When one door closes to Li Mei, another one opens.
Born with serious hearing loss, Li has found her way to communicate with the world-through painting. “Painting brushes can help me create a colorful world in my imagination, telling my thoughts on paper, rather than through voices,” the 40-year-old painter says.
Before learning to paint in primary school, Li always felt lonely in a silent world. She knew she was different from other kids because she could not hear. But a painting class opened for her a door to creativity and a way of expression. “Everyone has his or her own imaginative world. In this world, I can use my painting brush to express what l think,” Li says.
Drawing not only was her way of dealing with a lonely childhood, but has also become her life long career. “I still remember my first mural (壁画), which was to help a kindergarten to design and paint its wall,“ Li says. The project made her realize how happy she was when immersing herself into painting.
Moreover, painting led Li to meet her husband Hu Shiqun. In 2016, Li joined her husband’s company, which specializes in 3D wall and ground paintings. All the five painters there are hearing-impaired(听力受损的). “I know how difficult it is for hearing-impaired people to find a job. So I want to help those who are passionate about painting to achieve their dreams,” Hu says.
Like Li, an increasing number of people don’t let their hearing problems stop their talent in art and make a living through their brushes. Li hopes that their stories can inspire more people facing similar battles to build their own careers and achieve their goals, regardless of how hard it may be.
24. Why did Li think she was different from other kids in primary school?
A. She felt uninterested in many games. B. She couldn’t get along with others.
C. She wasn’t able to hear others’ words. D. She found she had no talent in painting.
25. What does the underlined word “immersing” in paragraph 4 probably mean?
A. Throwing. B. Forcing. C. Arguing. D. Cheating.
26. Why did Hu choose to have five hearing-impaired painters in his company?
A. To let Li make friends with them.
B. To help them achieve painting dreams.
C. To use their talent to develop other business.
D. To know more about hearing-impaired people.
27. What can be a suitable title for the text?
A. Ways to express ourselves B. Love for painting
C. Communication of the deaf D. Strength in silence
C
Teenagers drink. It’s a known fact among our society. People think that they do it to fit in, or to be cool, or to have fun. Although they may be the case for some, the true causes are much more severe. Many do it to escape, or they have no choice in the matter. Knowing and understanding these true causes will make it easier to deal with and treat.
Alcoholism usually runs in the family. A study done by the University of California, San Francisco, showed that about 25% of children of alcoholic families will become alcohol addicts. Therefore, teenagers who have alcoholic parents are more likely to develop alcohol addiction.
Teens are at a higher risk of drinking alcohol because they are more likely to feel more self-conscious about themselves than adults. They are more anxious to create good impressions on their classmates and friends, therefore turning to alcohol. Also, teens believe that drinking makes them feel better, look smarter, or appear cooler.
Teenagers who use alcohol report that the guidance from their parents is often lacking. There is usually a communication gap between the parents and the child.
But you can deal with it well. Know your teenagers and talk with them. Understand what they are going through at school, and know who their friends are. A simple conversation each day can help; in other words, communication is the key. Allow them to enjoy their risky behavior under your supervision. You don’t have to be an annoying one in your teenager’s life, to be a part of it.
28. According to the study done by the University of California, teenagers are more likely to drink when they ________.
A suffer from great pressure from study B. live in the family where parents drink much
C. hang out with alcoholic friends D. are in the dark about the harm of drinking
29. Teens like to drink before their friends to ________.
A. show they are wealthy B. impress them well
C. express their certain feelings D. help them understand each other
30. In dealing with alcoholic teenagers, it is important to ________.
A. understand what they are thinking B. share drinking with them
C. communicate with them well D. ask them to be responsible
31. The passage is mainly written for ________.
A. teenagers B. drinkers C. teachers D. parents
D
If you were to throw, say, a banana peel out of your car while driving along the motorway, that would be a completely harmless action, due to the fact that it’s part of a fruit, right? Actually, no. A banana peel can take up two years to decompose (分解), and with a third of motorists admitting to littering while driving, that’s a whole lot of waste banana peels, or much worse. An orange peel and a cigarette butt can also take a long time to decompose like banana peels, and tin and aluminum (铝) cans last up to 100 years; and plastic bottles last forever, as do glass bottles and plastic bags.
Despite the fact that longer-lasting materials will serve to damage the environment, we can’t only measure the severity of a certain type of rubbish by its lifetime. For example, despite having a fairly short biodegrading span, more than 120 tons of cigarette-related litter is thrown in the UK every day. Similarly, people’s regular littering here and there has caused the UK’s mouse population to increase by 60 million. This suddenly isn’t so mysterious when you consider that since the 1960s our annual littering has increased by an astonishing 500 percent.
It’s not a cheap habit either: UK taxpayers spent £500 million on keeping the streets clean. So, it’s not surprising that if caught fly-tipping, you could face a £20,000 fine. Regardless of how severe the punishment might seem, however, among the reported cases only 2,000 were punished out of 825,000, so we still have some way to go in making sure people obey the rules.
To take back our beautiful cities, we need to do more than simply not leaving rubbish where it ought not to be. We need to care more about the world around us.
32. Which of the following is the easiest to decompose according to the text?
A. A glass bottle. B. A plastic bag.
C. An orange peel. D. An aluminum can.
33. What can we know from paragraph 2?
A. Cigarette-related littering is serious in the UK.
B. People in the UK are littering less than before.
C. Shorter-lasting materials are environmentally friendly.
D. The mouse population in the UK has reached 60 million.
34. What does the underlined word “fly-tipping” in paragraph 3 mean?
A. Driving. B. Littering. C. Fighting. D. Smoking.
35. What is the best title of the text?
A. Littering, a surprisingly big issue. B. Environment issues, a big concern.
C. Rubbish collection, an urgent task. D. Long-lasting materials,a hidden danger.

