Ramu started a business with great enthusiasm but just after a few months his business went under. Time passed but Ramu didn't start any new work. His teacher got to know about his situation and called him to his home.
The teacher asked, “Why don't you start some other work?”
Ramu replied, “I gave my everything to my business and yet it still failed.”
The teacher tried to comfort him, saying “But that's life. Sometimes we get success and sometimes we don't. This doesn't mean that we stop working.”
“What's the point of doing work, when I can't be sure of success?" Ramu replied with a bit of annoyance.
The teacher took Ramu to a room and showed him a dead tomato plant. Ramu was confused and said, “It's dead. Why are you showing it to me?”
The teacher replied, “When I sowed its seed, I did everything right for it. I watered it, fertilized it, sprayed it with pesticide(杀虫剂). I took great care of it but it still died.” He stopped for a while and then said, “Doing work is the same... No matter how hard you try, you cannot decide what happens in the end. However, you can control those things in your hands. Just do your best!”
Ramu asked, “But if there is no guarantee of success then what's the use of doing anything?”
The teacher said, “You'd better not think like that...”
“What's wrong with that... I have given so much hard work, so much money, so much time; if success is only a matter of chance, then what is the use of doing so much?” said Ramu and he was about to leave.
Just then the teacher stopped him and said, “Before you leave, I want to show you one more thing.”

It was the first day of our new grade. Everyone in the classroom was chatting happily, excited to see each other again after the long holidays. When the door slid open, all of us stopped talking and turned to look. In came our teacher Ms. Sullivan, followed by an ordinary-looking boy,
“This boy’s name is Rafael.” Ms. Sullivan announced. “He’s a transfer student (转校生), and he’s going to be in our class starting from today. Make sure all of you welcome him warmly.”
The class clapped. But I didn't want to have a second look at the newcomer, for he had no outstanding qualities considering his small figure and casual T-shirt.
“Oh, I forgot to mention one thing.” Ms. Sullivan spoke up. “Rafael actually has hearing problems. Normally he would have hearing aids on, but his old ones have just been broken.
His doctor suggested that he stay at home until he got his new ones. However, Rafael insisted on attending his first day of school. So if you want to communicate with him, you have to write it on a piece of paper.”
This single speech sent the whole class up into an uproar (嘈杂). Some students looked at each other with expressions of surprise. Others voiced cries of concern out of pity.
Ms. Sullivan calmed everyone down. “I’d like someone to personally help him out throughout the day. Do I have any volunteers?”
“How can a disabled person be intelligent?” I thought to myself. I refused to raise my hand, expecting someone else would. But nobody did or said anything. Dead silence spread across the classroom.
It was by total bad luck that my eyes happened to meet Ms. Sullivan's.
“How about you, James?” She asked me. “Is it okay for you to take care of Rafael just for today?”
It is difficult to refuse a request by someone, especially if that person is a teacher. I sighed and nodded slightly. Ms. Sullivan gestured for Rafael to sit beside me and then asked us to share our holiday stories with the class.
Paragraph 1:
Immediately, the class became excited.

Being the youngest in my family has had its advantages, of course. But being the youngest also came with its fair share of troubles. I was often told what I couldn't do and why. I knew that my family loved me. They always tried to protect me, help me and take care of me, but I couldn't wait to show them I could do things by myself.
It was a hot day in Florida. The school year had just ended and it was time for summer vacation. We had just gotten a little black dog who we named One-Eyed.
Everybody wanted to do something for the dog: feed him, teach him tricks and take long walks with him. Everybody was so happy to have this little active, playful new addition to our family. I was so desperate to pet One-Eyed myself, too. Every time I asked my brother or my sister if I could do that, they would shout,“No!”or tell me that I had germs(细菌). Once, they even convinced me that I had so many germs and that if I touched One-Eyed he would die! I really believed them and was scared that something terrible would happen to the dog. Once I even confessed to my mom that I touched the dog when no one noticed. At first, my mom seemed very confused about what I was telling her, but then she realized that they were playing a joke on me to keep me away from the dog. My mom scolded my brother and sister, "You better stop teasing your little brother!" Little brother! That's exactly what I was. That really got my blood boiling. The frustration built up inside me as I watched them enjoy their time with One-Eyed, excluding me from the joyous moments. I knew I was capable of taking care of myself and forming my own connection with our new furry friend. Determination filled my heart, fueling a newfound sense of independence.
I took one look at the dog and decided, I was going to prove to everyone that I could pet and play with One-Eyed.______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Seeing this, my brother and sister couldn't believe their eyes. _________________________________________

There are too many treasures in life we take for granted, the worth of which we don’t fully realize until they’re pointed out to us in some unexpected way. So it was with Mama’s minestrone soup (意大利浓菜汤).
There was no recipe for her minestrone soup. For our large immigrant family, Mama’s soup guaranteed we would never go hungry. It was a symbol of security. Its recipe was created spontaneously (非计划安排地) from what was in the kitchen. And we could judge the state of our family economy by its contents. A hearty soup with tomatoes, pasta, beans, carrots, celery, onion, corn and meat indicated things were going well. A water y soup suggested hard times.
At one time, however, Mama’s soup pot became a source of embarrassment to me, for I feared it would cost me a new friend I had made at school. Sol was a thin, dark-haired boy, and an unusual pal for me because his father was a doctor and they lived in the best part of town. Often Sol invited me to his home for dinner. The family had a cook in a white uniform who worked in a kitchen with shining utensils (厨房用具). The food was good, but I found it bland (清淡的), lacking the heartiness of my home food served from flame-blackened pots. Moreover, the atmosphere matched the food. Everything was so formal. Sol’s mother and father were polite, but conversation around the table was subdued (克制的). And no one hugged! In our family, warm hugs were a constant and if you didn’t kiss your mother, she demanded: “What’s the matter, you sick?” But at that time in my life, all this was an embarrassment.
I had known Sol would like to eat dinner at our house, but that was the last thing I wanted. My family was so different.

