Akira Toriyama, one of Japan’s leading comics authors, whose manga (漫画) “Dragon Ball”
achieved worldwide success with its mix of comedic characters and electrifying martial arts battles,
died on March 1. Mr. Toriyama’s body of work, which also includes “Dr. Slump” and “Sand Land,”
has influenced generations of manga artists and cartoonists.
His best-known work, “Dragon Ball,” follows a young boy named Son Goku who embarks on
a journey to collect the seven magical balls that summon a wish-granting dragon. Since its creation
in the 1980s, it has sold millions of copies worldwide and become one of the most famous manga.
第5页,共 12 页
Throughout his career, Mr. Toriyama said in a 2013 interview with the Japanese newspaper The
Asahi Shimbun, he did not care if his work did anything besides entertaining its readers. He was, he
suggested, unlike “other manga artists concerned about conveying educational messages.” “The
role of my manga,” he said, “is to be a work of entertainment through and through.”
When “Dragon Ball” was first published in 1984, it was an immediate hit. “Dragon Ball” was
serialized in the Japanese magazine Weekly Shonen Jump until 1995. In the year after the series
ended, the magazine lost about one million of its six million readers.
As a productive manga artist, Mr. Toriyama did not necessarily have an appetite for the genre
as a reader. “I have always had a hard time reading manga, including my own work,” he said in a
2018 interview. He led a private life and gave few interviews. In a 2013 interview with the Japanese
singer and actress Shoko Nakagawa, he said that he did not even share all his work with his family.
“To tell you the truth, no one in my family has ever seen ‘Dragon Ball,’” he said, laughing. “I
am also a hikikomori,” he added, using the Japanese word for a loner.
24. According to Akira Toriyama, what role does his manga primarily serve?
A. A tool for education. B. A window to culture.
C. A form of entertainment. D. An insight into tradition.
25. What can you infer from the underlined sentence?
A. Manga was not popular among readers any more.
B. The magazine faced the crisis of ceasing publication.
C. Readers preferred other manga series to “Dragon Ball”.
D. “Dragon Ball” had a great impact on the magazine’s popularity.
26. According to the passage, Akira Toriyama is a person with ________.
A. outgoing personality B. a strong sense of privacy
C. passion for reading manga D. deep interest in entertainment
27. Which can be the best title for the text?
A. “Dragon Ball”: Manga’s Future Model
B. The Art of Manga: Techniques and Tips
C. Akira Toriyama: A Manga Legend’s Journey
D. The Legacy of “Dragon Ball”: Beyond the Manga

Have you ever noticed how the email icon (图标) on many computers and smartphones is
of an envelope? Or how camera phones make the sound of a real camera clicking when you take a
photo, even though there's no shutter to open or close? These are examples of skeuomorphs, which
take on the appearance or sound of the object they've replaced.
Why would new things want to look like something old? It's all to do with human
psychology. Psychologist James Gibson says one of the ways people understand the world is
through affordance — objects whose shape tells you how to use them. When creating new digital
technologies, inventors like Steve Jobs of Apple used skeuomorphs so people would know how to
use their products. By showing people an image of something they already knew how to use, it
made using a computer or smartphone easier.
However, as people became more familiar with modern technology, some designers argued
that skeuomorphs were no longer necessary. Indeed, the younger generation don't need visual
references to older items they've never used. This led to something called flat design, where
computer desktops and smartphone home screens started to do away with skeuomorphism.
Skeuomorphs made a comeback, though, with smart watches. Many smart watches took on
the appearance of an old-fashioned watch, with a clock face. This was to encourage people who
didn't like digital watches to consider buying a smart watch.
While these are the ways skeuomorphs are used today, that doesn't mean it's only a modern
phenomenon. In fact, the word was first used in 1899 by the archaeologist Henry Colley March,
who realized that some ancient artefacts(人工制品) kept the appearance of older objects, even
though there was no practical reason for them to do so. When ancient Greek builders moved from
using wood to stone, they recreated some of the characteristics of wooden buildings. From ancient
Greek architecture to 21st century technology, skeuomorphs have been a key feature of scientific
progress. So, when you wonder about the objects of the future, take a look around. Chances are
that they will look a lot like the objects of the past.
28. Which of the following is an example of skeuomorphs?
A.
Facebook
B.
Starbucks
C.
Flashlight
D.
Booking

29. How would people feel about skeuomorphs?
A. User-friendly B. Safety-centered C. Energy-saving D. Cost-effective
30. Why did some designers think skeuomorphs unnecessary?
A. Users became used to technology. B. These products were expensive to design.
C. Young people rejected traditional designs. D. The existing standards had been updated.
31. What is the last paragraph mainly about?
A. The prediction about future objects. B. The key feature of scientific progress.
C. The design philosophies of skeuomorphism. D. The ever-lasting presence of skeuomorphs.