That school year God blessed me with two trusted children—Tom and Mary. Whenever I went out for training, programs or personal matters, I left everything to them.
However the peace was ruined when one day I lost one thousand pesos (比索) in my bag. I always kept my wallet near me. I only chose my trusted students to get near my things. I kept the door of my office closed every time I went for my classes. My spine trembled upon my seeing my money was no longer there. I scanned my wallet, my secret pocket and everything in my room. But all my attempts were in vain.
I was angry. That morning before my class ended, I appealed to everyone to help me catch the “thief”. At 4:00 in the afternoon that day, I reminded them about my warning of returning my money before investigation took place. Then suddenly, a boy called Larry said, “Miss, look at the paper on the floor!”
My heart beat wildly when I saw the crumpled paper which I thought useless. I replied to them immediately upon holding the paper. “Yes, here it is!” I showed it to them. They urged me to open the paper. I opened it and to my surprise, I saw the one thousand pesos! I felt relieved. Then, a letter appeared among the banknotes.
“Miss, I am sorry that I stole the money. I returned it. Do not tell my classmates that I returned the money and do not mention anything about it in class, because it hurts me. Thank you, Miss. But I can’t tell you why I stole your money.”
Oh my God! My brain flashed the handwriting of my trusted boy—the “thief”. I was sure this was Tom’s handwriting.

A. suffer from great pressure from study B. live in the family where parents drink much
C hang out with alcoholic friends D. are in the dark about the harm of drinking
29. Teens like to drink before their friends to ________.
A. show they are wealthy B. impress them well
C. express their certain feelings D. help them understand each other

第二节(满分25分)
67. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
That school year God blessed me with two trusted children—Tom and Mary. Whenever I went out for training, programs or personal matters, I left everything to them.
However, the peace was ruined when one day I lost one thousand pesos (比索) in my bag.

We went to the hospital and saw Mary’s mother.
___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】The next day, I called Tom to my office. The boy admitted that he was the thief and asked for my forgiveness. I asked him the reason. He said Mary’s mother was in hospital and Mary’s family didn’t have enough money to pay for the treatment. I said in earnest: “Tom, I’m quite touched by your golden heart, but taking money without permission is not a proper way to solve the problem.” Tom lowered his head in shame. “Come on! Let’s visit Mary’s mother and see what we can do for her.”
We went to the hospital and saw Mary’s mother. Mary’s mother was surprised to see us, but soon she collected herself and showed her great gratitude for us visiting her. Thinking of sensible Mary and kind-hearted Tom, I chose not to tell her the incident, comforted her and left the 1000 pesos and some more for her. On our way back, Tom hugged me tightly, tears in his eyes. Later Tom became a better person. Under proper guidance, a boy with a warm heart can shine more brightly.