My four-year-old son Jack had a vast collection of toy cars, his prized possessions. One day, I jokingly suggested, “Jack, how about giving away some of your toy cars to the children who don’t have any?” “No, these are mine,” he said angrily, holding on to his toy cars tightly. At that moment, I knew he didn’t grasp the importance of sharing. Therefore, I decided it was time for me to teach him a valuable lesson.
The next day, I planned a special day out with him with the aim of gently getting him to open his heart. Our special day began with a visit to the local park, a place where Jack always feels pleased. We found a tree coming into flower, bathed in the warm sunlight. Nearby, a group of children were playing together. “Look, Jack,” I pointed out. “See how they’re sharing their toys? Notice the smiles on their faces?” Those children attracted Jack’s attention. He watched carefully as one child passed a bright red toy truck to another, and he noticed how their faces lit up in a shared moment of happiness. It made him feel curious. I continued, “Sharing doesn’t just make others happy, it can make you feel good too.” Jack kept silent with his expression becoming thoughtful and a bit doubtful.
On the way home, we stopped by a small community center which was hosting a charity event. Volunteers, cheerful and warm, were collecting toys for the poor children. Tables in front of them were decorated with various kinds of toys. Jack observed some children of his age eagerly contributing toys, their faces shining with pride and happiness. “See, Jack,” I whispered. “A small act of kindness can bring great joy to you and others.” Jack made no reply but from his hesitant look I could see he was struggling with an internal conflict.

During the summer before Patty entered fifth grade, she decided to try a new sport. Swim training was nearly over and Patty was the fastest swimmer in her age group. She had always been the best. The neighborhood was offering a one-week tennis training course. Patty and her friend Darla got permission from their parents to join.
On Saturday morning, Darla’s mom took the girls to a store and bought them each a good, used tennis racket. “If you girls stick to tennis, then we’ll talk about a new racket. These will do for now.” The girls were excited about their new purchases. On Monday morning, at 7:00 a.m., Patty’s mom woke her up. “It’s time for tennis!” Patty covered her face. “Mom, it’s too early!” She made great effort to get out of bed and down to the breakfast table. Patty finished breakfast and ran to Darla’s house, then they walked to the court.
Mrs. Cane, the tennis coach, lined everyone up and started with the basics. After that, Mrs. Cane tirelessly taught them to practice their forehand and backhand. By the end of the week, Patty had made impressive progress. Mrs. Cane commented that Patty had lots of potential. Darla, on the other hand, was struggling. The other teenagers were having a tough time of it, too. Patty was the only one who seemed to get somewhere.
Since then, Darla had always been out in the August heat, practicing her serves or hitting the ball. Patty wasn’t really interested. She felt she was such a “natural” for tennis that she really didn’t need to practice. By the end of the summer, Darla began to get the hang of it. She joined a neighborhood junior tennis team. There would be matches every Thursday. Patty wanted to join as well, but she didn’t want to miss her favorite TV show. She told herself that she would join it when she got some free time. If Darla had fun, she would join the team in the spring.

Many years ago I stepped into a bookstore in Cincinnati in search of some books that I wanted. While I was there, a poor little boy, about twelve, came in to ask whether they had a world atlas(地图册) for sell.
“Yes. It costs one dollar, " replied the salesman. “I have only sixty-two cents, ” the boy said. “Would you let me have it and wait a little while for the rest of the money?” His request being refused, the boy left. I followed him. “And what now?” I asked.
“I shall try another place, sir. ”
“Do you mind if I go too and see how you succeed?”
“If you like, ” he said in surprise.
Four times I saw the look on the boy's face turn to disappointment. But he continued. When we entered the fifth store, he told the bookseller what had happened. When asked why he wanted the atlas so much, the boy said, “My father was a sailor, but he is dead. I want to know about the places he used to go to and I'm going to be a sailor, too. ”
Deeply touched, the bookseller sold the boy an atlas and presented him with a new pencil for his perseverance. I also gave him two dollars for other books he wanted. Tears in his eyes, he told us his name is William Hartley. He hoped to repay us some day.
Many years later, I left for Liverpool by water. At the end of the journey, there came a terrible storm and the ship was in trouble. A great leak was filling the ship with water. The crew was made up of strong and able men. But after fighting for one whole night with the water still flowing in, the sailors gave up desperately.
But the captain didn't give up. He ordered every man to his position and went below to look for the leak. As he passed me, I asked whether there was any hope of saving the ship. He looked at me, firmly saying, “Yes, sir. As long as one inch of this ship remains above water, there is hope. ”

In the heart of the forest, there was an annual event that all animals looked forward to- the Great Forest Race. The big animals, like the majestic deer, the powerful bears, and the swift foxes, always dominated the race. They believed that their size and strength were the keys to victory.
Among the small animals, there was a brave rabbit named Hopper who had always dreamt of winning the Great Forest Race. Hopper was small, but he had quick feet and a determined spirit.
The day of the race arrived, and the forest was filled with excitement. The big animals took off, their powerful legs carrying them swiftly through the forest. The small animals, led by Hopper, followed closely behind.
As the race progressed, the big animals began to slow down. Their size and strength, which they had thought were advantages, became obstacles as they struggled to navigate the twisty paths and steep hills of the forest.
Hopper, on the other hand, bounded gracefully over the obstacles. His small size allowed him to weave through the trees with ease, and his determination kept him going strong.
One by one, the big animals began to fall behind. They watched in amazement as Hopper and the other small animals passed them by.
Finally, the small animals, led by Hopper, had not only participated but had also triumphed in face of adversity. The big animals realized that they had been wrong to underestimate the small animals. They had judged them based on their size, without considering their skills or determination.

It was the 2019 National Senior Games in Albuquerque, New Mexico. I was there for the 1,500-meter race. Yes, you heard it right — four times around the track, 1,500 meters, at the age of 93.
In advance of the tough race, we’d stood baking in the sun for at least an hour while the committee got the race walk organized. We’d walked almost the full distance of the race getting registered and into position. We’d stood in the sun listening to the directions: heel first, then shift weight to the ball of the foot.
There were forty-four other contestants but only two in my age group, ninety- to ninety-four-year-old women, so I was counting on the bronze. I decided to keep my mind on “weight-on-the-heel, weight-on-the-ball-of-the-foot, go Jean go”.
As I passed the finish line for the first time, my son cheered and yelled, “Go, Jean, go!” By the time I finished another lap and passed the finish line a second time, other people sitting in the stands joined in. I yelled back, “Thanks!”
I was soon being passed by walkers from other age groups. As they went by, they said, “You can do it. Keep going.”
I started getting the little red dots at the back of my eyes that signal lack of oxygen. I kept blinking my eyes, trying to see. I passed the finish line a third time. I was on the last lap.
I tried to change my posture (姿势) to put the stress in a different place. My cane (拐棍) was having trouble finding the ground. I was gasping (喘气) for breath.
Two judges came running toward me. “Don’t give up,” one of them said. “You’re going to make it.” The other told me to move over a lane, which would be slightly shorter. My cane was having trouble again. “The finish line isn’t far now,” the judge said.
“How far?” I asked.
“Up there, that line of trees.”