You’ve most likely heard the news by now: A car-commuting, desk-bound, TV-watching
lifestyle can be harmful to our health. All the time that we spend rooted in the chair is linked to
increased risks of so many deadly diseases that experts have named this modern-day health
epidemic the “sitting disease”.
Sitting for too long slows down the body’s metabolism(新陈代谢)and the way enzymes
break down our fat reserves, raising both blood sugar levels and blood pressure. Small amounts of
regular activity, even just standing and moving around, throughout the day is enough to bring the
increased levels back down. And those small amounts of activity add up — 30 minutes of light
activity in two or three-minute bursts can be just as effective as a half-hour block of exercise. But
without that activity, blood sugar levels and blood pressure keep creeping up, steadily damaging
the inside of the arteries (动脉) and increasing the risk of diabetes, heart disease, stroke, and other
serious diseases. In essence, fundamental changes in biology occur if you sit for too long.
But wait, you’re a runner. You needn’t worry about the harm of a sedentary lifestyle
because you exercise regularly, right? Well, not so fast. Recent studies show that people spend an
average of 64 hours a week sitting, whether or not they exercise 150 minutes a week as
recommended by World Health Organization(WHO). Regular exercisers, furthermore, are found
to be about 30 percent less active on days when they exercise. Overall, most people simply aren’t
exercising or moving around enough to balance out all the harm that can result from sitting nine
hours or more a day.
Scared straight out of your chair? Good. The remedy is as simple as standing up and taking
activity breaks.
第8页,共 12 页
32.Which is the best way to bring down high blood sugar level and blood pressure?
A.Doing exercise for 150 minutes or more every week.
B.Getting rid of the habit of car commuting and TV watching.
C.Standing or moving around for at least two minutes every day.
D.Interrupting sitting time with light activity.
33.What does the word “sedentary” in the third paragraph most likely mean?
A.Inactive. B.Risky. C.Overloaded. D.Unbalanced.
34.Which of the following may be inferred about those who do serious exercise?
A.They always meet the exercise standard recommended by WHO.
B.They tend to stand or move less on the days when they work out.
C.They usually remove all the harmful effects of sitting for too long.
D.They generally spend less time sitting than those who do not exercise.
35.What is the passage mainly about?
A.The challenges of the modern lifestyle.
B.The effect of regular activity on our body.
C.The reasons for the spread of a modern epidemic.
D.The threat to our health from long hours of sitting.

How to Stop Being a People Pleaser
As a recovering people pleaser, I spent much of my life keeping others happy. Breaking this
habit meant stepping on a few toes. However, I’ve become a happier person as a result. Here are
some tips I used to stop being a people pleaser.
Identify your priorities. Take a moment to think about why you are trying to learn how to
stop being a people pleaser. Who are the people that you feel the need to please? 36
Answering these questions will help you set a goal that you can hold yourself accountable to.
Just say “no”. One reason why people pleasers say “yes” to everything is that they fear
disappointing others. 37 If you are a people pleaser, you are likely to spend lots of energy
第9页,共 12 页
trying to control how people feel about you. The best thing you can do is let them feel their
feelings. It will feel liberating to free yourself from being responsible for someone else's reaction.
38 Saying “no” is a good way to set better boundaries in your important
relationships. All healthy relationships have their own boundaries. If you haven’t set boundaries in
your relationships, the odds are that at some point you will end up feeling pressured to do
something you don’t want to do.
Accept yourself. Many people pleasers are insecure about who they are. 39 Check
out our summary of Brené Brown’s the Gifts of Imperfection to learn how to accept your
imperfections and love yourself.
Remember that you cannot please everyone. No matter what you do there will always be
someone who is unhappy with your choices. 40
A.Set healthy boundaries.
B.Keep healthy relationships.
C.Why do you feel the need to keep them happy?
D.Spend some time learning to love yourself for who you are.
E.And why bother trying to please everyone if it isn’t possible?
F.But saying “no” is the best way to take care of your own needs.
G.That is why the more you seek security, the less of it you have.

第二节(满分 25 分)
阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
One day, while at work in a coal-mine in Malden, I happened to overhear two miners
talking about a great school for poor people in Virginia. It was Hampton Institute. The school was
established to provide opportunities for poor but worthy students who could work out all or a part
of the cost of board, and at the same time be taught some trade or industry.
I was on fire constantly with one ambition, and that was to go to school. I decided at once
to go to that school. Finally, the great day came and I started for Hampton. I had only a small,
cheap bag that contained what few articles of clothing I could get. The distance from Malden to
Hampton is about five hundred miles. I had not been away from home many hours before it began
to grow painfully evident that I did not have enough money to pay my fare (路费) to Hampton.
By walking and begging rides in some way, I finally reached the grounds of the Hampton
Institute after a number of days, tired and dirty. As soon as possible after reaching, I presented
myself before the head teacher for assignment to a class. Having been so long without proper food,
a bath, and change of clothing, I was like a worthless loafer (游荡者).
I did not, of course, make a very favourable impression upon her, and I could see at once
that there were doubts in her mind about the wisdom of admitting me as a student. I tried to
impress her in all the ways I could with my worthiness. How I wished that I could get a chance to
show what was in me.
After some time, the head teacher said to me, “The adjoining (隔壁的)classroom needs
sweeping. Take the broom and sweep it."

It occurred to me at once that here was my chance. _________________________________
