Evidence shows that teaching existed in Oxford as early as 1096, and it has been ranked as the top university in the UK by The Times for many times. The Tutorial (导师的) System In the University of Oxford, teaching is conducted primarily through the tutorial system. Tutorials are beneficial to students’ skills of critical analysis, but the greatest advantage of the tutorial system is the individual guidance that students receive. The contrast between tutorials and large lectures common in the American universities is obvious. In the typical American university, students are taught by the same specialists, in the same manner, and held to the same standards. Societies and Clubs There are rich after-school activities at Oxford. Students may join a variety of clubs and societies according to their own interests. The Oxford University Scientific Society aims to bring together undergraduates to discuss scientific matters. The Oxford Union Society has gained a worldwide reputation for its debate. The Newman Society has served as a model for religious society throughout the English-speaking world. It first came into being in 1970, followed in 1972 by World Environment Day. It has been celebrated ever since, slowly but surely picking up steam. Interestingly, it remained a grassroots affair for 20 years before spreading out to 140 countries in 1990. Now, it is celebrated around the world. Humans still face many challenges, such as climate change and plastic pollution. But we can all make a difference. When Claire was in the seventh grade, she learned about plans to expand and modernize her middle school. As a follower of Earth Day, she wanted to help. Claire asked the school board to add solar panels to the project because, she explained, clean energy would contribute to a truly modern school, and help her school pursue sustainable development. The board liked the idea but said it could contribute just $25,000, one-fifth of the cost. So Clarie turned to the community, looking for a solution. Her friends and neighbors shared her enthusiasm. Soon Claire organized a group of kids and adults, who set to work raising the rest. They wrote grant (拨款) requests, put on a talent show and asked for donations, even going door-to-door for them at Halloween. And they appealed to charitable foundations too. One donated more than half the cost! After two years of hard work, the group paid for the solar panels, which now supply one-fourth of the school’s electricity needs, saving the district thousands of dollars. “My favorite part about this project was that one person could start something small and then the project could grow and have a big impact on the community,” Claire said “There are always going to be barriers and hard parts. When there’s a challenge presented to you, use it as a learning moment and an opportunity to overcome it.” You can be a hero for the environment, so find out what can be recycled where you live. 8. What can we learn about Earth Day from the first paragraph? A. It was first celebrated on April 22, 1972. B. It gained instant popularity worldwide. C. It aims to raise environmental awareness. D. It promotes solutions to human challenges. 9. Why did Claire give advice to her school? A. To sell the solar panels. B. To make her school greener. C. To improve academic grades. D. To beautify the school campus. 10. What is paragraph 3 of the text mainly about? A. The vital role of charities. B. Difficulties in raising money. C. Constant efforts on the project. D. Financial support from the public. 11. Which of the following can best describe Claire? A. Responsible and determined. B. Generous and creative. C. Energetic and reliable. D. Curious and adventurous. 