The Guide to Film Festivals
Cannes Film Festival
Cannes, France in May
Top prize: Palme d’Or
History: The first Cannes Film Festival took place in September 1939, but it didn’t happen again until after World War II. The Palme d’Or prize was introduced in 1955. The festival became established during the 1960s and is now known as the world’s most important and influential film festival.
Did you know? About 20 feature films compete each year for the Palme d’Or. Previous winners include Michael Moore and Quentin Tarantino. Unlike the Oscars, the top prize is frequently shared between two films. Famous films that have won the Palme d’Or include Apocalypse Now, Taxi Driver, La Dolce Vita and The Third Man. The festival attracts more than 40,000 people every year.
Venice Film Festival
Venice, Italy in August/ September
Top prize: Golden Lion
History: The Venice Film Festival is the oldest film festival still in existence. The film festival was in 1932 and it attracted over 25, 000 people. Top prize: Non-competitive
History: The London Film Festival started in 1956 when a group of film critics led by the famous Dilys Powell, the film critic for The Sunday Times, got together over dinner. They discussed the festivals at Cannes and Venice, and they agreed that London needed one, too. They wanted to give people the opportunity to see films from around the world that were not being shown in the cinemas. The first festival showed 20 films at the National Film Theatre on the South Bank.
Did you know? The festival is one of Europe’s largest public film events, screening about 280 films from 60 countries. Although it is non-competitive, the British Film Institute awards the Sutherland Trophy to the most original and imaginative first feature film screened at the festival.

Mr. White is quite different to me. I had a lot of anger inside of me, when I first met him. I’ ve lived my whole life in Spanish Harlem, but in my neighborhood, there are shoot-ups all the time, which is terrible. I know kids who have been shot or beaten up. I have some friends who ended up in prison. I could have ended up that way, too, but Mr. White wouldn’t let that happen.
Mr. White worked long time, making sure I did my work. With him company my grades rose. In fact, the scores of our whole class rose. One day, he took our class to see The Phantom of the Opera, and it was the first time some kids had ever been out of Harlem. Before the show, he treated us to dinner at a restaurant and taught us not to talk with our mouths full. We did not want to let him down.
Mr. White was selected as Disney’s 2000 Teacher of the Year. He said he would draw three names out of a hat; those students would go with him to Los Angles to get the award. But when the time came to draw names, Mr. White said, “You’re all going.”
On graduation day, there were a lot of tears. We didn’t want his class to end. In 2001, he moved to Atlanta, but he always kept in contact. He started giving lectures about education, and wrote a bestselling book based on his classroom rules, The Essential 55. In 2003, Mr. White took some of us on a trip to South Africa to deliver school supplies and visit orphanages. It was the most amazing experience of my life. It’s now my dream to one day start a group of women’s clubs, helping people from all backgrounds.
24. Without Mr. White, the writer _________.
A. might have joined a women’s club B. might not have won the prize
C. might have put into prison D. might not have moved to Atlanta
25. How many students’ names were finally drawn out of a hat by Mr. White?
A. None B. Three C. Fifty-five D. All
26. In the passage, the writer intends to tell us that ___________.
A. Mr. White went to South Africa because he liked traveling
B. Mr. White helped to set up a group of women’s clubs
C. a good teacher can raise his or her students’ score
D. a good teacher has a good influence on his or her students
27. What is the writer’s attitude towards Mr. White?
A. He speaks highly of Mr. White.
B. He looks down upon Mr. White.
C. He doesn’t show his attitude towards Mr. White.
D. He takes a neutral attitude towards Mr. White.