When I was in middle school, my family moved to Seattle, where my parents started their new business-a small grocery store downstairs my house. As a girl of shy and reserved nature, I had to take a fresh start to fit into the sophisticated city life.
One sunny day, my school announced an exciting event, a talent show for the local food bank. Students were encouraged to show their unique talents in front of the public in the city hall on National Day. A buzz of excitement filled the school as everyone began preparing for the big day. Deep down, I felt a spark of curiosity and a desire to participate. However, my self-doubt held me back, "I don't have any special skills to share. "
Days turned into weeks, and the talent show drew closer. I couldn't shake the upsetting feeling until one day Emma, one of the most popular girls in my class, came to me while I was helping in the grocery store after class. "How about singing together in the talent show?" she grinned. "I heard you singing a tune, along the way back home. I couldn't help following you here. "Gosh, I couldn't believe my ears. Emma, with personality and popularity, acknowledged my little talent. Since Emma had the world's prettiest voice, I felt like being favoured by fortune. "You two? The talent show for the food bank?" My mum bent towards us and her face lit up. "A big occasion. " Then a light bulb seemed to go in her head. "Why not practise right now upstairs? I bet you'll be a perfect match. "Winking at us, she seemed to know we were thinking alike.
Emma and I embarked on rehearsing almost every single day after school. We brainstormed, exchanged ideas and rehearsed the scene. As the days rolled by, I was feeling pretty good about our act. But the day before the performance, Emma called that she had an acute stomachache and was not in any shape to perform.

All I did was show my little sister how to grow plants. Dig a hole. Put in a seed. Cover it with dirt. Water it. Wait. “See, Laynie,” I explained, “a whole plant will grow from this tiny seed. All we have to do is water it.”
Laynie had her own watering can so she could “help” me in the garden. One day, after everything was watered, she ran to the fence and started sprinkling water on another spot. I walked over and saw a fresh patch of dirt near the fence.
“Did you plant something there?” I asked.
“Yes,” she said. “I’m growing a pencil. My purple pencil got too small, so I planted it.”
“What? But, Laynie—”
I should have explained things right then, but I just muttered, “Uh…I never grew one before.”
Later I got what seemed like a great idea. I dug up Laynie’s pencil and “planted” a brand-new purple pencil. Laynie was really excited when she saw it. “My pencil grew!” she shouted.
A few days later, Laynie was watering on the same spot. Two days later, new crayons sticking their pointy little heads out, thanks to me. Laynie jumped up and down and yelled, “They look like flowers!” She “picked” them and ran into the house.
Next, Laynie grew an adult bear doll from a tiny one, a soup spoon from a teaspoon, and a hand mirror from a piece of glass. When she claimed that she had grown these things, I just kept my mouth shut! Actually, it was fun trying to think of what should grow from Laynie’s seeds. And it was cool to see her get excited.
One day I saw her patting down some dirt near the fence again, so I knew she’d just planted something. My heart dropped to my feet when she asked, “How long does it take to grow a goldfish, Brad?” I couldn’t speak.
“Not long, I bet!” said Laynie. She knelt down to whisper “Grow, Molly. Grow!” before she skipped back to the house.

They were upset and decided something needed to be done to stop the beautiful sea becoming consumed by waste. One weekend, Maria and Peter brought a big bag to the beach and determined to clean it up.Sweat streamed down from their forehead while they bent down and picked up the plastic bags.To their disappointment, after a day’s hard work, there were still many plastic bags lying on the beach or floating in the water.Going home with aching legs and arms, Maria and Peter were almost defeated by a strong sense of failure.
That night over dinner with their parents, the pair ate silently.Noticing their low spirits, Mother asked gently, “You two looked so down. What happened?”Exchanging glances with Peter, Maria replied in a low voice, “It’s those annoying plastic bags.We tried to clean up but it was just impossible.”Understanding the pair’s disappointment, their father patted them on the back and comforted,” Well, it’s really hard for just two of you to fix such a big problem.” “Just two of us.” complained Maria and Peter, looking at each other.Suddenly, an idea lashed through their minds, their eyes shining with excitement.“Yes, that’s the point! Waiting and praying were a daily routine for Barbara Schmitt, but today the prayers were more intense. Her three-year-old granddaughter, Michelle, had been showing danger signs that made an immediate liver transplant critical, but the telephone was as silent as the snowy scene outside.
Then at nine in the morning, the phone rang. A hospital in Omaha had located the right liver donor, they were sure it was a match for Michelle, and they needed her there within 12 hours. Barbara couldn't tell what to do first—rejoice or despair, as they were, snowbound (被雪困住的), 600 miles away. “We're snowed in, " Barbara told the medical coordinator on the line, "and the airport is 17 miles away and there's no way we're going to get there. ""Don't give up, "the woman told Barbara. "You have 12 hours to reach Omaha!"
Fortunately, the phone lines were still working, so she started calling Sharon Stevens, who runs Hair Angels, a fund for children with special needs. Sharon had already lined up a Lear jet(医疗飞机) and two pilots to fly the Schmitts to Omaha when transplant time came. How to get from the Schmitts' house to the jet was the big question.
Sharon called for help through the local radio station, wanting to invite listeners to call in with ideas and suggestions. Teresa Amshoff heard the story and suggested that the church parking lot next to her house, only a mile from the Schmitts, would make a perfect helicopter landing pad(降落场). As precious minutes ticked away, the Amshoffs rushed from door to door, begging for help to clear the lot. Neighbors, came without hesitation.

At the beginning of this year, my daughter Helen spent a month in the hospital fighting for her life. Since then, she has had to deal with the disease as well as many side effects. She has met each challenge, disappointment and setback with courage.
With her 16th birthday approaching, Helen dreamt of a party and campfire at the beach with friends, relatives, and her beloved dog, Ginger. It took a while, but I finally found a good beach that allowed dogs and campfires and had easy access. However, a week before her party, Helen’s disease worsened.
Our friend Ian called the night before the party and turned our plans upside down. The small beach we’d selected and the surrounding beaches would host a 30,000-person event on the party night and would be closed. It was a disaster because we had researched no other nearby beach would work.
Helen had her heart set on having her dog and a campfire at the beach, but as usual, she didn’t complain. In her young life, she’s dealt with much worse things than a destroyed birthday party. She sat down and began to quietly cry. After a while Helen decided she’d rather have the party at our home so she could have her dog and a campfire. We called the invitees with the changed plans.
How to design a party at home with dogs and campfire was a challenge. It occurred to us that we could make full use of our yard. Ian’s wife Jayme came first with some small signs, which read: “Welcome to Campbell Beach, where dogs and campfires are welcome. Where the beach is small and the waves are so far away, you must close your eyes to see them, but not so the love for Helen and her little dog. Happy Birthday, Helen!”

