I arrived home from work, my mind racing. I was scheduled to perform an experiment using a pricey piece of equipment, but I had spent the whole day worrying about the experiment which was on the top of my agenda, and I amazingly longed to shut off my anxious thoughts. So after dinner, I made a cup of hot chocolate, stretched myself on my sofa, and opened a page. Almost instantly, my mind left behind the details of experimental design and stepped into a land of monsters, magic dust, and man-like bears comprising a wonderful world distinct from my daily life. It was exactly what I needed.
Growing up, I was virtually never a big fan of novels. My classmates would be crazy about the latest Harry Potter book, while my copy sat collecting dust on a shelf. Instead, I would choose to read through the reference books related to my disciplines for better grades. After I started graduate school, extracurricular reading didn’t appeal to me at all but I spent most of my time on campus digesting research papers and textbooks and my mind couldn’t handle processing fact-filled nonfiction books at home, too. So I knew that I needed to find a way to enjoy reading again.
To help me stick with it, I made a New Year’s resolution: I would read two fiction books per month for the entire year. The result was an almost instant appreciation of fiction, along with many unexpected results including ones that have benefited my schoolwork.
What surprised me the most was how much I learned. Some of the best books I read were historical fictional stories happening in a realistic historical setting. I learned about life in different countries as well as struggles people there faced during difficult periods in their histories. The books have helped me build sympathy and understanding, with an unexpected benefit: I’ve started to think more deeply about the diversity of issues in the scientific community and could serve it, heart and soul.
4. What did the author do to wipe out the anxiety?
A. He drowned it in chocolate. B. He escaped into a fantasy world.
C. He slept on the sofa leisurely. D. He conducted an experiment.
5. What does the author mean by the underlined part in Paragraph 2?
A. Reading novels was a waste of time.
B. He never read science fiction.
C. He was too busy to take good care of his books.
D. The Harry Potter book wasn’t as good as expected.
6. How did the New Year’s resolution benefit the author?
A. More sympathy went out to him.
B. His moral values were enhanced.
C. He learned much about religious diversity.
D. He accquired a deeper understanding of academic issues.
7. What does the author think of the impact reading fiction books has on himself?
A. Overestimated. B. Underestimated. C. Favourable. D. Temporary.

Lord Norman Foster, renowned as one of the world’s foremost architects, has devoted decades to redefining the concept of tall buildings. “What we’ve done is create a sense of identify drawn from real needs,” Foster said. “It’s not a fashionable idea, but generated from the realities we were in.” His masterpiece includes iconic structures such as the HSBC building in Hong Kong. Now, he’s set his sights on Qatar.
Currently nearing completion and set to reach a height of 301 meters, Foster’s Lusail Towers are ready to claim the title of Qatar’s tallest buildings. Lusail Towers are intended to serve as a center for Qatar’s financial institutions, with four distinctive blocks, two standing at 70 stories and two at 50 stories.
But the construction itself wasn’t all plain sailing. To address the unique challenges presented by Qatar’s hot climate, Foster’s team had to depart from the materials commonly used in skyscrapers in cooler countries — part of what Foster called a decades-long quest to “reinvent the tall building.” The design combines advanced shading with ventilation (通风), while the towers’ surfaces are coated with “marine-grade”aluminum (铝) that wraps around the buildings, protecting the glass from strong sunlight while maintaining the views and still letting in natural light. Central to the project are special shading fins (鳍), which not only optimize views and natural lighting for occupants but reduce solar radiation by 70% compared to traditional all-glass towers.
While the towers are ready to become a recognizable landmark for Lusail, Foster believes that a city’s skyline reflects what lies beneath the surface. It was crucial to integrate the towers into a “low-scale master plan.” They are strategically positioned on top of a subway line and at the end of a commercial avenue linking the waterfront (滨水区) to the nearby football stadium. According to Foster, the ground features of the plaza will play a significant role in the objective of transforming the area into a lively public space for the future.
8. According to Foster’s concept, what should tall buildings be like?
A. Renowned. B. Identical.
C. Fashionable D. Practical.
9. What can we learn about the Lusail Towers?
A. They will function as a global financial center. B. They are expected to be Qartar’s tallest building.
C. They are Foster’s most renowned iconic masterpiece. D. They have four blocks with the same style and height.
10. What was the solution to the challenges caused by Qatar’s hot climate?
A. Coating the tower with an unconventional material.
B. Reducing the views and natural lighting with shading fins.
C. Replacing the glass with “marine-grade” aluminum.
D. Protecting the glass from natural light and solar radiation.
11. What’s the goal of “low-scale master plan”?
A. To link the waterfront to the football stadium. B. To create a remarkable plaza for the citizens.
C. To offer a dynamic public space for the future. D. To connect a subway and a commercial avenue.