Interspecies(种间关系) was once a technical term used in science to describe how one species got along with another. Now it is a word of more consequence: it arouses the new connections that are being made possible by technology between humans and non-humans. In Ways of Being, James Bridle, a British artist and technology writer, explores what this means for understanding the many non-human intelligences on Earth.
Mr Bridle makes clear that three kinds of minds are now interacting: human, non-human and machine. Using artificial intelligence (AI), machines will in future have the capability to interpose (使介入) themselves as translators between humans and other biological life forms.
It is true that profit is the main motive for advances in AI; as yet nature does not get much of a look in, and non-human intelligences go unexplored outside zoology departments. Computing is as focused on humans as ever, even as climate change and biodiversity-loss suggest it should devote much greater attention to other species.
The first step towards an interspecies future, Mr Bridle argues, is showing more appreciation for other forms of intelligence. To some extent, this is already happening. For example, through films and other initiatives many people now know that octopuses (章鱼) have an advanced and strange intelligence. The next step, Mr Bridle declares, is recognizing that people live in a “more than human” world. Other intelligences have developed from a common evolutionary base, and they overlap (重叠) in ways that science is just beginning to discover.
Ways of Being would have benefited from sharper editing. Yet, in making clear the patience, imagination and humility required to better know and protect other forms of intelligence on Earth, he has made an admirable contribution to the dawning interspecies age.
28.Which of the following best illustrates the term “interspecies”?
A.A wolf hunts a rabbit. B.A robot does housework.
C.A lady walks her dog. D.A boy records a video for squirrels.
29.What does AI lay emphasis on nowadays?
A.Biodiversity. B.Other species. C.Humans. D.Climate change.
30.What is paragraph 4 mainly about?
A.The characteristics of species evolution.
B.Expectations for the future development of AI.
C.Suggestions on exploring intelligence of various life forms.
D.The role of technology in understanding different species.
31.Which word best describes the author’s attitude to Ways of Being?
A.Skeptical. B.Favorable. C.Tolerant. D.Conservative.
D
Modern museums are trying everything they can to shore up declining attendance. Somehow, there always seems to be some crisis that they are struggling against — a severe funding cut, for example. What’s worse, the unappreciative public is going farther and farther away. So museums do what they can to attract people, and the results are occasionally wonderful and occasionally laughable.
The worst of such results occurs when some curator, someone who is in charge of a museum, decides that the reason the audience isn’t pouring through the doors is that the content is over their heads — the history presented is too complex and political, the art too abstract, or the scientific explanations too in-depth. What occurs then is a uniform simplifying of the exhibits. Text is minimized, and historically significant pieces are passed over in favor of those more pretty and pleasing. The museum becomes a place where people go to look at pretty things instead of a place for learning, understanding and appreciating different cultures, art, and science.
All these efforts have given rise to the concept of “edutainment”— a mixture in which learning is supposed to be accomplished without any effort at all on the part of the visitor. Displays are constructed with an eye toward their entertainment value, with relevant facts slipped secretly in, as though learning were a bitter pill that must be sugarcoated before the average museum visitors can be induced (劝诱) to swallow it. But true education is an active pursuit, not something one receives like a piece of candy. The museum’s job should be to inspire visitors to look deeper, not to force-feed them predigested facts.
If a museum becomes indistinguishable from a theme park, it has failed. Nonprofit institutions exist because, if they did not, no for-profit institutions would serve their function. If active scholarship is missing, then by all means, supply it, instead of shaping the museum to resemble successful entertainment enterprises.
32.What can we learn from paragraph 1?
A.Modern museums succeed in raising funds.
B.Modern museums have been quite appreciated.
C.Modern museums are facing many challenges.
D.Modern museums are often far away from city centers.
33.Which of the following best explains “over their heads” underlined in paragraph 2?
A.simple and pleasing B.badly expressed
C.educational and important D.too difficult to understand
34.Which of the following would the author most probably agree with?
A.Learning is supposed to be interesting.
B.Entertainment shouldn’t be practiced in museums.
C.Museums should help visitors enjoy learning.
D.Museums shouldn’t provide complex content.
35.What is the main purpose of the text?
A.To point out a problem of modern museums.
B.To encourage readers to visit museums.
C.To advise readers to acquire knowledge actively.
D.To show some good changes in modern museums.

Advice for Cooking on a Tight Schedule
From my experience, there are three main reasons why people don’t cook more often: ability, money, and time.
36 Money is a topic that I’ll talk about another day. So today I want to give you some advice about how to make the most of the time in the kitchen. Here are three tips for great cooking on a tight schedule:
Think ahead. I usually think cooking is a pain when I’m already hungry and there is nothing ready to eat. So think ahead of the coming week. When will you have time to cook? Do you have the right materials already? 37
Make your time worth it. When you do find time to cook a meal, make the most of it and save yourself time later on. Are you making one loaf of bread? 38 It takes around the same amount of time to make more of something. So save yourself the effort for a future meal.
39 This may surprise you, but one of the best ways to make cooking worth your time is experimentation. It gives you the chance to hit upon new ideas and recipes that can work well. The more you learn and the more you try, the more ability you have to take control of your food and your schedule.
Hopefully that gives you a good start. 40 And don’t let a busy schedule disappoint you and stop you from making some great changes in your life!
A.Try new things.
B.Ability is easily improved.
C.Make three or four instead.
D.Understand your food better.
E.Cooking is a burden for many people.
F.Let cooking and living simply be a joy rather than a burden.
G.A little time planning ahead can save a lot of work later on.

