For the first 18 years of my life,my mom cooked Chinese food every day,all served family-style
But when it came time for me to teach myself how to cook,I didn't ask my mom for help.Instead,I turned
to the online recipes().By the time I got married,I could cook many dishes. What I didn't really know
how to cook at all, however, was Chinese food.
Part of the problem was that I only knew how to cook by following recipes. And up until maybe 5 or
10 years ago,the number of English-language recipes for Chinese dishes you could find in a cookbook or
on the Internet still felt extremely limited-at least when it came to homey, everyday recipes written with
a younger Chinese American audience in mind.
That was the experience, too, for sisters Sarah and Kaitlin Leung.Like so many other ABCs
(American-born Chinese)and younger first-and second-generation Chinese immigrants(),the Leung
sisters reached a point in their adult lives when they started to love to eat the food they'd grown up on,but
found it really difficult to learn how to prepare it.
As it turns out, though, the Leung sisters were uniqucly positioned to do something about it:Their
father had spent years cooking at his family's Chinese American takeout restaurant.Their mom had deep
knowledge about traditional Shanghainese cooking.Meanwhile, the two sisters had grown up in New York,
eating their parents'food, but also immersed()in Anerica's own food culture.
So,in 2013,the Leungs started a food blog()"The Woks of Life".What made their blog different
from other blogs was that the intergenerational transfer of knowledge that the Leungs were so eager for
was baked right into the concept:The four family members took turns posting recipes, each sharing their
own favorites. In that way,Sarah says, the blog reflected-and continues to reflect-the diversity of the
overseas(海外的)Chinese.
24.What partly stopped the author leaming to cook Chinese dishes?
A.She was too busy to cook at home.
B.She had no access to such recipes.
C.It was hard to learn to cook online.
D.Her mother didn't teach her how.
25.Who might be the targcted readers of the Leungs'blog?
A.Young American housewives.
B.American students studying overseas.
C.The Chinese immigrant's family.
D.Chefs working in Chinese restaurants.
26.What sets the Leungs'blog apart from others'?
A.Being written by four different people.B.Reflecting the diversity of American life.

Last night,I found my mother sit with her legs crossed on the sofa, looking through her iPhone with
her glasses. This is not the first time I have caught her like this.My father once tapped()away on his
phone with a serious look on his face, saying the "I'll be with you shortly"line.I have leamned by now that
this is to tell me to leave him alone for the next 10 minutes.Although they don't like admitting it,both of
my parents couldn't go without their phones as I do.
Growing up,we are repeatedly reminded that we are those who prefer to text our friends in the same
room rather than make eye contact with them.We are ruining the English language because we like using
heart-eyes emojis(instead of spelling it out.And even though I can recognize myself as a social
media()addict.I think parents should at least consider that not only the young generation, but also
they like phones.
I get upset when I receive the "I'll be with you shortly"line from a parent. But at the same time,
leaving the room to wait until my father is finished with his"serious business"has now become the norm.
Whether you want to escape your noisy children for a while,or want to stay up late tapping through
Twitter, all of these are common. But you should fully understand it.We--your children--know how
addictive it can be and how difficult it is to turn it off.So before calling us out and telling us to "put our
phones away at the table"or even worse, saying how damaging social media can be to us,maybe you
should lead by example and consider how much time you spend on the phone as well as how this is
influencing your children and your relationship with them.Maybe in this way we can work on our
addiction together.
28.What can we learn about the author's parents?
A.They become addicted to phones like him.B.They've been forced to use phones by him.
C.They like buying their phones online at home.D.They often communicate with him by phone.
29.What is the young generation's weakness according to Paragraph 2?
A.Having fewer chances to learn social skills.B.Failing to express themselves in a right way,
C.Getting angry easily when facing their parents.D.Giving up ways of communicating directly.
30.What does the underlined word"norm"in Paragraph 3 mean?
A.Formal tradition.
B.Accepted behavior.
C.Unexpected decision.
D.Unforgettable experience.
31.What advice is given to parents in the last parugraph?
A.Setting a good example in front of children.B.Putting the phones away at the table.
C.Taking more time to stay with children.D.Having good communication with children.

If you've ever emerged from the shower or returned from your walk with a clever idea or a solution
to a problem you had been struggling with,it may not be a surprise.Rather than constantly concentrating

on a problem, research from the last 15 years suggests that people may be more likely to have creative
breakthroughs when they're doing a habitual task that doesn't require much thought.
"People always get surprised when they realize they get interesting, novel ideas at unexpected
times,"says Kalina Christoff,a scientist at the University of British Columbia in Vancouver,"because
our culture tells us that we should do it through hard work."
Now researchers begin to understand why these clever thoughts occur during more passive activities
and what's happening in the brain. They have found that the key is a series of brain activitieswithin
what's called the default mode (DM)network-that occur while an individual is resting or performing
habitual tasks that don't require much attention.
"Simply put,it is a state that your brain returns to when you're relaxed,"explains Christoff."By
coutrast,when you're working on a demanding task,the brain's executive control (EC)systems keep your
thinking focused,analytical,and logical."
Researchers find that the DM network is also involved in the carly stages of idea generation, drawing
from past experiences and knowledge about the world. When your mind wanders, you're allowing
thoughts to playfully cross your mind, which helps you combine information and ideas in new ways and
something clicks.
"A cautionary note:While the DM net, work plays a key role in the creative process,it is the EC
systems that help you to evaluate and apply the creative ideas effectively to your problems in the real
world,"Christoff says."So it's unwise to place blind faith in the discovery that creative ideas can be
generated in the shower or during any other kinds of mind wandering.Instead, you bave to do the work to
set the groundwork for creative ideas to emerge in the first place."
32.What is the most unlikely function of the EC systems?
A.To let you evaluate problems.
B.To help you analyze.
C.To lct you get creative ideas.
D.To keep you focused.
33.What does the underlined part"something clicks"in Paragraph 5 probably mean?
A.A clever idea comes up.
B.Something drops down.
C.A memory disappears.
D.A funny thought happens.
34.What is Kalina Christoff's attitude to the culture of hard work?
A.Negative.
B.Unconcerned.C.Doubtful.D.Positive.
35.Which statement might the author agree with?
A.Practice makes perfect.
B.All work and no break makes Jack a dull boy.
C.Where there is a will, there is a way D.Everything comes to him who waits.

share Ali's running shoes.Zahra's school hours were in the morning,so she would wear them first. After
school, she would rush back and give them to Ali.He could then run to his school, which began in the