A new study shows that female academics are significantly underrepresented in winning academic prizes and having awards named after them. Analysis of nearly 9,000 awardees and 346 scientific prizes and medals published in Nature Human Behaviour has found that men win eight prizes for every one won by a woman if the award is named after a man. These awards represent almost two-thirds of all scientific prizes. Female academics are, however, more likely to win awards that have been named after other notable female scientists, with 47% of those awards going to women and 53% to men.
Dr Katja Gehmlich, Associate Professor in the Institute of Cardiovascular Science at the University of Birmingham and joint lead author of the study, said, “The gender gap between awardees in scientific prizes is sadly a product of a long, systematic issue of poor representation of women in sciences. Despite decades of efforts to rebalance this issue, our study shows that women are still poorly recognized for their scientific contributions, and men are far more likely to win prizes and awards, in particular, if those awards are named after other men.
“It seems particularly shocking to me that awards named after women still see more than half of prizes going to men. We further propose a list of actions to address and overcome these issues but are aware this will be a long process. The Nominate Her movement is one way that the scientific community can begin to address this,” said Dr Gehmlich.
Prof Stefan Krause from the School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences at the University of Birmingham and joint lead author of the study said, “Our data is indicative of much wider issues of gender inequality within sciences. Our current publication is an initial attempt to understand the causes of such striking gender inequality and to promote discussion on the subject within our scientific communities.”
“Research culture has a lot to do to improve the gender prize gap, as well as efforts to address the inequality that sees almost two-thirds of prizes currently named after men. More pathways may also be needed, such as renaming or getting rid of gender names associated with some awards,” added Prof Krause.
12. How are awards named after female scientists distributed between genders?
A. Males are in the majority.
B. Females take up a bit more than half.
C. They are almost entirely awarded to females.
D. They are evenly distributed between males and females.
13. What’s Dr Gehmlich’s attitude toward gender inequality in scientific prizes?
A. Doubtful. B. Tolerant.
C. Uncaring. D. Disappointed.
14. What suggestion does Prof Krause offer to narrow the gender gap?
A. Establishing gender rates for awards.
B. Increasing the number of female judges.
C. Encouraging more women to enter scientific fields.
D. Renaming or removing gender names from awards.
15. What is the best title for the text?
A. Achievements of women in science
B. The role of men in the scientific world
C. Gender inequality in scientific awards
D. Future of gender equality in academia

Professor Zhu Yunxia, an award-winning researcher and educator at the University of Queensland and has an international reputation in cross-cultural management and strategy, believes that anyone can learn to overcome cultural barriers with the right approach. She offers the following suggestions.
Be prepared for surprises.
One country might contain different cultures—China, for example, is composed of 56 ethnic groups—and within these, people may act in different ways in different contexts and with different groups of people. _____16_____
_____17_____
While speaking the language is not necessary to understand the culture, it is important to know basic greetings and courtesies (客气话) for social interaction such as “hello” and “thank you”. These everyday phrases and rituals (礼节) are entry points which allow you to access the culture. People will also appreciate that you have made the effort.
Learn to “make strange”
In day-to-day life, we tend to take many of our own customs and behaviors for granted without recognizing that these might appear odd from others’ point of view. _____18_____
Use a “cultural bridge”.
The customs of another culture can be too strange or too foreign to understand. _____19_____ “Cultural bridges” are people whose knowledge enriches our own and who can help us understand what’s going on. Having arrived as a Chinese student, Dr. Zhu has spent over 20 years in Australia but still sometimes seeks a second opinion from her daughter who was brought up here and occasionally calls up old friends for advice in China.
Don’t focus on yourself.
_____20_____ Instead of giving in to thoughts such as “I’m a stranger in a foreign land” or “Nobody talks to me”, try to forget yourself and focus on others. By taking a more positive approach, you can even find ways to use cultural differences to your advantage.
A. Learn the“cultural grammar”.
B. Consequently, wait for the unexpected.
C. Develop and expand cooperative awareness.
D. Sometimes an “insider” can help us to bridge the gap.

In my childhood, under the influence of my el der brother and my peers in the neighborhood, I tried a number of outdoor activities. Of course, I was not so taken by all of them. whether I was doing them for the first time or continuously. However, fate had its own plans in store. You never know when an outdoor activity will change my life.
The name of this activity is “fishing”. About ten years ago, I didn't really like the idea of sitting on the bank of a lake or river, spending long hours under the sun's ultraviolet rays, which can cause sunburns and skin damage, and anxiously anticipating some fish to be kind to take my bait(诱饵). In fact, I used to think of this outdoor activity as some kind of “hide-and-seek-game” that is popular with most young kids, except that it was much harder because I could see my “prey (猎物)” only after catching it.
However, all that changed when I paid a visit to my aunt in the countryside during a summer holiday. I was finally convinced by one of my cousins to accompany him to a nearby lake in order to do some fishing practice with him. In fact, he even assured me that fish would eat my baits. So I agreed and went to the lake expecting to catch some fish. Before throwing my fishing line into the water, my cousin did some tricks attaching some sort of food to my fishing pole.
Learning to fish in a river or lake can be challenging for the beginners like me. The act of dropping a line is easy, but being a successful fisher is hard. That's why they call it fishing but not catching But with practice and patience, it can become easier over time. Patience is essential in lake fishing. It may take some time to find the right spot or lure (鱼饵) that will attract fish.
注意:1.续写词数应为150左右;
2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
My cousin had to repeatedly remind me to keep patient.