Microplastic Pollution
In the past few years, scientists have found microplastics in our soil, tap water, bottled water, beer and even in the air we breathe. And there’s growing concern about the 76 health risks they pose to humans.
The new analysis in the UK have discovered microplastics widely 77 across all 10 lakes and rivers sampled. More than 1,000 small pieces of plastic per litre were found in the River Tame, which was 78 last year as the most polluted place tested worldwide. Even in relatively remote places such as the Falls of Dochart and Loch Lomond in Scotland, two or three pieces per litre were found.
Microplastics are not a 79 kind of plastic, but rather any type of small pieces of plastic that is less than 5 mm in length according to the U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. They may 80 from a variety of sources, including cosmetics, clothing, and industrial processes.
Humans are known to 81 the tiny plastic particles through food and water, but the possible health effects on people and ecosystems have yet to be determined. One study, in Singapore, has found that microplastics can 82 harmful microbes (微生物).
Research by the National University of Singapore found more than 400 types of bacteria on 275 pieces of microplastic collected from local beaches. They included insects that cause gastroenteritis (肠胃炎) and wound 83 in humans.
“Microplastics are being found 84 everywhere but we do not know the harm they could be doing,” said Christian Dunn at Bangor University, Wales, who led the work. “It’s no use looking back in 20 years’ time and saying: ‘If only we’d realized just how bad it was.’ We need to be monitoring our waters now and we need to think, as a country and a world, how we can be reducing our 85 on plastic.”
I had watched performance of Les Miserables (《悲惨世界》)40 times. I fell in love with the songs back in 1985 when they were first released — Bring Him Home, I Dreamed A Dream and On My Own. Even as a head teacher, I hadn’t read the Victor Hugo novel and knew very little about the musical (音乐剧), but the songs caught my attention instantly and I happily sang along whenever I heard them on the radio.
Five years later I set out on a trip around the world with my wife and daughter. On one of our stops in Vancouver, Canada, I saw a large advertising banner (横幅) promoting Les Miserables and immediately suggested booking tickets. On the drive to the theatre, we discussed what we knew of the storyline — nothing but the French Revolution. But we did love the rollercoaster (过山车) ride of emotions and the tragic story of Jean Valjean when enjoying it.
On the late-night drive home, on a high after this amazing performance, I announced that I wanted to perform in the musical when we returned to Australia. This was an incredible statement, because we lived 50 kilometers from the nearest large town, Toowoomba. There was little possibility of ever having a chance to perform. But the Toowoomba Choral Society bought the performance rights in 1992 with the view to perform it in 1994. I had seen a few of their performances but was not a member of the choir (合唱团). They called for auditions (试镜) and, attracted by the chance to be part of the “Les Mis” experience, I went along. I had had no experience singing and had never performed in any musicals but I believed in miracles and hoped for a place for me somewhere in the chorus(合唱团).
I auditioned (试镜) for the role of Javert with some other people and students from the University of Southern Queensland. Rehearsals (排练) started immediately and I quickly learned about singing, acting, and dancing. There was a lot to learn, and when I drove to practice three times a week, I sometimes thought to myself, "This is too hard, maybe I should quit."

Para1: The rehearsal process was tough.
Each rehearsal day, I had no alternative but to hurry over to the theater after my school work and return home at midnight, totally worn-out. Besides, my lack of experience in singing, dancing and playing and other actors’ excellence often made me overwhelmed with a mixture of frustration and anxiety. However, every time when I was on the verge of giving up, the scene where I picture myself performing on stage would always inspire me to hold on to my dream. Months later, with my efforts paying off, I passed the audition and continue rehearsing for the final performance.
Para2: Opening night was amazing.
With the spotlight shining on me, dressed up as Javert, I heard myself singing my favorite song. Never did I think the moment when the dream came true could be so wonderful. No sooner had the musical ended than thunderous cheers and applause broke out from the audience. When we bowed to express our gratitude on stage, I caught sight of my beloved wife and daughter, who waved their arms excitedly. I felt an unprecedented sense of fulfillment and accomplishment, with my face expanding with a big smile.