8. C 9. B 10. C 11. In our constant focus on trees, we’ve developed a fixed understanding: Trees absorb carbon dioxide, end of story. The reality is that trees don’t grow well alone. They exist within complex communities, helped along by each other as well as the animals they coexist with. The woodland isn’t nature’s only carbon sink: grasslands and oceans also help reduce the carbon level and rely on a healthy amount of biodiversity. That’s what the paper, published in Nature, wants to get across. Co-author Oswald J. Schmitz, a professor of ecology at Yale University, said trees might not be able to do their carbon-uptake job efficiently without the right animals in their ecosystem. That’s because animals animate the carbon cycle through their behavior and roles in the ecosystem. He added that the very presence of wild animals could cause feedback effects that change the ecosystem’s capacity to absorb, release, or transport carbon. In Serengeti, for instance, the sharp decline in wildebeest (角马) populations during the mid-20th century allowed grass to grow wildly, eventually promoting wildfires that consumed 80 percent of the ecosystem annually and led to a net release of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere. When disease management and bans on illegal hunting helped animal populations recover, a greater share of the carbon stored in plants was consumed by wildebeest and released as waste, keeping it in the system and restoring the grassland as a carbon sink. Researchers rarely consider wildlife conservation as a strategy to increase an ecosystem’s carbon storage capacity, said Schmitz. “They think that animals either aren’t important enough or that you can’t take up carbon and conserve animals at the same time,” he said. “Our message is that you can and should. It can be a win-win for both biodiversity conservation and carbon uptake.” We need a full picture — with both trees and animals — to explore nature’s full potential. 12. What does the first paragraph tell us? A. Actions are needed to reduce carbon dioxide. B. Trees are a quick solution to the climate crisis. C. Grasslands help maintain biodiversity. D. People are not thinking through trees properly. 13. What does the underlined word “animate” in paragraph 2 mean? A. Disturb. B. Restart. C. Activate. D. Break. 14. What does the author want to say by mentioning wildebeest? A. The conservation of animals is still a serious issue. B. Animals can swing the ecosystem’s capacity to store carbon. C. Human impacts bring about the reduction in wildlife populations. D. The increase in animal species causes a decrease in carbon uptake. 15. Which of the following is the best title for the text? A. Animals Adjust Themselves to Climate Change B. Trees May Fail to Fulfil Their Duties without Animals C. Woodland Isn’t the Only Carbon Sink on the Earth D. The Serengeti Ecosystem Needs Urgent Improvement 【答案】12. D 13. C 14. B 15. 根据第一段中“In our constant focus on trees, we’ve developed a fixed understanding: Trees absorb carbon dioxide, end of story. The reality is that trees don’t grow well alone.(在我们对树木的持续关注中,我们已经形成了一种固定的理解:树木吸收二氧化碳,仅此而已。事实是,树木单独生长不好)”可推知,人们没有正确地考虑树木。故选D项。 【13题详解】 词句猜测题。根据划线词前文“Co-author Oswald J. Schmitz, a professor of ecology at Yale University, said trees might not be able to do their carbon-uptake job efficiently without the right animals in their ecosystem.(合著者Oswald J. Schmitz是耶鲁大学的生态学教授,他说,如果没有合适的动物在它们的生态系统中,树木可能无法有效地完成它们的碳吸收工作)”可知,生态系统中有合适的动物,树木才能有效地完成它们的碳吸收工作。 根据第二段中“He added that the very presence of wild animals could cause feedback effects that change the ecosystem’s capacity to absorb, release, or transport carbon.(他补充说,野生动物的存在可能会引起反馈效应,改变生态系统吸收、释放或运输碳的能力)”和第三段“In Serengeti, for instance, the sharp decline in wildebeest (角马) populations during the mid-20th century allowed grass to grow wildly, eventually promoting wildfires that consumed 80 percent of the ecosystem annually and led to a net release of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere. When disease management and bans on illegal hunting helped animal populations recover, a greater share of the carbon stored in plants was consumed by wildebeest and released as waste, keeping it in the system and restoring the grassland as a carbon sink.(例如,在Serengeti,角马的数量在20世纪中期急剧下降,使得草疯狂生长,最终引发了野火,每年消耗80%的生态系统,并导致二氧化碳净释放到大气中。当疾病管理和禁止非法狩猎帮助动物种群恢复时,储存在植物中的大部分碳被角马消耗并作为废物释放出来,使其留在系统中,并恢复草原作为碳汇的作用)”可推知,角马数量下降最终导致二氧化碳净释放到大气中,动物数量恢复时碳被留在生态系统中,故作者提到角马是举例说明第二段的观点,动物可以改变生态系统储存碳的能力。故选B项。 【15题详解】 主旨大意题。阅读全文,根据第二段中“Co-author Oswald J. Schmitz, a professor of ecology at Yale University, said trees might not be able to do their carbon-uptake job efficiently without the right animals in their ecosystem.(合著者Oswald J. Schmitz是耶鲁大学的生态学教授,他说,如果没有合适的动物在它们的生态系统中,树木可能无法有效地完成它们的碳吸收工作)”可知,这篇文章主要讲述树木在生态系统中与动物的相互作用,没有动物,树木可能无法履行它们的职责。 