since our neighbors moved in, I haven’t been able to sleep properly.
M: Why? Do they make a noise?
W: Yes, they play music quite loudly late at night and they seem to have a party almost every weekend.
M: Have you spoken to them about it?
W: Not yet. My husband thinks we should knock on their door and tell them to be quiet but I’m thinking of asking them around for dinner. And then if we do need to complain in the future, they might be more likely to agree.
(Text 7)
W: Can you pass me the laptop? I need to write an email complaining about that handbag.
M: What’s the problem with it?
W: Well, I’ve already sent one back. I ordered one in brown and they sent me a black one. So I returned
it and they sent me the correct one. But look, the handle is coming off.
M: Oh! That’s too bad.
W: Yeah. And what makes me angry is I have to keep going to the post office to post it back. It
doesn’t cost anything but it’s annoying and a waste of time.
(Text 8)
W: Good morning, sir. Can I have your tickets please?
M: Yeah. Here they are. Have you started checking in for the flight to New York? Is it on time?
W: Yes, sir, we have and it is on time. May I have your passports, please? I need to check the visas. Is that your daughter? Does she have a separate passport?
M: Yes, she does. Here are both of them.
W: Thank you. Your papers are in order. Do you have a seat preference?
M: Could you give me a front row window seat and a middle seat for my daughter? We both don’t like seats in the back.
W: Let me see. That’s not a problem. Here are your boarding cards, sir. You can now go through security. Have a good flight.
M: Thank you.
(Text 9)
M: Wow, your office’s really nice!
W: Yeah, typical tech company office, right?
M: Is that a spinning bike?
W: Yeah. We have table tennis, too. Want a game?
M: I can’t believe this. Do you ever do any work?
W: Sure, we do a lot of work! Sometimes you just need to take a break and clear your head, you know.
M: You’re so lucky … You should see where I work.
W: You don’t like it?
M: It’s just a small room. We all sit there in rows, no one talking to each other … It’s miserable, actually.
W: So why not move? With your background you could find something better easily.
M: I’ve thought about it, but I think if I put a couple more years in, I could move up in the company. If I leave now, the time I spent will have been for nothing.
W: If that’s how you feel about it, why would you want to stay? You really think being a manager would be any better?
M: I hope so … Anyway, I don’t want to think about it any more. How about that game of table tennis?
W: Alright, but I should warn you, I’ve been practising a lot …
(Text 10)
M: Hello, everyone. I’m Peter from Foxton English. Today I’d like to tell you something about our English Adventure Course. It’s a very popular course, and it’s partly a language course and partly an adventure holiday. So in the morning, you students have language classes and you also do projects — things like making a class magazine or producing a play. Then in the afternoon you get out of the classroom and you have outdoor activities — things like horse-riding, mountain climbing and so on. There is a wide range of choices. You’re still using English, but you’re learning something else as well. And in the evening, there’s also lots for you to do ... there’s discos, karaoke and so on. Then every weekend there’s a choice of adventure trips and you can choose between the Lake District Adventure and the Beach Adventure. The Lake District Adventure involves lots of climbing and hill walking. As for the Beach Adventure, you spend the weekend camping on the beach with swimming and fishing and a campfire. And the third choice is The London Experience. That’s two days in London visiting all the main tourist attractions.

B篇
【答案】24.B 25.A 26.D 27.C
根据第一段“Thanks to my weak arm, the ball dropped before he could catch it. After many misses one day, he said, “How am I ever going to make the major leagues?” “You got the wrong dad, kid,” I thought. Baseball isn’t my thing.(由于我的手臂无力,球在他接住之前就掉了下来。一天错过多次后,他说:“我怎么才能进入大联盟呢?”“孩子,你找错爸爸了,”我想。棒球不是我的菜。)”可知,作者的棒球技术很差,所以作者认为儿子询问作者如何进入大联盟找错爸爸了。故选B。
25.细节理解题。根据第二段“There was an official Little League in our area, but it was super-competitive and primarily targeted older boys. What if we had something more low-key, something that welcomed boys and girls, and younger ones?(我们地区有一个官方的小联盟,但它的竞争非常激烈,主要针对年龄较大的男孩。如果我们有一些更低调的东西,一些欢迎男孩和女孩,以及更年轻的孩子的东西呢?)”可知,作者希望这个棒球联盟能够更容易加入。故选A。

