On August 20th, 2024, the Chinese gaming industry reached a milestone with the global release of Black Myth: Wukong, a new AAA action role-playing game — a label that refers to big budgets and high production values. Within hours of launch, it topped Steam’s most-played single-player list, gaining significant attention on social media.
Black Myth: Wukong draws on Chinese mythologies and the classic novel Journey to the West. It allows players to assume the role of Sun Wukong and start grand adventures. Inspired by Stephen Chow’s A Chinese Odyssey, the game creates a vivid dreamland with Chinese scenery, like remote mountains, wild roads and ancient temples. The various evils, gods, and other figures with Chinese-style designs in the game are based on The Classic of Mountains and Seas, breathing new life into the ancient tales of Chinese mythology.
Feng Ji, Game Science founder and CEO, emphasized that the game was created entirely by a Chinese team to bring Chinese stories to the global gaming stage. He said, “The script and artistic concepts always take the lead, harmoniously integrating Chinese stories and classical cultural elements into the game.” He believed that a game’s true value is not determined by its budget or visuals, but by the genuine enjoyment it offers players.
According to the Xinhua News Agency, to create a truly immersive, world-class game, the game’s production team spent years traveling across China, scanning historical and cultural sites, and integrating them into every game scenes. The game features 36 locations thoroughly modeled after real world sites, with 27 of them located in Shanxi Province, China, offering players a unique and immersive visual experience. The game has already been promoted as a source of nationalist pride.
The game has boosted interest in Shanxi’s cultural heritage. On its launch day, the search volume for Shanxi tourism increased by over 10%. Bookings for trips to Shanxi have doubled since July and the number of tourists to Shanxi has grown by 50%. Most of us are familiar with Groundhog Day, during which a large groundhog checks to see its shadow on February 2 and helps to predict when winter will end. But have you ever heard about how a mountain town in North Carolina uses a caterpillar known as the Woolly Worm to make similar predictions?
According to the folk tale, the amount of black on the woolly worm in autumn predicts the severity of the upcoming winter. The longer the woolly worm’s black bands are, the longer, colder, snowier, and more severe the winter will be. Similarly, a wider middle brown band is associated with a milder upcoming winter. The position of the longest dark bands indicates which part of winter will be coldest or hardest. In addition, the woolly worm caterpillar has 13sections to its body, which traditional forecasters say correspond to the 13 weeks of winter.
Scientific studies on worm forecasting are few and far between. Having heard about the caterpillar tale, the entomologist Howard Curran traveled to Bear Mountain State Park to collect woolly worms each fall for eight years. He found that if the worms had brown markings on more than a third of their body, winters tended to be milder.
However, some of the scientists think of the tale of caterpillar predictions as just that. “It’s a wonderful story, but I do think it was playful,” says Joe Boggs, an entomologist at Ohio State University Extension who has studied woolly worms. “Curran was a real scientist. He had a bunch of papers published, but he never published this one-probably because he knew it wouldn’t stand up to peer review.”
Mike Peters, an entomologist at the University of Massachusetts, doesn’t disagree, but he says there could be a link between the band of a woolly worm and the severity of winter. Peters suggests that the timing of their growth and environmental conditions, such as temperature, moisture levels, and food sources, can impact the appearance of woolly worms. By analyzing these characteristics, researchers can potentially infer information about the weather conditions. “The band does say something about a heavy winter,” he says.“ The only thing is that it’s telling you about the previous year.”
32. How do people predict the weather through woolly worms?
A. By studying color bands on their bodies. B. By analyzing their living habits.
C By measuring the change of their size. D. By calculating the number of their segments.
33. What is Howard Curran’s finding based on?
A. A survey on the locals. B. His personal study.
C. Studies by previous scientists. D. Statistics collected by the museum.
34. What is Joe Boggs’s attitude towards the caterpillar tale?
A. Positive. B. Dismissive. C. Unclear. D. Skeptical.
35. Which statement might Mike Peters agree with?
A. The caterpillar forecasting needs long-term data to support it.
B. The cold environment has a great impact on caterpillars’ growth.
C. The color band of caterpillars can be a mirror of past weather.
D. Woolly worms can help predict the severity of winter accurately.

