Magic Milk Experiment
This fun experiment is a classic for a reason! In the magic milk experiment, kids learn about simple chemical reactions and physical features using only a few materials. Read on to see how to do the experiment.
How does the magic milk experiment work?
In this experiment, you pour some milk in a shallow dish. You then add drops of food coloring to the surface of the milk. Using a cotton swab (棉签) dipped into dish soap that is put aside, you lightly brush the surface of the milk. The dish soap breaks the surface tension of the milk, and the soap molecules (分子) try to attach to the fat molecules in the milk. This leads to bursts of fun rainbow colors.
What does the magic milk experiment teach?
This experiment teaches us about the science of molecules and how matter interacts The soap breaks down the fat molecules and makes them move apart, showing us a simple but interesting example of chemistry in action.
Materials needed:
To do the magic milk experiment, you will need a shallow bowl or plate, milk, blue dish soap, cotton swabs, and food coloring. Be sure to use the more inexpensive food coloring instead of gel (凝胶) coloring, which does not work as well.
Magic milk experiment steps:
●Pour milk into a shallow dish or bowl, just enough to cover the bottom.
●Add drops of food coloring all over the surface of the milk.
●Dip the end of a cotton swab into a separate dish of blue soap.
●Lightly brush the top of the milk with the cotton swab, and watch what happens.
21. What brings about bursts of fun rainbow colors in the experiment?
A. The cotton swab used to brush the surface of the milk.
B. The food coloring that has been left in the shallow dish.
C The physical reactions of the dish soap and food coloring.
D. The interaction between molecules of dish soap and milk.
22. Which material does the experiment have special requirement for?
A. Milk. B. Dish soap. C. Food coloring. D. The cotton swab.
23. Which of the following is one correct step of the experimental procedure?
A. Pour the milk into the container until it is full.
B. Run the cotton swab gently over the milk’s surface.
C. Add food coloring to the milk to create a mixture.
D. Dip one end of a cotton swab into the blue milk.
B
I was scared when I was speaking in front of twenty people for the first time. My fear showed in my pace. I finished a 35-minute talk in 25 minutes. A professor asked me to slow down toward the end of the talk. But the damage had been done. People didn’t get the message.
I was feeling like trash. My boss didn’t help. He repeatedly asked me why I’d got carried away. No, not asked. He shouted in my face. Nothing has ever stressed me out more than that conversation. I still thought of myself as a failure when I recovered. But I was probably the only one seeing myself that way.
There’s this trick that helps me keep my attitude under control. When I’m feeling super emotional, I need to rely on good old common sense. It says people forget you the moment they leave the room.
Let me explain. There was a guy, Marc, who came to my new lab for a job interview. A job interview is a talk in academia. Marc was late for his own talk. He misplaced figures in his PowerPoint presentation. Marc was so worried at the end that he cut anyone asking him a question and began answering it. He messed up completely and didn’t get the job. I was looking at Marc and recalling my experience. I knew how he was feeling. I also knew I wouldn’t think of him for more than ten seconds the moment I left the conference room. There were measurements I needed to run. My girlfriend texted me to ask what I wanted for dinner. There’s no emotional attachment and no reason to think about Marc. Just as there was no reason for the attendees of my talk to focus on me.
There’s nothing wrong with making mistakes. Just make sure you learn from them. It’s easy if you don’t take yourself too seriously. Look at yourself from someone else’s perspective and realize you’re unimportant. Nobody blames you. Nobody is even thinking about you. It’s you, alone. So give it another shot.
24. What was the problem with the author’s speech in the first paragraph?
A. It was too fast. B. It was boring. C. It was misleading. D. It was too difficult.
25. Why does the author mention the interview with Marc?
A. To stress the importance of self-control.
B. To confirm the old common sense.
C. To show the intense pressure of job interviews.
D. To explain the reasons for being super emotional.
26. In the author’s view, what should Marc think of his mess-up in the interview?
A. No big deal. B. A pure accident. C. No easy matter. D. A total disaster.
27. What does the author suggest people do?
A. Ignore others’ opinions. B. Take themselves seriously.
C. Make as many mistakes as possible. D. Realize their insignificance in others’ eyes.

