Poverty (贫困) is a big problem around the world. But China has done a good job of dealing with it and it has found its own way to fight poverty. Instead of just giving money to poor people, it has also tried to educate people and give them the tools they need to lift themselves out of poverty. Ordinary (平凡的) people play a big role in fighting poverty. Here are two examples of them.
After graduating from Beijing Normal University in 2016, Huang Wenxiu gave up the chances to work in big cities and returned to her hometown Baise in Guangxi and served as the Party chief (党委书记) of the village. Thanks to her efforts, a total of 418 villagers were lifted out of poverty. Unluckily, she died in a flash flood at the age of 30 while driving back to her village in Baise. She was given the title role “model of the times” by the central government.
When Mao Xianglin started to work as the Party secretary of his village, there was only one pathway out of the village for many years. He led more than 100 villagers to build a road with their hands. It took them seven years to build an eightkilometer road. Mao then encouraged the villagers to grow oranges. Last year, their orange yield was nearly 40 tons. Many young people return to the village to offer help by selling oranges online. By the end of 2019, 269 villagers had been lifted out of poverty. The per capital income (人均收入) reached 12,670 yuan, and that is 40 times more than in the 1990s.

It’s common that people may find it difficult to get enough sleep because they have big pressure (压力) and heavy work. We all know that it is bad for our health. But if you sleep for less than 5 hours each day, you may even have fewer friends.
According to researchers, people who don’t get enough sleep can be less willing to communicate with others. The researchers tested 18 young people after a good night’s sleep and then tested them again after a sleepless night. The participants (参与者) watched videos of people walking towards them. When the person on the video got too “close” to them, they stopped the video. The results showed that the participants kept the person further away when they didn’t get enough sleep. But when the participants got a good night’s sleep, they allowed the person to get much closer to them.
According to the lead researcher, the less sleep you get, the less you may want to communicate with others. In turn, other people may think you are strange and stay away from you. Playgrounds offer kids fresh air and exercise. However, each year, more than 200,000 kids go to hospital because they are hurt in one way or another when playing on the playground. So what can we do to improve the situation?
We should make sure the playground is safe for the children. It should be soft and thick enough, so when the children fall, they won’t hurt too much. Things like water, rocks or broken glass might cause danger to the kids. Cleaners should check the playground from time to time and clear away these dangerous things. In fact, children also need to help keep the playground clean and safe. That means each time after playing they should pick up the rubbish they’ve produced. If someone finds there is something wrong with the equipment (设施), he should report to the keeper of the playground, so people will come to fix it.
Teaching kids how to play safely is also very important. If they know the rules of the playground, they won’t get hurt easily. For example, they should never push when others are on seesaws or swings. If someone is going to jump off some equipment, he should first look down to make sure no other kids are in the way. Of course, maybe it is also helpful to wear right clothes. Clothes with strings (绳) can get caught on equipment which may hurt the kid badly.

“The dolphins are really good at finding fish in the water and driving them to the coast,” Cantor said. “The fishermen are really good at catching the fish with their nets (网).” Once the fish are caught in the nets, dolphins can move in and get some for themselves.

Fishermen will then cast the nets right away, or they may lose the best chance. “Fishermen need to be well-trained to understand the signals from dolphins,” said Cantor.