How to deal with silent treatment? Is someone you know giving you the silent treatment? Maybe you did something wrong: you embarrassed or humiliated the other person; You let them down or failed to give them your support when they needed it. ___16___. Be clear about what happened You probably already know what it was that you said or did. ___17___. You could say, “I feel like there’s a problem between us and that you might be upset with me.” If you do know what happened between you to cause this gap, ask if you can talk. ___18___ Explain that you know what happened between you wasn’t good and that you’d like to be friends again. Ask them what their thoughts and feelings are now about what happened. Acknowledge what they say about how they feel and then say how you feel. For example, “I understand why you are upset and that you are angry. I feel sad/ upset/ bad about what happened, and I’d like to put things right.” Take responsibility and apologize ___19___. It simply means admitting your part in any wrongdoing and expressing that you’re sorry. For example, “I know you wanted our situation to be kept private and I’ve really upset you by telling other people about it. I’m sorry I did that. I thought that talking about it to others would help me make sense of what was going on.” Try only once If the other person refuses to restart talking to you, there’s nothing else you can do. ___20___ They may need more time to process what happened between you, so give them some space. A. You’ve done your best. Now, it is up to them. B. Share your past experiences. C. This doesn’t mean taking all the blame D. No matter what it is, here’s a handful of ways that will set you in the right direction. E. It means that we should keep it to ourselves. F. But if not, ask. G. Ask about thoughts and feelings. D 17. F 18. G 19. C 20. 【16题详解】 上文“Maybe you did something wrong: you embarrassed or humiliated the other person; You let them down or failed to give them your support when they needed it.(也许你做错了什么:你让别人感到尴尬或羞辱;你让他们失望了,或者在他们需要的时候没有给予他们支持。)” No matter what it is承接上文内容,ways与下文呼应,所以D选项“不管是什么,这里有一些方法可以让你走上正确的方向。” 【17题详解】 上文“You probably already know what it was that you said or did.(你可能已经知道你说了什么或做了什么。)”提到了你可能知道的情况;下文“You could say, “I feel like there’s a problem between us and that you might be upset with me.”(你可以说:“我觉得我们之间有问题,你可能会生我的气。”)” 【18题详解】 空格处是小标题的位置,下文“Explain that you know what happened between you wasn’t good and that you’d like to be friends again. Ask them what their thoughts and feelings are now about what happened. Acknowledge what they say about how they feel, and then say how you feel.(解释一下,你知道你们之间发生的事情并不好,你想再次成为朋友。问他们现在对所发生的事情有什么想法和感受。承认他们所说的他们的感受,然后说出你的感受。)”提到了询问想法和感受,选项G中thoughts and feelings是关键词,与下文呼应,所以G选项“询问对方的想法和感受。”能概括下文内容,适合用作小标题。故选G项。 19题详解】 本段小标题“Take responsibility and apologize(承担责任并道歉)”提到了责任和道歉;下文“It simply means admitting your part in any wrongdoing and expressing that you’re sorry.(它只是意味着承认你的过错,并表示你很抱歉。)” 【20题详解】 上文“If the other person refuses to restart talking to you, there’s nothing else you can do.(如果对方拒绝重新与你交谈,你就无能为力了。)” 故选A项。 When I was 20, I started my own company. After purchasing all they needed, they called a porter to carry everything and drop it off at their home. The porter whose clothes were torn was of an old age, and looked very unhealthy. They asked the porter about the charges for delivering their goods to their home. The old porter quoted just $20, a price well below the market price. Yet, the couple argued and bargained with the porter and finally settled for $15. The porter was struggling to make money for every single meal so he needed anything he could earn. The couple was very happy thinking about how well they had bargained with the poor porter, paid him $15 in advance and left after giving the porter their address for delivery. They reached their home and one hour passed, and two hours passed, but the porter still didn’t deliver their stuff. The wife started to get angry at her husband, “I always tell you not to trust such person, but you never listen to me. I am sure instead of delivering the goods to our home, he must have disappeared with everything. We must immediately go back to the market to inquire and then to the police station to file the complaint against him.” They both left towards the market. On their way near the market, they saw another porter. They stopped him to inquire about the old porter and noticed