The Beautiful Game
I have a favorite footballer. His name is Chris Bush and he is a defender for the National League team Boreham Wood in Hertfordshire. He's 31, and he plays in the number 5 shirt, and... well, I can't tell you that much more about him, really, because, in general, I struggle to focus when it comes to football.
My disinterest in "The Beautiful Game" has been lifelong. At primary school, my classmates spent lunch break playing football, while I was in the library getting kicks from books and computers. In Games lessons, like all fat kids, I was put "in defence" which involved chatting to my friends and occasionally pretending to be bothered about where the ball was. I pretended to be expert in the game, cheering when a goal was scored, although I didn't understand the rules.
As I got older, I stopped trying to fake it. In fact, I wore my aversion to football as a badge of honor, a fundamental part of my identity. I didn't understand why so many people loved this sport. "It's only a game!" I'd tell Dad, as he excitedly urged me to watch the game. When a big game was on, I'd go shopping instead of watching the game like most of the people around me. But, occasionally when meeting a friend's father, I'd meet questions like "Who do you support?" And I would feel my heart sink, having no idea how to answer that.
This attitude of mine had stopped me from hours of conversation, and even entire friendships with people that I might otherwise have enjoyed. I couldn't change the fact that I found football boring, but was coming to regret that I was an outsider. I never had the chance to go and watch a game and sometimes I would wonder what it would be like to watch a game and feel the atmosphere of the fans.

Mrs. Green in Room 301
The notice was posted next to the mailboxes in the apartment building I’d just moved into in Brooklyn, New York. “A Mitzvah for Mrs. Green,” it read. “Sign up to drive Mrs. Green in Room 301 from her chemotherapy(化疗) treatments twice a month.”
Since I wasn’t a driver, I couldn’t add my name, but the word “mitzvah” lingered in my thoughts. It means “to do a good deed”. According to my grandmother, it also had another meaning. This was the one she was always pointing out to me because she noticed how shy I was about letting people do things for me. “Linda, it’s a blessing to do a mitzvah for someone else, but sometimes it’s a blessing to let another person do something for you.”
Three weeks later, on the night of taking my final exam, the snow was falling steadily for hours. Pride would not let me knock on a door and say, “It’s a 10-minute ride by car but a long wait for the bus, and it’s a 30-minute bus ride, so could you possibly give me a lift to school?”So I trudged(艰难地走) to the bus stop. For an hour, I prayed desperately that a bus would come. Then I gave up. The wind at my back pushed me toward home and I seemed to hear Grandma’s whisper: Ask someone for a lift! It could be a mitzvah. That idea had never really made sense to me. And even if I wanted to ask someone for a good deed, there wasn’t a soul on the street.
But as I pushed the door of my apartment building open, I found myself face to face with a woman at the mailbox. In that split second, desperation overcame pride, “Could you possibly give me a lift?” I hurriedly said, feeling quite awkward and uncomfortable, “I never ask anybody for a lift, but...” An odd look crossed the woman’s face, and I added, “Oh! I live in Room 401. I moved in recently!”

When lightning struck
I was in the tiny bathroom in the back of the plane when I felt a jolt (颠簸). and then the horrible swerve (急转弯) that threw me against the door. Somehow, I managed to unlock the door and climb out awkwardly. The flight attendants, all with their seat belts fastened, waved wildly for me to sit down. As I struggled toward my seat, passengers looked up at me with the panic-stricken expressions of creatures who knew they were about to die.
“I think we got hit by lightning,” the girl in the seat next to mine said, her voice shaking. She was from a small town in east Texas, and this was only her second time on an airplane. She had won a trip to London by competing in a high school geography bee and was supposed to make a connecting flight when we landed in Newark.
Across the aisle sat a charming young woman, who had been working on her laptop. Now she put it away. She looked around and then her eyes met mine. “Are you OK?” she asked me. I forced a smile back, when the pilot’s voice came over the speaker. I heard vaguely through my fear, “Engine number two...emergency landing... New Orleans.” When he was done, the voice of a flight attendant came on, reminding us of the emergency procedures she had reviewed before takeoff. Understandably, I had never paid attention to this drill, always figuring that if we ever got to the point where we needed to use life jackets, I would have already died of terror.
Now we began a roller-coaster ride through the thunderclouds. I was ready to faint, but when I saw the face of the girl next to me, I pulled myself together, reached for her hand and reassured her that we were going to make it, “What a story you’re going to tell when you get home!” I said. “After this, London’s going to seem like small potatoes.”

I’m from the fishing town of Kinsale, in Ireland. Life is pretty good there, but Dubai caught my attention when I was 18. I moved there myself 10 years ago as a 30-year-old film-maker. It’s been a wild ride, full of chaos and wonder.
My wife, Christine, lives here with me; when her sister Angela came to visit in April this year, the three of us set off in my pickup truck. It was a cloudless day, touching 40 ℃. The heat and humidity were violent, so we had to sightsee from the car.
We took the scenic route between Dubai and Ras al-Khaimah, a charming city in the north. A year earlier, while off-roading with a friend, I got stuck at a water crossing there, at the only inlet on the coast, where the sea flows into a swampy lagoon (咸水湖). I had to be rescued, and learned how quickly the tide (潮水) could come in.
Christine spotted what looked like the Loch Ness monster stuck in the sand. We decided to investigate and drove up to where the sand met the lagoon. It was a camel, not moving.
Since relocating here, I have always kept a shovel, rope, torches and knives in my car—getting stuck in the desert can be debilitating (耗费体力的).
I got out my shovel and approached the camel. It was a female; we nicknamed her Stucky. It looked as if she had been trapped for hours—she was in quite deep. I’ve been around camels a lot in Dubai; they are massive. They can be friendly, but they can also be fierce. I approached Stucky slowly and started to gently dig away the sand around her. I kept patting her. I knew if she swung her head around quickly, she could injure herself, or me.

Mike, aged 14, was a music fan, especially a fan for violin. He expected to be a music star one day. Unfortunately, born into a poor family depending on delivering newspapers and milk, he couldn’t afford a violin. He had thought of asking his parents to pay for one but finally he abandoned possessing the impossible musical instrument.
Mike’s neighbor, Joseph, happened to be a violinist. The greatest pleasure Mike found after school every day was enjoying the beautiful melodies floating out of Joseph’s window. Not until dark did Mike sneak into his own room. And every time Mike’s mother asked him why he came home late, Mike would say he was lost in music.
“Why not spend more time in your lessons instead, sweetheart? After all, music can’t make money if you’re not so famous.” In order to prove he could realise his dream, he knew he must have his own violin and practise more.
Mike found a job at a nearby church, running errands for the servicemen. One day, another music player happened to learn about Mike’s situation and offered him an old violin as a gift. He even promised to teach him how to play after church services at the weekends. Months later, Mike learned violin very well.
The first performance he made was on the roadside of a lonely street. From time to time passersby stopped to watch him play. And a few even left some coins in his hat lying on the ground. When it was time for Mike to go back, he heard a woman’s cry. Following the sound, Mike spotted her and discovered the truth that she was called Connie, a trainee in a cafeteria, and that she had just had an awful day at work and was yelled by the boss.