For Laurie Ezzell Brown, local news has been a family affair. Her dad was the owner and publisher of The Canadian Record, a weekly paper serving the small Texas Panhandle town of Canadian since 1893. She spent much of her childhood in the newsroom. She liked it, so when her father died in 1993, she stepped up as an editor.
Brown took pride in thoroughly exploring environmental issues her neighbors cared about. But over the years, running the newspaper became increasingly difficult. In March 2023, she had to make the painful decision to end the printing of the Record, leaving the county without a local news source.
Across the U.S., local newspapers like the Record are fading away rapidly, with over a third having closed since 2005. This “news desert” trend leaves communities less informed, exposed to unethical (不道德的) practices, and divided in their political views. Local journalism is crucial yet faces unforeseen difficulties.
As climate and biodiversity issues worsen, environment reporters are often first to lose jobs. “There is no more local story than the environment,” says Meaghan Parker, former executive director for the Society of Environmental Journalists. “It is the air we breathe. It’s the food we eat. It’s the water we drink.” Despite small audiences, local papers have huge impact due to readers’ trust. When the Fountain Valley News closed, over 60 years of reporting ended. Karin Hill worries about her neighbors’ lack of information on issues like “forever chemicals” in water.
Local news is struggling, but innovative methods are emerging. Report for America and Press Forward are funding reporters and newsrooms. Some states use public money to strengthen journalism, while a congress hill offers tax breaks for supporting local outlets. Kleman notes that there’s no single solution, but many experiments are in progress. In Texas, Brown hopes a buyer revives the Record. During a major wildfire, she shared updates on Facebook but lacked resources to report deeply. She realizes the community desperately needs its newspaper.
28. What was the main reason for the closure of The Canadian Record?
A. Laurie’s father’s death in 1993.
B. Laurie’s decision to step down as an editor.
C. Increasing challenges of managing the newspaper.
D. People’s gradual lack of interest in local news.
29. What do the underlined words “this ‘news desert’ trend” probably refer to in Paragraph 3?
A. The political views that divide communities.
B. The crucial role of local journalism in the U.S.
C. The speedy shutdown of local newspapers across the U.S.
D. The unethical practices that leave communities less informed.
30. What can we infer from Meaghan Parker’ words?
A. Environment reporters are jobless in the near future.
B. Environmental issues are closely tied to our lives.
C. Local papers have wider audiences than national ones.
D. We should care more about the climate and biodiversity issues.
31. What is mainly discussed in the last paragraph?
A. Kleman’s concern for local news. B. The funding of Report for America.
C. Brown’s hope for the Record revival. D. Support for reviving local journalism.