根据最后一段“I know better than anyone: Parenthood calls you to do the most unlikely things.(我比任何人都清楚:为人父母会让你去做最不可能的事情。)”
28.B 29.A 30.C 31.D
根据第一段中“When the waiter brought him a plate of delicious looking fried noodles, he smiled and made an OK sign at the waiter with his thumb and forefinger linked in a circle. Looking angry, the waiter then picked up the dish and thrown it to his lap. What he did wrong, he wondered. Well, nothing is quite as it seems when it comes to using hand gesture in another country.(当服务员给他端来一盘看起来很美味的炒面时,他笑了笑,用拇指和食指围成一个圈,向服务员做了一个OK的手势。服务员看起来很生气,然后拿起盘子扔到他的腿上。他不知道自己做错了什么。当谈到在另一个国家使用手势时,一切都不像看起来那么简单)”可知,这个男人没有意识到文化差异,做错了手势。故选B。
29.词义猜测题。根据第二段中“Gestures have been used to replace words in many countries, and they are often specific to a given culture. (手势在许多国家已经被用来代替单词,而且它们往往是特定文化的特有特征)”可知,手势在不同的文化中有不同的含义。结合第二段中“Gesture may mean something complimentary in one culture, but is highly offensive in another.(手势在一种文化中可能意味着complimentary,但在另一种文化则极具攻击性)”的but可知前后是转折关系,故划线词和后面的冒犯相对,意为“钦佩的”,与A项“Full of admiration.(充满钦佩)”意思相近。故选A。
根据第四段中“Avoid using this gesture in Northern Greece unless you want to invite a fight.(除非你想打架,否则不要在希腊北部使用这种手势) ”可知,如果你向希腊北部的一个男人竖大拇指,他会生气并与你产生争斗。故选C。