One spring day, the wind was gentle and the sun was shining brightly. The sky was clear and blue, and the temperature was comfortable. It was a perfect day for a walk outside.
Our teacher Mr. White asked us all to go out of the classroom to enjoy the natural sights and sounds of the natural world. But before Ruby and I were ready to go out to play, Cathy signed to both of us to stop. We were the best sisters, playing together each time.
"Come over, ladies! Guess what I discovered in Mr. White's locker, with a mysterious smile on her face, Cathy rocked a chalk box with pieces of colorful chalk inside.
"Fabulous! How exciting it would be to write on the blackboard with it!" Ruby exclaimed with curiosity and expectation.
"But we can't do it without our Mr. White's permission, "I said timidly.
"Nobody will find it out. If you're a chicken, you can stand by and just watch. Anyway, Cathy and I would have a try, "said Ruby. She picked out a piece of pink chalk and started to draw a dress.
Not to make them believe I was a chicken, I unwillingly involved myself in the creation of art. Soon I lost myself in the picture drawing though I knew we were breaking the class rule: never touch the teachers' supplies. A moment later we drew a rainbow, a rabbit and a dinosaur respectively. Then we went on drawing many other objects with our imagination. It was real fun.
Suddenly, I noticed the clock above the blackboard. It pointed to 10: 28, only two minutes to the end of the interval. We must erase all on the blackboard before Mr. White came back. If we were caught, we would be punished by doing the cleaning for the class in the next three days.
In a hurry, I picked up an eraser and started destroying our art pieces. As the chalk was so sticky that it left a heavy sign on the blackboard. I had to rub it carefully.

Snowflake Bentley
In the days when Vermont farmers worked the land and spent time with livestock, there lived a boy Willie Bentley who loved snow more than anything in the world. Vermont is no stranger to snow and Bentley's happiest days were snowstorm days. He watched snowflakes (雪花) on his glove, on the vast farm fields, and on the dark metal handle of the barn (谷仓) door. He said snow was the blessings of Nature. However, he could not share snowflakes because he could not save them.
Later, when his mother gave him an old microscope, he mainly used it to look at snow. While kids of his neighbors chased hens and had snowball fights, Willie was catching snowflakes. Day after stormy day he studied the icy crystals (冰晶).
Their delicate patterns were even more beautiful than he had imagined. Willie decided he must find a way to save snowflakes so others could see their wonderful designs. For three winters he tried drawing snow crystals. They always melted in the black tray (托盘) that he used to catch them before he could finish the drawings.
When he was sixteen, Willie read of a camera with its own microscope. "If I had that camera I could photograph snowflakes, he told his mother. Willie's mother knew that he would not be happy until he could share what he had seen.
"Spending time on snow is just foolishness, his mother said. Still, she loved his son. When Willie was seventeen his parents spent their savings and bought the camera. It cost as much as ten cows. Willie was sure it was the best of all cameras. Even so, his first pictures were failures-no better than shadows. Yet he would not quit. Mistake by mistake, snowflake by snowflake, Willie worked through every storm. Winter ended, the snow melted, and he had no good pictures. He waited for another season of snow. One day, in the second winter, he tried a new experiment. And it worked! Willie had figured out how to photograph snowflakes! "Now everyone can see the great beauty in a tiny crystal, " he said.

As a child, I distinctly remembered watching some PBS cartoon character get glasses; the poor girl was made fun of by her peers when playing basketball. I silently thanked God for my good eyesight — but I spoke too soon.
When I entered the sixth grade, I could no longer see writing on the whiteboard clearly. So, I received my first pair of glasses. I only wore them in the classroom, and didn’t mind them too much. Self-image was not important for the then little girl.
Entering my freshman year in high school, I began to miss basketball shots in games — more so than usual. My eyes were re-examined, and the doctor determined that my eyesight had become worse. I would either have to wear glasses full time, or try contacts (隐形眼镜). Being the passionate athlete I was, I bypassed the annoyance of glasses and began to wear contacts. My entire world was transformed. Trees actually had leaves. The faces around me radiated individual expressions. And I could see the basket a whole lot better now. I was overjoyed with my newfound sight — and appearance.
When my senior year came along, I began to have trouble with my right eye. It got to the point where whenever I wore my contacts, my right eye would suffer an intolerable, stabbing pain, forcing me to take the contacts out. It was physically impossible to wear them. I would be in the doctor’s office at least three times a month, trying to solve the mystery of the problem with my eye.
I was beginning to get frustrated. I didn’t mind wearing my glasses to see the board in school, but all the time? At dances? At basketball games? No. That was not okay with me. I couldn’t imagine how I would be laughed at by my peers on the court. I hoped and prayed the doctor would cure my illness soon. That hope was soon crushed. No medicine had worked, and there was nothing left to try. He advised that I wear my glasses full time. But I couldn’t hate my glasses more.

We had moved to a new town for my husband’s work. After living here for just a couple of weeks, I was more than ready to pick up my luggage and move back home. I was lonely for a friend. My boy Samuel was lonely. My husband, Lonny, adapted just fine, but he was occupied with work most of the time.
I missed our old neighborhood. It had been like a closely knitted community where neighbors chatted over fences. Newcomers were welcomed with chocolate brownies (巧克力蛋糕) and carrot bread. It had been easy to find friends there.
Our new community was different. It seemed that family roots grew deep. Deep as the Mississippi River that flowed past this tiny river town. Breaking in was tough.
“I’m so alone here,” I said to Lonny one evening. Lonny is a good listener, and a problem solver. “What have you done to meet people?” he asked. “I go to the park every day. I even dropped by a book salon (读书沙龙) at the library the other day and came across a nice lady with a boy.”
“Sounds not bad,” he said. “Did you talk to her?” The answer was no. It wasn’t that people here were unkind. I just didn’t feel like initiating conversations, and I preferred minding my own business in a new environment.
A few more months passed and winter settled in. It was harder than ever to meet people. I began to feel bitter. I was tired of trying to fit in a place where we didn’t belong.
Lonny noticed my low spirits. “Amy, you look unapproachable, with your arms crossed and everything,” he whispered in my ear one afternoon. He and I were sitting in the yard. Samuel, our five-year-old was playing baseball next to us.
“It doesn’t matter. I’m not going to have friends here.” Just then Samuel looked up. He must’ve heard our whispers. “Mom’s right, Dad. We’ll never ever have friends here. And we just want to go back to our old home.” I sat there and looked at my tiny innocent son. His words mirrored my attitude. And I didn’t like the disturbing reflection.