I applied for a job with a Chinese-Canadian company in Vancouver. As you know, the Chinese are famous for their food. They cook delicious food and obtain a simple pleasure from eating.
So, I was not surprised when my new boss invited me out to lunch to celebrate my new job. He said we were going to eat in a Chinese restaurant in Chinatown. I was nervous. I knew we would be using chopsticks, and while I had tried many times to master the technique, I had completely failed in every attempt. How would I be able to make a good impression? Would I make a complete fool of myself?
That evening, I called a friend and asked her to explain exactly how to use chopsticks. She patiently explained the proper way of holding them between the thumb, first and middle fingers.“ It is not that hard,” she said. “That is easy for you to say,” I replied. “You’ve been eating with chopsticks all your life. It is natural for you!” I didn’t get much sleep that evening. I kept turning around in bed all night, worrying about lunch the next day.
The next day, I could hardly contain my anxiety. It was difficult to get any work done in the morning. At noon, I left with my boss and two co-workers and headed to the restaurant. We were seated at an excellent table. My boss wrote out the food order, speaking to the server in Chinese. My heart was pounding, but then I noticed a strange thing. Instead of the customary chopsticks, each of us had knives, forks, and spoons.
I was confused at first, but then, it hit me. My boss knew that I would have trouble with the chopsticks. He wanted to save me from embarrassment, so he had called ahead and arranged for us to be served with knives and forks. I couldn’t believe how kind and helpful he was.

W: I agree, and I’m so glad you invited us here. We’ve received money for environmental projects but haven’t learned the best ways to defend our land from rising sea levels.
M: The most urgent step is creating a policy to build natural barriers to prevent damage to houses. I have researched plans for how to protect our coastline. Through this process, we’ll defend many families in our community.
W: Sounds perfect.

Thanks, everyone. I feel so inspired to donate to educational projects. For my speech, I’d like to introduce my work in historical discoveries. This topic is different from other speeches tonight. But it fits the theme of tonight’s charity event for children. We’ll provide a special history course for all students in the new school we’re building using donations.
My team focuses on historical digging. We have helped experts in history worldwide make incredible discoveries. I do most of my work outside the United States. In fact, I spent most of my time in Italy. But my most exciting project was researching Terracotta Army in Xi’an, China. Although these ancient statues were first found by farmers decades ago, they quickly became one of the world’s most unique historical sites. There, over 8000 well-preserved warriors (武士) offer a clear view of what soldiers looked like over 2000 years ago!
The most important part of my team’s strategy is learning about the land we’re investigating (研究). Indeed, researching culture and history was the biggest change to my team’s digging strategy.
Well, thank you for listening. And let’s hear it for our next speaker, a science expert, who’ll present her impressive work!

Zhang Weili Defends Her Title in ALL-Chinese Final
ZHANG WEILI’S UFC (终极格斗冠军赛) TITLE REIGN continues. The UFC women’s strawweight (草量级) champion defended her belt at UFC 300 on April 13.She defeated Yan Xiaonan in the first ever title fight between two Chinese fighters. It was a fairly dominant performance from Zhang.
In the first round, Yan got her back taken by Zhang, who locked her in the neck and appeared to be choking her out seconds before the bell rang. Yan went limp for a few seconds but then struggled to her feet. Looking confused, she walked over to her corner, and the fight continued.
The second round was a dominant one for Zhang, and she came close to forcing a defeat from Yan. However, things changed dramatically in the third. Yan picked up plenty of momentum (势头) by, taking down Zhang and landing several shots on the feet that seemed to surprise the defending champion.

It made me think, ‘Wow, women can be so powerful,’ and I wanted to show that power just like her.”