C. Favourable. D. Temporary.
【答案】4. B 5. A 6. D 7. C

A They will function as a global financial center.
【答案】8. D 9. B 10. A 11. C

阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
Learn to “make strange”.
E. Be open-minded and always try to aim for a win-win situation.
F. Being too self-conscious can harm your ability to interact and learn.
G. Learn to look at situations with fresh eyes, starting with our own culture.
【答案】16. B 17. A 18. G 19. D 20. F

【导语】本文是说明文。文章阐述了朱云霞教授提出克服文化障碍的正确方式。
【16题详解】
根据标题Be prepared for surprises.可知,本段讲述文化障碍中的惊奇,上文“One country might contain different cultures—China, for example, is composed of 56 ethnic groups—and within these, people may act in different ways in different contexts and with different groups of people.( 一个国家可能包含不同的文化——例如,中国是由56个民族组成的——在这些民族中,人们在不同的背景下和不同的人群中可能会有不同的行为方式。)”说明不同的文化背景下人们的行为方式会不同,因此会产生很多意料之外的事情,因此推断B项“因此,等待意想不到的事情。”符合语境,呼应主题,与前文是因果关系,故选B。
【17题详解】
空处是段落小标题,根据下文“While speaking the language is not necessary to understand the culture, it is important to know basic greetings and courtesies (客气话) for social interaction such as “hello” and “thank you”. These everyday phrases and rituals (礼节) are entry points which allow you to access the culture. People will also appreciate that you have made the effort.( 虽然说语言不是了解文化的必要条件,但重要的是要知道基本的问候和礼仪,如“你好”和“谢谢”的社会交往。这些日常用语和礼节是让你进入文化的切入点。人们也会感激你所做的努力。)”可知,本段建议了解基本的日常用语和礼节,作为你了解这个文化的切入点,因此推断A项“学习“文化语法”。”为段落标题,“cultural grammar”指代上文提到的“basic greetings and courtesies”,故选A。
【18题详解】
上文“In day-to-day life, we tend to take many of our own customs and behaviors for granted without recognizing that these might appear odd from others’ point of view.(在日常生活中,我们倾向于把自己的许多习俗和行为视为理所当然,而没有意识到这些习俗和行为在别人看来可能会很奇怪。)”
可知,本段建议使用“文化桥梁”和上文“The customs of another culture can be too strange or too foreign to understand.(另一种文化的习俗可能太奇怪或太陌生而难以理解。)”说明其它文化习俗或许难以理解,下文““Cultural bridges” are people whose knowledge enriches our own and who can help us understand what’s going on.(“文化桥梁”是指那些他们的知识丰富我们的知识,可以帮助我们理解正在发生的事情的人们。)”
可知,本段建议不要只关注自己,下文“Instead of giving in to thoughts such as “I’m a stranger in a foreign land” or “Nobody talks to me”, try to forget yourself and focus on others. By taking a more positive approach, you can even find ways to use cultural differences to your advantage.(不要屈服于这样的想法:“我是一个在异国他乡的陌生人”或“没有人和我说话”,试着忘记自己,关注他人。通过采取更积极的方法,你甚至可以找到利用文化差异的方法。)”阐述了不要关注自己,要关注他人的办法,E项“过于自我意识会损害你的互动和学习能力。”符合段落主题,不要过多关注自己,故选F。

In my childhood under the influence of my el der brother and my peers in the neighborhood, I tried a number of outdoor activities.

【答案】One possible version:
My cousin had to repeatedly remind me to keep patient. He taught me how to adjust my pole based on the movements of the fish and how to determine the best time to lift the pole when a fish was on the hook. Under his guidance, I calmed down gradually, staying focused to wait patiently. Then suddenly, I felt a jerk of my pole. A surge of thrill sweeping over me, I pulled the fishing pole out of water and I caught my first fish! So excited was I that I even gave a jump in the air. It was a small one, but it was a milestone for me!
When we finally left the lake, I had caught three fish! Thrilled and fulfilled, I skipped all the way home with my cousin, telling him it was a pity that I had been missing out on so much by avoiding this simple outdoor activity before. Since then, I have become a passionate fisherman and love spending time outdoors, appreciating the simple pleasure of life. Fishing has taught me to be patient and persistent and most importantly, it has also taught me a lesson that we should not miss out on these opportunities just because they are simple or just we do not know how to do them well.