D篇
B 33. D 34. B 35. C
根据第一段中“Despite being fairly low-volume during the day, they are really loud on either side of their night-time get-togethers. Why might this be?(尽管白天的声音很小,但在晚上聚集的时候,它们的声音非常大。为什么会这样呢?)”可知,让科学家们困惑的是它们不寻常的叫声。故选B。
【33题详解】
推理判断题。根据第二段中“The researchers suspected that each individual’s call might count as an “I’m in!”. When a certain amount of “I’m in!” s are called —and so a certain volume of noise is reached -the group might then depart as a unit.(研究人员怀疑,每只寒鸦的呼叫都可能被视为“我加入!”当一定量的“我加入!”当噪音达到一定的音量时,这群乌鸦就会作为一个整体离开。)”以及第三段中“To test this idea, the researchers artificially increased the level of calls during the jackdaws’ natural morning calls. (为了验证这一观点,研究人员人为地增加了寒鸦自然鸣叫时的叫声水平)”以及本段中“Their expectation was that, if jackdaws really are “voting with their voice” to decide when to depart the sleeping site, artificially adding calls would make them leave earlier than they naturally would have done.
根据倒数第二段“You might wonder why this happens. The researchers suggest that individual jackdaws benefit from the voting system because they are less at risk of being killed and they can get more access to social information — such as where to find food.(你可能想知道为什么会这样。研究人员认为,个别寒鸦从投票系统中受益,因为它们被杀死的风险更小,而且它们可以获得更多的社会信息——比如在哪里可以找到食物。)”可知,个别寒鸦从投票系统中受益,因为它们被杀死的风险更小,即为一个更好生存的策略。故选B。
【35题详解】
主旨大意题。根据第一段中“Despite being fairly low-volume during the day, they are really loud on either side of their night-time get-togethers. Why might this be?(尽管白天的声音很小,但在晚上聚集的时候,它们的声音非常大。为什么会这样呢?)”以及通读全文,文章回答了寒鸦在晚上聚会时为什么会发出非常大的声音即寒鸦在离开睡眠地点前会发出大量的嘎吱声,研究人员认为这是它们用声音投票决定离开的方式。C选项“Jackdaws ‘Vote’ to Make a Group Decision.( 寒鸦“投票”做出集体决定。)”
根据后文“One is that culture is a total pattern of behaviour that is consistent in its components. Another fundamental is that culture is learned behaviour. The third is that culture is behaviour that is shared by a group of people.(一是文化是一种行为的整体模式,其组成部分是一致的。另一个基本原则是,文化是后天习得的行为。第三,文化是一群人共同的行为)”可知,这三种基本原则正是对C项“However, there are certain agreed-on fundamentals that can be easily identified.(然而,在一些容易确定的基本原则上存在某些共识)”中“there are certain agreed-on fundamentals”的详细说明。故选C。
前文“Material culture includes the tools and symbols in a society, not including those physical things found in nature, unless they have undergone some change or have been given meaning by people.(物质文化包括社会中的工具和符号,不包括自然界中的物质,除非它们经历了一些变化或被人们赋予了意义)”在讲解物质文化包括的内容,E项“For example, a mouse running on a street is not part of a culture, but the Mickey Mouse is.(例如,街上的老鼠不是文化的一部分,但米老鼠却是)”是对物质文化的举例。故选E。
根据第二段的第一句“To understand the culture of a particular country or region, one could examine its components, among which are material culture, language, and social organization.(要了解一个特定国家或地区的文化,可以考察其组成部分,其中包括物质文化、语言和社会组织)”可知,其后的内容是按照物质文化、语言和社会组织三方面进行阐述的,设空处前一段已对物质文化做了解释,按照文章逻辑此段内容应为语言,B项“Language is the most obvious difference between cultures.(语言是不同文化之间最明显的差异)”从整体上概述了语言特征,且从后文中出现的“vocabulary”和“words”也可看出,本段在讲述语言。故选B。.
后文“It provides mutual protection, psychological support and a kind of economic insurance or social security for its members.(它为其成员提供相互保护、心理支持和经济保险或社会保障)”中的“mutual protection, psychological support and a kind of economic insurance or social security for its members”是对F项“In many developing countries, the extended family fulfils several social and economic roles.(在许多发展中国家,大家庭承担着多种社会和经济角色)”中“several social and economic roles”的列举。故选F。
根据前文“Understanding the various dimensions and their inter-relatedness helps promote cross-cultural awareness.(了解各方面及其相互关系有助于提高跨文化意识)”可知,了解文化的构成是有好处的,G项“It leads on to the promotion of goodwill, social and economic planning and harmony between social groupings or societies.(它促进善意、社会和经济规划以及社会团体或社会之间的和谐)”中的it指代“了解文化构成”,承接前文,继续说这样可以带来的好处。

根据时间状语“During the 1970s and 1980s,”,可知时态为一般过去时;主语“the term “extreme sports””和谓语动词use之间是被动关系,因此为被动语态。故填was used。
副词修饰介词短语“without putting your life in danger.”,作状语,因此将形容词necessary变成副词necessarily。故填necessarily。
故填to protect。
develope from “由......发展而来”。故填from。
故填which。
故填a 。

I know next to nothing about baseball. When in the right field during
P.E.as a boy,I prayed the ball woulan t come to me.-It took a miracle
(for me to catch it.Yet I later became the father of two boys,Will
and Tim(8 and 5),who were both interested in baseball. On Saturday mornings,
I'd take Will out to the playground and play catch with him. Thanks to my
weak arm,the ball dropped before he could catch it.After many misses one
day,he said,“How am I ever going to make the major leagues?”“You got

Still,I wanted to give my kids confidence on the field. There was
an official Little League in our area, but it was super-competitive and
primarily targeted older boys. What if we had something more low-key,
something that welcomed boys and girls, and younger ones?
I shared the idea with some neighbors."That would be great!"they
said. Now who could organize such a thing? Not me.I tried to put the idea
aside, but it wouldn't leave me.I finally decided that I must do something
about it.So,I called the city's recreation department, explaining that
some families wanted to start a baseball league in our neighborhood. Were
there any fields for that? They bounced me around. Finally,I spoke to the
official in charge.I got butterflies in my stomach. What if he said no?
"Yes,we have something for you,"the man said,hearing my request.We
got two fields for four hours every Sunday morning. Our league was founded.
What a joy it was to sit on the benches, watching Will and Tim playing baseball!
How grateful I was for other parents who did the coaching! And I became the