_________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Paragraph 2:
Then Rafael rose and walked onto the platform.
________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】Paragraph 1:
Immediately, the class became excited. Some could hardly wait to tell their seatmates about their holiday trips, eyes shining and faces glowing with joy. Those who hadn’t been anywhere bombarded them with inquiring questions. Enormous joy welled up in every corner of the classroom. Obviously confused at the sudden noisy situation, Rafael turned to me for reasons in written words. Surprisingly, my explanation put a smile on his face. “Any volunteer to share your story?” asked Ms. Sullivan, whose words I set down on paper for Rafael.
Paragraph 2:
Then Rafael rose and walked onto the platform. Greeting us with a confident smile, Rafael shared his story in a magnetic voice, which left me stunned. I felt more ashamed to learn that he ran a website to help children with hearing problems than guilty about stupidly thinking disabled people couldn’t be intelligent. Then his voice was lost in a thunderous outburst of applause. Feeling a lump in the throat, I clapped my hands even more loudly, determined never to judge a book by its cover.
Then Rafael rose and walked onto the platform.(然后Rafeal站了起来,走上讲台) 本段应该写Rafeal走上讲台后分享的故事,且故事主题应是Rafeal并没有因为自己听力问题而自卑,反而因此做了更有意义的事情,才能呼应前文中提及的How can a disabled person be intelligent?而出现转折,从而在文章最后领悟到“不可以貌取人”。

I took one look at the dog and decided, I was going to prove to everyone that I could pet and play with One-Eyed. Determined, I approached One-Eyed slowly, extending my hand towards him. As I got closer, the dog wagged his tail and looked up at me, as if he knew I was about to do something brave. Taking a deep breath, I gently placed my hand on his furry head. The moment our skin touched, I felt an incredible rush of joy and excitement. One-Eyed didn't seem bothered at all; in fact, he seemed to enjoy the attention. It was as if a bond had instantly formed between us.
Seeing this, my brother and sister couldn't believe their eyes. Their jaws dropped in astonishment. "You did it!" my sister exclaimed, her voice filled with awe. My brother, still in disbelief, stammered, "But... but we told you all those things!" I smiled triumphantly, realizing that I had proven them wrong. "You see," I said confidently, "I am capable of doing things on my own. And just because I'm the youngest doesn't mean I can't take care of myself and be responsible." Being the youngest had its challenges, but it also shaped me into the resilient, determined person I am today. And I will forever be grateful to One-Eyed for showing me that age and size don't define one's abilities.

【答案】 Finally when Sol asked again if he could come to our house, I had to say yes. The day Sol came over I was very nervous. Mama and the other family members welcomed him with embraces. Soon after sitting at the heavy, deeply stained table, we were instantly faced with bowls of soup. “Sol,” Mama asked, “you know what this is?” “Soup?” Sol responded. “No soup,” Mama said emphatically. “It’s minestrone!” She then launched into a long explanation of the power of minestrone: how it cured headaches, colds. And Mama even said the soup would make Sol strong. I was so embarrassed, convinced that this would be the last time I would ever see my friend Sol.
But to my amazement, I noticed Sol took a spoonful of Mama’s minestrone soup. His initial he sitation gave way to genuine enjoyment. And as the evening progressed, I saw him relax, his rigid posture melting away in my family’s easy atmosphere. After he finished his bowl, he asked for two more. “I like it a lot,” he said, slurping. When we were saying our good-byes, Sol confided, “You sure have a great family.” Then he added, “Boy, you are lucky!” Lucky? I wondered. Suddenly, it dawned on me that true wealth wasn’t measured in polished silver or spotless kitchens. It was found in the simple joys of family, laughter, and a steaming bowl of Mama’s minestrone soup.

As we were about to leave, a little girl arrived. Jack’s gaze was fixed on the girl who was no older than him. She walked into the community center with a firm step, her hands holding a well-worn teddy bear tightly. Handing the volunteer her teddy bear, she said, “This is my only toy, but I want to give it away to pass on my best wishes to others.” Jack’s eyes widened as he absorbed the simple yet powerful message. Then his hesitant expression was replaced by a determined look.
Moved by the little girl, Jack urged me to take him home. Upon arriving home, he rushed into his bedroom and care fully sorted through his toy cars. “Dad, I want to give these to other kids,” he said earnestly, showing me a fistful of his favorites. We packed them together and headed back to the community center. As we arrived, Jack eagerly handed his cars over to the volunteers, his eyes full of the joy of sharing. Seeing his transformation filled my heart with huge pride. It was a meaningful day for both of us.

【答案】【参考范文】
The week before school started, Mrs. Cane held another training course. Darla and Patty signed up immediately. In a class, Mrs. Cane asked the teenagers to play in turn. Darla came first, impressing others with her excellent performance. Mrs. Cane was pleased with Darla’s progress. “Well, I can tell who’s been practicing!” she smiled. Soon it was Patty’s turn. Everyone looked at the “talent” expectantly. Yet, Patty had not practiced and was far behind the rest, which was a shock for all. Patty was upset and absent until the class was over.
Patty couldn’t stop thinking of her poor performance on the way home. She realized she needed change if she still wanted to continue with tennis. The next day, Patty came to Darla’s team when they practiced to ask whether she could join. Warmly welcomed, she became a member of the team that day. Weak though she was, Patty enjoyed herself and worked hard at practice. She finally found that “natural talent” got her nowhere without diligence and she was able to join in the fun. That was one of the best lessons of her life.

1. 续写词数应为150左右;
2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
Three times during that day we encountered rather dangerous situations.

[参考范文]
Three times during that day we encountered rather dangerous situations. But the cool-headed captain's courage, perseverance and powerful will inspired everyone on board, and we all went to work together. In the end we survived rough seas. With the ship successfully docking in Liverpool, I heard many people cheering with excitement and saw the captain standing on the deck with a smile. Thinking that the ship would have sunk with all on board had it not been for the captain, I decided to go to thank him for making us out of the woods.
Before I expressed my thanks to him, the captain said first, “Sir, didn't you recognize me?” I shook my head and was a little confused after thinking back for a while. “Do you remember the boy you followed who had great difficulty in getting a world atlas some thirty years ago in Cincinnati?" he asked. “Oh, yes, I remember that boy very well. His name is William Hartley, " I said excitedly. “I' m William Hartley, " the captain laughed. “Years ago, you got the atlas through perseverance, and now it's the perseverance that saves our lives, " I said.
“the sailors gave up desperately “ But the captain didn't give up. He ordered every man to his position and went below to look for the leak”可知, 本段续写内容应包括船长坚持不懈拯救轮船及乘客的情况, 且最终使轮船和乘客脱离危险以及乘客和船员激动的心情等;为与第二段内容紧密衔接, 本段续写还应提及作者要向船长表示感谢的内容。续写第之段的开头语是在“我”向他表示感谢之前, 船长先说道:“先生, 您没认出我吗?”再联系前文故事情节可知, 本段续写应讲述作者了解到船长是他之前帮助过的少年William Hartley以及二人重逢后的情况, 可以对话为主。

Quickly assessing the situation, I dialed emergency services and requested immediate assistance.

