When people ask me how I started writing, I find myself describing an urgent need that I felt to work with language. Having said that, I did not know for a long time what I was looking for. It was not until I followed this feeling to its source that I discovered I had a passion for writing. With some encouragement from my colleagues, I had one of my poems published. This bit of success, however, was the point where my problem began.
Back in 1978, I had to travel between three different campuses in the morning, teaching freshman composition. Afternoons I spent taking my daughter to her ballet and horse-riding lessons. I composed my lectures on the way, and that was all the thinking time I had. When I returned home, there was not enough of me left for writing after a full working day.
As a way out, I decided to get up two hours before my usual time. My alarm was set for 5:00 A.M. The first day I shut it off because I had placed it within arm's reach. The second day I set two clocks, one on my night table, and one out in the hallway. I had to jump out of bed and run to silence it before my family was awoken. This was when my morning writing began.
Since that first morning in 1978, I have been following the habit to this day, not making or accepting many excuses for not writing. I wrote my poems in this manner for nearly ten years before my first book was published. When I decided to write a novel, I divided my two hours: the first for poetry, the second for fiction. Well or badly, I wrote at least two pages a day. This is how my novel, The Line of the Sun. was finished. If I had waited to have the time, I would still be waiting to write my novel.
What I got out of getting up in the dark to work is the feeling that I am in control. For many people, the initial sense of urgency to create easily dies away because it requires making the tough decision: taking the time to create, stealing it from yourself if ifs the only way.

25 Why did the author place an alarm clock in the hallway?
A. In case the clock in her room broke down. B. In case she failed to hear the ringing.
C. To force herself out of bed. D. To wake up her family.
26. How did the author manage to finish her novel?
A. By sticking to writing every morning. B. By writing when her mind was most active.
C. By drawing inspirations from classic novels. D. By reducing her teaching hours at school.
27. What can we learn from the author's success in her writing career?
A. It is never too late to change your job. B. Imaginative ideas die away if not taken in time.
C. A tight schedule is no excuse for lack of action. D. Daily life provides ideas for creative writing.

What if you could experience music in your body, rather than hear it through your ears? That’s the idea behind Patrick Hanlon’s magic vests (魔术背心), which allow concertgoers (常参加音乐会者) who are deaf or hard of hearing to experience music. A magic vest is a wearable device that allows its user to experience touch through force, vibration and movement.
Hanlon is a co-founder of Music: Not Impossible, an arm of Not Impossible Labs. This group creates and uses tech to try to transcend social barriers, including those around disability. Magic vests will promote inclusivity at live music performances.
Previous methods that deaf and hard-of-hearing individuals would use to enjoy live music included putting their hands on speakers (扬声器). They could also hold a balloon to feel vibrations on their fingertips. The vests aim to allow for a totally new experience. Hanlon says that nobody expects that using the vests will be so engaging, and “when you see it in people’s eyes, it’s magical.”
Jay Zimmerman, a composer whose ability to hear was damaged, says the vests are an example of new technology offering more exciting flexibility than before. He hopes that soon these inventions will allow deaf kids to have experiences with real vibrations.
The vests are not limited to any particular type of music. Hanlon explained the vibration points can even be adjusted to fit a show’s overall atmosphere. The vests have been used at concerts for rock band Greta Van Fleet and pop star Lady Gaga.
28. What is the purpose of Patrick Hanlon’s magic vests?
A. To perfectly fit a concert’s overall atmosphere.
B. To replace traditional speakers at music concerts.
C. To provide better seating options at live music events.
D. To help people with hearing problems feel music better.
29. How do the vests allow users to experience different musical elements?
A. By putting hands on speakers. B. By feeling force, vibration and movement.
C. By engaging in magic. D. By holding a balloon.
30. What does the underlined word “transcend” in paragraph 2 most probably mean?
A. Get over. B. Cure of. C. Tear up. D. Account for.