In a foreign country,a man visited a local restaurant.He didn't
speak their language. He ordered something indecipherable(难以辨认的)off
the menu. When the waiter brought him a plate of delicious looking fried
noodles,he smiled and made an OK sign at the waiter with his thumb and
forefinger linked in a circle.Looking angry, the waiter then picked up the
dish and thrown it to his lap. What he did wrong,he wondered.Well, nothing
is quite as it seems when it comes to using hand gesture in another country.
Gestures have been used to replace words in many countries, and they
are often specific to a given culture.Gesture may mean something
complimentary in one culture, but is highly offensive in another.
The gesture "thumb-up"is commonly misinterpreted.In English,it
is popularly known as "thumbs up",despite the fact that the action is
commonly performed with only one hand.English-speaking Caucasians use it
to signal "OK",which is the same meaning as OK ring gesture. The two can
in fact be used almost interchangeably.Avoid using this gesture in Northern
Greece unless you want to invite a fight. While American,British and
Australian would use the thumb-up to signal hitch-hiking to the drivers,
this message will not encourage a Greek driver or motorist to stop to give
them a ride.
There are no right or wrong signals, only cultural differences.Lack
of cultural understanding will lead to disharmony among people from
different cultures. When we know what to look for, such encounters with other
cultures are actually very interesting, fascinating and fun.It is certainly
a great topic to discuss over a cup of coffee and cakes.

Jackdaws are the smallest member of the crow family. They often
live in a crowd.Indeed, when cold weather comes, they gather in the hundreds
(and sometimes thousands)every evening so that they can sleep in the same
place. If you've ever heard jackdaws during their evening gatherings and
morning departures,you'1l know they are not quiet birds.Despite being
fairly low-volume during the day, they are really loud on either side of
their night-time get-togethers.Why might this be?
A team of the Cornish Jackdaw Project set out to determine why jackdaws
are so noisy before.they depart from their sleeping spot. The team's theory
was that the morning calls might be a jackdaw version of "voting".The
researchers suspected that each individual's call might count as an "I'
min!”.When a certain amount of“I'min!”s are called一and so a certain
volume of noise is reached --the group might then depart as a unit.
To test this idea, the researchers artificially increased the level
of calls during the jackdaws'natural morning calls.Their expectation was
that,if jackdaws really are "voting with their voice"to decide when to
depart the sleeping site, artificially adding calls would make them leave
earlier than they naturally would have done.Subsequent experiments

confirmed their expectation. The team therefore showed that jackdaws use
their calls as a sort of voting system.
You might wonder why this happens. The researchers suggest that
individual jackdaws benefit from the voting system because they are less
at risk of being killed and they can get more access to social information
-such as where to find food.
So the loud calls of jackdaws in the morning are therefore not the
pure chaos it sounds like.If you are ever being driven mad by the sound
in the morning, you can find comfort in the fact that the louder they get,
the sooner they will leave you in peace.
32.What aspect of jackdaws confused scientists?
A.Their strong team spirit.
B.Their unusual calling behavior.
C.Their collective sleeping habit.
D.Their preference for noisy habitats.
33.What happened to the jackdaws when artificial calls were added?
A.They stopped calling together.
B.They changed their sleeping location.
C.They became noisier and more active.
D.They left their sleeping spot earlier.
34.What does the voting system mean to individual jackdaws?
A.A signal of seeking food.
B.A strategy for better survival.
C.A way to attract potential partners.
D.A method of displaying social skills.
35.What can be the best title for the text?
A.Jackdaws are Noise Makers.
B.Jackdaws Have a Complex Voting System.
C.Jackdaws 'Vote'to Make a Group Decision.
D.Jackdaws 'Vote'to Choose Their Group Leaders.

behaviour. The third is that culture is behaviour that is shared by a group
of people.
To understand the culture of a particular country or region, one could

vocabulary for commercial and industrial activities, while less
industrialized societies may have richer vocabularies for matters important
to their societies. The Eskimos in Alaska have many words to describe snow
whereas English has only one general term.
Social organization differs somewhat from society to society. The
primary kind of community association is based on blood ties.39It
provides mutual protection, psychological support and a kind of economic
insurance or social security for its members. The term "brothers"in Zaire
includes those whom we call cousins and uncles.
Cultural analysis serves a variety of purposes Understanding the
various dimensions and their inter-relatedness helps promote cross-cultural
awareness.40_