The Oscars. The Booker prize. The Nobels. These awards are all backward-looking, celebrating past achievements. But there is another type of award, one that looks to the future — a challenge prize. Such prizes don’t recognise past successes; rather, they inspire future ones.
The idea is simple: a challenge is selected — with a clear-cut target — and a jackpot (赌注) is offered to whoever first reaches that goal. Examples include the Longitude (经度) prize on antimicrobial resistance (AMR) (耐药性), which has just awarded £8 million to Sysmex Astrego for its PA-100 AST System, a rapid diagnostic test that could transform the treatment of urinary tract infections (泌尿道感染) and so help tackle the rise of AMR.
The challenge prize format has a lot to offer. By opening the field to the widest possible pool of inventors, it can inspire countless potential solutions to a problem. These prizes also have the power to solve some of the most pressing problems of the time.
Consider the original Longitude prize, launched in 1714 to tackle the greatest scientific challenge of that century: how to effectively measure longitude at sea. Without the ability to do this, many ships lost their way and sank, so the British government established a prize of £20,000 to award whoever could solve the problem.
The challenge was met by John Harrison for his chronometer. This seafaring (航海) clock kept time to within 5 seconds on a rolling ship on a transatlantic voyage. This allowed sailors to determine their exact position, leading to safer shipping and opening up global trade routes.
Later, a 12,000-franc contest to find ways of preserving food for Napoleon’s army led to the invention of tinned food. More recent challenge prizes have focused on suborbital spaceflight, driverless cars and robotics.
The Longitude prize on AMR attracted some 250 entries, so it is thrilling now. A decade after the award was launched in 2014, Sysmex Astrego’s system has won. The firm will receive millions, but it won’t be the only beneficiary; it is society that will be an even bigger winner.
32. What distinguishes a challenge prize from other awards?
A. It has simpler rules. B. It offers prize money.
C. It is forward-looking. D. It is more difficult to get.
33. What is an advantage of the challenge prize format according to the text?
A. It attracts public attention to the field. B. It engages as many inventors as possible.
C. It solves as many problems as possible. D. It offers everyone a chance to be recognized.
34. What was the purpose of the original Longitude prize?
A. To open up global trade routes. B. To add to the scientific atmosphere.
C. To recognize achievements in sailing. D. To overcome a pressing problem in sailing.
35. Which of the following is the best title for the text?
A. A Win for All B. A Cure for All C. A Pioneer for All D. A Wonder for All

It was mid-December, and the temperature was a chilly minus 20-degree Celsius. I walked with my head down, passing the homeless beggars and ignoring all of them as usual. Then I saw him, sitting against a building, wrapped in thin cloth, holding a white cup in front of him. I heard his shaky, pitiful voice target me as I sped past him.
“Spare some change?” he asked. “I’ll appreciate it.”
I didn’t even bother looking up at him. In my mind, I briefly pictured him walking into the closest pub and drinking whisky with whatever money he managed to get. Or, maybe he needed another shot of cocaine. See, like most people in the city, it took me only moments to pass judgement on his life.
“I have no money on me.” I said quickly.
Looking back, I feel as though fate had set out that day to teach me a lesson. And it succeeded. Just a few feet past him, I slipped on a piece of ice on the sidewalk! I landed square on my right knee. The acute pain passed throughout as I lay on the ground. Then I heard a familiar voice only inches above me.
“Are you all right?” he asked.
I knew immediately this was the man I had just rushed past. Before tears welled up in my eyes, I saw the smooth, sympathetic look in his eyes.
I held his hand as I struggled to get to my feet. He held my arm as I limped (一瘸一拐地走) to the nearby bus stop and sat on the bench.
“My name is Mike,” he said with concern. “That was quite a fall you took, and you really need to see a doctor.”
“This bus goes past the hospital,” I said quickly, pointing to the bus sign above me.
Mike paused, and a look of sudden realization crossed his face. He pulled out his small white cup and dumped all the change into his hand.
“I know you don’t have any change on you,” he said, “I think this is just enough for you to take the bus.”
注意:1.续写词数应为150左右;
I was overcome with guilt as I remembered the lie I had told him only a few minutes earlier.

M: Balloons have been popular for centuries. The earliest balloons were made from parts of animals. Nowadays, balloons are made from plastic and filled with gases, to make them rise into the air. Balloons have been used in many ways, for example, in science and in art. They were also used as flying machines before aeroplanes were invented. A very big balloon made of special material was filled with a large amount of hot air. The air was heated by fire underneath and a large basket was attached to carry passengers. This form of transport became known as a hot-air balloon. The first passengers traveled in a hot-air balloon in 1783. The following year, in June 1784, the second hot-air balloon flight was named after the French Queen. It took off in front of the Kings of France and Sweden and traveled 52 kilometers in forty-five minutes. This flight was much faster than the first, but ended early because of bad weather. In the 1950s, an American inventor redesigned the balloon and hot-air ballooning has become a popular sport since then. Hot-air balloon rides have become tourist attractions and there are even festivals to celebrate them. The largest European festival is in Bristol, England. It lasts for four days and is regularly attended by around half a million people each year.