【答案】范文
The last 100 meters felt like a marathon, but I was determined to finish the race. Before my “sprint” (冲刺), I slowed down a bit, steadied my cane and took a deep breath. Then I staggered to the finish line, using every last bit of my strength. After what seemed like a century, I heard everyone shouting, “Good job, Jean!” At that time, I could just make out a man running towards me, whose hands caught me as I collapsed into a yellow chair under the tree. From the man came a familiar voice: “I’m proud of you, Mom.” That was the last thing I could remember.
An hour later, I came to, surrounded by my son and a doctor. My son told me what happened after I crossed the finish line: I fainted from the blazing heat and lack of oxygen. So he took me to the chair and helped me cool down while the doctor hooked up my oxygen. But that was not the thing I really cared about at that point. “What about the result? I hope I have won a bronze.” I said in a weak voice. “You didn’t win the bronze,” he replied with a mysterious smile, “but you did win a silver!”

阅读下面材料, 根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段, 使之构成一篇完整的短文。

I was completely knocked out by the news. Without Emma's voice to guide me, I would definitely mess up and this was not how everything was supposed to go! As I stood there, feeling at a loss, a gentle touch on my shoulder brought me back to reality. It was my mom, wearing a comforting smile. After having a brief idea of my story, she said in a firm tone, "You've worked so hard. You can make it on your own. "Memories of countless rehearsal came flooding back, drowning my fears and losses. Determinedly, I adjusted my performance to a solo.
Finally came the big moment. Taking a deep breath, I stepped onto the stage, enveloped in the glow of the lights. At first, my voice trembled with nervousness, but as the song progressed, my confidence soared. I poured my emotions into the performance, letting my voice carry my feelings into the air. The crowd watched in awe, their applause and cheers echoing in the hall. Facing the overwhelming response, I knew that I had conquered my fears. Yes, the unexpected discouragement can be a blessing in disguise if we have a belief in ourselves and never give up our dreams.
【参考范文2】
I was completely knocked out by the news. A shiver of gloomy feeling passed through my stomach as I heard the news. The idea of being left alone onstage made me tremble, let alone singing in front of so many audience. Without Emma's company, I murmured to myself, this talent show would definitely be an impossible task. When I thought all the efforts to rehearsal would be in vain, sadness came in waves in my heart. Suddenly out of nowhere appeared my mother before me. Affectionately stroking my hair, she looked at me with a soft, determined glow in her eyes, as if by magic giving me a strength with which to conquer all difficulties and fears. She said quietly but firmly, "I believe you can make it. So I nodded and made a decision.
Finally came the big moment. Standing backstage, nervousness came flooding over me. The moment my name was called, I could feel butterflies in my stomach flying wildly. My trembling legs brought me onstage, palms sweating and heart racing. I cast my eyes randomly to the audience and spotted a familiar face at the corner. It was Emma who came to watch my performance. Pale as she appeared, she nodded and exchanged a determined glance with me, which timely put my heart back in place. With the music rising, I began my singing and immersed myself in it completely. When I finished, the auditorium erupted into a sea of cheers. I eventually realized where the real sources of confidence came from. Actually, every cloud has a silver lining(一线光明) and every individual possesses talents.

Green Thumb
注意:1.续写词数应为150左右;
2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。

______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Later I found Laynie sitting by the spot where Molly was buried.
______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
One possible version:
I sat down with my back to the fence and thought for a long time. Sighing, I decided there was only one right thing to do. I got up, took some things from the shed, and went inside. When I displayed the short pencil, the crayons, the teaspoon... on the table, Laynie was dumbfounded. Then I explained how I’d dug up and replaced all of her things. “No!” she screamed, red-faced. With a big shove, she knocked everything off the table. “Laynie,” I swallowed hard and added, “Molly isn’t going to grow either.” At this, she burst into tears and ran off. The heart pierced with guilt, I felt like a worm.
Later I found Laynie silting by the spot where Molly was buried. I sat down beside her, gently held her in my embrace and apologized. Laynie turned her face away. I went on, ‘‘See, you can grow things from seeds—not from pencils or... dead things. OK?” “Just seeds?” she asked, face still tear-stained. I nodded. She looked at me for a minute as if thinking about something. Later that day, after we had a funeral for Molly, I saw Laynie patting down some dirt on Molly’s grave. My heart tightened. “I’m growing some forget-me-nots, so Molly won’t forget me,” she said. This time, I thought “the green thumb” would have a real harvest.

Maria and Peter lived in a coastal city. The greatest pleasure in summer for them was to swim at their local beach after school. But one day they started to lose their enthusiasm for swimming in the waters.More often than not, they would find plastic bags thrown on the beach.Worse sill, as they swam in the water, some plastic bags would float around them and even stick to their legs when they walked to the shore.
Snowed In
Waiting and praying were a daily routine for Barbara Schmitt, but today the prayers were more intense.
阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

第二节
An hour later; Ian arrived with a loaded truck. Hardly had Ian arrived when we began to unload from the truck, which was filled with plenty of sand, palm trees, beach toys, torches, and other necessities for the party. I was overwhelmed with a mixture of surprise and gratitude. We made an effort to set everything up in the yard, small signs hanging. Small as the beach was, Helen couldn’t contain her joy and excitement. With all the things arranged well, the guests arrived.
Children could not wait to play on the sand. Not only did they build their sand castles, but they also li t torches and enjoyed the company of the campfire. With the dog barking happily, the children heartily laughed and played on the “beach” around the campfire. When the birthday cake was ready, all the friends sang songs together to express their blessings to Helen. The birthday girl was in high spirits. It was the “beach” built with so much love that made her blessed with an unforgettable birthday.