根据第一段“Interspecies was once a technical term used in science to describe how one species got along with another. Now it is a word of more consequence: it arouses the new connections between humans and non-humans that are being made possible by technology. (种间关系曾经是一个科学术语,用来描述一个物种如何与另一个物种相处。现在,它是一个更重要的词:它唤起了人类和非人类之间的新联系,而这种联系正因技术而成为可能)”可知,“种间关系”这个术语是指人类和非人类之间的新联系。由此推断,“一个男孩给松鼠录了一段视频”最能说明这个术语所表述的含义。故选D。
29.细节理解题。根据第三段“Computing is as focused on humans as ever, even as climate change and biodiversity-loss suggest it should devote much greater attention to other species. (尽管气候变化和生物多样性丧失表明计算机应该更多地关注其他物种,但它仍然一如既往地关注人类)”可知,现在人工智能的重点是人类。故选C。
30.主旨大意题。根据第四段“The first step towards an interspecies future, Mr Bridle argues, is showing more appreciation for other forms of intelligence. (布瑞德先生认为,迈向跨物种未来的第一步是对其他形式的智力表现出更多的欣赏)”可知,本段主要介绍对未来物种间探索的建议。故选C。
31.推理判断题。根据最后一段“Ways of Being would have benefited from sharper editing. Yet, in making clear the patience, imagination and humility required to better know and protect other forms of intelligence on Earth, he has made an admirable contribution to the dawning interspecies age. (《存在之道》本可以从更尖锐的剪辑中获益。然而,在阐明更好地了解和保护地球上其他形式的智能所需的耐心、想象力和谦逊方面,他为跨物种时代的到来做出了令人钦佩的贡献)”可推断,作者对《存在之道》的态度是赞同的。故选B。
32.C 33.D 34.B 35.A
根据第一段“Modern museums are trying everything they can to shore up declining attendance. Somehow, there always seems to be some crisis that they are struggling against — a severe funding cut, for example. What’s worse, the unappreciative public is going farther and farther away. (现代博物馆正在尽一切努力来提振不断下降的参观人数。不知怎么,他们似乎总是在与一些危机作斗争——例如,严重的资金削减。更糟糕的是,不领情的公众离我们越来越远。)”可知,现代博物馆面临很多挑战,比如:持续下降的参观人数和严重削减的资金。故选C。
33.词义猜测题。破折号的作用是进一步解释前文内容。根据第二段破折号后内容“—the history presented is too complex and political, the art too abstract, or the scientific explanations too in-depth. (——呈现的历史太复杂和政治,艺术太抽象,或者科学解释太深入)”可知,一些博物馆馆长认为观众不蜂拥入场的原因是内容“太难了”,所以划线词“over their heads”和“too difficult to understand”同义,故选D。
34.推理判断题。根据第三段“But true education is an active pursuit, not something one receives like a piece of candy. The museum’s job should be to inspire visitors to look deeper, not to force-feed them predigested facts. (真正的教育是一种积极的追求,而不是像一块糖果一样接受。博物馆的工作应该是激励参观者看得更深入,而不是向他们强行灌输简单的事实)”和最后一段“If active scholarship is missing, then by all means, supply it, instead of shaping the museum to resemble successful entertainment enterprises.(如果缺少活跃的学术研究,那就尽一切办法提供它,而不是把博物馆塑造成成功的娱乐企业。)”
故选A。

39.根据下文“This may surprise you, but one of the best tools for making cooking worth your time is experimentation.(这可能会让你吃惊,但让烹饪值得你花费时间的最好工具之一就是实验)”可知,本段主要就是要讲尝试新的菜谱,新的做法,所以A选项“尝试新事物”符合本段主题,适合做主旨句,故选A。
40.根据下文“And don’t let a busy schedule discourage you from making some great changes in the way you eat and live!(不要让繁忙的日程阻碍你在饮食和生活方式上做出一些伟大的改变!)”