that he was carrying their goods in his cart! I was just on the way to completing the old man’s last delivery to your home.” Paragraph 2: Upon hearing this, the husband had tears in his eyes, and the wife felt so ashamed that she had no courage to look her husband in the eyes. In addition, there are a great many clubs, including Oxford University Cricket Club, Oxford University Chess Club, and so on. B Compared with physicists such as Marie Curie or Richard Feynman, Wu Chien-shiung is not a household name in China but she was one of the most influential nuclear physicists of the 20th century, one that “completely” changed human’s view of the universe. Wu’s father, Wu Zhongyi, founded the first school for girls in Taicang, aiming to break the old idea that it was women’s virtue to have no talents, which had the greatest influence on Wu Chien-shiung’s life. Working in the scientific world dominated (支配) by men, she never gave up or lowered her standards even if unequally treated. After graduating from the former National Central University in Nanjing in 1934, Wu registered at the University of California, Berkeley at the age of 24 to continue her study in physics. During her 44-year career as a nuclear physicist, Wu’s pioneering achievements won her nicknames such as “Chinese Madame Curie”, “queen of nuclear research” and “first lady of physics”. She was the first woman to be president of American Physical Society, the first female winner of the Comstock Prize in physics given by the US National Academy of Sciences, the first person to receive the Wolf Prize in physics, the first honorary doctorate awarded by Princeton University to a woman, and the first female professor of physics in the history of Columbia University. To get accurate results from experiments, she worked very hard day and night at a laboratory and gained a reputation (名声) for accuracy. There was a saying among physicists: If the experiment was done by Wu, it must be correct. She was always very careful in experiments, spending a great deal of time calibrating (校准) instruments. She didn’t start collecting data until she fully understood the instruments. Her experiments overturned many previous experimental results and theories, said Samuel Chao Chung Ting, American physicist and Nobel Prize winner. On Feb 16, 1997, Wu died in the US. According to her will, she was buried in her hometown Taicang. She was a distinguished world citizen, and was forever a Chinese. 4. What influenced Wu Chien-shiung when she was young? A. Her life in America. B. Her love for physics. C. Her family background. D. Marie Curie’s achievements. 5. What does the author intend to show in paragraph 3? A. Awards are usually gained through great efforts. B. Wu Chien-shiung was “a pioneer” in many ways. C. No scientists were better than Wu Chien-shiung. D. We cannot stress the importance of physics enough. 6. Which of the following can best describe Wu Chien-shiung? A. Caring and responsible. B. Courageous and creative. C. Stubborn and sensitive. D. Cautious and hardworking. 7. What is the text mainly about? A. An influential woman nuclear physicist. B. An important contribution to physics. C. The influence of modern education. D. 10 What is paragraph 3 of the text mainly about? A. The vital role of charities. B. Difficulties in raising money. C. Constant efforts on the project. D. Financial support from the public. 11. Which of the following can best describe Claire? A. Responsible and determined. B. Generous and creative. C. Energetic and reliable. D. Curious and adventurous. D Intended to help draw down carbon dioxide from the atmosphere, Tree-planting has become a synonym (同义词) for climate action. 12. In order to maintain their high living standards, they went shopping at a market where everything was of high cost and had a fixed price . The angry wife asked him, “Where is that old thief? This is our goods and he was supposed to deliver them. It seems you poor thieves are stealing our goods and going to sell them.” Paragraph 1: When the porter heard the angry wife asking, ______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Paragraph 2: Upon hearing this, the husband had tears in his eyes. ______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 第1页/共1页 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 $