C. People with hearing problems who enjoy music.

Ever wondered why fresh fruits and vegetables are the first thing you see in stores or why the bread and milk are so far away? Supermarkets spend millions of dollars researching consumer (消费者) behaviour in order to develop ways to make you buy more in their stores.
CHOICE magazine takes a look at some of the more common tricks to help you avoid spending more money next time you go shopping.
Experts say turning to the right when you walk into a shop is connected with most people’s preference (偏好) for using their right hand.
Dr Paul Harrison, expert at Deakin University, says a store’s entry is not the only important point. “Research in the US has shown that shoppers who travel in an anti-clockwise (逆时针方向的) direction will spend about two dollars more per trip than clockwise shoppers.”
Research made on shoppers’ in-store movements suggests people travel to some aisles (过道) only. The most common trip to travel in stores is around the outside circle, walking in and out of the aisles as needed. As a result, the ends of each aisle are where the store makes the most money.
When you enter a big supermarket fresh fruits and vegetables are in the first shopping area. Although it’s not wise to first put fruits and vegetables into your shopping basket, this department is set to make the shoppers feel that it’s fresh and healthy. People who use the fresh food areas are also likely to spend more money in the store.
By setting up different “marketplace” areas, it feels as though we’ve visited several different stores where we can get everything we need rather than a single big shop. Each of these areas has different lighting and floor coverings. “It’s all about creating a market-like feel,” says Harrison. “Areas making and selling bread, apart from smelling good, give the impression that the supermarket can be trusted. It’s like they’re saying, ‘You can trust us because we make food.’”
32. Why do people turn to the right when entering a shop?
A People are mostly right-handed. B. It’s easier for them to walk in a circle.
C. Fresh food is often placed on the right. D. Shopping baskets are usually on the right.
33. What does the research in the US find?
A. Most shoppers walk anti-clockwise.
B. Clockwise walkers are often big shoppers.
C. A store’s entry is the most important point.
D. Walking directions influence consuming behaviour.
34. As for aisles, what do supermarket managers most care about?
A. The ends. B. The middle. C. How long they are. D. How wide they are.
35. What’s the best title of the passage?
A. How to save money?
B. An introduction of supermarket placement strategy.
C. How to to be a smart shopper.
D. How to develop healthy eating habits?
【答案】32. A 33. D 34. A 35. B
【解析】

【34题详解】
细节理解题。根据第五段“Research made on shoppers’ in-store movements suggests people travel to some aisles only. (对购物者在店内移动的研究表明,人们只会前往某些过道。在商店里最常见的行进路线是沿着外圈走,并根据需要进出各个过道。因此,每个过道的尽头是商店赚取最多利润的地方)”可知,超市经理最关心的是过道的末端,因为那里是超市利润最高的地方。故选A。
【35题详解】
主旨大意题。根据第六段“When you enter a big supermarket fresh fruits and vegetables are in the first shopping area. (当你进入大型超市时,首先看到的是新鲜水果和蔬菜区)”以及最后一段“By setting up different “marketplace” areas, it feels as though we’ve visited several different stores where we can get everything we need rather than a single big shop. (通过设置不同的“市场”区域,让人感觉好像逛了好几家不同的店铺,能够买到所需的一切,而不是仅仅在一个大型商店里购物)”可知,文章主要是介绍超市如何利用不同的布局策略来影响消费者的购买行为。故选B。

Several years ago, I traveled by train to Stockholm. I was visiting two friends who were to meet me at the train station. I stood there waiting for my first friend to arrive and in the midst of all the hurrying passengers that Friday afternoon, I heard a weak voice; it sounded like a question. I turned and saw a young man standing with a white cane ( 拐 杖 ) , his suitcase by his feet. I approached and asked,“Do you need help?”“Yes,”he replied, nodding his head, appearing relieved.
He had been trying for some time, unsuccessfully, to get someone’s attention. He had missed his train home. His cell phone battery was dead, and he needed to call his mother to tell her of the circumstances.
This young man named Mustafa, I found out, had just completed his first week at a school for the blind. He went to school on Mondays and returned home on Fridays. Of course I helped him call his mother. I did not understand what he spoke with her on my cell phone, but I could tell the language was Swedish. Of course the next problem was finding the right train home and telling his mother the new arrival time. Yet in this disordered train station, I did not want to miss connecting with my friend Bogdan who was on his way to the spot where we were standing.
Before I could dial the number to call Bogdan, he was suddenly already there. I described the problem and Bogdan took the young man’s arm and we were off on our adventure to help get Mustafa home. While sorting out where his home was, what train, and what time, my second friend Marcello called and wondered where we were. Soon he joined us. It happened that Marcello speaks 12 languages.

【答案】Paragraph 1:
Marcello’s gift in language was a great advantage. Now we could talk with Mustafa more effectively, learning about more information about him. Later, Marcello called Mustafa’s mother in Swedish. We told her not to worry about her son. We also told her that her son had missed his train so we helped him choose another train. In the end, we let Mustafa talk with his mother on the phone. He was grateful for our help and told his mother the time of his arrival.
Paragraph 2:
Now we were leading Mustafa to his train. And we set off to find the train platform. Then it was time to help him get on the train, and it’s best to find a seat with someone who could look after Mustafa and help him get off the train. Unexpectedly, a woman on the train suddenly recognized Mustafa. It turned out that she was a teacher at his school, and Mustafa was just her student. What a coincidence! That was the end of our adventure.

B

A. People are mostly right-handed.