C. By measuring the change of their size.
A 33. B 34. D 35. C
根据文章第二段中“According to the folk tale, the amount of black on the woolly worm in autumn predicts the severity of the upcoming winter. The longer the woolly worm’s black bands are, the longer, colder, snowier, and more severe the winter will be. Similarly, a wider middle brown band is associated with a milder upcoming winter. The position of the longest dark bands indicates which part of winter will be coldest or hardest. 故选A。
根据文章第三段中“Having heard about the caterpillar tale, the entomologist Howard Curran traveled to Bear Mountain State Park to collect woolly worms each fall for eight years. He found that if the worms had brown markings on more than a third of their body, winters tended to be milder.( 听说了毛毛虫的故事后,昆虫学家Howard Curran每年秋天都前往熊山州立公园收集毛茸茸的蠕虫,持续了八年。他发现,如果这些蠕虫身上有超过三分之一的褐色斑纹,冬天就会比较温和。)”可知,Howard Curran是一位昆虫学家,他听说毛毛虫预测天气的故事后,连续八年前往熊山州立公园收集毛毛虫进行研究。他发现如果毛毛虫身体上有超过三分之一的棕色标记,那么冬天往往会更温和。因此,Howard Curran的发现是基于他个人的研究。故选B。
【34题详解】
推理判断题。根据文章第四段中““It’s a wonderful story, but I do think it was playful,” says Joe Boggs, an entomologist at Ohio State University Extension who has studied woolly worms.(“这是一个精彩的故事,但我确实认为它很有趣,”俄亥俄州立大学推广部的昆虫学家Joe Bogg说,他研究了长毛虫。)”
根据文章最后一段中“Mike Peters, an entomologist at the University of Massachusetts, doesn’t disagree, but he says there could be a link between the band of a woolly worm and the severity of winter.( 马萨诸塞州大学的昆虫学家Mike Peters并不反对这种说法,但他表示,毛茸茸的蠕虫和严冬之间可能存在联系。)”以及“By analyzing these characteristics, researchers can potentially infer information about the weather conditions. “The band does say something about a heavy winter,” he says.“ The only thing is that it’s telling you about the previous year.”(通过分析这些特征,研究人员可以潜在地推断出有关天气状况的信息。他说:“条纹确实表达了一些关于严冬的东西。”“唯一的问题是,它会告诉你前一年的情况。”)”可知,Mike Peters认为毛毛虫身上的颜色带可以反映过去的天气情况,而不是准确地预测未来的冬季严重程度。C选项“The color band of caterpillars can be a mirror of past weather.(毛毛虫的颜色带可以成为过去天气的反映)”符合题意。故选C。

Dear Jerry,
I’m writing to share with you an online cross-cultural exhibition exchange activity held last weekend.
In this activity I chose to showcase Chinese calligraphy as it is an integral part of our culture that dates back thousands of years. Featuring diverse and distinctive styles, Chinese calligraphy, whose tools and materials are well-known “the Four Treasures of the Study”, conveys the writer’s unique characters, rich thoughts and emotions. Not only does it reflect the beauty and elegance of the Chinese language but also embodies the spirit and philosophy of our people.
Participating in this event has broadened my horizons and deepened my understanding of cultural diversity. It has also reminded me of the power of art in bridging gaps between different cultures and fostering mutual understanding and respect.
Looking forward to hearing from you soon.
Yours,
Li Hua

Instantly, I made up my mind and asked the server to bring me a pair of chopsticks.

In the end, I wasn’t embarrassed at all.
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
One possible version:
Paragraph 1:
Instantly, I made up my mind and asked the server to bring me a pair of chopsticks. As soon as they were brought in front me, I took them carefully in my hand. I looked over at my boss and we exchanged a smile. With determination, I grasped the chopsticks and attempted to pick up some rice and a piece of meat. However, my fingers slipped and the food fell back onto the plate. I was swamped with a sense of embarrassment due to my failed attempts. At that moment, I saw my boss giving me a reassuring nod, which motivated me to keep trying. I plucked up the courage and tried again, determined to master this skill. Through trial and error, I gradually got the hang of using chopsticks.
Paragraph 2:
In the end, I wasn’t embarrassed at all. I was glad that my new boss was so thoughtful that he could take everything into consideration. And I was really happy that I had decided to ask for chopsticks. After that, we often went out for lunch in that restaurant. Despite facing a number of challenges, I persevered in my attempts to use chopsticks. With the help of my friend and the patience of my boss, I was able to overcome my fear of using chopsticks and practice until I became proficient. It struck me that diversity is not about how we differ, but about embracing one another’s uniqueness.
