Jesse Owens,an African-American athlete, faced enormous pressure at the 1936 Olympic
Games in Berlin.Despite racial mistreatment present at the Berlin Games,he made history by
winning four Olympic gold medals in the 100 m,200 m,4X100m relay, and long jump events
-an accomplishment no other Olympian had ever made. His remarkable achievement shattered
(粉碎)Adolf Hitler's plan to prove Aryan(雅利安人的)superiority.
While Owens'accomplishment was unique,he might have lost one of his gold medals had
it not been for the advice from an unlikely ally ()-German long jumper Luz Long.During
the long jump event,Owens fouled (on his first two attempts and had only one final chance
to qualify for the final. In an act of sportsmanship,Long walked up and suggested Owens change
his mark and take off well before the foul line in order to avoid another foul.Following Long's
advice,Owens jumped a distance of 25 feet on his final try to qualify for the final.
As it turned out,Owens bagged the gold, setting anew Olympic record(8.06 m)while Long
grabbed silver(7.87m).The German was the first to congratulate Owens and later walked around
the stadium,arm-in-arm with Owens. They even posed together for pictures. It was a classy act
of sportsmanship that stayed with Owens for the rest of his life."It took a lot of courage for him
to befriend me.You can melt down all the medals and cups I have and they wouldn't be a plating
on the 24-karat friendship I felt for Luz Long at that moment,"the American said.
Owens and Long stayed connected even after the Games.Long lost his life during the Battle
of St Pietro later in 1943,but he wrote a touching letter to Owens before he died.In the letter,he
begged Owens to find his young son after the war and tell him about his father.
Years have passed by but their bond still serves as a strong message, highlighting "how
things can be between men on this earth",as written in the letter.

We are fortunate to live in a city that encourages bicycling as a means of transportation.
Our local government has promoted bicycling by improving bike lanes and increasing the
number of them. The growing number of cyclists, however, brings this question to mind:should
bicyclists be required to share the responsibilities of the road?Automobile drivers have to take
competency tests, follow established regulations, and accept punishment for breaking rules. The
city requests drivers to register and license their vehicles to ensure accountability ()
Bicyclists who use public roadways should be held accountable, too.
Let's look at what sharing the road means. For one thing,it should involve cost sharing.
Auto registration and license fees are used,in part, for building and maintaining roadways. It
seems only reasonable to ask bicyclists to contribute to transportation funding as well.
More importantly, sharing the road includes accountability. When drivers ignore the rules
of the road, the police and other motorists have the opportunity to identify them by their license
plate number and report their offenses(违法行为).This isn't true for bicyclists.I've seen
bicyclists moving quickly between lanes.Because they show no identification, they feel
protected by anonymity ()What good would it do to report to the police"I saw a guy on a
red bike blow through the stoplight"?The simple act of making bicyclists identifiable would
encourage safer,more responsible riding.
Of course,I've heard arguments against asking cyclists to register and license their bikes.
Some people might say,"Little kids ride bikes.Would you require a six-year-old rider to take a
test and pay a fee?"Obviously, the city could determine an age when cycling would be
considered a"means of transportation on public roads."Other people argue that bicycle fees are
unfair because bikes don't damage the roadways as cars do.Bicycle registration fees could be
comparatively modest, and the method for displaying a license number could be simple.
Many U.S.cities and towns now implement bike registration and licensing.A statute
from one Califomia town states that the laws regulating bicycles have a dual purpose,
antitheft and safety.I'm eager to see more bicyclists on the road, and I'm hoping for riders who
take their responsibilities seriously.
51.To advocate responsible cycling, the author suggests
A.reporting cycling offenses more
B.increasing the number of bike lanes
C.giving competency tests to all cyclists
D.identifying cyclists through registration frequently
52.What is the author's purpose in writing Paragraph 4?
A.To argue against requiring cyclists to register and license their bicycles.
B.To respond to people's doubts about holding cyclists accountable.
C.To provide solutions to reduce irresponsible cycling of kids.
D.To explain how bicycle registration and licensing work.
53.What argumentative methods are used in this article?
①Using examples
2 Quoting professionals
3 Comparing and contrasting
4Appealing to readers'emotions
A.③④
B.②④
C.①③
D.①②

Winter is connected with fun and games:snowball fights, skiing, and, every four years, the
Winter Olympics. But what will a winter sports enthusiast do if the snow doesn't make an
appearance?55
Artificial snow is more like a tightly packed frozen snow that is partly melted.56
They are broken up by a high-pressure pump at first and then turn into small frozen pieces. Most
artificial snow is made using snow cannons. As the air's cooling capacity falls,so does the
amount of water that can be pumped through the machine.57.At-4 centigrade a snow
cannon can operate at around 80%humidity.But if the outside temperature is-1 centigrade, this
must be reduced to around 30%humidity.
In 1980,the Olympics held in America became the first Winter Games to use machine-made
snow.58Artificial snow also appeared at the two recent Winter Olympics,in Sochi,
Russia(2014),and Vancouver,British Columbia(2010).And the 2022 Winter Olympics in
Beijing is the first to rely entirely on artificial snow.
59The International Olympic Committee states that it creates a more consistent
surface. In addition, the snow that comes from a cannon is icier than natural snow.It melts more
slowly and provides a harder surface for athletes looking for speed. The first Olympics using
entirely artificial snow will probably not be the last.
A.But they weren't the last.
B.It is made from waterdrops.
C.That's when artificial snow comes in.
D.What is artificial snow, and how is it made?
E.Temperature also plays a significant role in snowmaking.
F.Artificial snow can be applied to a wide range of fields.
G.Artificial snow is well worth using in the Winter Olympics.