C. The physical reactions of the dish soap and food coloring.
D 22. C 23. B

How does the magic milk experiment work?部分中的“The dish soap breaks the surface tension of the milk, and the soap molecules (分子) try to attach to the fat molecules in the milk. This leads to bursts of fun rainbow colors.(洗碗皂打破了牛奶的表面张力,肥皂分子试图附着在牛奶中的脂肪分子上。这就产生了五彩缤纷的色彩。)”可知,洗碗皂和牛奶分子之间的相互作用产生了五彩缤纷的色彩。故选D项。
【22题详解】
细节理解题。根据Materials needed部分中的“Be sure to use the more inexpensive food coloring instead of gel (凝胶) coloring, which does not work as well.(一定要使用更便宜的食用色素,而不是凝胶色素,凝胶的效果不太好。)”
根据Magic milk experiment steps部分中的“Lightly brush the top of the milk with the cotton swab, and watch what happens.(用棉签轻轻地刷一下牛奶的顶部,看看会发生什么。)”
A 25. B 26. A 27. D
根据第一段中“I was scared when I was speaking in front of twenty people for the first time. My fear showed in my pace. I finished a 35-minute talk in 25 minutes. A professor asked me to slow down toward the end of the talk. (当我第一次在20个人面前演讲时,我很害怕。我的恐惧表现在我的步伐上。我在25分钟内完成了35分钟的演讲。一位教授让我在演讲快结束时放慢速度。)”可知,作者第一次在二十人面前演讲时,因为害怕语速太快,原本35分钟的演讲25分钟就讲完了,所以作者演讲的问题是语速太快,故选A项。
【25题详解】
推理判断题。根据第三段中“When I’m feeling super emotional, I need to rely on good old common sense. It says people forget you the moment they leave the room. (当我感到非常情绪化时,我需要依靠古老的常识。它说人们在离开房间的那一刻就忘记了你。)”及第四段中“I knew how he was feeling. I also knew I wouldn’t think of him for more than ten seconds the moment I left the conference room. (我知道他的感受。我也知道,在我离开会议室的那一刻,我想起他的时间不会超过十秒。)”可知,作者提到对 Marc 的采访是为了证实古老的常识,即第三段所提到的“It says people forget you the moment they leave the room. (它说人们在离开房间的那一刻就忘记了你。)”,故选B项。
【26题详解】
推理判断题。根据文章最后一段中“There’s nothing wrong with making mistakes. Just make sure you learn from them. It’s easy if you don’t take yourself too seriously. Look at yourself from someone else’s perspective and realize you’re unimportant. Nobody blames you. Nobody is even thinking about you. (犯错没有错。只要确保你向他们学习。如果你不把自己太当回事,这很容易。从别人的角度看自己,意识到你并不重要。没有人责怪你。甚至没有人在想你。)”可知,作者认为犯错没什么大不了的,要从别人的角度看自己,意识到自己在别人眼中并不重要,所以Marc应该认为自己在面试中的搞砸也没什么大不了的,故选A项。
27题详解】
推理判断题。根据最后一段中“Look at yourself from someone else’s perspective and realize you’re unimportant. Nobody blames you. Nobody is even thinking about you. It’s you, alone. So give it another shot. (从别人的角度看自己,意识到你并不重要。没有人责怪你。甚至没有人在想你。是你,一个人。所以再试一次。)”可知,作者建议人们从别人的角度看自己,意识到自己在别人眼中是不重要的,即要认识到自己在他人眼中的微不足道,故选D项。
C
C 29. C 30. B 31. D
根据第二段中“But over the years, running the newspaper became increasingly difficult. In March 2023, she had to make the painful decision to end the printing of the Record, leaving the county without a local news source. (但多年来,经营这份报纸变得越来越困难。2023年3月,她不得不做出痛苦的决定,终止the Record的印刷,让该县失去了当地的新闻来源)”可知,这份报纸被停印的主要原因是管理面临的挑战越来越大。故选C项。
【29题详解】
词句猜测题。根据画线词的上文“Across the U.S., local newspapers like the Record are fading away rapidly, with over a third having closed since 2005.
根据第四段中Meaghan Parker所说的话“There is no more local story than the environment (没有比环境更能反映当地情况的了)”和“It is the air we breathe. It’s the food we eat. It’s the water we drink. (这是我们呼吸的空气。是我们吃的食物。是我们喝的水)”可知,他认为环境深刻反映了当地情况。由此可知,环境问题与我们的生活息息相关。故选B项。
【31题详解】
主旨大意题。根据最后一段中“Local news is struggling, but innovative methods are emerging. Report for America and Press Forward are funding reporters and newsrooms. Some states use public money to strengthen journalism, while a congress hill offers tax breaks for supporting local outlets. Kleman notes that there’s no single solution, but many experiments are in progress. (地方新闻正在挣扎,但创新的方法正在出现。Report for America和Press Forward为记者和新闻编辑室提供资金。一些州使用公共资金来加强新闻业,而国会为支持地方媒体提供税收减免。克莱曼指出,没有单一的解决方案,但许多实验正在进行中)”可知,本段主要介绍了为了让地方新闻业复兴各方提供的支持。故选D项。