第二节(满分25分)
阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

1.续写词数应为150左右;
2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
And then I became a dad, and I didn't want my two boys to be outsiders like their father.____________________

Not only did we enjoy watching the game, we played it too.___________________________________________
参考范文:
And then I became a dad, and I didn't want my two boys to be outsiders like their father. So. I bought them tickets to watch our local team. We sat close to the action. The friendly atmosphere at the stadium immediately amazed me. We watched the game several times-in sunlight, in rain, under floodlights, in the cold. Every time we went. we felt a stronger connection with the team's supporter community. Almost without noticing, my shouts of support when the team we supported scored a goal were actually real, and my sighs were also so true when they missed a kick.
Not only did we enjoy watching the game, we played it too. I brought a football to the playground and I even got them a mini foosball table so that we could play it at home. Although I knew little about the game, I became the coach. We learned the rules of the game together, played passes and too shots. After a while, we started to get the hang of it. Looking back on my life, I was never a fan of football or any sports, but I was so grateful that I would be so connected to my children by this beautiful game.

【参考范文】
Then, without hesitation, she said, “Of course.” We walked to her car, and she started chatting with me, easing my awkwardness and discomfort. As we got in, she turned on the heat to warm us up. I unwound the scarf and Grandma’s smile suddenly sprang into my mind as if she were praising me for letting another person do something for me. I murmured, “you remind me of my grandmother”, with tears blurring my eyes. With a slight smile touching the corners of her mouth, she said, “Just call me Grandma Alice.” When she dropped me off, I stood there waving her goodbye. My final exam was a breeze compared with the difficulties I’d gone through.
Back home, I happened to know Grandma Alice was Mrs. Green! I froze in surprise, realizing what a big mistake I made. Grandma Alice was the very person who needed to get a ride but I went so far as to ask her to give me a lift to school. At the thought of her kindness, I was weighed down by guilt. I knocked on her door to express my heartfelt gratitude. As I entered her apartment, Mrs. Green embraced me and thanked me for giving her the opportunity to fulfill a “mitzvah”. At that moment, I began to understand that a mitzvah was not just about doing a good deed for someone else, but also about allowing others to do something for you, in which way people can experience the joy and fulfillment that come from both offering and receiving help.

I wondered where I was getting my strength.
And then...we landed safely.
【答案】I wondered where I was getting my strength. Believe it or not, my other hand was being tightly held by a ringed hand! It was the confident-looking young woman across the aisle. She must have noticed how scared I was and reached over. Among the many feelings going through my head during those 20 minutes was pride-pride in how well everybody on board was behaving. No one went wild with fear. As we jolted and screeched our way downward, I could hear small conversations comforting each other everywhere.
And then...we landed safely. “Ladies and gentlemen, we’re now safe!” the captain announced. Cheers of relief filled the cabin. My cross-aisle neighbour, with her hand still holding mine tight, was weeping with excitement! My next-seat neighbor took over my other hand, laughing out loud! I suddenly realized that kindness is every small act of care, especially in times of great, great difficulty, and that the point is not to pay back kindness but to pass it on!

________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】Christine filmed my rescue attempt and posted photos on social media. Angela gave Stucky water. I focused on digging out her back legs. When I tried to wipe the sweat from my eyes, I would get sand in them. An hour later, we still weren’t making much progress—whenever we nearly freed a leg, which took about 20 minutes, she would get sucked back into the sand. And the more she struggled to get free, the more stuck she became. We were worried it would get dark and the tide would come in.
Luckily, at that point, a pickup arrived carrying 7 guys with all sorts of apparatus (装备). Someone saw posted photos of the camel rescue on social media. Word then quickly spread to the small farms a few kilometres away. They joined in and worked super-hard. Everyone was working on all four of the camel’s legs at the same time, using different techniques. When we finally got her out, Stucky’s legs were effectively dead. Then the guys massaged her legs to get the blood flowing. It took about 20 minutes for her to stand. Then she turned, stretched and gave us a wink goodbye.

Hesitatingly, Mike tried to lend her a hand though he was yet uncertain how to comfort someone. Suddenly, an idea struck him when his eyes fell on the hat. “Those coins should be enough for a bouquet of flowers,” Mike murmured. The next minutes found him running towards a flower shop nearby and coming back with a bouquet of red roses. “Hi, Connie! I know you are moody today, but I guess the roses might cheer you up,” Mike said. Roses in hands, Connie smiled sweetly, “Thank you, Mike!” Connie later learned about Mike’s story and was impressed by his dream.
Connie told Mike a violinist happened to be wanted in the cafeteria where she worked. “Really?! I appreciate the chance!” Mike exclaimed excitedly. The next day, Mike passed the job interview successfully. In the later months, Mike continued to learn and performed better and better. He was able to earn tips in the cafe as much as 50 dollars a night. Not only did Mike help support his family but he was better received in the musical world. Though he lacked skills and practice, Mike felt he was moving closer to his dream day by day.

__________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】Whenever someone walked up to me, I would immediately be seized by embarrassment. Self-conscious about the ugly thing covering my eyes, I constantly removed the glasses from my face. My self-image for a girl at that age was too important. I hated the way my glasses fogged up in the cold, or how they were pushed crooked whenever someone gave me a hug. I felt worthless in them. So, I began to wear my glasses as little as possible. I accepted missing shots in basketball practices and failing in the games, coupled with the consequential headaches and worsening sight. Myself-confidence hit a new low.
However, a kind girl named Anne also with glasses in the basketball team made me feel better. “You are beautiful, girl, with or without the glasses,” Anne approached me one day after practice. As a girl carrying the same burden, Anne didn’t let wearing glasses get in the way of her beauty from inside and out. She always took me to practices, games and even school dances, glowing with confidence. It hit me then that it wasn’t my schoolmates who were ridiculing me. I was the one passing judgement on myself. I learned to be comfortable in my glasses on and off the court, and I can see myself clearly now.

That’s when I knew that I needed an adjustment. I didn’t want my boy to grow into a bitter kid. Over the next few weeks, I worked very hard to fit in. I greeted everyone with a friendly nod, arms uncrossed with a genuine smile. I struck up conversations with acquaintances at the park. I even baked chocolate brownies and offered them as a nice gesture to our neighbors. Most importantly, I stopped talking about moving back home and drew my son’s attention to the upsides of our new community. To my delight, Samuel also started to feel a bit more at home and included.
One afternoon, Samuel and I ran into the lady with her boy again at the library. I gathered my courage and walked closer. “Hi, I’m Amy. This is Samuel. Can we join you guys?” I made sure that I looked approachable. The woman readily pulled up two chairs for us. It turned out we had a whole lot in common. Following that encounter, we visited each other’s home a million times. Before long, my family gradually found our way to be part of this river town. One day Lonny and I were sitting in our yard again, preparing for a barbecue party. “Darling, you still wanna go back home?” Before I uttered a single word, Samuel cut in, “No, Dad. This is our home now.”