A Wonder for All
C 33. B 34. D 35. A

根据文章第三段“By opening the field to the widest possible pool of inventors, it can inspire countless potential solutions to a problem.(通过向尽可能多的发明家开放这个领域,它可以激发无数潜在的问题解决方案。)”
根据文章第四段“Consider the original Longitude prize, launched in 1714 to tackle the greatest scientific challenge of that century: how to effectively measure longitude at sea. Without the ability to do this, many ships lost their way and sank, so the British government established a prize of £20,000 to award whoever could solve the problem.(1714年设立的最初的经度奖就是为了解决那个世纪最大的科学挑战:如何在海上有效地测量经度。由于没有这种能力,许多船只迷失了方向而沉没,因此英国政府设立了2万英镑的奖金,奖励能解决这个问题的人。)”可知,最初的经度奖的目的是克服航行中一个紧迫的问题。故选D项。
【35题详解】
主旨大意题。分析文章内容可知,文章主要介绍了挑战奖,挑战奖是一种奖励,它鼓励人们创造性地解决问题。再根据文章最后一段“A decade after the award was launched in 2014, Sysmex Astrego’s system has won. The firm will receive millions, but it won’t be the only beneficiary; it is society that will be an even bigger winner.(该奖项于2014年推出,10年后,Sysmex Astrego的系统再次获奖。该公司将获得数百万美元,但它不会是唯一的受益者;社会将成为更大的赢家。)”可知,挑战奖将会让整个社会成为最大的赢家,所以A选项“人人共赢”适合用作文章标题。故选A项。

注意:1.续写词数应为150左右;
I was overcome with guilt as I remembered the lie I had told him only a few minutes earlier.
__________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
“Thank you,” he said gratefully when the bus was approaching.
__________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
I was overcome with guilt as I remembered the lie I had told him only a few minutes earlier. At that moment I realized that standing in front of me was such a kind and sincere man, different from what I had judged. I turned away from his offering hand, pulled out my wallet and dumped my own change into the palm of my hand. I felt Mike’s eyes on me as I counted through the money that I had told him didn’t even exist. I kept enough money for myself to take the bus to the hospital and then dropped the rest into his white cup. It was worth at least 10 dollars.
“Thank you,” he said gratefully when the bus was approaching. It was so nice of him to reach out one hand to help me stand up, with the other hand holding his cup tightly to his chest. As the bus slowed down in front of me, I turned around to Mike, saying, “You take care of yourself. It is cold outside.” Five minutes ago, I couldn’t have cared about him at all. “I will,” he smiled brightly. “And you take care of your leg.” I limped onto the bus and took a seat by the window. “Mike!” I murmured to myself. “Thank you for what you have taught me!”
